Quoted from Rockytop:

I would try to balance out the songs a bit from the other albums, so there could be more variety when trying to get all the album modes.
Right now you have:
9 from AFD
6 from UYI I
3 from UYI II
3 from CD
1 from Lies (although Lies is not an album mode)
With that in mind, here would be my selections if I were picking them. (Really if I had it my way, the whole discography would be there)
UYI I - Don't Damn Me
UYU II - 14 Years, KOHD, Get in the Ring, Locomotive
CD - There Was a Time, IRS, Sorry
I would love to have a few from Lies like their cover of Mama Kin or Used to Love Her.

Spotify just told me that Don’t Damn Me was my top song of 2020

But yeah the concept behind the pin is the Not In This Lifetime tour, and unfortunately the songs you mentioned weren’t part of it...

Given what they did play on that tour, they did a great job with the selection.

#4230 3 years ago
Quoted from Rockytop:

5 of the 10 songs I mentioned were played on the tour. KOHD, Locomotive, Used to Love Her, Sorry, There Was a Time

Gotcha, don’t recall those from the show I went to

Edit: they did play KOHD but not the others, just looked it up. Those must’ve been added later in the tour

Quoted from estrader:

I don’t know about that...I paid in full for my LE several weeks ago and still waiting on shipping information.

From JJP or a distributor? If the latter, you may be in a queue for after the CE run.

#4454 3 years ago
Quoted from zaphX:

I love Karl's streams and look forward to watching them...after I get my game. I don't want to spoil the joy of discovery before my CE lands.
Hopefully not too much longer.

Same here. I haven’t even watched a video of the lights. Trying to be totally surprised.

So the verdict is carbon balls? Are they a significant upgrade over stock? The vendor’s description mentions that carbon balls aren’t super shiny either...

#4729 3 years ago
Quoted from chuckwurt:

Standard shiny balls are still plenty shiny. Get those and never look back.

Per posts above, the concern with standard balls is the magnet and getting magnetized

#4731 3 years ago
Quoted from LTG:

I'd have new ones handy in case they magnetize quick.

I like to clean the easy to reach areas and give it a coat of wax and let it rip.
LTG : )

Am I misunderstanding him here about the likelihood of replacement balls magnetizing?

#4732 3 years ago

Also from ballbaron.com:

USE IN GAMES WITH MAGNETS: Some games which use magnets will rapidly magnetize the Ninja ball after just a few plays – those we are aware of include Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones (Stern), and Dialed In. Other modern Stern games can cause chrome pinballs including the Ninja ball to become magnetized over time, leading to balls sticking together (usually in the trough). If you suddenly experience drained balls not being “seen” by the game, your balls have become magnetized. If your game has magnetic features, try our Polaris carbon pinballs.

#4734 3 years ago
Quoted from chuckwurt:

That’s ball baron. All theirs magnetize.
Titan pinball’s standard shiny balls don’t.

Thanks

Quoted from konghusker:

Extra lights are literally just the under and behind cab light strips that you can easily add yourself for $20. The LE art imo is the best as well, but either choice is great. Both are beautiful, but other than a minimal ball lock mech, and glitter, you can add all the other features onto the LE for under $1000 easy.

Topper?
Signed by the band?

Plus the backbox and undercab are part of the lightshow, they're scripted

Quoted from screaminr:

Pin graphics has released new Sabian symbol decals that are theme correct .
I'm going to stick with Zildjian because they're the ones I remember seeing in film clips growing up .[quoted image][quoted image]

Fwiw, Adler and Sorum both used Zildjian during their GnR tenure.

I feel the Zildjian decals look better.

Only drawback is that they won’t match the Sabians that Frank uses on the video screen.

#5008 3 years ago
Quoted from Looprunner:

I would like the old school video as well. I'm guessing it's not high quality enough for the machine? The new stuff seems to be pretty high quality.

The best pro-shot stuff from the original band (by original I’m saying the UYI lineup- the most recent cool Axl ) was the Live Era release, which is DVD quality. So somewhat of a downgrade.

But don’t forget that JJP spent weeks (months?) doing the video sync to the original tracks. So unless you want to spend countless hours on syncing the video... you’d have to use the live audio... but then it wouldn’t sync with the light show..

Let’s just be happy for all the cool work that they did on editing the recent live stuff! I mean yeah Axl isn’t as dangerous as he was in the 90s... but he looks a heck of a lot better than he did a few years ago during Chinese Democracy (fat Axl)

No word yet on when LEs go back in line? Patiently waiting

Still waiting on my CE. Haven’t even been invoiced yet. Sorry to say it might be a while...

#5386 3 years ago

For those who have their machine already, can you plug in headphones? Or do you have to use the Bluetooth?

It’s Bluetooth only, what models have confirmed to work well?

Thx

#5387 3 years ago
Quoted from PtownPin:

Really? I was invoiced weeks ago...I was told JJP requested all funds for CE's...no idea when mine will ship

I have only been asked to pay the $1000 JJP deposit so far

I honestly think it makes an enormous difference

Why not just get a freestanding Polk sub (found easily on CL for $50)? What am I missing.

#5482 3 years ago
Quoted from punkin:

Pretty much the whole conversation.

Forgive me for asking a serious question! For clarification, I have the CE on order, so I'm primarily concerned about the bass... since hopefully I'll have sufficient mids/highs from the soundbar.

