1) Do you have enough masks, gloves and hand sanitizer? Are home-made masksbetter than nothing? Here's an interesting article on various types of materialsand how well they block virus/bacteria particles.

2) How does a BiPAP machine differ from a the "ventilator" that we're hearing about shortages of in the news? My father had ALS and used a Trilogy BiPapwith a face mask (non-invasive), so I have some experience with that device (and 1 other brand I can't remember the name of). My understanding is that if he would have chosen invasive ventilation with a tracheostomy, he would have been kept on the same Trilogy ventilator. We returned his device to the VA Hospital because it was loaned to us, but I know that at the time you could purchase them online (I looked into buying a backup). Obviously they're not going to take them away from ALS patients, but I know some sleep apnea patients get prescribed BiPAPs (in addition to CPAPs). Could a CPAP machine be converted to a BiPAP machine? Or is the solution to just have the manufacturers ramp up production? On another note, I saw an article that showed where someone turned an Ambu Bag into a mechanized ventilator.

Thanks for taking your time to answer questions, and thank you and all your support staff for saving lives! My sister is a nurse in Minneapolis and while I wish she could stay quarantined and safe at home, she recognizes that she's got a job to do.

Thanks for the reply.

Another question I had was how many people does it take to care for an average COVID-19 patient or is there no such thing as an "average" COVID-19 patient (because of all the other issues: diabetes, heart conditions, etc)? The pictures I've seen from Italy just show room upon room of patients lying in beds, hooked up to ventilators and other medical equipment. Early on, I heard about it taking multiple respiratory technicians (3 was the number I heard) to "run/manage a patient on a ventilator". Are medical professionals (nurses, doctors, technicians) the choke point or ventilators? If we come up with enough ventilators, will we be able to re-assign other medical professionals to the job or maybe use trained/trainable personnel from the armed forces?

Without sounding too morbid, what's killing those who are admitted to the hospital with COVID-19? Is it pneumonia, ARDS, or some other pre-existing condition (diabetes, heart disease, etc)?

I think a lot of people are hoarding now because they don't know when they'll safely get back to a grocery store to get more food. Are you "social distancing" if you're roaming around a packed grocery store, looking for what's left on the shelves?

If you have the option in your area, look into grocery delivery or pick-up. My local store Woodmans has a pretty decent website for creating orders for pick-up, but right now (as expected) they are swamped with orders. Amazon Fresh, offers delivery, but I have not seen any open delivery dates this week. I'm guessing most services (delivery/pick-up) are swamped right now.

Hopefully the stores are able to ramp up employees and logistics, because that would really help to eliminate the chance for spread.

If someone called in to the Howard Stern show and said on-air the exact same things being said now in front of a podium, he or she would have been written off by everyone as a crazy person.

Quoted from swampfire:

Some positive news from Georgia. I think people are staying away from restaurants, even though they aren’t closed yet. After 8 days of eating at home, my wife and I went to our local Cuban restaurant at noon yesterday. Normally there are people lined up waiting for a table on Fridays. But there was only one couple in the restaurant besides us. We sat about 20 feet from them, and service was strangely normal (no changes to the menu, great service as always). I bought a $100 gift card on the way out. We were as careful as possible of course. We washed our hands coming in and leaving, and I washed my credit card when I got home.
I think people are getting hung up on this being an “all or nothing”. Yes, we should stay home as much as possible. But a 90% isolation approach is much better than ignoring the virus entirely.

So everyone should practice "social distancing" except when it's inconvenient or it gets a bit boring?

I wonder how that's going to work out for us?

Quoted from swampfire:

A month ago I was called “hysterical” for being concerned about hospital bed shortages. Now I’m being called out for not being perfect. We make a thousand decisions a week, and they won’t all be right. The good news is that we don’t all have to be perfect to make a difference.

It's not convenient for any of us to voluntarily miss out on all of the things we enjoy like going out to eat or play pinball on location. I don't blame you for wanting to do those things. I want do do those things too!!!

