Quoted from CrazyLevi:

In theory it should be EASY to do Halloween - everybody just wear masks and have fun.

Masks aren't magic. Yes, they do make you somewhat safER, but unless you are talking about full deal biohazard PPE they aren't as safe as not going out and doing the activity at all.

Is fun worth the risk of crippling your children for life or having them come home and kill their grandparents?

The cloth masks everyone is wearing right now are better than nothing, but a far cry from actually making us safe enough to resume normal activity.

That being said I suppose there's one way to make Halloween safe, everyone goes as Walt and Jesse

What we need is not "mask compliance" with weak ass cosmetic masks that have a minimal function in actually stopping the disease from spreading - yes, it's better than nothing, but this stuff is airborne, it's not just in droplets.

What we need is full on ENFORCED ACTUAL stay at home quarantine for a month or three. Not "this is essential work because money". Food, Medicine, Water distribution, electrical grid, internet. Done only by people in PROPER PPE (think full on Hazmat suits). Use the military, and if manpower is needed, conscript the young and healthy (but give them PROPER PPE). Obviously those who are chosen to perform these duties will be given hazard pay to thank them for their service.

Payments of rent and mortgages and debts are suspended and all accrual of interest on debts is frozen until the quarantine is over. All economic activity is suspended in order to make the playing field level for those whose jobs depend upon leaving home vs. those whose do not. That solves the economic problem.

We could do it, if there was the political will.

Quoted from Jaybird815:

I said from the beginning a half ass lock down won’t work, but the reality is a full lock down like you’re suggesting isn’t realistic, there would be mass rioting/protests in day 1.

Simple solution for that. An Apache Helicopter can put a stop to a riot real quick.

So it's been almost a year and there's STILL a shortage of the GOOD masks to the point where Amazon won't sell them to you unless you are a hospital or similar. Why haven't we stepped up production of these to the point where everyone can have them by now?

Quoted from cottonm4:

Also, as time marches on, I find myself watching more and more ads on You Tube and less shows. The ads are getting more frequent and longer. Even the cat videos are getting covered up with ads (sigh).

ublock origin. you're welcome.

#20387 3 years ago
Quoted from cottonm4:

Why, thank you for an answer that has me chasing for my book of cryptic messages. Nothing in there about "unblock origin". And as much as I hate to admit that I don't know all that much about computers, you got me red handed. I don't know what you are talking about. I guess I'll have to keep watching the ads. Bummer.

Not unblock. Ublock.

Quoted from OLDPINGUY:

While I disagree with your perspective, I am interested to know What your solution to the Virus would be?
Say its February, you run the US, and you have just learned all about the Virus from your Experts.
What would you have done as President of the US, to Fix this, that is horrible now, so that this didnt happen and we arent where we are today?

Not the guy you were asking, but here's my solution.

1) Absolute travel ban on entry into the US. No exceptions. Yes, this regrettably includes citizens currently abroad at the time but it is a matter of national security.

2) Ground all passenger air travel and suspend operations of large scale long distance passenger ground travel (trains, buses, etc). Declare martial law and set up blockades on the highways preventing nonessential travel until we can identify where (if anywhere) the virus has slipped into the country. Authorize the use of lethal force to deal with resistance.

3) Immediately secure supplies of PPE, disinfectants, etc. Do not allow any shipments of such to leave the country. Initiate emergency production of such materials at all domestic facilities capable of such.

4) Suspend all collection of rents, property tax, mortgage, bills, etc. for anyone in affected industries, starting from the bottom up.

5) Any city where cases are detected will be immediately quarantined no one in no one out. Lethal force to be deployed on people attempting to leave.

6) Activate the draft to secure a source of personnel to set up an emergency distribution network of PPE-equipped people to start distributing food, water, medicine, etc. to locked down people.

7) Recall troops from overseas (but put them through testing and quarantine procedures before bringing them in) to use to contain the domestic crisis. Abandon occupation of Iraq, Afghanistan, etc and put those troops to work securing our nation from this existential threat.

8 ) Relief packages for any individuals and small businesses financially impacted from the lockdown. Large corporations, and especially banks and financial institutions, will be where we shift the economic burden, with companies involved in producing actual tangible goods, and services being favored for less burden, and those which simply financialize (banks, credit card companies, private equity firms) bearing the most. Companies which attempt to escape this burden by moving assets overseas will have those assets seized and their board of directors and CEOs arrested for treason.

9) Politicians and judges that attempt to block neccessary emergency actions will be arrested for treason. We can figure out what's "legal" and what's "constitutional" and all that bullshit when the crisis is over.

it's absolutely insane that professional sports (other than, like maybe golf) are not shut down. you can't "socially distance" while playing basketball or football or hockey.