Ps. I have read all 5,481 posts on this thread

#5490 3 years ago
Quoted from punkin:

You've probs read the post by Dan then where he explained about the sound fields and how he tuned the system to complement them etc. There's a post a couple up where he also talks about your soundbar (lucky bastard), but if you just search pinwoofer you'll get the jist.
Blunt is my nature, it's not you.

Thanks, I’ll circle back. I definitely appreciate what Dan and other modders do for this community

Apparently they're working on it .

Yes they said the next game update should include fixes for WiFi and bluetooth issues

#5910 3 years ago
Quoted from jarozi:

They still working through the CE's? Any word when they'll start LE's again? I haven't heard a peep from JJP since they took my LE deposit back in early Oct so just checking in here.

Still haven’t had full payment request from JJP for my CE yet. So it’s still gonna be a bit...

Quoted from jhoward1082:

It’s interesting that it looks like SEs are back on the line (which I thought no one wanted) and are shipping out as early as next week. No idea what that means exactly for the production schedule as I’m pretty sure they still have CE orders to fulfill and we’ve been hearing for months that they were pumping out all the CEs at once before they switched back to LE/SE

Where are you getting this info?

#5987 3 years ago
Quoted from jhoward1082:

Automated, Pinball Star and Flip N Out all posted today about receiving new SE stock next week

Just got asked by JJP to pay in full for my CE. They said it would ship within 2 weeks. I know I was at the end of the CE run since I ordered shortly before it sold out. I suspect they are putting the SEs back on the line afterwards.

Edit: shipping co just called, it’s arriving Friday.

Quoted from PinballGalore:

My slash mini Gibson’s have finally arrived. Way ahead of my actual game.
I’ll try them up top with the CE topper, all lined up and nicely lit from the topper leds. if that won’t work I’ll have to think of something else, they’re gorgeous. [quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

PinballGalore cool idea... love me some Appetite Amber! Think one of mine would work as a topper?

Quoted from AvidPinPlayer:

Question, is the new code update worthwhile? I'm on the original version 1.08 and I understand that the latest is V1.14. This is my first Jersey Jack pinball and it seems that updating the code is not easy. I was told that because the pin was logged into my WiFi that code updates will load automatically, but that has not been the case. Conversely, using an USB stick seems tricky at best and complicated by the fact that I have a Mac computer so the download tool is different. I tried to download the "unebutin" tool for my Mac, but I can't open it up, same with "Rufus." If the new code is worthwhile I will continue to try; otherwise, I will just skip it. How about trying to do it via the WiFi instead of using an USA stick?, is one method better than the other?
I firmly believe not to fix something that is not broken.

I just updated my new GnR to the latest code seamlessly. Just went to the menu, connected to Wi-Fi, then hit download update, it was done in less than 10 minutes. Keep the coin door open

#6246 3 years ago
Quoted from Eskaybee:

There is a setting but it just reduces how often the shaker goes off, not the intensity. I tuned it down but it ruined the ‘you could be mine’ song effect so turned it back. But, for someone who hates shakers as much as keefer does, you’d think it would be more subtle. Ah well, I’m used to it now, just turn the volume up haha.

Eskaybee where is this setting? I couldn’t find it either.

#6261 3 years ago

Where is the plunge supposed to settle on the playfield? I checked all angles but mine still goes SDTM a fair amount. I can try adjusting the gate as others have mentioned but want to understand where it is supposed to go first.

#6264 3 years ago
Quoted from Eskaybee:

Just confirmed. Settings > coil settings > general > maximum shaker strength.
Setting it on low though really takes away the ‘you could be mine’ vibe.

Thanks for the info

#6285 3 years ago

CE #299 in the house!

Having a lot of fun. A few observations:

- The bass is pretty nonexistent out of the box. A sub add on is necessary if you want a good music experience.

- The stock monitor settings are awful. Way too washed out. Changed mine to Brightness of 0 and Contrast of 100 and ironically it’s pretty bright and no longer washed out but also not oversaturated

- I really wish we had a printed manual. After I already set the pin up, I found the manual online, which had way better setup instructions, color images, and if you have the topper, way clearer information.

- I feel like the shaker needed to be turned to low so it didn’t shake the house down. Feel like it’s perfect at Low.

- I had to make several adjustments to areas the ball would hang, or to avoid drains SDTM off the plunge. I guess this is part of the ‘NIB experience’.

- The packaging and delivery of the pin were spot on. Great job by JJP.

Thanks to everyone in the Pinside community, and to the JJP team that watches this thread, so that I could address these issues efficiently!

#6474 3 years ago

Repost from the CE thread..

MT45 showed the use of a small felt dot to reduce SDTM plunges. I also was getting tons of SDTM plunges, even after using the washer trick and checking all angles. I saw his post and tried the felt button, but I didn’t have one that thin and it would block the ball. So I tried one of these small hemispheric furniture dots. Perfect! Now it meanders slowly to either flipper and hardly ever goes SDTM. Try it out if you’re in the same boat!

I went from 1.16 to 1.17 via USB and it was very quick. Delta upgrade.

Is 1.17 worth it? I’m still on 1.14 because of all the issues that people have posted about

#7089 3 years ago
Quoted from Leachdude:

How are the shaker effects on this game? I need to get one ordered.

