Quoted from RWH:

people are dying for lack of those essentials we should not turn a blind eye to those intent on profiting for this disaster.

Weird that feds haven’t put defense production act into action to make up for shortages in protective equipment and vents...that would slow the spread. If healthcare workers get it from lack of gear=fewer healthcare workers. They said they would use dpa only in “worst case scenario”. When is that?

#67 4 years ago
Quoted from RWH:

My understanding is they did just that yesterday. Anyone have more concrete info on this?

They signed an “executive order” that says maybe they’d use it but didn’t enact it...didn’t actually DO anything with it.

“ would only use the powers granted under the Defense Production Act "in a worst case scenario."

"I only signed the Defense Production Act to combat the Chinese Virus should we need to invoke it in a worst case scenario in the future,"

#72 4 years ago
Quoted from Psw757:

there was a report that it was enacted and several factories either added additional lines

Do you have link? I couldn’t find anything other than the maybe we’d use it and vp mentioned it to boeing or someone. Nothing concrete or urgent sounding.

CDC just put out numbers on hospitalizations if “young “ people

https://news.google.com/articles/CAIiEBbhZ-I1_3htBLFeSl0-kWcqFwgEKg8IACoHCAowjuuKAzCWrzwwxqlf?hl=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US%3Aen

New C.D.C. data shows that nearly 40 percent of patients sick enough to be hospitalized were age 20 to 54.

Quoted from swampfire:

Open source ventilator project

That’s for Ireland only I think. Cool though, sad it comes to that but cool they can do it.

#92 4 years ago
Quoted from RWH:

Look at all the other nations, they were in the same boat as us so far as preparedness.

Not the 60 nations that accepted the WHO covid test back in January. South Korea found it’s first case exact same day as US. They’ve tested how many ? 100’s of thousands AND they have containment. This stuff matters to our reaction going forward.

#98 4 years ago
Quoted from RWH:

What 60 nations, no nation is doing well period. I keep hearing about S. Korea, Singapore but realistically you can't compare the US

https://www.google.com/amp/s/mobile.reuters.com/article/amp/idUSKBN2153BW

Just read their reaction and look at the numbers and where they are on the curve. It’s not opinion.

#102 4 years ago
Quoted from RWH:

it won't work, it's too small both geographically and population wise

Geography has nothing to do with it. Korea drafted private companies 5 weeks before us to ramp up test kit production...that’s just 1 example

#112 4 years ago
Quoted from RWH:

Geo absolutely plays a role, a huge role when it comes to supplies and how to get them where they are needed.

By that logic our supply chains would be stressed in this Country 24/7. Amazon has same day shipping! What specifically do you think we couldn’t ship fast enough within that same 5 week period? It starts with enlisting the companies 5 weeks earlier and then getting the supplies moving. We didn’t do that. We STILL aren’t apparently utilizing the defense act...today, now. This all happened weeks ago in Korea for example.

We live in a representative democracy. They work for us and represent us. We should hold them to higher standards...definitely in matters of life and death. I’m not going to shrug it off and give a pass. They have to do better. They wargamed this scenario 3 years ago...

Quoted from RTR:

look like an overreaction

That’s what the disease people say, if it looks like an overreaction later, that means you were successful on some level.

#160 4 years ago
Quoted from wolfemaaan:

Most people will live, and like the “experts” say old or vulnerable people will not. I’m curious how many Twenty year olds on this thread think this is overrated vs 50+ that are screaming chicken little

Latest CDC numbers referenced already in this thread. High percentage of 20-54 required hospitalization.

Read more. Stay informed. You have no parents or grandparents or elderly people in your orbit?

Stay healthy!

#313 4 years ago
Quoted from hockeymag8:

reading and hearing from our Medical doctor there is some optimism about using Chloroquine as treatment for COVID-19. Any thoughts/insight if this is/will be effective? Thank you!

Lead Doctor for gov Fauci downplayed that drug just today with a flat NO.

Said it’s way too early, not nearly enough evidence etc

#314 4 years ago
Quoted from Oaken:

We need to improve on our coordinated response. Otherwise we will get more mistakes like this:
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-19/trump-told-governors-to-buy-own-virus-supplies-then-outbid-them

Winning!

#455 4 years ago

In the second appeal in a week, the American Medical Association called on the Trump administration on Friday to address a “critical shortage” of coronavirus testing kits and personal protective gear for health care professionals that “remains unmet.”
“For days, physicians and frontline healthcare workers have been sounding the alarm that there is nowhere near enough PPE [personal protective equipment] ... a shortage that endangers patients and jeopardizes the entire response to this virus,” Dr. Patrice Harris, president of the AMA, said in a statement.