When you go out to eat at a restaurant, the waitstaff is within 2 feet of you (or closer) and is breathing all over you. And you and everyone else who's gone in to eat that day, are breathing over him/her.

People with flu can spread it to others up to about 6 feet away. Most experts think that flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/spread.htm

The flu virus might be spread not only by coughing and sneezing, but also simply by breathing, researchers say in a new report.

That may not sound surprising, but the common wisdom among flu experts has been that flu was not an airborne virus but only spread by fairly large droplets, from coughing or sneezing.

The new study found clear evidence that influenza patients breathe the virus out through their mouths and noses in tiny particles that can stay suspended in the air for minutes or hours.

Wow just read an article where some WV teens were going around to grocery stores and coughing purposely over the vegetables, video taping it and putting it online.
WTF can be running through their heads.....hope they get just desserts.

Terrible. Probably all for social media LIKES. So glad I grew up in the days of Compuserve and AOL and not today's gluttony of social mediawhoredom.

I hope they get NO desserts and are forced to live on a diet of only rotten & dirty vegetables.

Thankfully there are other youngsters that are setting a better example.

Two 20-somethings extend ‘invisible hands’ in virus outbreak

Liam Elkind’s big heart and his break from college was a highlight of 83-year-old Carol Sterling’s week.

The retired arts administrator has been sheltering at home during the coronavirus outbreak, unable to shop for herself. Yearning for some fresh food, she found the 20-year-old through their synagogue, and soon he showed up at her door with a bag full of salad fixings and oranges.

Elkind, a junior at Yale, and a friend, Simone Policano, amassed 1,300 volunteers in 72 hours to deliver groceries and medicine to older New Yorkers and other vulnerable people. They call themselves Invisible Hands, and they do something else in the process — provide human contact and comfort, at a safe distance, of course.

Quoted from RWH:BobSacamano After having a moment to think I'd like to apologize to you for having ripped you earlier in the thread. What I should have done is simply respect you have an opinion and the right to express it and Welcome you to pinside! I promise you most on here are not the asshole I was to you earlier, there are a lot of good people on here and at times like that we see it in full measure. Stay healthy my friend.

Apology accepted, but not necessary.

I'm just as scared and disappointed as you and everyone else is with this mess.

Where my fault lies, is that I'm a bit more angry and bitter at why we're here and what possibly led to that. But I guess that can be dealt with at a later time.

Thanks for the kind words.

We’re on the same side (concern). To be in solidarity with my friends in big cities where the SHTF moment is already here, I won’t go to another restaurant or other non-essential commercial setting until the danger has passed for everyone. Thanks for keeping me honest.

I'm not trying to be a dick and single you personally out. I'm sick of eating food from my "pandemic pantry". You can only eat Rice & Beans for so many meals until you want to barf. (Although I am thankful for what food I do have!)

I don't know what the correct information is for whether or not YOU personally can safely go out and eat right now. We are getting a mixed message on that. While I personally think you're less at risk if you live in a rural area versus living in New York, California or Washington cities, I can't confidently say that risk is ZERO.

We're told to social distance and stay inside, but we have to eat, so they say we can go to the grocery store and to the pharmacy. Have you been in a grocery store lately? It's wall-to-wall packed with people! You might as well be in a packed restaurant.

I apologize if you took that personally, as I'm just as frightened and frustrated as you are.

Maybe we're foolish to try to fight this? Just rip off the band-aid and let the pain hurt for a second instead of slowly peeling it off and enduring the pain for a drawn out period of time? A lot of us and our loved ones are going to die, but not everyone will die. The planet will still be here for us to pick up where we left off.

I don't know... CRAZY-F'IN-TIMES!

Watched a bunch of videos on making home-made masks for doctors/nurses.

A lot of them are just using cloth (napkins, sanitary pads, etc) as the barrier, and I doubt those are very good at stopping small bacteria/virus particles.

