People that smoke and vape will have more of an issue if contracting it. Pollution levels also contribute.

They/he should. Not enough tests, swabs, masks, ventilators or protective gear. They told medical staff to use bandannas and scarfs if need be. The US is already behind the 8 ball on this thing.

Quoted from RWH:

They need to enact it now.

Second that in Maryland. I drive by my Giant on the way to work and its packed even at 7AM. People are panic buying all the Cleaners, TP and over the counter meds, feminine products blah blah.

Most of the area works in the DoD so telework is impossible. Were working 50/50 where half the work force works a week then is off. Some companies can work more that 8 hours to make up some of the time others cant. If you weren't worried about contracting the virus your worried about paying the mortgage and bills with only half a paycheck. We are lucky though. Some people are just getting laid off.

Quoted from SantaEatsCheese:

I am writing you this from Maryland. I realize it has not hit everywhere yet, but it likely will. Even the federal government is starting to shut down over this. I work in an area where telework is not/will not ever be practical. Even so, the government sent home all employees that meet any of the following conditions on paid leave… until June:
Over 60
Pregnant
Compromised Immuse System
Diabetes
Hypertension
Cancer
Chronic Respiratory Disease
Cardiovascular Disease
I would strongly suggest that if you meet any of these conditions you stay home until this blows over. Even if you don’t meet these conditions, it is a good idea to cut down on human contact as much as you can.
Everyone left is working every other week with half the shift on each week so if a shift is wiped out, work can continue. Contractors can work out of alternate approved spaces.
Supply chain issues are popping up all over the place. I went into the gas station on the way to work to buy a cup of coffee this morning but couldn’t buy it… because there were no cups. The grocery store here hasn’t had TP or hand sanitizer in a week. There is plenty of food, but no chicken, and what is there is about 1/3 gone. Not just canned goods but pretty much any random item. There are only 100 cases in Maryland right now.

I think the biggest fear is to have it bloom all at once which will overload the system. Kind of a power surge that pops a breaker. The thing is just trying to get everyone on board with just laying low for a while.

Ok, confirmed. So not panicking over 2 strains. If that’s increases significantly then I’ll change my opinion

People are angry and anger drives opinion.
Those who have been paying attention for weeks are still furious this was allowed to happen.
People who are just getting the point now are newly angry and looking for someone to blame besides those who refused to prepare us properly for this and told us for months this was not a big deal and everybody should stop whining about it.

Quoted from SantaEatsCheese:

I am a government contractor augmenting government work/projects. I work in an office setting, but in my industry there is not and never will be any telework.

Same here near BWI. I wish we could telework but its impossible. I feel fortunate that I can work but having to actually sit in the spaces here makes me feel exposed. I sit on a corner where people walk by constantly. On a side note - they have air quality tests all the time and mitigated "bat sh!t" issue on the 7th floor a few years ago.

The fear of contracting COVID will continue until they come up with a vaccine. There's no way around it really. So far, all the projections and graphs have been spot on.

#5271 4 years ago

This is funny but not. A guy in Maryland had a bonfire with 60 people and wouldn't break it up even after the cops told him to. The Governor publicly called this d!ck out on Twitter posting his photo. What a turd. Irresponsible people like this should be called out.

Its such a weird virus with how symptoms present from person to person. Some people it kills within days and others have varying degrees of symptoms.

Quoted from Daditude:

I had my identity stolen a few years ago. They stole my tax return and opened some credit cards...who knows what else?
I have been desperately trying to get unemployment, but all the offices are closed, they don't answer ANY calls (despite me trying hundreds of times...yes...hundreds), and I can't get through online because it says my SS # has already been used.
I'm hoping it is just a web glitch, but it could be scammers again.
My wife and I both lost our jobs, and we have 3 kids and a mortgage. We desperately need to get unemployment.

Man, that is tough going and sound like a complex problem to navigate. Hang in there!

That reminds me, I need to freeze my credit.

#5647 4 years ago

Hopefully relief checks and tax returns helps everyone that qualifies or getting a return. Additionally, small businesses qualify for the CARES act recently passed.

Where I work as a contractor our hours have basically been cub in half - one week on, one week off. Our company may use the money from the CARES act to pay our salaries.

Quoted from wolfemaaan:

Pretty much Covid is doing what nature does. Seems like vast majority of healthy people are not affected and the people with underlying conditions and old age are. That’s Darwin’s theory of evolution
The only thing so far solving this issue is the uncredited human immune system.

Why is everything "how old you are" or "age" related with you? That assumption has been proven untrue at this point. The maturity level of your posts are ponderous as to why you would even say such things unless its a poor attempt at trying to be funny or outrageous.

I think we work for the same people
We have internet, movies and of course the basement arcade to keep busy. There's always a project in the arcade. I'm troubleshooting a monitor issue with my Tempest. Anyone who owns a game with a WG6100 color vector monitor knows the PITA they can be. Lots to do at home plus trying to work out.

When I hear or see stories about people gathering in large crowds now its cringeworthy. I know its hard to fathom when no one they know is sick but this is the really happening. I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of people that wished they would have been more cautious in hindsight before this is all over.

I suspect everyones gonna freak out again and raid the stores and hoard now that the stay at home has just been announced for Florida.

Quoted from Reality_Studio:

It's not 50/50, it also seems to depend on general health. For example people are being hit by this harder in the south:
https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2020/04/coronavirus-unique-threat-south-young-people/609241/
I attached a few sample pics to show how general health is worse with people in the south, so they will be more vulnerable. It's part of the reason many are puzzled why the south hasn't been more aggressive with lock downs.[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Quoted from sunnRAT:

Damn. Straight up BBQ-heavy states.
I used to live in Hoover, AL as a teenager, just outside of Birmigham. Let's just say you didnt have to drive very far to find a BBQ joint. And all of them were good in their own way.
Obviously, years of eating that on a routine basis will take a toll on your health.