#20804 3 years ago
Quoted from Oaken:

Find good news where you can, but how do you distinguish a locker room spreader event vs. a gameplay spreader event?
I would imagine the after game pizza party vs the game proper would be difficult to distinguish.
I dunno man, but it’s almost as if saying infections only occur during the second period, so let’s just play the first and third.

kind of like saying we'll close bars at 10pm because apparently the virus can tell time

#20821 3 years ago
Quoted from toddsolus:

Letting bars open at all is a compromise in many instances. I personally think all public social experiences have to be curtailed for the greater good.....but that's my choice.

There shouldn't be a compromise. Either it's safe to be open or it's not. The time of day doesn't matter. And it shouldn't come down to anyone's choice. If the bar can't make money then the government needs to provide relief so they aren't motivated to try to force themselves open when it's not safe. Give them mortgage/rent forgiveness.

The problem is half assed lockdowns are worse than no lockdowns at all. Because they do nothing to stop the virus, while making people resentful at the restrictions. And doing them long term is unsustainable. You can't curtail public social experiences forever, as people will have no way to meet and form new families and have children.

A short harsh lockdown coupled with forced rapid testing and quarantining as opposed to a long "kind of" lockdown that relies largely on voluntary compliance and violations of which are treated with the severity of a traffic mistake.

"Voluntaryism doesn't work well for public health, and western liberal societies lack the will and mechanisms to involuntarily restrict movement and interaction, which is the main way you stop a pandemic."
https://twitter.com/Midnight_Blaze_/status/1343317521525600257

"Which is to say that masks and social distancing would have been very useful secondary measures IF we had had the ability to restrict movement, with a full stop on international travel in Jan or by stopping interstate travel from places where the virus was spreading in Feb/Mar."
https://twitter.com/Midnight_Blaze_/status/1343323756450689024

"But we couldn't. So, all we have now are these palliative measures- masks and distancing -that might keep individuals safe for as long as they can manage to abide by them, but don't really do anything to end the virus and return society to normal operation."

Quoted from nwpinball:

How much voluntary compliance is there?

anything less than 100% might as well be 0 when it comes to getting rid of the virus which is why this wasn't over by June.

#21000 3 years ago
Quoted from smalltownguy2:

Can you cite your scientific data to support this claim? That 100% vaccination is the only way to eradicate this (or any) virus?

didn't say that. I said anything less than 100% COMPLIANCE. talking about the halfassed "shutdowns"/"restrictions"

Quoted from hAbO:

I was watching the news last night (Lester Holt) and Canada will have enough doses to vaccinage their population 4 or 5 times over. The US will have enough for 3 I believe. The piece was about getting the world vaccinated because Covid will just linger if the poorer countries arent taken care of. Its essentially a large scale 70% herd immunity by getting the world vaccinated not just the US, UK, Canada etc.

Or we could just shut the borders and not let anybody from any other countries in. Which if we had done in January/February 2020 we could have stopped it from ever coming here.

#21465 3 years ago
Quoted from hAbO:

You cant stop the air coming in to the country from what I understand Closing the borders helps deter spread/people somewhat but if you really want into the country you'll find a way. People from one courntry that is banned can fly to another country first then the US (ie China/UK to Canada to US). It was already here in January/February if I remember correctly.

You stop that by banning ALL countries. Also restricting internal travel, if we had done that in March it would have stayed a New York problem.

Anybody ever go to Waffle House knockoff Huddle House? Pretty much the same shit!

Are there Huddle Houses that aren't part of Flying J truck stops?

Quoted from DaWezl:

The explanation I saw last spring (ie early on) was that the structure of virus indicated it wasn’t man made. The reason they felt so sure was because the way the virus is constructed, it used elements that bioengineers would have dismissed as ineffective. I haven’t come across any similar technical details to justify why anyone feels it’s lab made.
Here’s the full explanation:
Scientists have said that if the virus was made in a lab then its structure would reveal that it would have been created from viruses that are already known and there would be signs of manipulation.
“These two features of the virus, the mutations in the RBD portion of the spike protein and its distinct backbone, rules out laboratory manipulation as a potential origin for SARS-CoV-2,” Kristian Andersen, an associate professor of immunology and microbiology at Scripps Research and one of the authors of the paper, said in a news release in March.
https://apnews.com/article/9391149002

That just shows it wasn't deliberately man made from the bottom up. That doesn't rule out the virus having been studied and worked on in the Wuhan biolab, and it certainly doesn't rule out either negligence or malice from playing a role in releasing it (personally I lean toward negligence being the most likely).

Nah, a Karen is still a privileged white person that thinks the rules don't apply to them and they can use their privilege to get their own way.

A Karen can be any race. The important thing is the entitled attitude.