Good, almost too good! I have mine turned down to low and it’s still intense.

#7092 3 years ago
Quoted from Leachdude:

The stock flipper rubber on this game is junk, so soft and brittle at the same time. It's crazy how they now use these nice rubbers on the playfield and give you the crappiest flipper rubber they can find.

I replaced mine with Titans from day one, and they are already getting worn down after maybe 75 games. It might just be that the multi balls on this thing wreak havoc on the rubbers

#7158 3 years ago

I’m still on 1.14 and terrified.

Picked up an SE. Not a huge GNR fan (or band themes in general). Holy smokes, this machine is amazing. Just ordered clips for a sub and can’t wait. I’m now contemplating ordering an LE. Anyone had time on both? This seems like it would feel faster outside of muktiball, but the light show, ball locks, and mini play field look pretty awesome.
As an aside, my game is leveled left-right, but my skill shot is draining a notable portion of the time. It’s not immediately clear what the issue is. Anyone experienced that?

Quoted from Rocanich:

Hi gunners,
finished the topper incl. soundbar yesterday. Now the LE is the better CE because of it's artwork [quoted image]

Lol so you also added the sparkle playfields, synchronized LEDs in the topper, Coma lock, signed band card/drumsticks, back/under lighting, laser rail etching, skull/rose sculptures, and mirrored backbox/RadCals? My CE would beg to differ.

But honestly, I thought the LE artwork was better too until I saw both. The sparkle and the mirroring are hard to photograph but are killer in person. Every tooth of the daggers on the Barron shine in the light, same with the lightning on the backbox. Take a look at one if you get the chance.

Your mod looks good tho. Hopefully more to come!

#7691 3 years ago

Anyone know how long it takes to get replacement parts from JJP? I requested a replacement rotating light for mine that broke several weeks ago, and they said they would send one but no word since then.

#7694 3 years ago
Quoted from wdbthree:

They’ve sent me multiple parts over the years, including several this past five months for GNR (including a spotlight assembly!). Always shipped within day or so. Probably worth following up.

Thanks, I will. Was it hard to replace the spot?

#7696 3 years ago
Quoted from Skyemont:

Patch question. I know patches have pairs you need to get. Like the gun patch and rose patch to complete the set. Does it show it on the screen what the matches are for each patch? Say I choose lol gets, it should show somewhere the other 3 I need to get!

I think the patch sets are intended to be a surprise/something to figure out on your own.

#7976 3 years ago
Quoted from JDub03:

Two questions for a JJP newbie. Where do you connect an external sub? Also, where can I pull 12v power for a cabinet lighting kit? Thank you!

JDub03 When you lift the playfield, the stock subwoofer that’s pointing downwards has a free set of metal terminals. Get your signal from there. I used alligator clips on speaker wire. Then you wire it through the hole in the back of the cabinet to your external subwoofer. Of course, it has to be a powered sub since all you’re getting from the cabinet is the signal.

Or, you can get a Pinwoofer kit

As far as lighting, I think somebody said they used one of the USB outlets behind the coin door to supply power for extra LEDs.

My launch will often drain right down the middle. Any tips on what and how to bend to fix this?

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/the-official-jjp-gnr-thread/page/130#post-6161174

This fix works great, went from high amount of SDTM plunges to hardly ever.

Wish this could be made a key post... this question keeps coming up.

#8309 3 years ago
Quoted from daveyvandy:

Same thing happened to me within a day of owning the machine on my left spotlight. Sent a message to JJP and they are sending me a replacement assembly as well.

Please tell me when it ships. I’ve been asking for one for two months and nothing ...

#8660 3 years ago

JJP finally sent me a replacement spotlight after two months... works fine so far... but right after I installed it, the other light’s servo stopped working! Sounds like these have issues. They are super cool, hope they don’t go the way of the flying monkey...

I did notice that the replacement servo is white, whereas the original was black, so maybe it’s a different stock.

And yeah, it’s a super easy replacement once the playfield is up. Two screws and three connectors, all readily accessible (at least for the left spot).

#8665 2 years ago
Quoted from Mattyk:

My LE is 662. So far my spotlights are working. I feel like it’s a ticking time bomb. I made sure there is enough slack in the wires before playing it.

I checked the slack on mine, both spots are fine, that wasn’t my issue.

#8863 2 years ago
Quoted from PinMonk:

That may work, but I would think 0 brightness would muddy the shadows too much.

That was me. Try it. It’s counterintuitive but I think it’s the best look with 100% contrast. However I haven’t tried messing with the color temp.

#8876 2 years ago
Quoted from PinballGalore:

I’m thinking there should be some sort of sequence we can follow on the flippers, kind of like what you would do for an Easter egg. When the ball is stuck in the jets, you could flip 2L 3R, for example, and that would give all jets one hit to clear the ball. Much better than taking the glass off and losing that balls play.

If you wait about 20 seconds without touching anything, then the machine will fire the jets and it should eject the stuck ball without having to take the glass off etc.

#8890 2 years ago
Quoted from PinballGalore:

Yes but when you’re down to one ball in a song, and the rock o meter isn’t waiting around for those twenty seconds, you got a problem. Ask me how I know

Agreed! I was just replying to the comment that you had to take the glass off.