Quoted from Azmodeus:

I have watched manufacturing exit America, for the most part.
Our dependence upon chinas manufacturing has landed us here. IMO
We have our own problems, but China. Freedom of speech for example. It is symbolic only- in China. I wish Chinese people the best in life but I must push for American manufacturing. Now. Money where my mouth is.
This cannot happen again. IMO.

I mentioned this before but something like 80% of all our pharmaceuticals are made in China. I'd start with this.

It’s interesting to see that there are still some not following recommendations and taking warnings with a grain of salt. There’s still a lot of 2020 left and to my knowledge there isn’t a vaccine yet. To say that the number of deaths have a way to go is just ignorant , callous and sad.

#7316 4 years ago
Quoted from iceman44:

Yes. When does it end? When you say it’s over? And no I don’t have a mask or toilet paper because I didn’t hoard from the people that actually need it. There will be sacrifices made.

I mean, this has been said a billion times already but...It ends when we have a vaccine. We limit the speed of the spread by staying inside and showing restraint and self control. Right, now you may have or have not be infected. Maybe you’ll infect others and family while feeling fine for up to 2 weeks. There’s just to many unknowns.

#7336 4 years ago
Quoted from iceman44:That’s not true. A vaccine will be great, along with the therapeutics and other drugs that are currently helpful in treating the virus.
We still have to live life, have an economy to go back to, in no way shape or form can the economy wait to restart until a vaccine is approved next year
All these people say “I don’t know when”. The “when” part is coming very soon as the medical system gets built up to handle the cases like NYC
The economy will restart soon, like it or not. 30 days, 45 days whatever. It’s coming in that timeframe. China is back to work almost 100%
Or they will be nothing left to pay for anything

I think you missed my point but that’s not surprising. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you and leave it at that.

Quoted from woody76:

even on the worst corona virus death day, it still does come close to these things that will never shut the economy down. May 1st is coming soon boys, time to put your big boy pants on.
1 day totals
26,283 people died of Cancer
24,641 died of Heart Disease
4,300 people died of Diabetes
Suicide took 3024 lives - and this rate will rise daily as the economic downslide furthers
Moreover, Mosquitoes kill 2,740 people every day and Snakes kill 137 people every day.

None of what you list is a contagious virus like Covid19. You don’t get cancer, heat disease or depression from sneezing on someone or touching your face. Yes, deadly but not the same. There still is no therapudic or vaccine so the numbers of deaths will continue to climb until then - most likely a year and a half IF we are lucky.

April 30th is my end date. May 1st I will break quarantine and go visit my Mom and Dad. I fully understand the science behind mitigation measures, but I'm recognizing I have limits. Quoted from Luckydogg420:

For the poor people in China that rely on the wet markets for daily food, what alternatives could the Chinese Government provide for them? It would be like our farmers market being closed down. They need to change their culture not just close a market.

Quoted from Blitzburgh99:

Poor people in other parts of the world don’t feast on dogs and bats

The wet markets are bad but the US factory farming is just as despicable, gross and abusive. Most if not all infectious diseases start from zoological origins and jump to humans. Anthrax, aids, bird-flu, swine-flu, mad-cow, SARS, MERS, Covid-19 etc. If you've seen any factory farming...its not for the faint of heart. Its worse than any horror you can imagine. High density feed lots, and processing plants. You probably wont see a lot of open reporting because they have "ad-gag" laws that make it a crime to report a crime. If people are worried that their mail might have Corona but 80% of pigs have pneumonia when they are slaughtered. So they don't die before they die, we inject them with anti-biotics which of coarse get passed to people, leading to anti-biotic resistant diseases, leading to us dying from ever evolving diseases.

We are on the cusp to returning to a pre ant-biotic era where strep throat was a death sentence. If we (world) keep producing food the way we do, we are going to get sick with something medicine cant fix.

Daditude - Sorry to hear about your great-uncle man. My Father similarly living in an assisted living facility and worry constantly about him and others there.

#12579 3 years ago
Quoted from albummydavis:

It’s hard to explain to someone who has not been to one of these markets, but you can not fathom how bad these markets are. You may have seen them on tv, but even then they are incredibly white-washed. As bad as factory farming is, it so much worse in these markets. Cages of stacked animals, sick from capture and transport, stacked on top of each other with puke, shit, and piss dripping onto each other. Live Sea turtles on blocks of ice, having their bodies cut in pieces to order over the span of a day. These places are beyond sadistic and unhygienic.

That's pretty horrible to hear. I knew they were bad...real bad. I just didn't want to hear/read/see it as an animal person. People may be animal people but they should choose more wisely in what and how much they eat. This virus is pretty deadly and going to be costly in more ways than one. The next virus/pandemic may do us all in if we don't wise up quick.

Quoted from gweempose:

Precisely. The theory is that if everyone wears a mask when in public, the people who are contagious won't as easily spread it to others. I think this logic is sound.

Think of a mask as a spaghetti strainer. Now picture 2 spaghetti strainers in between someone with the virus and you. Its not full proof as maybe a noodle gets loose but maybe your strainer will block it.

Now imaging a piñata filled with Pizza sauce on a train going 120 mph...

Quoted from RTR:

Is it ok to be against both inhumane factory farming and wet markets or do you have to choose a team?

I’m guessing this question is with sarcasm because I thought it was fairly well stated.

#12653 3 years ago
Quoted from RTR:

It was well stated and my question was more rhetorical than sarcastic. Some are hyper-critical of one situation, but willfully blind to the other. Seems a consistent view would be to be concerned about both since they pose similar risks.
And your post stated that you were concerned about both, I didn't mean to insinuate otherwise.

Sorry, I misunderstood you. I'm critical of both I guess although the wet markets (China and yes - US) seem to be a lot worse from what I've been hearing. BOTH (Wet and Animal Processing plants) are pretty f'en barbaric. My wife and I still eat chicken and fish so we are not beyond reproach on the whole subject. Basically, what I'm trying to say I'm not a nutty, hyper vigilant or too judgy' however its something to think about. The newer plant based meat substitutes are much much better as of late so we are making meals using those more. My pallet is a bit wider though having traveled to 30 plus countries in my early years so I'm more open to trying foods than most. People are always going to want to eat meat but at what cost to the environment and our health? Most people are oblivious to even stop to consider the impacts.