#460 4 years ago
Quoted from PantherCityPins:

Short answer is no.

Read we need 3.5 billion masks and feds have “plans” to buy 500 million...soon?

#574 4 years ago

Maybe we walls separating those states that choose to let virus spread? Have fever checkpoints at “border”?

The government will pay up to 80 per cent of wages for workers' at risk of being laid off due to the coronavirus pandemic, the chancellor has announced.

Any employer in the country will be able to apply to HMRC for payments of up to £2,500 per worker per month - just above the median UK income - Rishi Sunak said on Friday.

#661 4 years ago
Quoted from Tuukka:

now is not the time to blame anyone

Sure it is. If we ignore failures and lies we resign to let them continue.

For example, if you were briefed in say, January by your intelligence agency that covid was serious and a likely threat, then for weeks called it a hoax and encouraged people to ignore it...it’s good to know that and inform our opinion of what you say today.

Demand the best of all elected officials. We pay them, they represent us.

#665 4 years ago
Quoted from RWH:

I think things got leaked to them

Things got leaked to us in January as well...the reaction was not the same here unfortunately

#667 4 years ago
Quoted from BillySastard:

This is the thing I will never, ever forget or forgive. Ever.

That and the WHO tests that 60 Countries accepted in January and we refused. Nobody in government has given a good reason for this. Test, isolate, test, isolate...it’s not rocket surgery. That’s the formula but if you don’t test, then you’re screwed.

#689 4 years ago
Quoted from DBLM:

It's ok to be upset about testing, but lets make sure that we have facts straight.

We’re saying the same thing in different ways. They didn’t use the protocols that worked in the WHO test, instead started from scratch:

Testing began at the CDC, and on February 5, the agency announced it would begin shipping test kits to public health labs around the country. Just a day later, the World Health Organization said it had already shipped 250,000 tests to more than 70 laboratories around the world.
As WHO shipped hundreds of thousands of tests, broader US testing struggled to begin. Days after CDC's tests shipped, some labs reported that the test kits were not working as expected, which eventually required tests be re-manufactured.

#691 4 years ago
Quoted from Psw757:

Refused to declare it a Pandemic

And our leader called it a hoax and downplayed the seriousness even after his own intelligence officials told him in January it was serious.

Very fine mistakes on both sides you could say.

-3
#707 4 years ago
Quoted from jimjim66:

Quoted from Who-Dey:

Stop spreading lies. That is 100% false!

Isn’t it MORE outrageous that the POTUS would say anything like this? Target your pearl clutching elsewhere please. We all know what he said.

Point is....at rally...saying bs, instead of being in 911 blinking red light alert mode because his intelligence agency told him a potentially deadly pathogen was coming.

Could have been preparing Country, but, nope.

#821 4 years ago
Quoted from RTR:

It was a soft toss that anyone should have been able to knock out of the park

Wrong! Clearly a partisan hit job by the illuminati!

Empathy!? Who needs it?

#824 4 years ago

“Who” sent out the talking point to blame the WHO for not calling it a pandemic quick enough? That’s one of the more illogical arguments I’ve heard and it just “spontaneously” seemed to pop up today. Lol

#829 4 years ago
Quoted from Psw757:

Your kidding me right?
The CDC repeatedly like a month ago said that it technically was a pandemic yet the WHO didn’t declare it until much later.
Are you saying this didn’t happen?

Ha. No. Saying that it is suddenly being used to excuse the USA being uniquely horrible at dealing with it.

The WHO gave the test that was quickly and easily made to the world in January. I think they treated it seriously. It’s the height of gaslighting to suggest they didn’t when it’s obvious our Country’s leadership dropped the ball.

#851 4 years ago
Quoted from fosaisu:

He’s curious why people are talking about the WHO today, but weren’t last week. Where did you first hear about the WHO’s pandemic declaration date such that it now seems like a key failure to take action, vs whatever our own state and federal leaders did or failed to do? There were a ton of threads and posts so I could have missed it, but I don’t remember seeing you or others bring this up until recently.

I’ll just give you my comments to edit before going to print. You explain it better than I can. Might be because my head has exploded several times.

#897 4 years ago
Quoted from PantherCityPins:

we are using a disposable paper gown, gloves, facemask with a shield or eye goggles for swabbing coronavirus patients.

What say you to this expert analysis?

“Why aren’t we sanitizing masks?” . “You look at the masks, I’ve looked at all the different masks. Some don’t lend themselves to doing that but many do. ... We have very good liquids for doing this, sanitizing the masks, and that’s something they’re starting to do more and more of.”

I’ve been doing the unpack stuff in garage, then I kill it with some lysol and leave non-essentials out there a few days. For perishable delivery, I lysol packages and let it dry and then hope for the best.

