Quoted from darkryder:I had a Data East GnR for a short time years ago. What a turd that thing was!
I think maybe you missed the window of appreciation...
I was listening to GnR afd when it came out in the 80s and saw them on that tour, so already a fan... And on top of that If you'd played the de in the 90s in addition to that then you might feel differently.
The de GNR is the game (along with JP which sat next to it in the pub we'd frequent) which got me into pinball, and the catalyst for jumping into the hobby and first time pin ownership of the JJP version when I randomly caught the JJP promo in my phone in 2020.
I played the DE a few times on location in the past few years and while it was fun and nostalgic, the JJP has spoiled me... Calling it a turd is a little harsh but I get it by today's standards.
Quoted from daveyvandy:I can't believe it! They did this in one of the latest beta codes!
What!?
This is awesome. Somebody at JJP was taking notes along the way! I forgot about this! I'm going to go try my patience!
Quick! what else Did we maybe forget or what do we need to tell them about before they close out this coding effort!?
Quoted from daveyvandy:Now I see why my spotlights weren't working lol.
Replaced them with the PU Parts spotlight replacement kit through Mezel Mods and all good now. The replacement plastics look way stronger.
Here's the old destroyed ones.

Wow. New servos too I hope?
Did you have any problems getting them centered?
Quoted from Vespula:Wow. New servos too I hope?
Did you have any problems getting them centered?
Yeah new servos too. Those ESMax ones the everyone recommends.
Super easy to center fortunately. I think I mostly got lucky. The left right pitch on the right spotlight is not quite centered, but I'm not going to let it get to me... Okay maybe it'll eventually get to me.

I found that to be the case with mine too. I think they're both not exactly centered and because they're reversed of each other, one sits up a tooth (the right one I think) and the other sits down one tooth (left I think) and the exact center spot seems to be in between the teeth. It's subtle but I noticed it too. It seems more pronounced on the right one because that one is the up a tooth and shines in your eye a bit. But it's more of authentic concert experience to me.. at least that's what I tell myself.

I bought my Data East GnR from a garage sale for $500 and sold it not long after the novelty wore off. I will say it was an attractive looking game with the nice artwork and those G and R ramps. The sound quality was atrocious and hurt my ears, but that was pinball technology at the time. That was harsh…the game isn’t a turd unless compared to JJP’s GnR! Ha ha. If I recall, the Data East was also a huge wide body pin. I think I’m done buying widebody pins, they take up too much space. On a separate note, I believe one of my spotlights is also acting up. It was only a matter of time…darn it
Man say what you want about JJP GNR, but DE GNR is a masterpiece. It’s GNR in the hey day with the original members minus Adler. It’s Borg, Slash, and Lyman Fkn Sheats code. It’s a wide body to fit more assets. There’s a guitar neck lock, and a band members lock letting you play the game multiple ways. There’s magnets that send the balls into choas. There’s 2 orbits. There’s 2 plungers, One a Gun, One a Rose. There’s a captive ball which plunges it into its own area in the playfield. It has a video mode where you run over people with a Harley (even if it was lifted from Harley Davidson ). There’s mfn “G” & “R” shaped ramps. And there’s not a 6 ball Multiball every single mode, you earn it by getting to Riot the final Wizard. And with a Pinsound, I’ve had the entire GNR catalog long before JJP came out with only 20ish songs. And every time I get snake pit, Slash Godfather solo plays long before showcasing it in Godfather. And all of that for a mere $5-$6K. So bang for the buck, this pin is one of the most underrated pins out there. A turd? Well then my teeth are brown cuz I’m eating that shit up.