#8916 2 years ago
Quoted from daveyvandy:

Am I supposed to remove these felt/foam inserts between the legs and the cabinet? When I unboxed they were there for protection and I assumed they were the protectors between the legs and the cabinet. The unboxing instructions doesn't mention them so maybe I'm just dumb and they don't belong there.
[quoted image]

JJP GnR manual states that you can take them off or leave them on for extra protection.

#8960 2 years ago
Quoted from Mattyk:

Add me to the list of broken spotlights. My right one broke and won’t move up and down. Doesn’t seem to be full motion left to right either. I think it happened during mR Brownstone. I had plenty of slack in the wires.
For those that received a replacement, are they better built and have any broken?

Not sure, it has a white servo housing as opposed to the original one that was black. So far so good but I just installed it a few days ago.

#8978 2 years ago

How was the install? Any tips? Was it plug and play or did you need to assemble anything?

Left one was easy, two screws and plug and play. Not sure about the right one though (I guess I’ll find out!!)

#9431 2 years ago

Got a chance to go under the hood for the first time in a while. A few notes- all three regarding posts by @fooflighter. Thanks for all the info bud!

First, I greatly appreciate your tip about using the felt pad to keep the ball from getting stuck by the lower pop. So far it seems to work well. Mods - can we make this a key post? https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/the-official-jjp-gnr-thread/page/178#post-6253643

Second, I tried changing the monitor to sRGB color space and I do think it’s better. I preferred brightness at 50 and contrast at 40, but I’m sure each eye has their own preferences. Both your and my suggestions are way better than stock though. I recommend to anyone who hasn’t played around with the monitor settings, do so.

Third, thanks for the tip on swapping the right spot. It is more involved than the left spot for sure, and your guide saved me a good amount of time. Of note, I didn’t have to remove the plastic shields to get the spot out. After the metal plate and the two bolts on the back were off, I could carefully guide the spot out the back and leave the shields in place. You mention them in your guide and you don’t explicitly say to remove them, but just wanted to pass along that the spot can pretty easily be swapped with them in place.

Lastly, my stock servos were DGS and the replacements were both Hobby King. They are white instead of black, but nothing a little sharpie can’t fix . Hopefully these won’t fail.

My CE (Feb build date) came with clear washers on some posts but not all. Can someone who has added washers recommend which posts should get washers, based on those that are most susceptible and/or easiest to add? I haven’t done much pinball disassembly so I’d probably skip ones that are difficult to access. Thanks in advance.

#9791 2 years ago

Noob question, what about making a single slit in clear washers and then just slipping them on so as to avoid all that disassembly? I know it won’t look quite as clean as a fully intact washer, but maybe not that noticeable and still looking better than torn artwork?

#9811 2 years ago
Quoted from fooflighter:

You have to get them under the posts...around them doesn't matter, plus there's no way you could make a slit in these (you can score/notch the edge to make them fit against something though) , they are rigid PETG

fooflighter thanks for all the pics. In your first image, did you notch the washer to get it so close to the lane divider? What’s the best way to notch these? Any particular metal washer that you used for the posts that wouldn’t take the clear washers?

#11632 2 years ago
Quoted from Eskaybee:

Doesn’t sound good in theory to me. But does get me thinking. I wonder if KEEFER can use his brainpower to create some kind of rule:
• reduce ball saver time drastically
• songs start with one ball
• lockdown bar button is then used to add your additional ‘locked’ balls into play. So if you have 4 locked balls at the beginning of a song, then you get to use the action button at anytime to add a ball into play. The more balls you have in play, the higher your song level. out lane switch temporary disables the action button.
I don’t know. Food for thought. A little late in the game to change those rules though probably.

That would be cool. Really like the pin and I’m a huge GnR fan but I feel like I’m missing all the great assets because I’m always staring at the flippers!

#11635 2 years ago
Quoted from Mattyk:

My LE cab speaker had secondary male connections. So I took 14 gauge speaker wire and crimped on female connectors. Hooked onto the cab speaker and to the speaker level inputs on the sub. Best $120 I’ve ever spent. Now the songs are fuller and you can set your bass how you like it

Yea in my case I just clipped the alligators onto the secondary ‘male’ tabs

It wouldn't really make sense in the context of the game (concert) and the lighting likely wouldn't sync because of different timings. I would like younger Axl, but that's too much to give up.

Well, since the game uses the album masters, the music videos really should line up, unless the video used a radio edit, or have extended sequences (November rain?)

However, a lot of the songs used in the game did not have fully produced music videos, so unless you use the ‘bare bones’ ones from the backdrop at their concerts (humping skeleton pun intended), then you wouldn’t have the source material to do it.

What would REALLY be cool is if someone could substitute the Live at the Ritz live footage for those songs that were around back then, so you get Peak young axl, but the timings would certainly be way off and that would require a lot of manual work

Quoted from Vespula:

I was under the impression the concert footage was edited and synced as best of their ability to match the album master tracks.

Anyone know the definitive fix for the ball getting stuck on the upper right bumper and post?

Someone earlier in the thread used a furniture leg button protector cut in half and stuck next to the bumper in the problem area. It has worked for me. Just enough to keep the ball from getting nestled there.

#12008 2 years ago
Quoted from Wzpin:

Yes it's the clear part. Is it all one sticker?