I read a detailed article on their best guess and they said unlikely but not impossible to catch it from boxes, bags, packages.

Rand Paul, Senate typhoid mary:

#1292 4 years ago
Quoted from Spyderturbo007:

It was only a few days into this mess and I started hearing about PPE shortages!!! Every CEO that let this happen, for the benefit of higher profits, should be fired. Idiots.

I think it’s because they have to wear head to toe gear and then chuck it after each use...AND they have to treat everyone as if they have it so they are burning through it

#1296 4 years ago

Agreed. Not following the guidelines that they established. Effing Idiot. The senate are predominantly old ass men which is the highest risk group for serious health issues with covid

#1307 4 years ago

Or go to the gym and a dip in the pool!

#1316 4 years ago

Enough of this, I’m going to hit the gym and maybe a have a dip in the pool (when most large municipalities have banned such things). Why? I am a rebel without a clue.

I also might grab a covid test for shits and giggles while I’m out cuz that’s easy to do for the hell of it...no reason, just being cautious. All of this according to my spokesman, me.

Quoted from Lermods:

1. He is telling parents it’s ok to take your kids to playgrounds, but to maintain 6 feet. Have you ever seen a 3 year old be able to maintain distance from other 3 year olds. Not good policy.
2. He said the federal government has provided nothing so far to nyc, which I think is not consistent with what the feds have said. He also said he’s not aware of any company being told to repurpose production anywhere in the US. Also not consistent with what the feds havecsaid

Interesting?! I thought it was terrifying. Like that coach said, they are what we thought they were. Diehards absolutely refuse to deal with the fact that the person leading us in this moment is not helping but hurting the effort. Sad and pathetic in my opinion.

#1842 4 years ago

Some reports that Mr abundance of caution I wasn’t exposed so going to the Senate gym and pool is cool, Rand Paul, actually suspected he was exposed at an event a couple weeks back where it turns out 2 positive people were in attendance.

THAT’s why he was tested. So, he’s lying and exposed a good portion of the leadership of the Country to it. Nice example Rand.

#2148 4 years ago

Today’s talking point: the disease is worse than the cure.

Yesterday’s: WHO blew it by not literally saying “Pandemic” fast enough.

Agree:

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Trump ally, advised against shifting course, calling it "a major mistake" in an interview with the Washington Post. “I just spoke with Dr. Fauci — he believes that, if anything, we should be more aggressive and do more."

Graham continued: "You can’t have a functioning economy if you have hospitals overflowing."

WTF? This makes no sense. We’re even more screwed if this happens:

Our people want to return to work. They will practice Social Distancing and all else, and Seniors will be watched over protectively & lovingly. We can do two things together. THE CURE CANNOT BE WORSE (by far) THAN THE PROBLEM! Congress MUST ACT NOW. We will come back strong!

#2310 4 years ago

True!! But congress keeps bickering about pork projects not relevant to the crisis!

PHOENIX – A man has died and his wife was in critical care Monday after the couple ingested a chemical as self-medication for the new coronavirus, Banner Health announced in a press release.

Where’s the pork?

“ direct has payments to every American with a tax ID number of $1,500, up to $7,500 for a family of five, available to retirees and the unemployed. Beyond that, it creates a "Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation" program that provides $600 a week to any worker eligible for unemployment benefits, including self-employed workers, contractors and new entrants to the job market. It would supplement existing benefits to replace 100% of wages for the average worker. The House plan would also expand sick days and family medical leave to "nearly ever worker," and expands and gives an infusion of funds to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

It would provide more than $150 billion to hospitals and community health centers, as well as other government medical programs. In addition, it provides $80 billion in low-interest loans to hospitals. It prohibits insurance companies from imposing cost-sharing on coronavirus treatments and vaccines for every patient, including the uninsured and increases the subsidies available through the ACA marketplaces. It would also open enrollments on the ACA marketplace and provide incentives for the 14 states that haven't expanded Medicaid to take it. It has $500 billion in grants and interest-free loans for small businesses and provides a $200 billion stabilization fund for states and $15 billion to local governments.

It also includes strict conditions for any corporation receiving bailout funds, including bans on using funds for stock buy-backs. Critically, it would provide funding to states national vote-by-mail to protect the 2020 elections.”

Only Old people

A 12-year-old girl named Emma from Atlanta, Georgia, is on a ventilator and “fighting for her life” after testing positive for the novel coronavirus, her cousin Justin Anthony told CNN. Emma was diagnosed with pneumonia on March 15 and tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday. As of Saturday, she is on a ventilator and in stable condition at the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta-Scottish Rite Hospital, Anthony said.