The forward to Michael Crichtons, "The Lost World" always stuck with me after reading his book. The premise was how "behavior" could have been the demise of some dinosaurs. He goes on to talk about the behavior of humans might make "Us" extinct as well. His books are pretty deep considering they are fiction based from science. All bad ass and highly recommended but Jurassic Park, The Lost World and Sphere were incredible.

----- “Human beings are so destructive. I sometimes think we're a kind of plague, that will scrub the earth clean. We destroy things so well that I sometimes think, maybe that's our function. Maybe every few eons, some animal comes along that kills off the rest of the world, clears the decks, and lets evolution proceed to its next phase.”

----- “Other animals fight for territory or food; but, uniquely in the animal kingdom, human beings fight for their ‘beliefs.’ The reason is that beliefs guide behavior, which has evolutionary importance among human beings. But at a time when our behavior may well lead us to extinction, I see no reason to assume we have any awareness at all. We are stubborn, self-destructive conformists. Any other view of our species is just a self-congratulatory delusion.”

another great quote...

-----“What makes you think human beings are sentient and aware? There’s no evidence for it. Human beings never think for themselves, they find it too uncomfortable. For the most part, members of our species simply repeat what they are told—and become upset if they are exposed to any different view.”

Quoted from cottonm4:

I feel sorry for the meat packing employees.

The Prez. used the Defense Production Act to order the meat packers to stay open only because the meat packer bosses lobbied for him to use the act.
Seems all of the towns the packers are located in want/wanted the packers to shut down because they are cesspools for spreading the virus. So, the packers wanted govt. help to override what the locals officials wanted. And also to get some sort of shield for liabilities.
Whether the worker bees get good PPE and get to work in a safe environment seems to be way down on the list of things to do.
I can understand the packers desperation. If the packers shut down, the farmers and ranchers will have to start culling their herds of cattle and hogs. It will take a long time to recover if farmers get shut down.
The packers big concern: Will the employees come back to work without some safety guarantees?
Anyway, the first 18 minutes is informative.

Hehh...you said meat packing.

Regardless, the good news is places like Georgia, who opened weeks ago, continues to see their numbers in decline in spite of opening.

Georgia is spiking since reopening.

"Georgia started the process of reopening its economy on April 24, something Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms was firmly against. The mayor warned of more covid-19 deaths if the state opened back up too soon. It seems she was right.

On the same day that Gov. Brian Kemp lifted Georgia’s stay-at-home order for most residents, Georgia confirmed that its covid-19 death toll increased by 1,400 within 24 hours, according to figures posted by the Georgia Department of Health, Savannah Now reported.
Georgia’s total number of cases has increased to nearly 33,500, according to Worldometer."

What? 1,400 deaths in 24 hours? When? Not even New York had those kind of numbers. Georgia has 1,441 total deaths since this whole thing started according to worldometers and you are saying 1,400 of them took place on a single day and the other 41 the other two months???
You clearly have misread the data somewhere or there was a misprint. Their daily deaths have been about the same or on the decline since they opened. Yesterday Georgia had 4 new deaths. On average they have had about 50 daily deaths going back to before they opened as I have been following Georgia since they first started talking about being the first state to ease restrictions. This info you provided is a perfect example of the kind of misinformation that is everywhere and that people latch on to.

That was a direct copy and paste from just one source. Not in 24 hours but since reopening. It was in the news today in several places and again on NBC news round up tonight - Up 60% since opening up. Maybe I’m wrong or they are wrong and everything is alright in Georgia.

Quoted from wrb1977:

habo...you provided completely false information when you said Georgia’s death toll increased by 1,400 within 24 hours of reopening. So within 24 hours of reopening, 1,400 people got infected and the virus spread so fast within their bodies that they died on the very same day?! Wow...this is some virus. I suggest you use some common sense when reading information before quoting a bunch of nonsense. That is what I was correcting and also why I gave my first downvote since this thread went into post approval mode. You were not offering an opinion I disagreed with, but recklessly quoting completely false information.
Also, there is way too much negativity, doom and gloom, and pessimism in this thread. It’s not the reality and is not healthy for anyone, including myself. As soon as anyone provides some positive news or a glimmer of hope, many immediately try to discredit or contradict the information, explain why the info is bs, and almost seem to go out of their way to disprove any good news. It’s almost as if some of you don’t want things to improve “too soon” for reasons that are not allowed to be discussed. Well things are improving and I’m going to continue to be optimistic that the worst is behind us and enjoy my life as tomorrow is never guaranteed no matter what the situation. Allegheny County, where Pittsburgh is located, is moving to the “yellow phase” along with many other counties in PA this Friday and it’s about damn time! I hope those of you that think the sky is falling can at least find some happiness in your lives by playing some pball.

I think you may have misread or misinterpreted the post. If you read what was stated - Georgia reopened April 24 (NOT within the past 24 HOURS) and since then there have been 1400 or so deaths. That is what the article said which is what I thought to share.

Quoted from wrb1977:

Also, there is way too much negativity, doom and gloom, and pessimism in this thread.

Sorry to burst anyone's fantasy but things are not going all that great. What is happening in the US is not the positive puppy dogs and ice cream as some may think. Everyone has a long way to go before there is vaccine. The US has NO plan going forward except to open up and let people die that are going to die. That's not a plan and we knew this was coming in January. Without testing (which not everyone cant get no matter what they say) you cant open up blindly when the guy next to you in the office may be infected. So, I wasn't trying to offend you by posting something contradictory but to possibly discuss. Instead I was downvoted and dismissed.

#13683 3 years ago
Quoted from poppapin:

The whole purpose of the lockdown in the beginning was to flatten the curve, correct? Well a lot of states have a downtrend and are allowed to open with restrictions. I don't think there is anything wrong with this. We cannot remain shutdown until there is a vaccine!! My .02

I agree with you completely. We cant shut down forever. Its destroying the economy. We need to have the ability to test everyone going back to work to see if they have the virus or have antibodies first. This is not happening. Starting back up with ZERO plan is only going to delay that curve. A good plan - which is what the CDC and virologist have been stating since the beginning would be to have extensive testing and tracking to know who is ill or have been in contact with. Without it its like having Stevie Wonder take a 747 out for a test ride.