5 years ago I went to Greece with a girlfriend( my Michelle, just like your ex-girlfriend thechakapakuni2 but not the same Michelle) and she was making fun of me because that week was the release of "Munsters" Pinball and I missed to try the game… so… Karma came to my rescue, we came down from the Acropolis and she paid that bullying because while walking around we found "Athens Pinball Museum" 124 Pinball machines just for me for "only" three hours straight, I played DE GNR and Bally’s KISS for about 1 hour non-stop.
So Chaka please keep them clean for me, I’ll pick them both soon brother

I put more games on over the weekend, I just gotta say again how happy I am w/ this HerculeEASE kit. It no longer looks like it barely makes it up the right ramp. I’m more frequently shooting the ball right into the guitar neck lock. I was able to sting together multiple loops from the upper right flipper.. didn’t feel mushy during multiball.. it’s great.

FYI Widebody pins from the 90's don't take up any more space than a standard pinball as the backboxes are the same size!
I/O boards are back in stock at Pinball Life if anyone wants one! Better hop to it, can’t imagine they’ll be in stock for long.
The right side lane guide alignment was awful on this NIB LE (first pic). Loosen screws, couldn't move it down any further. Cliffy sells a lane guide that is machined differently (properly?). Installed, and for the win. Perfect alignment now. Capacitors next, I wanted to play it a while to get the OEM feel before making that change. GnR-FlipperReturnLaneGuideOEM@6 (resized).jpg

Are you on beta? There's more fun there than the improved caps. Caps are worth it definitely, no doubt, but they aren't going to meet everyone's expectations depending on where you set them.
You'll be very glad you did it but the combo of mode and song score balancing, and bug fixes, and UI improvements, and mode improvements, and helpful settings additions, and now the caps - definitely made a masterpiece game even better.
Quoted from ChuckRock:What's the better solution? Herculease or IO board?
I would only do the IO board if you have $400 to burn.
HerculEASE is way easier to install and achieves the same thing.
Or if you're cheap like me just replace the capacitors yourself.
Installed the HerculEAZE kit and played the crap out of GnR LE for almost two hours. Flippers are definitely stronger and not turning into wet noodles on long games. I played at least a dozen games and it didn’t miss a beat. Had six ball multiballs going and all four flippers remained strong and snappy. I did turn the flipper coil strength values up a few notches in the coil settings which absolutely helped!
I set a new GC score immediately on this new code and actually completed Shall We Play a Game mode which I’ve never seen before. It was very cool. I also got deep into songs This I Love and Better and Slash Solo is so much better now. The game plays fantastic on this new Beta 46 code and this game is never leaving my collection!
One thing that went wrong is my left spotlight no longer goes up and down, only left and right. I guess the servo burned out? It’s the same result in spotlight test mode. What do I need to order to fix it?

cool code update and I ordered the upgraded board today as well. Still not fan but as stated before the wife loves the game. Not cool to have to spend $400 to fix the horrible week flippers. Certainly hoping this revamps the game.
So I went thru the settings and changed everything to the recommend modified settings that was posted here. When i do the code update does it go back to factory. Should I go back to factory for the new update? Thank you in advance.

Quoted from allsportdvd:Can anyone ship a Herculeaze kit to Australia?
Not direct. You would have to send it to a shipper (shipito) first, and then to Australia. I am fairly keen for one too.
Enjoying the new update, though I did get a crash/reboot early on. It was right around the time I earned a jackpot for Throw the Lights, I think. Is there any way for someone who's not a part of the beta to report an issue like that? Or since my machine is connected to the internet, will it auto-send the error log?

