Why did the mods merge all the Corona threads when we’re supposed to be social distancing?

Should be a max of 6 people per thread.

Quoted from LeChuck:

Every single person I know that is high risk has the same attitude (while everyone around them is flipping out trying to protect them). I don’t get it, but there seems to be a trend.

Been saying this all along. But the irony is these people will be safer because of what everyone responsible is doing. Then when this is all over, the vulnerable will say “see, told you so, wasn’t so bad”.

Bit like wolfemaaan .

Came across my feed today (a bit depressing):

“””””For those of you thinking this is just the flu and no big deal VS all the people that die from the regular flu, and don’t understand how this all started...this is a GREAT explanation and a must read:

From an immunologist at Johns Hopkins University...

Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand...

It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics.

Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.

Novel viruses, come from ANIMALS....the WHO (World Health Organization) tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem. Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity. The RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off.

Now sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human. For years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human, before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human. Once that happens, we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, that’s what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be.

H1N1 was deadly, but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently too.

Fast forward.

Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from ANIMAL TO PEOPLE. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated AGAIN and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”

This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity), took off like a rocket!! And this was because humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it.

And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way that it causes great damage to human lungs.

That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.

We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.

Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation...

And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do next.

Be smart folks... acting like you’re unafraid is so not sexy right now, and frankly stupid and selfish.

#flattenthecurve. Stay home folks... and share this to those that just are not catching on.

Quoted from rotordave:

Pretty funny reading this thread and the talk of getting fast food, eating in restaurants, shopping etc. I cracked up at all those exceptions to the lockdown in Dallas that someone posted - “big box retail” can open? WTF! Pointless.
Here’s what’s happening in New Zealand.
Last Weds 11.59pm - the whole country was locked down for 4 weeks.
- Every store is closed - except supermarkets, pharmacies, gas stations and a couple of others, all operated on a one out - one in basis. No burgers. No coffee shops. No Walmart type stores. Nothing. All closed. No buses or trains either.
- People shopping stand 2m apart, no direct contact with employees.
- everyone is staying at home. If you want some exercise, you can walk around the block but keep 2m away from anyone.
- government is paying employers $580 a week subsidy for each employee to cover three months work. My brother owns a furniture store with a number of staff - he filled in a form Tuesday and had $60,000 in his account Wednesday.
- pretty much everyone is doing as they have been told. Anyone who doesn’t makes the National news and gets shamed out - like just before, we had the prime minister saying “some guys went in a group to a store to buy mince pies!” Lol.
- Internet usage is running at almost full capacity
- Three days in (its Saturday here) the infected numbers only increased the same as yesterday - ie it didn’t double. 80 more cases yesterday, 80 more today. Too early to tell, but that’s positive.
- no deaths here so far. Only 2 in intensive care, both with existing conditions to complicate things.
- almost all the 450 existing cases are from people who came here from overseas. Either kiwis returning after vacation, or tourists.
- government flagged that even if our 4 week lockdown is a success, overseas travel might be out for 12-18 months.
Lots of time on our hands to fix pinball machines ...
Here’s Auckland busiest motorway yesterday:

Pity they can’t start filming some movies now that the streets are deserted.

Quoted from dirkdiggler:

Few things that stand out on that chart. Germany is 4th with 85000 cases but only 1100 deaths. Also check out the Netherlands death rate to number of cases compared to Canada. That's pretty alarming.

So many variables, particularly how many tests are being done and under what circumstances you get tested.

Netherlands is going down the “herd” path. Because of this I’m assuming they also don’t test until the person is already in hospital and already really sick. Germany might be more proactive and therefore testing a wider range of the population. Same with Canada.

The US has a relatively low mortality rate compared to number of positive cases. That seems odd given the apparent lack (late) of preparation.

Quoted from pinky:

in the Netherlands we didn't do a lot of testing so the number of confirmed cases is severely underreported.
The number of IC beds has been doubled to ~2400 but estimates are they will all be occupied mid next week, they may send some patients to German hospitals but we expect the death toll to rise significantly. Also the average time patients spent in an IC bed on a ventilator is ~3 weeks, this causes the IC's to stay full for a very long time.

What does a native Hollander think about your countrys‘ “herd” policy?