Fauci and the others are the experts and the biggest brains in the field. Quoted from Who-Dey:

Here is what people fail to understand. I am not saying that this is nothing or fake etc. I am saying that it has been overblown by the media and I believe it has been overblown for political reasons.
This virus is real and I don't dispute that and it can be deadly and I dont dispute that either but looking back on it all we shouldn't have shut the country down and crushed our economy. It's the pandemic that never happened basically.
Also as far as people talking about how many people are dying, well it's been proven that they are putting covid 19 on death certificates when it's not true so who knows what the numbers really are? All I know is that I dont see anyone that I know sick or dying. My gf has a friend that died from it but other than that we dont know one person that's had it except possibly me back before they were talking about all of this. I think that I had it, I really do.
I just dont believe that we are in grave danger here. This isn't the Bubonic Plague or the Spanish flu like they are leading you to believe. The real truth is a very very small percentage of people are dying from this.

How is the media overblowing 100,000 deaths How should they be covering this then? What else do you know of that has killed this many people so quickly in such a short period of time? Just because it hasn’t affected anyone you know (yet) doesnt take away the fact it’s happening. It’s pretty ignorant and close minded thinking.

Quoted from Gott1978:

Latest information on mask wearing from the American Medical Association:
“Face masks should be used only by individuals who have symptoms of respiratory infection such as coughing, sneezing, or, in some cases, fever. Face masks should also be worn by healthcare workers, by individuals who are taking care of or are in close contact with people who have respiratory infections, or otherwise as directed by a doctor. Face masks should not be worn by healthy individuals to protect themselves from acquiring respiratory infection because there is no evidence to suggest that face masks worn by healthy individuals are effective in preventing people from becoming ill. Face masks should be reserved for those who need them because masks can be in short supply during periods of widespread respiratory infection. Because N95 respirators require special fit testing, they are not recommended for use by the general public.” (Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA); April 21, 2020 Volume 323, Number 15 https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2762694)

This guidance was posted early March prior to the proverbial "sh!t" hitting the fan. CDC revised and encouraged mask guidance later at the beginning of April. They were concerned that a large part of the population was asymptomatic and could spread the virus. The latest on effectiveness.

"We now have really clear evidence that wearing masks works -- it's probably a 50% protection against transmission,"
https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/27/health/us-coronavirus-wednesday/index.html

I personally don't think wearing/not wearing a mask is a political statement or anything but to ones measure of "risk" and the mitigation there of. In Maryland, you wear a mask going to a business or to work (at least my work). Its sort of an odd reaction to see people get so nuts over having to wear one. I just don’t get the people that refuse to wear a mask on principle. It’s a little piece of cloth that you wear for 15 minutes while you’re in the store. What’s the big deal?
I’d ask those people the following questions:
Do you wear clothes? Clothes are there to protect you from the sun and the elements. It also hides your naughty bits but really the core reason to wear clothes is to avoid exposure. It’s keeping you safer.
Do you wear a seatbelt? Seatbelt laws are in place to protect you in the case of an accident. It keeps you safer.
Do you follow traffic laws? Those are in place to keep you and those around you safer.
If the above things are not an affront to your constitutional rights then wearing a mask shouldn’t be either. They all keep you and those around you safer.

Everything has taken a back seat to George Floyd. With protests the past 2 weeks we'll most likely see more cases in a week or 2. This isn't even considering most states are opening back up. To date, the US still has NO coordinated plan on how to handle the virus. Its been left up to individual states to figure out how to address PPE, testing, testing supplies, tracking the infected, etc.. 2,000,000 infected with 114,000 deaths and counting. 17,000 new cases and 960 deaths reported yesterday. This is only after 3 months. The warmer weather may or may not have slowed the virus down but "winter is coming". As far as treatments...we have limited quantities of Remdesivir which run out at the end of the month. There's a bunch of random information like Vitamin D and Famotidine, sold under the brand name Pepcid could ease symptoms but nothing definite. Surprisingly or not surprisingly the CDC and has reported an increase of people (as high as 1 in 3) misusing cleaning products, including washing food with bleach, using the products on bare skin, and inhaling, gargling and ingesting them in effort to kill coronavirus. Not to mention Hydroxychloroquine which has no effect on the virus and can increase your chances of mortality...ugh. There is slightly positive news that some people unemployed due to the virus are being rehired back but unemployment is still sky high. It feels like people are becoming complacent and laxed with social distancing and wearing face coverings - some even being combative about wearing masks in stores or in public. Conspiracy theories continue including the virus is fake blah blah…

Fauci stated he has never seen a virus infecting the world in less than a month. We need to get serious or we are going to be screwed - nothing has changed.

If someone told me this would be the future 6 months ago I would have thought they were bat-sh!t crazy. Sorry, don't say bat-sh!t. 2020 is the year of wtf's.

Or if proof comes out it was intentionally released?
Not trying to start anything, just curious. After everything else occurring this year thats about all thats left.

No. Covid19 wasn't manipulated or developed in a Chinese lab and intentionally released. Its another conspiracy theory that is trying to place blame and/or divert our attention elsewhere. China could have possibly sounded the alarm sooner that there was a problem. Remember though that we had an agency called USAID/ "Predict" that was monitoring the globe for pandemics but it was disbanded in September 2019 only 3 months before the sh@t hit the fan. They were literally IN China monitoring things.

A vaccine will be stellar when one is developed maybe in a year. Even if we had a vaccine some wouldn't take it because of government tracking nanobots or lack of trusting doctors and scientists. My immune systems healthier than a mule ma' or whatever...

The BIG 2 - Social Distance/6-ft in crowds and Face Coverings/Masks. If everyone wore a mask in the US for 3 weeks we would have most likely gotten rid of it. Unfortunately, without a "top down" coordinated effort we are going have inconsistency among the states in the US. I've mentioned this already but the US has NO plan for the virus as of yet - nothing.