Official code update… It’s about time!!!
Ordered the new board this morning so perfect timing (on my part)
I got rid of most of my pinball machines in the last year, or so, except my two Williams pins and GNR. I already love GNR as it is and I never really felt like my flippers were not strong enough. I have always been able to backhand the left ramp all the way to the guitar neck with left flipper. But, I hope the IO board makes a big difference during multiballs. That’s where I feel like the flippers could use a little more juice. I’ve played EJ and Godfather so I know the flippers are stronger with the IO board so I can’t wait to see how it improves on my machine. As far as the new code goes, I’m hoping it makes the overall gameplay and scoring better. I never liked the low scoring since day one but that didn’t change the fact that this pin is amazing.
Thanks JJP!
Now make another great music pin and don’t charge over $10k for it!!!
Quoted from hiker2099:So does this let you adjust multiball settings?
You have always had the ability to adjust the game settings to reduce multiball occurrence... It's well documented in spreadsheet format from Chaka posted on this site.
Quoted from MikeS:I'm pretty sure beta 46 is the same thing as 3.0. It's not prompting me to update. I'll probably stay in the beta tract in case future updates and bug fixes come out.
Right. Just leave beta enabled. No point.
Quoted from replacement:When i do the code update does it go back to factory. Should I go back to factory for the new update?
Not normally. I've never had that happen.
You should play it how you like.
I would consider reset all your scores however... They are completely irrelevant now. But it probably doesn't matter to some people either way.
Awesome upgrade. If you're on the fence and can solder, just do it.

Quoted from replacement:cool code update and I ordered the upgraded board today as well. Still not fan but as stated before the wife loves the game. Not cool to have to spend $400 to fix the horrible week flippers. Certainly hoping this revamps the game.

Are these the settings you are referring to?
Quoted from Eskaybee:Happy weekend Gunners! You want balance? We’ve had it all along. Huge shout out and thanks to MikeS for working together with this.
You want big album mode scores, we got it. You want minimized multiballs, we got it! GNR settings are mostly set to extra easy, So let the settings tuning begin! - feel free to provide feedback or input as not all of this is 100% accurate.
• album mode scoring - change adjustment “time needed to qualify album”: default is 180 secs. Change to 30 secs.
What’s this do? This will substantially increase your album mode score level. I just played a live and let die encore followed by a partial November rain and cashed out. My desert demolition mode level was 71 and I didn’t have all 4 album patches (just the UYI1)
• booster multiball difficulty: increase lights, crowd, and pyro difficulty +1.
What’s this do? Reduces the amount of multiballs, especially the sporadic rando ones. This will increase difficulty of the game, especially pyro and crowd multiball.
• max ball song saver: default is 60. Recommend lowering to 30.
• Applause time: default is 15. Recommend increasing to 30.
What’s this do? This makes up for substantially reducing the max ball saver. This will light applause jackpot sooner cutting down ball times and giving better chances of hitting it to move on.
• GNR mystery spellout: default is 8. Recommend changing to 10 to reduce random mystery songs.
• super lockout timer: default is 15. Recommend increasing to 20-25
What’s this do? Increases the timer of how long balls stay locked in the powerchord before releasing. This will allow for more planting of balls reducing the amount of multiball chaos in front of flippers. Tip: new locked balls or hitting the Duff scoop will reset the timer.
• Individual songs difficulty: there’s a difficulty setting for each song, well most - night train shows up twice (bug?) and one or two aren’t there. These are default to 1, extra easy, out of about 8 (hardest).
Recommendation: i found the sweet spot to be between 2-4 - with most at 2. I’ve played with all sorts of settings and I did increase the higher scoring songs (estranged mainly) to 7 or 8.
What’s this do? It effects multiple aspects. One; it increases the # of shots to light the green scoop and move to the next wave. As such, this decreases your shot values because you’ll be leveling up the song slower so you’re final song jackpot will be lower. At difficulty 2-3 it won’t affect it too much. It’s at the higher 4+ difficulty that it really affects the jackpot values.
Additionally, this will reduce multiball chaos as you won’t be adding balls as often. I’ve tried the difficulty near max and found that it significantly slows the game down too much and found just a small bump in difficulty gave a good balance of scoring and challenge while keeping it fun.
Enjoy mofo’s!
Sorry to rehash an old issue. But are these the settings that most are using?
Thanks!
Richard

I glued the printed base to the PC board. As printed, the base snaps onto the cap tightly, no glue needed there.

After today’s update, I think things will be changing. I factory reset most my settings to the new code except I kept the booster multiballs harder to start.
I played 2 quick games of the new code. Those 2 games got me really excited to play GNR again and really try out the new code.
