Quoted from onemilemore:

Curious for the medical professionals in this thread to weigh in on vaccine approvals for under 12s and if they think it'd be safe to accelerate. I've seen the American Academy of Pediatrics call for EUAs to happen now, basically, and sending my 10 y/o to school every day...sucks, if we're being honest. It's scary right now.

It really shouldn't be scary. There is no rush to accelerate. Around 400 kids in a country of over 330 million have died from Covid. Most were before 12-18 year olds were getting vaccinated. Almost all had serious chronic medical issues. So the odds of a kid in the U.S. dying of Covid is around 1 in 1 million. Far less so if the are healthy. And about 100 to 1,000 times less than that if they are between 12-18 and vaccinated. Kids should be all going to school without masks. Their statistical odds are greater of dying in an auto accident on the way to or from school over the course of the year.

Quoted from PantherCityPins:

I would disagree with the maskless part of your statement. Yes, kids are less likely to have severe symptoms and die from COVID. Delta is a bit different and lots of pediatricians are seeing more severe symptoms and hospitalizations in kids now. Your stance also focuses solely on the kids while ignoring the teachers. Don’t they have a right to a relatively safe workplace? Lots of teachers have comorbidities and risk factors that make them high risk for severe symptoms, hospitalization or death from COVID. Studies show that kids over the age of 10 transmit COVID at similar rates to adults.

Actually, there is little evidence that the Delta variant is much different than other variants. The mortality rate, certainly, is no higher. And arguably, the mortality rate, with each passing wave is improving. To reassure you that school kids are safe, here is a well done study from the first wave of the virus, where arguably the mortality rate was at its highest. This is out of Sweden. During the course of the study, for 1.8 million school children going to school without masks, ZERO of them died. And teachers were shown to have less risk from Covid than most other professions (likely because transmission rates from children to adults is far less than from adults to adults):
