I think it's actually closer to the middle. Some of them just swapping employment to employers not large enough to be impacted by the rules. I know some who have left their jobs rather than do it. Not necessarily the laid off variety, but seeing the writing on the wall and getting out.

That's overlooking the fact it has no similarities to other pre-existing coronavirus illnesses. SARS-CoV-1 and MERS. Those luckily didn't escalate to pandemic levels but I recall as a teen the media hyping SARS like it was going to spread like crazy and kill you. It luckily didn't, but this was back in 2003. Covid-19 aka SARS-CoV-2 is 70% genetically similar ( https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32744716/ ) So we got lucky and should be damn thankful we've encountered this and have been studying it to some capacity before now, because yeah, realistically it could have been many more years.