The ingenious ones are the people who are using furnace filters.

Here's another one that is a bit more "ghetto" (as the kids say these days), but still uses a re-purposed furnace filter.

Quoted from Frippertron:

My daughter came down with a cough and a fever over at the babysitters house, the other day. I had to call out of work and pick the kids up. Later that night, my wife gets a text from the babysitter saying that she will not watch the kids during the quarantine. My wife works in emergency medicine and I work in the oil and gas industry. All daycare places are closed. I have to apply for emergency leave. Daughter had a 24 hour virus and now I’m out of work for the foreseeable future.

On my local news, they were talking about how most daycare centers were closed BUT they also mentioned that a few more were open explicitly for taking care of children that belonged to VIPs like your wife. They did not give specifics, but it might be something to look into. What are her co-workers doing? Has her employer talked about providing on-site child care?

Evers also asked child care providers to prioritize families of health care workers and essential service providers, and he asked parents to stay home and care for their children if they're able to.

The state is also exploring ways to serve health care workers with on-site child care, according to the release.

Amundson said the agency is creating an online Find Care page that will connect families with providers, including idled workers willing to provide in-home childcare. National Guard volunteers could help set up and staff temporary child care centers if it comes to that.

Quoted from Utesichiban:

They are very concerned about the future and long term impact of global investment and manufacturing in their country right now due to the COVID situation and anger about how they handled it early on. As a result, they are doing everything they can to shift the blame for elsewhere.

While I definitely think China is not free of blame from their unregulated wild game markets, and their initial cover-up, I'm praying that the rest of the world doesn't fan the flames to a level where we get into an unnecessary conflict that will potentially lead to more lives lost.

Although War is usually good for the economy... so, maybe?

Are there different levels of suits? The look expensive, so I would imagine there aren't a ton of them just lying around. Are they single use or can you sanitize and re-use them?

arcademojo How practical would it be for your grocery store to close it's doors to the public, and ONLY take online orders and have grocery pick-up or delivery?

My local Woodmans grocery store has grocery pickup and it's a pretty nifty service, but as expected the wait times are a week or longer for pick-up.

I think once you get people hooked on online grocery ordering and delivery/pickup... you might really change how the grocery business operates.

I worked in a grocery store throughout school, and I personally love wandering the aisles looking at all the different choices. I sometimes still "face" the items while no one is looking or I wander around the store returning items that people randomly ditched from their carts. My Pet Peeve is when someone leaves a frozen or refrigerated item on a regular shelf to just spoil. I know from experience that potentially spoiled food probably has to just be thrown in the garbage at that point, and it's such a waste. That should be considered on par with shoplifting IMHO.

Stay safe, and thank you for your service!

Can we stop patting ourselves on the backs for "closing the boarders to China". That obviously did not work.

And it's just another LIE

February 24, meanwhile, was China’s deadliest day from COVID-19; if Beijing’s possibly suspect statistics are to be believed, 149 people died from the coronavirus on that day. That afternoon, an Air China 777 arrived at JFK after a 13-hour flight from Beijing. The following day, Los Angeles International Airport welcomed flights from both Beijing and Shanghai.

That the Trump administration “banned flights,” “closed the borders,” or “stopped flights” from first China and later the European Union to halt the spread of COVID-19 has become a staple of its defense of its response to the pandemic. But it simply isn’t true. At no time through the course of this awful period have flights even once been halted between either China and the U.S. or Europe — including even Italy — and the United States.

The Trump administration did impose travel restrictions between China and the U.S., and later Europe and the U.S., but both actions have loopholes large enough to fly a 777 through. In the case of China, on Jan. 31 — weeks after it was known that the coronavirus was a serious problem — the administration restricted travel for “foreign nationals who had been in China in the last 14 days.”

That means that Americans — just as capable as carrying and transmitting a contagious viral infection as foreigners — had free passage between China and the U.S. And so daily flights between China and the U.S. continued.
(And yes, even these limited restrictions were slammed as being too punitive at the time.)