Were opening up everything and people are already way to laxed like things have changed. Nothing has changed and it looks like the virus is ramping up for the summer. Spiking - no - the first wave is still happening. I hear some of my office mates talking about going out for a sit down meal instead of carry out. I'm thinking, go ahead and have some Covid Soup as the air-conditioning is recirculated around you.

This thing is only temporary. Living in the age of technology and burying our faces on our phones has made use really impatient. Its made some people have the attention span of a goldfish.

I made a post siting the author Michael Crichton on "behavior" vs extinction and I'll post it again because there's some important messages in there...

-----“What makes you think human beings are sentient and aware? There’s no evidence for it. Human beings never think for themselves, they find it too uncomfortable. For the most part, members of our species simply repeat what they are told—and become upset if they are exposed to any different view.”

#FILLETOFISH

Its pretty obvious that New Yorkers did things the right way. They did a great job and hats off especially since they were one of the epicenters. CT, NJ and NY are now asking people traveling in from some states to quarantine for 14 days. Another good decision IMO. Florida closed late and opened early even admonishing other states for staying closed. They're doubling down on not to implement wearing masks in public even after the surgeon general there recommended it and now they are having some of the highest's infection rates of the country.

Wearing a mask “is extremely low-cost, and, for the individual, provides a 33% and as high 50% reduction in the risk of transmission,” he said in a video press release. “But at the community level, can save an extraordinary number of lives.”

#15934 3 years ago

Latest greatest from 2 hours ago. Theres been a 54% spike in new cases over 14 days. The good: Deaths are down most likely because Doctors have a few tools in treating the most severe cases. Remdesivir and Dexamethasone seem to be working as well as laying patients on their stomach increases how much oxygen is getting to their lungs. We also know now that there is a preventative measure that reduces ones exposure to the virus up to 5 times - Masks. Also, the first Coronavirus task force is meeting today for the first time in 2 months there's that.

Yes, but very derivative thinking by taking it at face value and sounds like a conservative news talking point than anything. This has been debunked over and over and over.

What it means that Covid19 is SPREADING. If there are more people testing positive over a certain amount of time... say yesterday, that means the RATE of infection increases. If we test more and the RATE of infection decreases over time it’s NOT spreading. See how that works?

It’s not doom and gloom it’s FACTs and interpreting the data correctly. The reality is that you can’t deny this thing away or think it’s BS or a hoax. This kind of thinking is what has gotten us to the point where we’re at. Break free of it.

Quoted from phil-lee:

There is no cure for this. Why lose your wealth for the luxury of dying in a Hospital? I can take the 3000 dollar drug at home. I can use a sleep apnea mask to get a little more oxygen.
The death rate is dropping. That is all anyone cares about is the death rate which is minuscule compared to past Pandemics.
The rest is hype pushed by the media. Cases? Means nothing. More testing? Why, so they can enter you in a file and invade your privacy? I can pass a test this morning and be exposed leaving the test Facility. Testing is worthless. There are obviously millions walking around positive, so what? They are asymptomatic. Testing is merely revealing more asymptomatic people and feeding frenzied headlines.
People cheer when a former denier tests positive, Media breathlessly reveals these "Cases" to point an accusing finger and humiliate. What about the thousands who don't have it, were exposed and suffered no ill effects, or those who compared it to a bad cold? You rarely hear about them.
Fauci is back doomsdaying, didn't he admit lying to us about masks a few weeks back? Why should he be relevant or believed now.
I will make a bold prediction. All of this will end in December. Miraculously go away. A lot of people are saying the same thing.
Until then tell me what good testing is? You and I will get it sooner or later. We are past hiding from it. They love to criticize Sweden because they didn't follow the scam narrative. What difference did it make? People needlessly died? Horse hockey.
Keep from overloading Hospitals? That crap flew out the window a Month ago with accurate, certified reports of empty Hospitals waiting for patients that never showed. Canceling surgeries that were necessary for what?
Over..

The numbers show the US is response to the pandemic has been the worst in the world. We broke single-day records for new cases at least 9 times in this month. The White House wants all reporting to go directly to them instead of the CDC. Now they are trying to eliminate billions from a relief proposal and from testing...yes, testing.

Denying or downplaying it’s happening, embracing conspiracy theories, criticizing the experts while playing golf has not worked at this point. It’s time to flip the dip switch from “Read-ONLY” to “WRITE” and start learn like other countries have done months ago.

Quoted from phil-lee:

In order for masks to be effective everyone should wear a N-95 or higher rated 3M mask.
These homemade rag masks do little. In theory they stop frontal blasts from sneezing and coughing.
Unfortunately the air pressure blows out the sides, top and bottom. They do not even pretend to filter out 1-3 micron viruses (the N-95 barely meets this requirement.
So yes with a rag on your face or a loosely-fitting ear strung mask you stop frontal assaults of aerosolized sputum, instead blasting it out from the sides.
I know nobody wants this mess, I don't either. Lets get real, are we just jumping through hoops to meet bogus requirements or are we trying to avoid an infection?
From what I understand the survival rate from covid is 99.2 %. Correct me if I am wrong.

At $15 plus a pop for an N95 mask, not everyone is able to afford that which is why they suggest face coverings of some kind. A cotton mask that's made from an old t-shirt and doubled up has an effectiveness of 70%'ish compared to 95% (N95). They do better than "little". When every one is wearing something it increases the percentage a bit. Throw in the 6-ft social distancing and you know the rest. Its a simple and basically free especially when 40% of people that have COVID are asymptomatic.

Long term effects are still potentially life changing as they are finding out it pretty much affects your entire body. Months after recovery people are still having issues breathing, rapid heart rate, fatigue and mental "fogginess". You still don't want to get it or spread it.

#17063 3 years ago

I guess the negative response to wearing masks isn't a new thing. This is newspaper clip circa 1918 during the pandemic that seems to push mask wearing as unhealthy.