It’s all one sticker. As mentioned, you can get/buy additional ones from JJP, at least you could in the past. There’s also a prior post on here about how to best remove and apply new one (search posts about the record slipping because sometimes you need to remove the sticker to access the central screw to fix this problem).

My May LE build does not have the washers or longer posts.
When I created a ticket with JJP to get them, this was their response:
Do to supply issues we are unable to send out washers or longer posts.
JJP does not recommend altering your playfield.
If you feel you need to add these items,
Pinball Life and Marco Specialties have the information and can get you what you need.

That’s disappointing. I was a JJP fan but not only will they not acknowledge or fix the playfield issue, but they also won’t go to the trouble to send affected customers a few bucks worth of a band-aid?

Quoted from GymRatt:

Pinwoofer has a base tune you set it at. For me it seems to be quite satisfactory at the setting they recommend. Along with the base line for the amp settings. They also have you adjust several of the sound setting in the machine for a much better balanced of all the sounds from music mode to call outs and the regular sound effects. Everyone's sounds taste are different which is what is so nice about this set up. You have the gain controls as well as bass, mid and treble. I set my machine in jukebox mode and played around with the settings while it was at a pretty high volume and i ended up back where Pinwoofer found the best settings. The GNR pinwoofer kit also replaces the tweeters in the back box. The ones from JJP are quite inferior. Unfortunately for the CE owners. JJP used the same inferior tweeters in the sound bar which renders the sound bar useless when upgrading the sound system. The sound bar is a sealed unit and the tweeters are not accessible to upgrade. Pinwoofer found that if the soundbar is left in the sound stream after the system upgrade. It pollutes the sound qulity dragging down the sound quality. The sound bar just becomes a silent topper.

Beg to differ, I added a powered sub and this preamp to my CE and it sounds quite excellent. Though I agree the stock sound was pretty lacking until I added both. And I’m very picky about audio. So I would argue that the tweeters (at least the ones in the soundbar) can sound good with the right preamplification and equalization. I posted this in the CE forum.

Nobsound NS-10P Mini Vacuum Tube Preamp Audio Hi-Fi Stereo Pre-Amplifier Treble & Bass Control https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07719G56B

If the same tweeters are indeed in the backbox and the CE soundbar (I have not confirmed this personally) then maybe this preamp would also work well on the LE/SE.

Don’t get me wrong, I think PinWoofer is a great idea, I’m just showing that good quality sound can be had with the stock CE speakers as well.

Yes, but I will say that JJP's implementation in GnR isn't the best I've experienced. Seems weak to me, but I haven't tweaked it.

I agree with the other poster, the shaker on the CE is violent at Medium, I’d hate to feel High. Low is pretty good.

Quoted from websherpa:

I happen to have one of these for my vinyl setup that I can test on an LE. Did you outline where to hook it into the system? (I will also try and check your CE Posting, thank you!)

The reason I chose that preamp is because it has 3.5mm female in and out, and the soundbar has a 3.5mm in, so you can just plug it inline with any 3.5mm male to male headphone cable. But I haven’t dug into the backbox to see if the backbox speaker inputs are the same. So I guess it depends on the backbox speaker input.

If anyone thinks that installing the longer locking post alone would prevent the pooling and artwork tearing, let me dispel that fantasy. My GNR lane post has significant damage and it came from the factory with the longer locking post.

For those who attempted a repair on the upper playfield post - did you replace it with the longer locking post? Asking because it would involve taking off the upper playfield and removing all those wires which seems like a pretty time intensive task. Would just ironing the pooled area and adding the larger washer likely be enough?

Thanks

They are sending out post/washer kits if they're required. Speak to your distributor. I had some sets sent to me for my first batch of LE's.

I am using the JJP post upgrade kit they sent me. The posts are all the same longer ones, there is no metal sleeve or adapted post for the upper playfield. However, there is a notched washer so that it will sit above the lane divider at the GNR lane without modification (of course I didn’t notice this until after I notched my own!)

#12909 2 years ago
Quoted from PanzerFreak:

Have wondered that myself. There seems to be a lot of affected playfields but I've also read multiple posts from December, March, and April owners that don't have any issues.
What's interesting on my July build game is that a playfield manufacturing date isn't stamped anywhere on the playfield. I looked all over for it. Game has all of the latest fixes and hoping that it doesn't have any issues. I should probably still remove the posts in question at this time and apply mylar squares while still under 50 plays.

I got a service bulletin from JJP regarding the spotlights. I have the PDF if anyone wants a copy. The description is here:
"A piece on the bracket is causing the link to flex and over time the link will break.
A small modification needs to be performed to the Spotlight bracket to correct this issue"
It's dated May 28, so hopefully any parts after that don't need modification.

Thank you for this! I was on my second set of spotlights. Already after a few games, I could see wear at the corner that they tell you to remove.

Not sure why they make it so complicated in the document. The left spotlight you can free up with those two screws on top and avoid all the other steps. Cut and replace. The right one I didn’t even remove, I just cut it in place. A little trickier but possible. I just used wire cutters and they did the job fine.

#14250 2 years ago

As someone who has had two spotlight replacements myself… I do think the breakages will continue unless you do the “fix”. The issue is that in certain orientations, the arm hits the spot and puts pressure on it until it eventually breaks. I’m not sure how changing the servo would help this problem. Just cut the end off that hits the spot like in the bulletin. Takes 10 minutes. Now there’s definitely no friction on the arm.