The Trump administration’s alleged Europe travel ban, announced to much fanfare earlier this month, is similarly weak. It too exempts Americans from any restrictions whatsoever, and the screening that returning Americans have been subjected to at airports has been laughably weak. Passengers have been given a form to fill out (which many travelers have reported aren’t even being collected), waved through immigration, and then simply urged to self-quarantine. It’s like the honor system, but for containing a deadly pandemic.

PantherCityPins We've been told we're on day 7 of 15. What realistically happens on day #15? Will the curve be flat enough, so that we can resume our normal lives? We get reports from China that they're "going back to work", but without a vaccine or herd immunity, aren't they just as vulnerable as they were back in January before they quarantined 50+ million people?

Good news: 3M is delivering more masks!

Stock price currently at $124.89... will it rise?

In the U.S., we are producing 35 million respirators per month. More than 500,000 respirators are on the way to two of the more critically impacted areas, New York and Seattle, with arrivals expected starting tomorrow. Read full statement here:

Quoted from swampfire:

Here’s a sobering account from a 31-year-old nurse practitioner in Albany GA (my state).
“COVID19 is not like the flu...at all... How do I know? Because I’ve lived through it to tell the tale!
Memoirs of a 31 y.o. male with no underlying health conditions.
March 3, 2020-Bronchitis like illness started, dry cough, no fever
March 5, 2020-Low grade fever starts, still thinking bronchitis
March 6, 2020-Fever climbs from 99.8 to 102.6 in one hour, thought it was flu and was now outside the Tamiflu window, stayed home for symptom management.
March 9, 2020-Fever of >102 continues, this isn’t flu, go to urgent care, diagnosed with pneumonia, started on Levaquin.
March 11, 2020-3 doses of Levaquin in, no improvement in symptoms, go to ER. Admitted, swabbed for COVID19, IV antibiotics got pneumonia on chest CT.
March 12, 2020-Get to a room and placed on supplemental oxygen via nasal cannula, 1 liter per minute (lpm). I’m only able to achieve 500 on my incentive spirometer, for perspective-my healthy lungs could hit 4000.
March 13, 2020-O2 saturation begins to decline, oxygen increased to 2 lpm, then 3 lpm, then 5 lpm. Oxygen saturation 88% on 5 lpm. The decision is made to use high flow (vapotherm) and move to ICU. Placed on 40 lpm and 60% oxygen. I’m terrified at this point because vapotherm is all that is standing between me and the ventilator. This is the moment I would have died at home had I not come to the hospital when I did. I would have respiratory arrested in my bed.
March 14, 2020-I have a bad coughing spell, my oxygen saturation drops to the 80’s. I’m still on 40 lpm and 60%. I’m trying to gasp for air, but because of the condition of my lungs, can only take small breaths without coughing more. I feel as though I’m about to die, my heart is racing, oxygen still low, and I’m sweating profusely. Im in respiratory distress! I pressed my call light trying to get the attention of anyone who can help. My nurse was in another room tending to another sick patient. Fortunately he sees me and comes to my room. I am now on 40 lpm and 100% oxygen, next step is the ventilator. I’m terrified. My breathing slows as my oxygen saturation slowly returns to the 90’s. I’m weaned back down to 60%. The same thing happens again in the night, and again I thought I was about to leave this world. Again I’m on 100%, this time for several hours. I’m slowly weaned again to 60%.
March 15, 2020-My morning arterial blood gas (which hurts like a ) is normal. I get weaned to 50%.
March 16, 2020-My oxygen saturation is 97%, I’m weaned further to 30 lpm and 40%.
March 17, 2020-I’ve been in ICU 4 days, forced to use a bedpan because my oxygen saturation drops if I turn or even move too much. I am unable to clean myself; I’m feeling completely helpless and so embarrassed, but my nurses were great and very understanding. I now truly understand my patients’ feelings from all these years of nursing. I’m weaned to 25 lpm and 30%. I’m going to the medical floor.
March 18, 2020-I’m weaned to 28%. I can achieve 1500 on my incentive spirometer finally. I’m hopeful to be weaned to a regular nasal cannula. The provider comes in. I’ve been waiting for my swab results. I tested positive for COVID19...6.5 days of waiting for the outside lab to process the lab. I’m relieved because I finally have a diagnosis, a reason I’ve been so sick. I’m weaned to 4 lpm on a regular nasal cannula, 4 hours later I’m weaned to 2 lpm. 4 hours later I’m weaned to room air. My oxygen saturation stats 93% and above all night.
March 19, 2020-As I write this, I’m waiting to attempt a 6 minute walk test to see if my oxygen stays up, so I can go home. I’ve had no visitors this entire time due to my isolation precautions.
Guys, this is why social isolation is a thing. As a 31 y.o., I wasn’t supposed to get sick. I wasn’t supposed to be admitted to the hospital or the ICU for that matter. We’ve already had several deaths from COVID19 in this area. I thank God I wasn’t one of them! However, many won’t be as fortunate as I have been. Many will die, especially those with any lung or heart problems. So please, I beg you to #stayhome “