Quoted from phil-lee:

A box of N-95 3M masks cost 16 dollars.
I would like to see the scientific study of the 70% effective rate of a doubled t-shirt. Sounds like Horsesh%t.
These cheap thin blue "Surgical masks" are garbage too. The aerosolized breath just blasts out in a 360 degree pattern away from the mouth and nose. Then potentially infected air is breathed through the same leaks.
We might as well admit we are just jumping through regulatory hoops, going through the motions to appear to be doing the right thing. These home made rags are not a serious tool for fighting virus transmission.
A condom with a 30-70% effective rate is rejected as defective. The comfort from seeing one put on is illusory.

Where are you getting your masks? Many reputable locations are still in low supply and/or unavailable. 3M requires a bulk order. The best price I can find is around $15 at Office Depot. Home Depot is sold out but run $15 https://www.homedepot.com/b/Safety-Equipment-Respirator-Masks/N95/N-5yc1vZc25kZ1z195hh

I think your talking about the concept of risk reduction rather than absolute prevention. You don’t throw up your hands if you think a mask is not 100 percent effective. That’s silly. Nobody’s taking a cholesterol medicine because they’re going to prevent a heart attack 100 percent of the time, but you’re reducing your risk substantially.

How have other countries stemmed the spread then? For one they had a national plan. Secondly, their populous didn't constantly scrutinize their experts and resist wearing a face covering as much as Americans.

Quoted from Utesichiban:

I have been a believer that a vaccine (either this one, Moderna's Pfizers, or J & J's) will work and be ready as soon as November/December or Q1 2021. These will likely require boosters annually like the flu shots but I think they are closer than many realize.
This is why I dislike the "we're all going to get this so lets get out there and get it over with " herd immunity commentary & advocacy so much. That just strikes me as excuses to flaunt recommended precautions while ignoring science and rapid developments on the vaccine and treatment fronts.
https://www.cnbc.com/2020/07/20/oxford-universitys-coronavirus-vaccine-shows-positive-immune-response-in-an-early-trial.html

The vaccines sound promising especially the T-Cell one. The heard immunity theory is showing not to be true with Covid19 since its being discovered that antibodies that develop in the systems of COVID-19 survivors may not be the long term protection from the virus that some hoped it would be. For example Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro tests positive for COVID-19 a 3rd time.

I bet that most people that get NuTTy regarding the ingredients of a vaccine don't even bother to read the ingredients in even 1/2 the food they ingest. Do you know how much garbage is in a can of diet soda let alone a soda? When was the last time you heard someone get Polio, Tetanus, Rubella, Hib, Pertussis, Rotavirus, Diphtheria, Mumps and Measles? Measles unfortunately made a come back with people not vaccinating. Sign me up for a every vaccine out there because I don't want to get a Victorian era disease.

As far as the COVID19 vaccine is concerned...I will get it and deal with the "soreness at the injection site" or "mild fever" which is what they are saying has been initially reported.

I hope not, but thats what the messed up brain is thinking.....

Your brain is fine We all know Schools are petri dishes. It will only be a matter of time before school districts that open will have to close. Kids get sick as easily as adults with Covid19. Its a logistical nightmare with busing, classroom, and lunchroom sizes while staying apart. Its pretty disruptive to send blocks or a whole school home after a teacher or kid tests positive. They have to quarantine everyone around them then disinfect all while trying to study and learn.

Despite their best efforts, the NFL will probably have to end the season early. The NBA and NHL has the best chance at finishing a season by bubbling up their players.

Its going to be a tough run of anything normal for all of us until 1st/2nd quarter of next year.

They went from being an epicenter to having a infection rate below 5% and 1000 people dying to several a day in a shot period of time. It’s not a fair comparison to make living in a less densely populated area like Collegeville, PA or anywhere else. It’s also a low blow to joke about 30,000 dead. Yup. Other countries don’t have anything different than the US to fight COVID-19 except a national plan with coherent message to their people. The US gets to watch other countries economies recover and open safely. People in the US need to realize the economy is directly affected by the pandemic. The faster you get it managed by doing simple, cheap and effective things ie masks, social distancing, washing hands the quicker you get “normal”.

There’s no doubt one vaccine will be announced it’s ready prior to 11/3/2020. The FDA is under a lot of pressure from the White House. However, nothing will be available for wide distribution until at least 2/3 quarter of 2021 possibly later. By then more information will be available on which one is more effective and if there’s side effects. I’ll get one along with my flu vaccine.

Iowa is having an increase of cases. With the Labor Day holiday, and being a big football state they might be the next hot spot. Currently they have no mask mandate in place but that may change.

Quoted from loneacer:

I've noticed my area has pretty much had enough at this point. My co-workers are going to businesses without masks even though there's a mask mandate in both the state of Kansas and the Kansas City counties. When workers or customers approach them about it, they just say no thanks I'm fine.
Less than half of the customers in Walmart had masks, even though Walmart "requires" them.
I've joined a couple bowling leagues in a county that doesn't require masks. 100+ people in there with no masks or social distancing. They announced one member of one of those leagues tested positive already. It's just business as usual.
Some of my old friends / former classmates posted on FB this week that they tested positive. Weird symptoms like swelling and numbness in their face.

That's nuts given what's going on. I don't envy you and your situation so careful out there in MO. Nothing has really leveled off yet and its just a bad or worse than it has been. MO had 9,135 new cases in the past 7 days. The US overall had at least 1,091 new coronavirus deaths and 44,027 new cases were reported **JUST** yesterday.

I think some people are getting numb to the numbers the longer it goes on. People get an increasing false sense of security when nothing happens to them. Its almost the anniversary but just think every 3 days or so we have as many people die that died during 9/11. That's a ton of families affected by having to bury one of their loved ones.

IF YOU GO BACK AND LOOK AT OLD NEWS REPORTS THE EXPERTS HAVE BEEN RIGHT ALMOST 100% OF THE TIME.
The flu doesn't kill over 1/2 a million people in a year! You don't get cancer by going out to a bar with someone that has cancer. If the 25% of people not taking this seriously would wake the hell up and we all worked together this would be over much sooner!

