This may be the rum talking but read if you want.....
Look, a complete shutdown is impossible. But all the people out and about ARE not all essential/critical services/jobs.

They could LITERALLY shit down EVERYTHING but healthcare/police/fire and utilities. Government aid should step in to not give money...but perhaps work with grocers to supply food and deliver it in as non contact of a way as possible. So trucking industry would be needed but they are pretty isolated. There is a better way to distance everyone than what we are doing.

My belief however is from an economic standpoint people of power And wealth that have the means to protect themselves have lots to gain once we recover from this. Throwing money in people’s pockets is NOT the answer. I made over 99K so I get no relief so why should I even pay taxes when they don’t benefit me in times of need like this. Politics aside it does not matter who was running the country. No one was prepared to tackle this. No president has the balls to shut a country down a month in advance. Why is there ANY air travel allowed??? Local authorities should should have state borders shut down!!! If they were serious about this isolation they would have National Guard/military shitting down ALL non essential travel. Threaten people with fines and jail for being out is a JOKE!!! They are RELEASING people from jail.

The truth is government knows people are DUMB and PANICKY ANIMALS...so shutting down a whole country when the average person cannot understand the threat that is coming would cause a huge uproar.

We have done too little too late to flatten the curve. Watch the numbers....can’t say how bad it’s really gonna get but we have not peaked in the US....too many people out and about. Many have the virus and don’t know.

Stay safe everyone!!!

So while many of you throwing political shots across each other’s bows.....you may have missed:
Allen Merrill the writer of I Love Rock-n-Roll has died of Corona.
Joe Diffie has died of Corona.
Sure there are other known people we will hear of. Of course family and friends will always hit us the hardest. Hope everyone is well and staying safe!!!

John Prine is hospitalized in critical condition with covid. I may have to lock up the liquor or a door may get torn from the hinges if this thing takes him.

Damn....another one.
There’s a hole in Daddy’s arm where all the money goes.

#5663 4 years ago

So what really grinds my gears about this whole stimulus package is I pay taxes just like everyone else.....you know what I get....NOTHING, NADA, ZILCH....why because someone decides if you make X amount you don’t qualify. Why should I even pay taxes if I get no benefit from it when I could use it just like most others....I don’t make hundreds of thousands or millions...those folks could care less about $1200. Was not married when I filed my taxes but I am now and I know what she makes and we would have qualified and gotten $2400....WTF!!! It makes no sense. Pisses me off...throwing money at people is not the answer anyway....

#5677 4 years ago

I guess I am not really mad about not getting the $1200 but that is not enough to help people for as long as this is looking to last. There are better things the government can do with that money to take care of the people. Putting money in people pockets is bad. Majority of people are bad with money and won’t spend it wisely. It’s not a long term solution to this problem....it may feed people today but what about another week or two......oh stimulus package number 2....would not shock me if it happened.

So current numbers of recorded confirmed cases are at 1 million. Number of deaths are now 50,000. No way to know the unconfirmed/ unreported cases and deaths. But going on recorded cases that’s about 5% that die. Let’s see the numbers again in 2 weeks.

On a conservative estimate let’s say a little less than half the population of China got it....that’s 500 million roughly. If 5% die that is 25 million dead....problem is we will never no how many had it and real numbers of how many died....but we know reports of 21 million cell phones cancelled/deactivated in China have been rumored.

US numbers currently indicate a little less than 2.5% of the confirmed cases have died.

The more data we have the more we can predict how many may die.
If 2.5% is accurate and 50% of the US population gets the virus you could estimate 3.7 MILLION people may die. This is serious. Let’s hope as more data is collected we see the actual fatality rate below 1%

Only recently have we had enough testing in the US to start getting accurate data. The more testing done the more data and we can see trends. Hopefully for the better....flattening of the curve....lower fatality rate...and successful treatments!

#6678 4 years ago

Let’s watch the numbers as they keep updating and hope fatality rate drops....the unknown variable we cannot tell is how many people overall have been exposed because we can’t test everyone at once to establish a baseline. We don’t know enough to say 50% of people are immune or not gonna have effects/symptoms. Time will tell of the reported numbers are accurate. Another number that is important is the number of people who recovered. That’s a key one to watch.....

This is simple percents and ratios but data is needed. From this we can predict equipment, beds, healthcare workers, etc. needed for these situations.