#14261 2 years ago
Quoted from PinMonk:

I believe Zaphx said the cheap servos JJP uses stock do not shut off when they hit max, so that may be why they are burning out. The EMAX ES3054 apparently is smart enough to turn off when maxed out, so it doesn't burn out.

The problem with both of mine was broken linkages, not servo burnouts. I guess both are issues. The service bulletin only addresses the former.

As PinMonk said, a small piece of something at the right edge of that bumper skirt will prevent the problem and is pretty much unseen. I posted a while back about a felt furniture leg dot cut in half at the edge of the skirt has worked great. Black so it’s nit noticeable. Doesn’t interfere with bumper or play and haven’t had a hang up since. Kudos to the OP who had the idea

My LE Arrived today - 9/21 build. Zero playfield issues that I can see. I put 40 games on it today just breaking it in (I haven't even brought it in from the garage).
Everything seems to work perfectly, but I do have the orbit issue others have noted. When the ball comes around the orbit to the left side, it hits the top of the left sling. I haven't leveled it yet so maybe I can fix it without having to bend the guide. The only other minor issue is the shaker really rattles the glass/cabinet. Nothing some rattle tape can't fix.
The game has way more flow than I thought based on watching gameplay videos. It's also a nudge-heavy game (in a good way).
I bought it for the light show, and I might keep it for the gameplay. I'm pleasantly surprised so far.

No what that means is that I will probably sell or trade the one I have.

I felt the same way at first. I would hang in there. At first it seems like a lot. But then when you realize your main objective - get through full-length songs - you realize that you really need those MBs to have a chance of getting to the end. Then you realize that there’s a whole new set of strategies that you learn to use on a game like this. Such as getting as many balls as possible into the lock so that you can focus on a a ball or two for the main objective. Or learning how to hit your objective shots despite having several balls in the lower playfield. When I really started to understand the purpose and the strategy related to all the MBs, I began to appreciate and enjoy the game a lot more. I’m certain this was all by design, again, to allow for the player to get through all the full length songs. The art of Eric’s game design.

The only thing I lament is that I hardly ever get to see all the cool animations and video on the main display because of all the action… but then again, that’s the case in most games anyways… and more the reason to invite your friends over so you can take it all in while they play!

Jeez I drop in for my daily dose and snarkiness abounds! Reckon it’s been a rough week. I recommend a bourbon and ginger to take the edge off.
My take on the latest non-snarky posts is that man yes the LE is pretty and I love the upper pf, but I’ve never had the chance to play the SE and I’d like to see how much more smooth the game would be. Honestly I think it’s kind of garbage that manufacturers started making different versions. You know they start with the game they want and then think of things to take away so they entice us to spring for the fancy stuff. Make a game and sell it, man! I learned about what a butter cabinet was today and I rolled my eyes so hard they came back around from the bottom.
But also doesn’t the coma lock just drop the ball into the trough when you win or lose the ball anyway? I’ve haven’t seen one actually, so maybe it’s cooler than it sounds. Does it kick the ball back in if you get the coma multiball?

It does just hold the ball there and drain it either way. If you succeed, it auto launches at the same time to give the perception that it’s the same ball

However, it is very cool looking. Seeing the gate lift up to save your ball is a trip. There’s a glowing green LED that shines over the ball that matches the color and brightness pattern of the playfield, like it’s teasing you to save it. And then the despair you feel when the exit gate lifts and takes your ball after you drain!!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Took part of the afternoon to install Cliffys. I hadn’t done Cliffys before, but it really wasn’t all that bad. Thanks to fooflighter for the install tips. Of note, I did NOT have to mess with the wires to do the install. I had just enough slack to move the guitar neck so that I could perform all required steps without disconnecting any wires to the upper playfield or cutting any zip ties. That was the most intimidating part of the install so I’m glad that worked out.

I don’t know how that last pic got in there!!

No. There are instructions on Cliff’s page. You have to remote the first two nuts and loosen the others, to be able to slip it in there. I also had to loosen a few nuts on top (shooter lane exit gate, etc) since they were holding the rail down.

My kit came with the trough piece. I ordered the standard set without the extras (such as magnet and lane protectors).

I’m newish to pinball owning too and Cliffy scoop installing also seemed scary initially but was not bad at all. Follow key posts from Vitty and Fooflighter for photos and steps. BUT, I did not disconnect a single cable or cut any zip ties. So after removing the 4 screws that hold the upper playfield just had enough room to carefully lift it, slide a microfiber towel to avoid scratching stuff and it gave me enough room to work on the scoop. Best thing was to lay all the removed pieces and nuts/bolts in a straight line to be able to track my steps back to put it back together, and take a photo before disassembling each step so you remember how to put it back.

Having a problem with SDTM drains from the left guitar lock. It started after I installed the scoop Cliffy. Not sure why, because all connections are tight and both Playfields are level. I did record the ball in slow-mo, and it is careening off the left catwalk as others have noticed. Not sure why it wouldn’t do it before, I can’t recall a single SDTM during prior to the Cliffy install. I did increase the lock release duration to maximum which helped (I think the coil was releasing too soon and shooting up against the ball as it was being released which made it worse) But I still get one in five or so SDTM. Any ideas? I know some people have used bumpers to cushion the catwalk impact but I feel like that would be a last resort, and I’m not sure why it worked fine before the Cliffy install without a bumper being needed.