From the 1st death on 2/8/2020, its killed 186,831 as of this posting - in the US . That's 26,690 people dead every month within 7 months and September just started. The vaccines wont be out to the widely available to general public maybe this time next year. Even so, people are hesitant event to get the flue vaccine. It has the potential to kill a lot more if we don't get our act together.

People have not taken the virus seriously in the US and have struggled because we’ve never been told the truth. This is why the US needed a National plan and consistent message. If you tell people over and over again that it’s no big deal some will start to believe it. A lot people are babies and aren’t smart enough to put 2 and 2 together or be responsible for their safety let alone others. They have to be told specifically - wear a mask, wash your hands until it clicks. It’s the reason why we have messaging on products like bleach - “do not swallow” or coffee cups that say “contents are hot”.

The NYPost is like getting your news from the National Enquirer. Fun to read but factual?

From Media Fact Check:

According to an LA Times article, the New York Post was reported to be the preferred newspaper of the U.S. President, who maintains frequent contact with its owner, Rupert Murdoch. The Post, According to a survey conducted by Pace University in 2004, was rated the least-credible major news outlet in New York. Further, The Post has been criticized since the beginning of Murdoch’s ownership for “sensationalism, blatant advocacy, and conservative bias.”

A factual search reveals several failed checks.

Ted Cruz ‘same senator who once supported a ban on sex toys’ – Mostly False
Newly Discovered Planet Could Destroy Earth Any Day Now – False
Hillary Clinton Regularly Had Her Maid Print Classified Documents – Unproven
PS 169 Pledge of Allegiance and Holiday Ban Controversy – Mostly False
‘New York Post’ op-ed rebuts starving children claim that was never made – Pants on Fire

Overall we rate the New York Post on the far end of Right-Center Biased due to story selection that typically favors the Right and Mixed (borderline questionable) for factual reporting based on several failed fact checks. (7/16/2016) Updated (M. Huitsing 7/13/2019)

Admitting you made a mistake and were wrong is hard.

Quoted from Who-Dey:

On a side note its coming out that this virus was created in a Wuhan laboratory and that it was intentionally released by the Chinese government....just as I expected the whole time.

I've mentioned this several times but we had US citizens WORKING INSIDE THIS Wuhan laboratory monitoring things before being pulled out of the country. The organization was called the US Agency for International Development surveillance (USAID) and part of the "PREDICT" program. This agency was shuttered in September 2019 by the Whitehouse 2 months before COVID-19 was discovered. If you don't like the source below then you can search it on Google.

Quoted from Who-Dey:

I would love to say more but I will just leave it at that.

Did we have a hand in creating COVID-19 with the Chinese? What are you hinting at? You elude to knowing more than anyone but never enlighten us here on the real story. I know it seems like I'm picking on you but the stuff you say (confidently) is baseless and sometimes ignorant.

Very well written article on why some people are drawn to conspiracy theories (in general) but can apply to the current virus, i.e. wearing masks, vaccines, etc. Topical also with the Department of Health and Human Services spokesman taking 'leave of absence' conspiracy-laden lament.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/people-drawn-to-conspiracy-theories-share-a-cluster-of-psychological-features/

Some of the takeaway's I got:

- "Anxiety - New research suggests that events happening worldwide are nurturing underlying emotions that make people more willing to believe in conspiracies. Experiments have revealed that feelings of anxiety make people think more conspiratorially. Such feelings, along with a sense of disenfranchisement, currently grip many Americans."
- "Feeling alienated or unwanted also seems to make conspiratorial thinking more attractive."
- "It is not just personal crises that encourage individuals to form conspiratorial suspicions. Collective social setbacks do so as well."
- "Conspiracy theories are a human reaction to confusing times."

Debunked conspiracy theories are seeping into mainstream social media. Many of these have already been posted into this thread including ones that the pandemic was a was engineered in a Chinese lab as a bioweapon.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2020/09/17/qanon-conspiracy-theories-debunked-social-media/5791711002/

Quoted from razorsedge:

- Just "monitoring"? ... So, it can be Proved then? , that there was No Other Kinds of activity being undertaken, than this? . Evidence? . Tough to Prove with So Many open possibilities.

Yes, just monitoring and not tough to prove. So, I'm not sure if you're helping with this. "Scientists and others, including defense and intelligence experts, have said there’s no basis for believing the virus was intentionally released as a bio-weapon.

Agreed

All the sources that would parrot that crap are probably known "whackadoo" sites.

Quoted from manadams:

So what is the magic number of deaths that we need to get down to per year before they stop making masks mandatory and leave it up to personal choice?

Good question. I'm not sure if there is guidance out there yet. What are other countries like Canada doing that has their death rate near or at 0. It may have to be 0 for a consistent amount of time before before its left to the public.

#18811 3 years ago

The US surpasses 7 million cases today with another 900 people dead and increasing cases in 23 states. Florida has relaxed all Covid-19 restrictions on restaurants. Florida had one of the highest if not the highest death rate of all states.

The only other precedent we have is the Spanish flu pandemic. The second wave of the Spanish flu started to spike this time in 1918. Let’s hope the current predicted models for another 180,000 200,000 by January 2021 are incorrect.

Quoted from RonSS:

So, those countries that typically wear masks have a much lower percentage rate than the US? Substantially lower?
I feel its very difficult to compare countries as population densities, hygiene conditions, and numerous other factors can dramatically taint results.
In the end, I'm not too confident anyone really knows what's going on,,,, or at least is telling us. Imagine if our world governments and health organizations said "Shit, there is no way to control this virus, we should tell everyone." I'm not saying that's the case, but I offer it up for discussion.

1) Masks work on cutting down on the spread. The data is out there.
2) Asian countries have been wearing masks for decades. They have lower infection rates/deaths than the US.
3) You said "taint"

If a guy as old as the prez and with his waistline can beat this in a few short days with the stress he was under, that says a lot right there.