#6779 4 years ago
Quoted from KerryImming:

Even with testing limited to people with symptoms, the fatality rate is only 2% here in MN. Broader testing will increase the denominator and this will be <1%. Not to minimize COVID-19, that's still a lot of deaths.

As we get more data we can only hope the fatality rate gets <1%. Current numbers indicate 2-5% so we need significant changes in the numbers. It’s only a best guess right now and the numbers are SCARY!

Until there is a vaccine or successfully proven treatment this could go on for a LONG time. We don’t know if this spread will die off or continue to resurge. The Spanish Flu took about 2 years and killed an estimated 675,000 in the US alone.

He is kind of known for if it don’t fit you must acquit....must still be looking for some gloves that fit.

Yes....nursing homes/assisted living facilities are having a hard time. Unfortunately many people are not equipped to take their loved ones out of these places. The time to do that for many was weeks ago. It’s a tough call.

The place where my Father-in-law is at just had a resident test positive. They have been removed. And now an associate at the facility who was Asymptotic has tested positive.

This whole thing sucks. It’s really the Asymptotic people that makes this so tough....no symptoms but can carry and spread it. Sick people know they are sick.

Even with PPE and proper precautions taken you only reduce the chance of spreading or catching the virus. There is still risk and ultimately we can distance but some contact from the outside is inevitable....even if you have ALL essentials delivered there is still a risk with ANYTHING you bring into your home. I am sure most of us understand all this but there are some that don’t.

The truth is probably until this slowly spreads to everyone and only then will this begin to end. And now reports are coming out that people may get it again even if they already had it??? Hope this is not true but so much we are still learning about this virus. Too much misinformation out there.

We live in an instant gratification society. Unfortunately time is needed for a safe and effective treatment/vaccine. Hard for most to accept this.

I feel this is the first wave for us in the US....the numbers will flatten and the mistake will be made to get back to “normal” to soon and we will see this all over again. Maybe not as bad but if the virus does not die out it will continue for some time. Hope I am wrong on this.

#9109 4 years ago
Quoted from Wickerman2:

Only answer seems to be widespread testing. Not sure how you go back to anything "normal" without cure/vaccine which is months and months off at least without testing.

You get it! Unfortunately widespread testing in a timely manner is not feasible currently. And we know testing is not 100% reliable at the moment.

Now at an isolated facility they can test everyone.

The long term solution is what we are all wanting to know....how and WHEN can we get back to a level of “normal” we had prior to this. There is no single answer for this. Our behavior for certain things will have to remain changed to slow/stop the spread.

There is much unknown and misinformation on the spread...how long the virus can live on cardboard, plastic, metal, airborne transmission, etc. What treatment is actually effective. We really don’t know Jack shit to be honest...doctors and scientists are trying every possible combination of drug cocktails looking for anything that works. They will find it but it will take time.

#9122 4 years ago

Yes....the employees working at multiple places is an issue...can spread to multiple facilities. Even though they can quarantine the residents to their apartments they have contact with the staff DAILY and in close quarters it will spread. Unless they have ALL the PPE and follow proper protocols transmission is highly probable. An unfortunate position to be in. I am not saying there are not quality facilities but at the same time we also know not all of them provide the highest level of care and have the most skilled employees. PPE is in short supply and proper training and guidelines are hard to follow even for the most skilled frontline medical workers.

Even with PPE most people don’t use it properly....removing it, not washing hands, improper cleaning and reuse...

Enough rant. Time to focus on the good things that are happening and be hopeful for everyone to get though this safely.

Quoted from nwpinball:

The current death rate in the US is 4.5%. 1 out of every 22.22 people that get the virus will die from it, I'd still consider that pretty significant.

I think your math is wrong...3.1 million reported cases in US....135K deaths. That’s just under .5% fatality rate. At 4.5 we should all be scared. The numbers of new cases are going up because there is so much more testing. But the overall number of deaths are not going up proportionately. I agree the spread needs to be slowed. The fact is we are all going to be exposed to this virus wether we like it or not. It sucks because we still know so little about this virus. Why some people have little symptoms and others are severely affected. So far no scientific studies have figured this virus out. There are reports of people having caught it more than once. So who really knows if you build up antibodies against this. We are all being manipulated. And the truth is we really don’t know how accurate the numbers being reported are. They keep changing how the deaths are counted towards Corona. Throw the media in this and things are skewed even further. It’s hard to find good facts. One thing is I WILL NOT live in fear of this. Do we need to take precautions....yes.
We just don’t have enough GOOD data still to know how bad a threat this really is.