That scares the f#ck out of me. What's the co-pay on a visit like that?

We're only two/three weeks past being told that the "corona-flu" was just going to affect a minority of the population that was old and already sick.

Turns out that was another lie. Or maybe a "hunch" gone wrong? Alternative facts?

Looking ahead a bit, here’s my worry. We’ve heard very little about the long-term endgame for this war. We get a shot for seasonal flu, but the virus evolves so it’s not 100% effective. But the death rate is relatively low, so we accept that. If this CORONAvirus evolves and we get hit with another epidemic just as they’ve worked out the vaccine for the first one, are we going to be playing cat and mouse with this for the next 5, 10, 20 years? Is it a permanent part of our lives now?

God I hope not. Flu is bad enough as is. Although we have gotten better at hand washing...

Yeah, I kind of wondered about why they went from specific map points (cities) to just showing the numbers for an entire state. That happened a few weeks ago. Maybe it was to handle the load of requests they were receiving. Maybe it was an attempt to not cause people in specific cities to panic. Why did they suddenly revert it to the way it was? Did they increase server capacity to handle the increased load? Or was it to now maybe scare people into staying inside?

A UPMC doctor on Thursday made a case the death rate for people infected with the new coronavirus may be as low as 0.25% — far lower than the mortality rates of 2-4% or even higher cited in the early days of the pandemic.
https://www.pennlive.com/news/2020/04/umpc-argues-covid-19-not-as-deadly-as-feared-says-its-hospitals-will-shift-back-to-normal.html

Aren't there 2 different numbers here?

But the two numbers describe different things: The first is a case fatality rate, reflecting deaths among people with confirmed diagnoses of covid-19. The second is the infection fatality rate, extrapolated from the antibody surveys.

source: https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/antibody-tests-support-whats-been-obvious-covid-19-is-much-more-lethal-than-flu/2020/04/28/2fc215d8-87f7-11ea-ac8a-fe9b8088e101_story.html

It's important to note that there is no one death rate for COVID-19; the rate can vary by location, age of person infected and the presence of underlying health conditions, Live Science previously reported.

Among reported COVID-19 cases in the U.S., nearly 6% have died. This is what's known as the case fatality rate, which is determined by dividing the number of deaths by the total number of confirmed cases. But the case fatality rate is limited for a few reasons. First, not everyone with COVID-19 is being diagnosed with the disease — this is in part due to testing limitations in the U.S. and the fact that people who experience mild or moderate symptoms may not be eligible for or seek out testing. As the number of confirmed cases goes up, the fatality rate may decrease.

Researchers from Columbia University recently estimated that only 1 in 12 cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. are documented, which they said would translate to an infection fatality rate of about 0.6%, according to The Washington Post. But even this lower estimate is still at least six times higher than that of the flu. (The case fatality rate in people who become sick with flu may be 0.1%, but when you account for people who become infected with flu but never show symptoms, the death rate will be half or even a quarter of that, the Post reported.)