“The prez” got a cocktail of meds that maybe only 5-10 people in the world got. He has team of doctors and a floor to his own in the hospital - plus at the Whitehouse there’s a clinic to monitor him 24/7. He beet it only because he very fortunate to be “the Prez’. The average Joe or MAGA supporter won’t see those drugs this year. Probably by this time next year. He tweets don’t be afraid of COVID but we don’t have the resources he has. He doesn’t have to worry but everyone else still does.

Do masks really work?

Masks work giving the wearer up to 5 times the protection than not wearing one. Imagine getting a shot or taking a pill that gives that kind of protection?

#19274 3 years ago
Quoted from russdx:

Just protection via airborne particles? Maybe it spreads the most via surfaces? And we really should be told to wear gloves?

It’s more contagious through the air because it’s lighter than air. It can linger in the air 20 minutes after being expelled. It can live on surfaces like you said but I think it’s more dangerous when it floating around and mobile.

If it gets on your hands you’re not infected and you can wash them. If you breathe it in your nasal passage and lungs you can’t wash those.

Work Scare here also...

New guy started 10/1 worked all day Thursday/Friday. Called out sick the following week and in that week he went for testing. Results came back testing positive for Covid19. Thursday 10/8 management and upper management tell our health guys and await a response. 10/9 the response was that anyone in close contact (6-feet) need to quarantine and get tested. I think 2 people that sat within his cube area are out this week so far. No need for a super duper cleaning because its been over 5 days since he was last here.

Our policy is that we are allowed to sit in our cubes without a mask on (if we want). Only when your walking around or talking with someone else are masks mandated. We also get temperature checked before coming into our space. He did everything right - got temperature tested and sat there without a mask on for 80% of the day. He sits 45-50 feet away from me I guess its a good thing to keep my mask on full time at work since coming back in late April.

I fully expect more cases like this in my office as we head towards the New Year.

Quoted from o-din:

The only way to achieve herd immunity is to expose the herd to it. Especially since there has been more failure on the vaccine front over the last couple days.

Name a virus that was wiped out by Herd immunity alone without a vaccine?

Herd immunity will not work with COVID19. 2/3 of Americans would need to contract the novel coronavirus to have some effective level of herd immunity. With about 330 million people in the United States, that means nearly 220 million people would need to get the virus. Johns Hopkins University reporting the mortality rate of COVID-19 in the United States at almost 3%, that’s calculating out to more than 6,000,000 people dead EVERY YEAR without any breakthrough in treatments. Those aren't good odds. Its dumbfounding any one including the Whitehouse is even hinting at herd immunity but its probably something they researched on Twitter or Facebook.

"The idea is "a dangerous fallacy unsupported by scientific evidence" that risks "significant morbidity and mortality across the whole population," 80 scientists from around the world wrote in an open letter. "

Quoted from o-din:

Especially since there has been more failure on the vaccine front over the last couple days.

This is routine for developing a vaccine. Its not even known if the 1 person that was sick got a placebo or the vaccine. They may have got sick on their own and it was a coincidence.

Quoted from o-din:

Let's just hide out for the next three to four years and let the economy go to hell

No one is saying to "hide out" but they are just asking people to change their behavior and show a little self control for a while. There's a few things to consider. The virus and what its doing to business and peoples confidence level to do things they enjoy i.e. eat out, travel, fly, see a movie in a theater etc. is directly proportionate to "confidence". These types of business depend on how confident people are to do them.

Hypothetically, what if we just say screw it like your semi saying with herd immunity - I'm doing whatever and the situation get even worse - 400,000 people are dead by 1st quarter 2021 (they are predicting this already). Then - its not even about confidence in doing something fun its about basic needs like getting medical attention (when every ICU bed is full), getting food, gas etc.. We had a taste of that already this year already. Neglecting to address the virus in the US since February is just kicking the can down the road.

Quoted from o-din:

99% of the population that won't be getting seriously ill suffer.

Sounds great unless you are the 27,000 people that died every month for the past 8 months in the US. Herd Immunity will kill many more.

Quoted from o-din:

No skin off my back. I can wait it out as long as anybody.

Great attitude! I hope you can...

Quoted from o-din:

I see a lot of people getting restless and no longer want to wait it out any longer. Yesterday's trip to the market with most everybody half ass wearing masks shows they no longer care. And nobody is going to force them to do otherwise.

Having the stamina of a Goldfish and choosing Apathy after 8 months is pathetic...aint it?

I'm no scientist, but am very skeptical of the effectiveness of any vaccine for this virus, so those holding on hope and waiting for that may just be hanging onto wishful thinking.

for those still hanging onto hope that science and a vaccine will fix all this, just remember, myself and at least half the population will not be partaking, so good luck with your shots. Hope it gives you the desired results.

Quoted from o-din:

You might want to work on your own attitude before going after others. Nobody's going to give a shit about anything you say. I might respond, but I certainly don't.
Excuse me, but this isn't the Jerry Springer show. And as much as you might like, you will never be able to force your beliefs or control anybody else's opinion, especially the way you go about it.

You never even read what I wrote and went 0-60 with survival of the fittest and toughest guy on the block shtick. I couldn't have wrote my response any nicer or diplomatic to you. Of course the same 4-5 turds downvote all my responses in frustration or pettiness because they cant provide any logical response to the science either.

Back to the original topic.

When anyone brings up Herd Immunity as a way to deal with the pandemic people are going to call it out. Especially, when it’s been panned officially by 80 doctors and just about EVERY respectable expert on the planet. It’s the equivalent to throwing in the proverbial “wet towel” and saying we give up. Only one country has tried it an per capita they have had more deaths associated than anyone. It’s NOT a belief or opinion but scientifically proven to be the worst way to deal with it. Sorry if the plethora of science conflicts with your “beliefs” or "feelings".

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), which has been cited by the White House Coronavirus Task Force said today 511,373 lives could be lost to COVID-19 across the United States by 28 February 2021.

If universal mask use (95% mask use in public) could save an additional 129,574 lives from September 22, 2020 through the end of February 2021. Similarly, if (85% mask use in public) could save an additional 95,814 lives.
