Sorry, brother! I had no idea that you had previously shared this song in the thread. I haven't looked through the pages of this thread, which is my own fault.
dothedoo

No worries. I just think it’s funny we both chose the same track.

Quoted from AVH7401:

I think Zakk's style, as in the pinch harmonics, are more subjective to taste. However, I personally believe that Zakk should not incorporate this technique in any of the RR or Jake E. Lee tracks. If it were up to me, he would strictly cover the songs note to note to the best of his ability, which is fairly high. (I am not discrediting Zakk Wylde's skills on his instrument in any way!)

He used to - there's video of the No Rest tour from 1989/1990 and he plays everything perfectly.

I would love to see the footage you are mentioning? Is it on Youtube on anywhere else online? If so, would you mind linking it for me, please? Rdoyle1978

Quoted from rotordave:

The guy can certainly play, for sure.
But I couldn’t even make it to the end of Bark at the Moon on that video. Between Ozzys out of tune singing and Zakks whiizzz wherrrrr whizzzz EEEEEEEOOOOOEEEEEE every 10 seconds, I could take no more.
rd

Have you ever listened to the album "Live & Loud"? Zakk even finds a way to fuse his pinch harmonics into the Sabbath classics on that album. rotordave

Oh yeah. I went to see Black Label Society last year, more of the same. But he seems to really overdo it in those old Ozzy songs.

A good friend and I bought tickets to see Deep Purple in Lakeland, Florida (USA) back in the late 80's. Right before the concert happened, ace guitarist Ritchie Blackmore broke his finger so some shows (including the Lakeland one) were canceled! ARGH!!!

PS: Sadly...I never got to see Deep Purple in concert!

#408 5 years ago

I grew up listening to classic metal in the late 70s and 80s, so I can really relate to most of the links on this thread. I was pretty disappointed at a lot of the bands in the 90s, as grunge kinda-sorta had that metal feel to it, but didn’t quite fit the bill. I just didn’t like the sound of a lot of the bands - everything from the bizarre rhythms and hooks to that annoying slurring vocal style.

A little over a decade ago it seemed like there was a revival of the more “classic” metal sound, with kick-ass edgy riffs and powerful talented vocalists. Two of my favorite modern metal bands are Volbeat and 5FDP.

Anyone listening to any of the “newer” stuff?

Sorry to hear about your struggle to see such a great band. Deep Purple will be playing a show with Judas Priest a few hours away from where I live, in September. I may consider going.

The new Amorphis Album "Queen of Time" is now released and for me it's the best album so far in 2018!

I am loving the new tunes, there’s more variety here, they kind of were on autopilot with the last 2 albums. The videos too! Wrong directions is awesome

Anthrax are always a good way to start my day.

I actually prefer the John Bush albums. Such a powerful singer.

If you didn’t know, John Bush is who Metallica originally wanted to sing for them (as James wasn’t comfortable singing). It would have been interesting to see how that would have gone.

John was in Armoured Saint back then. And is again now. The latest album is pretty strong.

PS if you want to see how powerful a singer Bush is, watch Belladonna try to sing this song on a recent tour. They dropped it from the setlist half way through. Just couldn’t pull it off.

Around '83 I was running lights for a local band(35th reunion in the works). That summer one of our buddies, Tim, was maintenance man at Stowe Vt High School, about 40 miles from here. We saw Tim a few times that summer and everytime he'd tell us Deep Purple was getting back together, were rehersing/recording in Stowe and he'd let them in to the HS everyday at 2(?) to play soccer. To top it off he always tried to get us to get a team together to play DP, because they were looking for anyone to play. None of us were soccer players, but he said they didn't care, they just wanted more people. Of course we told Tim he was full of it and laughed anytime he mentioned DP. The liner notes in Perfect Strangers thanks Stowe HS for letting them play soccer everyday, the video was filmed all around Stowe....

Around the same time as the DP thing was going on, one of the bands on the same northern Vermont bar circuit as ours was a band called MegaForce. They used to be known as Bad Habit, but then changed their name when they added a lead singer by the name of Joey Belladonna. He used to lose his voice a couple of times a night singing Journey & Boston songs. We hung with those guys for about a couple of years, often times going to see each others band or playing in adjacent towns. Finally, one night I showed up to a local club, didn't see Joey and asked Tommy the lightman where he was. "He joined Anthrax about 6 months ago". I already had Spreading the Diesase, I just didn't pay attention and no doubt would have thought it was a different Joey Belladonna. Fast forward 20+ years and my son's band is loading in to play the Webster Theather in Hartford, CT for the first time, who's poster is on the wall as the band who played the previous night, Joey Belladonna.

He's doing all sorts of side projects. He has a new band Atilla that tours from time to time. Also runs a couple model websites. I'm helping him with some of the code on his latest site.

Well that’s cool, I’m bummed he split Biohazard but glad he’s still doing music. Uh.. “model” like WWII airplanes, or model like Jenna Jameson model?

You may remember Dee Snider, the singer from Twisted Sister. About 6 months ago, he was on the Jamey Jasta podcast (recommended) and Jamey pitched him to make a real heavy record.

Dee took him up on it, and the first song is coming out today. Album is coming out in July.

Songs were written by Jamey, Howard Jones, Mark Morton and others. Lots of guests on the tracks including Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy.

I’ve heard some snippets of it, sounds pretty impressive.

Here’s the first release from it.

Does anyone like Yngwie Malmsteen?

Quoted from AVH7401:

“I am a Vikkkkkkinnngggggg!”

I was a fan back in the day when I was trying to steal his licks.

I listened to the first 2 albums a few months ago when I was painting a ceiling. I usually have metal playing as I paint. Helps make the job bearable. The albums are still sounding good - and Jeff Scott Soto’s vocals were really strong.

Yep. At least he got two great albums in before hitting the wall.

As a young lad, I wasn't ready for "change" when Boals came around to front the 3rd album -- he may be more talented with his vibrato (more like Dio), but I liked how raw the first singer felt -- Soto sounded more like a Viking to me... 3rd album had more keys and felt more pop rock -- wasn't quite my bag. 4th was over the cliff by then...

Listening now with older ears, 3rd album holds up well actually. Real nice vocals.

Funny thing is -- that first singer was ~18 when he did the first album... hardly a viking!

I would concur - I thought (at the time) that the first two albums were really strong. The third album started getting more proggy, exactly as you say. I don’t think I bought the fourth one! I think I’d moved on by then.

Good to see Jeff Scott Soto still out there singing. You probably know he did a tour with Journey (before they got Arnel) and now he is singing with the supergroup Sons of Apollo.

I can agree that Yngwie's music was not as good after Rising Force and Marching Out, or maybe even Trilogy. I prefer his instrumental pieces over the one's with vocals, which is why I prefer is debut album over the rest.

New Yob came out yesterday. Amazing.

I don't believe so, but I have the 1988 CD release of "Rising Force" and it sounds great.

Quoted from mof:

They were - they were released remastered in Japan in 2016 as single discs - I think in the US you have to buy the "polydor years" box set which has the first 4 albums. Import the first 2 from Japan if you just want those... but AFAIK they are the same release

Speaking of Generation Axe, did anyone see G3's tour this year? I saw them in Raleigh, NC. I was pleasantly surprised by Phil Collen's performance; he brought along his side project Delta Deep. They did a cover of Deep Purple's "Mistreated", which was pretty good.

Haha too funny. It was a couple years ago since I shot that show. Used a 24-70 f/2.4 to shoot that set.