According to her family, Emma had no preexisting health conditions, nor did she travel recently so it is not clear how she contracted the virus. "The patient remains in isolation, and we have consistently used appropriate precautions. Additional details will not be released due to patient privacy laws," Jessica Pope told CNN, a spokesman from the hospital.

Russia has so far reported 495 cases of the virus and one death, far fewer than major western European countries.

Putin has previously said the situation is under control, but some doctors have questioned how far official data reflect reality, and the government on Tuesday closed nightclubs, cinemas and children's entertainment centres to slow the spread of the virus.

It would be nice if we knew that having had it provided 100% immunity so you could just go about life not worrying about it anymore.

Based on interviews with Docs on this, the immunity thing is up in the air. Sounds like your immunity is based on the viral load you had. Even with a high amount you aren't forever immune--at most a year or two is their best guess. If you had a mild case, it may be only immunity for a few months and they aren't even positive on that!

So, if you've had it I wouldn't assume 100% anything...there were even anecdotal reports of reinfection. I would still avoid exposure even after having it.

#4799 4 years ago
Quoted from Wickerman2:

The avalanche of blame NYC is ludicrous. They are a hot spot NOW(they have also tested the most by far). There are plenty of places that will get there, and they are not just in “blue” states.

What makes New York and the US so unique that we can't use quarantines in an emergency public health crisis?

Can’t use that strategy without testing. We are 4-6 weeks late at least in testing. It makes no sense to quarantine based on inadequate testing. NYC has done THE MOST testing in US. This is everywhere, stop saying NYC is spreading it up and down the coast. Manhattan folks don’t flee to rural Georgia.

However, pretending like quarantines of hotzone areas where thousands already have it are worthless at this point is ridiculous.

Good news but why didn’t they get sent when Governor Polis asked? Or our other Senator...what’s special about Cory? Oh well, at least we’re getting them.

Michigan state Rep. Karen Whitsett thanks Trump, hydroxychloroquine for helping save her life from coronavirus

So we can thank him for something that may have worked but not blame him for things that go South? Can I report on healthcare workers that are doing the opposite of thanking him?

but my sense is that you desire failure for political reasons

Your sense is incorrect and your post is personally insulting. I don’t particularly care though so that’s fine. It’s not about me or you. I want success but I also want realistic factual information presented.

It was an honest question given the posting rules. There is a massive amount of places where our response could improve but posting anything critical is questioned, yet posting thank you by name is cool.

I am thinking critically and will continue regardless. Ignore my posts if they are bothering you.

Vents, PPE, medicine and any other supplies we need NOW!
Yes we are running out and have very little ways of manufacturing more because almost everything we need comes from China.
What is the solution?

California governor may have figured it out. Sounds like he said screw this competing with other states and fema...used CA purchasing power and committed to a monthly contract for 200 million masks/month.

This is NOT the time to be playing partisan politics!!!

Agreed. Colorado should get ventilators when the Governor begs for them, not only when the gop Senator up for re-election asks. That seems clearly political.

So I'm not clear why several people keep trying to discrete every post that someone post on that SHOWS it is doing some good.

Because science vs anecdotes...also some serious double standards

What you really meant to say was because it was mentioned by someone that isn't in your political preference.

Nothing to do with it. Keep politics out of it please. No “sides”. Science isn’t a “side”. It’s science. Listen to the vast majority of Doctors that want to be safe, but hopeful, like Dr. Fauci. Please lay off the political sides stuff.

Sounds like the plan was to transition to some other testing but that’s not in place yet. Weird they would stop. Everything says to get Country open again you need massive testing and contact tracing.

Quoted from TheFamilyArcade:

I have a sinking suspicion more and more people that live alone are going to be discovered dead in their homes before this is over. Lots of apartment buildings in NYC.

Emergency Medical Service data first reported by Gothamist suggests the undercount of individuals who have likely died from the virus is massive. On Tuesday alone, 256 people were pronounced dead at home across the five boroughs. Until this month, about 25 people in New York City were found dead in their homes on a typical day, suggesting that most of Tuesday’s calls were related to the outbreak that has already killed over 5,400 people across the state and infected 140,386 more.

#8880 4 years ago
Quoted from woody76:

there are also studies suggesting overcounts of deaths.

I’ve heard that reported by Tucker Carlson and Bill O’reilly. The line seems to be, these people were on their last legs anyway, something would have killed them. The stats in NYC seem logically to point to covid...if they normally have 25 dead in homes, and now they have 200-300? What’s happening now that might cause that? Birx and Fauci just addressed this contention of over counting and said it’s false and has no basis. Seems like political messaging.
