Quoted from thundergod76:

Killer debut album. Great blues and metal mix.

DLR was really trying to show Eddie up by grabbing Steve Vai. Amazing player!

Whatever happened to this guy?

All great choices. That DLR album is way better than it should have been.

Man, the Cults Electric album ... I think we played that more at parties in 1988 than we did Appetite for Destruction (and that was on extremely high rotation...)
rd

The Cult's Sonic Temple is one of my favorite albums. Besides the last few tracks, every song is a masterpiece. We play the shit out of that album when it came out....although they weren't too good live.

I'd know that album cover anywhere!

Man I'm hooked on 70's Priest, I had no idea and feel ashamed at my lack of knowledge considering how my I love that band.

Quoted from Hazoff:

my Preistly Passion starts with Painkiller

You have it backwards from me. That album was last nail in the coffin for me.

Definitely check out the first-4 from Priest... Sad Wings has incredible production. Rocka Rolla is VERY warm and feel-good with a fat warm mid range.

So... what happened to the other metal thread? Why do we have two?

Let's take it back near the beginning then.

This one includes hard rock too I guess. Not just metal.

As much as I played the heck out of Stained Class, sometimes it got a little on my nerves. What I liked about Hell Bent (fifth album) was Halford was able to find another voice range. Although it was the stepping stone to commercial success.

Edit- Album was called Killing Machine in the beginning.

Yep, it was Killing Machine everywhere in the world except for the USA where the record company thought that was too extreme. So it became “Hell bent for leather” in the USA.

Which is funny because “bent” is an English slang word for gay. So I’m sure Rob was having a chuckle at that irony.

I have the original Gull albums on Italian pressings ... and also Hero Hero, the Gull greatest hits double LP ... found them new in this totally random ma and pa record store in Napier in the late 80s.

As we discussed some time back, it’s interesting to listen to Priest from Rocka Rolla all the way through, and watch as they evolve from basically a heavy blues band through to prototype speed metal (rapid fire) and then full metal (SFV and DOTF) and then heavier again with Painkiller onwards.

I quite like the Ripper Owens albums too. Different to Halford obviously but the albums are ok.

I never knew that a few of the Pistol's songs were about them until recently.

The Ripper albums are the only ones I can't listen to, and it isn't because of him. I saw them with him and he was fine, but the music..well isn't for me. Otherwise I can listen to everything from them. Though their style changed, they always had a nice balance of good songwriting, musicianship, and a great live act.

I took my daughter to 5 guys last night for dinner. As we were sitting there eating peanuts waiting this song came on. I asked her if she knew who it was. She said "not sure". i explained I was 6 years old at the time and it was basically the birth of heavy metal. When the lyrics started she said "Ozzy?" I said "close".

#171 6 years ago

And Fairies Wear Boots may be the greatest rock anthem of all time .

Could have been Steppenwolf that gave it it's name.

WASP had a few killer albums, all the way up to The Crimson Idol. Saw them a few years ago and they were great, but they seem to spend all the time in Europe.

The 1st album I still spin every few months. I actually have them to thank for getting my ass signed up for college after high school thanks to seeing this song on MTV. Nothing like having 2 crazy men in a band (Chris Holmes and Tony Richards).

#176 6 years ago

Probably too heavy for this thread...

I got thrown out of a Wasp concert for stage diving, and then snuck right back in.

I guess I'm just a wild child.

Were you wearing your buzzsaw codpiece?

rd

#179 6 years ago

No, but I brought my own hibachi because I lake my meat rare, not raw.

In an interview Blackie Lawless said his only regret he had about becoming a rock star was that he was a darn good baseball player, good enough that he could have gone pro.

#180 6 years ago

Here is a group from my area that just should have made it big time, but just couldn't get recognized in the music world. The name of the band is "Sing Sing" and the lead singer Johnny Ehlert is from my home town. Most of the band members of Sing Sing is from one of Johnnys former bands called "Rampage" that some of you in the Kansas City area may remember from the 1980's.

Here is the main track , " Wheels in Motion " from "Sing Sing's" cd that a few local radio stations played back in 1994.

I wish I was a fly on the wall when that idea came to him.

How about these two? I forgot how good Love Machine was. Always loved Wild Child as well.

The first time I saw them was on a VHS tape we rented called Live and the Lyceum. We never heard their music at that time, we only rented because they looked cool on the cover.

How about a crew from Saskatchewan? Kick Axe! Great 80's. Had the pleasure to see them live a couple years ago to. Vices is killer!

Their follow up album was pretty solid, third was good too, but seemed to lack promotion by their label.

Unrelated, like to give a props to Vid for posting Riot. Checked out their catalog, its all very good!

Funny, I was going to bring them up.

They’re what we call Aussie pub rock .. rock music with a hard rock edge. Honed in the tough pubs of Adelaide and toured around Australia. Exactly the same circuit that AC/DC played.

The Angels were one of the biggest bands in Australia for years, along with Cold Chisel.

After AC/DC broke big time in 1980 with Back in Black, the american record labels set their sights on Aussie for more gold.

They signed both The Angels, Rose Tattoo and Cold Chisel to contracts.

They renamed The Angels to “Angel City” for the US market, to avoid any confusion with the 70s glam band Angel, the guys who wore all white robes. If you saw the two bands together, there could hardly be any confusion ....

None of these new Aussie bands hit it big in the USA, but The Angels had some success on the west coast circuit. In Slash’s book, he talks about sneaking into their shows in Hollywood and how they were a big influence on him. Same for Rose Tattoo ... in fact GnR covered Rose Tattoos Nice Boys (don’t play rock n roll) on their self produced EP “live f**k like a suicide” in 1986.

This is a cool song, not their heaviest, but a good tune nonetheless ... Stand Up, live in 1983. It comes off the album Watch the Red from the same year.

Released everywhere but the US and Japan on this album...weird.

Saskatoon has been been killing it lately. First The Sheepdogs popped a while back and now One Bad Son is currently on fire.
Saw One Bad Son in 2016 at the North Battleford Casino in front of a couple hundred people and now they're playing big Arenas in front of thousands.

Kind of a Black Crowes/Gnr sound for those who haven't heard them.

I absolutely love this album. That tune is the WORST song on it! “Whipped cream... put it all over your body...”

Also, Rob Trujillo from Metallica on bass!

What a great song to blast first thing in the morning.

Good pit!

Laid to rest.

Ariya. Releasing albums since 1984/85! Often referred to as the "Russian Iron Maiden"

and to Germany for some Running Wild!

It was sad earlier to hear the passing of Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries. Maybe not the hardest of rock, but this song always takes me back. RIP.

The Almighty Strut - "Cheap Thrill Looks"

#199 6 years ago

The best rock/hard rock band you’ve never heard of. Kings X.

They seem to be lauded more by musos than by the public. I’ve been into them since 1987 when their first album came out, after reading a really good review in Kerrang (that was how we got our metal news pre Internet ...)

Always really liked that song, hard to believe real music use to actually be the most popular.