Tried to link slow mo video prior to adjusting the coil:

Thanks. I did record it in slow mo on the iPhone. I guess when I uploaded it to Google Photos it un-slow-mo’ed it

But the plunge on this game is so terrible, it really doesn’t matter

#20411 2 years ago

Umm it’s a pretty common sentiment that the lack of a true plunge and a fairly simplistic skill shot on this game make for a pretty underwhelming plunge experience.

Scan through the reviews and you will see that I’m far from the only one who feels this way.

Don’t get me wrong, I love this pin, but this is its weakest part.

I think it would help if they modified the code so that an underplunge automatically ends the skill shot and results in an auto plunge to start the ball. Otherwise it’s too easy to just under plunge until you get at least some skill shot, which to be honest, doesn’t really take any skill

My concern is if it’s normal after almost a year of ownership to have screws still coming off? I had coil stop screws come off, spot light screws and brackets snap off, railing screws, coil screws, circuit board screws all fall off in the past. Is this normal and expected or abnormal?

I haven’t had that problem in over a year of ownership. Not sure why yours would be so finicky

Quoted from Vespula:

Well I've joined the servo failure club.
After almost 900 plays in 4 months of ownership my left spotlight isn't moving vertically. That's the only issue with my spotlights.
The arms appear to be intact and it moves up and down manually. I got the emax servos on hand but not the upgrade kit from pu.
Is it a quick fix just to replace the left vertical and get 100% functional? Or once I'm in there I might as well replace both and the housing and arm with the upgrade kit?
if I do the left one fully I'm going to end up doing the right one fully too.
Bummer is that mezel is out of the pinball universe spotlight upgrade kits..
Rather than wait, I'm going to have to order direct from pinball universe in Germany. And because of the crazy high shipping cost it would make sense that I just order extra of these kits again since it worked out And there was enough demand the last two times I did this. (If anybody is wondering I don't have a kit myself because I sold The one I was holding on to "just in case" to a pinsider who needed one a while back). Now I need one.
if anybody wants a kit let me know in a PM to claim a spot. I'll have six extra
I should have them in about 10 days if timeframe works like last 2 times.. cost is. $110 shipped to your door.. USA only.

JJP replaced mine for free x2 and I haven’t had any issues after I applied the service bulletin they sent out. But maybe they’re not doing replacements anymore

Quoted from pinballjah:

Heard that there are only a few hundred left to be produced and that's it. So if you are on the fence, better get your order in quick. Not sure if they will cut the total production below the 5,000 expected? The number plate doesn't say 1 of 5000 so they can produce any number they want I guess.

JJP told me they are ending the run at the end of the summer. With over 3500 shipped already, it is possible that they’ll reach 5000?

Say 3600 LEs produced so far. Add 500 Ce and say 500 SE? 4600 total. Started production around Sept 2020? Say 20 months. That’s about 230/month on average, but I’m sure they are more efficient now, after 1.5 years of production. Say 250/month production. Four and a half more months until end of summer. That would estimate 4750. That’s pretty darn close to 5000 LEs. And a total ballpark.

I bet they complete the run.

I’ll apply Mylar over the wings, see if that keeps them from lifting over time. At least it can’t hurt.

Quoted from Xelz:

What’s the consensus on installing Cliffy’s scoop protector vs. keeping the OEM part?

Not sure why you wouldn’t just get the Cliffy. It works great and with the “quick” install technique it’s like a 45 minute job.

#21248 2 years ago
Quoted from Xelz:

I have the Cliffy (and plan to install the other Cliffy protectors elsewhere). There have been reports of Cliffy’s scoop protector edges lifting on GNR, hence the question.

Quoted from Shmilder:

I've had two cliffys fail/lift up within the scoop. Not sure why, they were installed correctly. Ball hitting the fold seems to straighten it out.

You guys definitely removed the OEM metal ring lining the inside of the scoop right? It wasn’t super clear from the Cliffy install instructions. But that’s critical to get a good fit of the Cliffy.

My Cliffy hasn’t budged in a year and snapped in like a glove.

Quoted from DinoBob:

Ok, added a small piece of felt to the ball guide. Its slowing the ball down, resulting in balls exiting from the skill shot to land on the right flipper.

That’s what I did about a year ago and it works pretty well.

Quoted from c818919taylor:

Is JJP still giving owners an opportunity to buy replacement playfields?
I havent heard or read anything in a bit. Dont mind paying but this form of pooling and chipping is warranty…clearly engineering problems with post choice/design and physics.
Intrinsic value will catch up JJP. Stay on the correct side, cause the other side takes years to repair

Quoted from PinMonk:

I'm still on a list for one this summer, AFAIK. Don't need it currently because the Sept '21 build playfield has been very solid so far.

I was recently told by JJP that replacement playfields are planned for after the end of the GnR run, which is tentatively the end of the summer

Not in this lifetime, lol. Pun intended! I have zero interest in Toy Story, but I’m sure it’ll do well and hats off to JJP for making such a variety of game themes.

Sounds like experienced players are already getting to the TS final wizard mode with ease. Lawlor indeed mentioned that they made it a lot easier on this pin. Can’t imagine TS having lasting appeal in a home environment if it’s that easy to beat, unless you’re a TS fanatic.

