Sickens me how some people politicize this situation. Never waste a good disaster. Misinformation, and half truths are the rule of the day. Good thing this is not actually WWIII. We could not possibly be in a situation with less responsible and reliable news and media in general. Listen to the scientists and the CDC, etc, but leave the opinion pieces out because all they are doing is trying to get an R or a D elected this fall through ugly spin. Put the MSLSD, CNN, Fox News, NPR and AOL down. Find out how you can help. If there is nothing you personally can do to help others; then STFU, distance socially and watch Disney Plus or the new season of Ozark.

Quoted from NicoVolta:

Are the masks helping, or is it the authoritarian restrictions? Or both?[quoted image]

I was just going through my workshop and came across two unused N95 masks. Seem like conflicting information on whether they are useful to the average Joe like me walking through the grocery store. I saw a bunch of people in regular old surgical masks today when I went to stock up.

Quoted from tiltmonster:

Longer not higher...

Actually both. The sun is higher in the sky in the summer. The closer to straight over head the higher the UV level. Clouds and the altitude also have a big effect.

Quoted from hAbO:

People that are sick or hurt aren't going to the hospitals because they fear they could get Covid. They are staying home instead of seeking treatment.

Anecdotally I've taken two people to the ER in the last month for stuff that has nothing to do with Covid. Also anecdotally I work at a huge workplace with thousand of people and know personally no one who has even had Covid let alone died. Many are teleworking and some are still on-site. The only person I know personally who died this year from virus was due to complications from the annual flu back in February (heck of a nice guy too).

The big difference right now for hospitals is the delay of elective surgery and also the lack of visitors making the parking lots look even more empty. I can tell you that the hospitals here in Central Florida are not crowded with Covid patients. Of course our county has not been a hot spot to say the least; 394 confirmed cases and 11 dead with 600,000+ people. That is 0.065% infected and 0.0018% dead.

The simple fact is that this is not black and white and a lot of overthinking is going on. Social distancing along with hand washing, sanitizing public areas and wearing masks are our first line of defense when you have to go out in public. This strategy definitely helps a lot, but nowhere close to 100% effective. You can get infected while practicing perfect mask wearing and hygiene and you and also spread it while doing the same. Conversely you can also take your chances and walk around wantonly with no mask and by simple dumb luck avoid ever getting infected. It is literally a crap shoot. The virus is tiny and gets carried randomly along with air movement in a room. One person could get a huge dose while another five feet away could get nothing. Basically I am saying not to read more to this than is actually there.

Masks and social distancing are the best we have until the vaccine(s) come out early next year. Though most of the masks people are wearing are not very effective or properly donned, they are better than nothing and definitely worth wearing in public. They help contain coughing and remind us not to touch our mouths and noses in public. Even if you don't think masks do anything, you should still wear one as a courtesy to others around you...and who knows, it might actually save your life or someone around you. Being a crap shoot, you can always roll snake eyes when you least expect it.

Personally I am very uncomfortable wearing a mask, but do so anyway whenever in public. The good side of this it that it actually keeps me from going out to crowded places as much as I normally would. For instance, I would rather order my groceries for home delivery than go to the store and wear a mask the whole time! My Amazon orders have gone way up and I am now a Sams Plus member to get free delivery. I'm also getting back into golf and other outside activities that don't require a mask all the time.