By contrast, GnR final wizard mode… not in my lifetime!

Quoted from RA77:

I have officially now joined the broken spotlight club.
My guess is they have been busted for ages, I never cared to pay attention until now.
I installed a replacement playfield controller board for my relentless shooter sensor issue and thought I better check all devices after fitment,
Quickly realised both the spots were no good broken links and a possible servo fail on right hand side unit.
Good news is the shooter sensor problem may actually be fixed
I need to get time to test some more.
Hoping JJP support may be kind enough to assist with upgraded parts to fix this failure.
[quoted image]

Quoted from Mattyk:

Yeah I’ve added additional grease to the linkage to make them operate smoother. Since the last code update issues with servos haven’t been as widespread as they corrected some issues.

Make sure you have done JJP’s service bulletin fix. I haven’t had a breakage since.

Quoted from Kenz:

Need some advise. GNR definitely could do with better quality sound. I have a unused Rel Strata III sub. It has its a built in amp and crossover. Would I be able to connect this up via the headphone socket ?

Not the headphone socket. Use alligator clips on the cabinet sub connected to speaker wire, then connect those to your sub speaker wire inputs

Quoted from Mar3nBu:

I’ll have to replace the blue snubber again and wondering if I can do it without disassembling all of the upper playfield. Does anyone know what the size of the hex bolts that hold the blue snubber pieces and have any recommendation for a tiny one that would fit in the very tight spot available?

Did you try just unscrewing the upper playfield, putting a microfiber cloth under it, and rotating it to get access to what you need? I was able to install a scoop cliffy and go back a second time to do more adjustments without having to disassemble much of anything.

Quoted from andrewket:

JJP just reached out to see if I still want a replacement/spare CE playfield and I’m torn. I put myself on the waitlist over a year ago. Maybe two?
Main Playfield = $499.00 each
Upper Playfield = $119.00 each
Total = $618.00 each set plus shipping
They have the main playfield in stock. Upper by the end of the year.
My playfield has been holding up reasonably well. I would not do a PF swap in its current state. Way too much effort. But I’m toying with the idea of storing the spare as insurance. I’ve never sold a pin with a spare PF before. Will buyers find value in that? I have no plans to sell it anytime soon. I’m curious what the collective wisdom of the forum thinks…

Quoted from Mattyk:

The value of this game is WAY down. If there isn’t a big time code update the LE is at best a $9,000 game used. I doubt anyone will pay you an extra $600 because you have an extra playfield. That is because 99% of people are not going to swap playfields. I think you are throwing good money after bad, for lack of a better term

He was talking about a CE. I would think it’s much more likely that someone would want to swap a playfield to get a perfect CE when there were only 500 made. Or, the insurance to be able to for just $600.

I had pooling on my CE pretty early on. With Yelobird fix, it has been fairly rock solid since then, maybe a little more in other areas. I would get the playfield insurance on such a high dollar item…

Does anyone have any good images of the ce playfield differences and sparkle?
Trying to get a good look at the differences but can't seem to find anything.

Here are two I just took. One with sparkle and one without.

It’s a little hard to photograph the full sparkle effect, it glimmers in the light.

Quoted from brainmegaphone:

After removing the upper playfield - has anyone had issues with the ball lock posts (at the top of the guitar head) getting stuck? My left one required a lot of moving of the upper playfield to "free up" and now after about 25 games its stuck again. Any trick to getting this dialed back in like it came from the factory? The top playfield doesn't have that much room to play with as far as I can see.

Are the posts fully aligned with the holes in the upper PF? If not then you’d have to disassemble a bit and realign

Quoted from ConstantDrain:

For those with the cliffy scoop guard, do y’all like it? Does it effect play much (ball fires in different direction etc)? Is it really needed it? The factory one is all bent to hell but is cliffy better than just replacing w standard part from JJP?
Also went to work on game today. The L lower flipper would not fall freely. I made an adjustment and now the flipper will not rest at the same angle as the R. It freely moves ba k to resting position but it’s not equal.
Any tips? Thanks!!

Quoted from Kenz:

I know the sound quality on this pin is quite poor as std even with the graphic equaliser. However I’m sure it’s got a lot worse recently. Top end seems missing. It’s almost as if I’ve damaged the sound card. Is this possible ?

Quoted from Vespula:

Funny you say this. I've been struggling with this too. I'm convinced I have a blown mid-range. I also considered the EQ possibility since that's a new part of the beta and went in flattened it. I'm still really having trouble dialing things in especially on the plunge sound. It really distorts my speakers at medium to medium high volume

Quoted from Kenz:

Yep, sounds like muddy junk is exactly what I’m getting. I have a sub attached too.. Definitely my worst sounding pin by a mile!
Phew! least nothing is damaged
Come on JJP roll up these beta’s and release the up-to-date version!

I’m pretty picky when it comes to audio but mine sounds great with the following adjustments. I’m not on beta code and don’t have the EQ.

1) powered sub. But this alone wouldn’t do it.

2) I have this tube EQ inserted in line with the topper. It accepts a 1/8” stereo Jack. I know most don’t have speakers in their topper, and
I can’t remember if the cabinet speakers also have this sort of jack somewhere in the chain, but if they do, I strongly recommend inserting this. It sounds fantastic now.