What's more, unlike the flu, for which there is a vaccine, everyone in the population is theoretically susceptible to COVID-19. So while the flu affects 8% of the U.S. population every year, according to the CDC, between 50% and 80% of the population could be infected with COVID-19, according to a study published March 30 in the journal The Lancet. In the U.S., that would translate to 1 million deaths from COVID-19 if half the population becomes infected and there are no social distancing measures or therapeutics, the Post reported.

Another limitation with the case fatality rate is that some people who are counted as confirmed cases may eventually die from the disease, which would lead to an increase in the death rate. For example, South Korea initially reported a case fatality rate of 0.6% in early March, but it later rose to 1.7% by the beginning of April, according to New Scientist.

I still don't understand the push for blanket COVID-19 testing of the general population.

You could go in to get a test today, test negative and then go out and contract the infection the next day (if you were exposed to someone who had the infection).

1. Unless you are severely ill, testing for COVID-19 does not change your treatment. Healthy people with mild symptoms will get the same advice as those who get the flu: stay home, stay hydrated, and take Tylenol. If you feel sick, prevent spreading your infection to others through self-quarantine for 14 days. Regardless of whether or not you may have a positive diagnosis of COVID-19, we can all do our part by practicing responsible social distancing.

2. Going to get tested could put you at risk for catching or spreading COVID-19. Patients are crowding waiting rooms to request testing, leading to a breakdown in social distancing that exposes more people to the spread of COVID-19. Even the test itself can spread infectious particles, as patients undergo the unpleasant process of having a nasopharyngeal swab stuck up their nose and often end up coughing or gagging.

3. Current tests can still miss infections. A recent study found that nasal swab testing in China missed 37% of COVID-19 cases, while throat swabs missed up to 68%. In the U.S., there are multiple different tests with varying degrees of accuracy, and the number of patients who test negative but actually have COVID-19 remains unknown. In the early stages of infection, it’s possible for your test to be falsely negative, which could lead to a false sense of confidence. A negative test does not change your risk of becoming infected, and everyone must continue to practice responsible health precautions.

4. In most regions of the U.S., COVID-19 is so widespread that testing is no longer helpful for containment. During the initial “containment” phase of an outbreak, testing is critical for finding isolated cases and tracking down contacts who may have been exposed. Done properly, like in South Korea and Singapore, early testing prevents an outbreak like COVID-19 from spiraling out of control. Unfortunately, our own efforts to ramp up testing have come far too late – we missed the opportunity to trace and contain COVID-19. Now that the coronavirus has become so widespread, social distancing, rather than testing, is the most effective strategy for fighting this pandemic.

5. Unnecessary testing could overwhelm our health care system and deprive resources from critically ill patients. As we face one of the most severe flu seasons of this decade, hospitals are already operating at close to maximum capacity. With impending shortages of beds, masks, and ventilators, it may only be a matter of time before American doctors are forced to make the same extraordinary rationing decisions being made by their Italian colleagues.

I'm sure hoping our 99.999% survival rate gets even better!

When you see the pictures of the ERs/ICUs/morgues from around the world, it's hard to argue that this is the worst virus we've seen in many years.

That said, if you don't live in a city like New York or Lombardy (Italy), that was hard hit, I can see how the reaction seems way overblown.

What really prevents Bumblef#ck, Idaho from becoming the next New York City? Much lower population density and the lack of public transit? I can't imagine the smaller hospitals could even support a handful of severe COVID patients.

#12775 3 years ago

After about 2 months in the US, we're not really any different than we were 2 months ago, are we? Outside of 60,000+ dead and the economy teetering on the edge of a cliff?

It's a highly contagious virus that will probably spread to the majority of the population. Hopefully, you're not in the small percentage of people who will need ER/ICU, because we don't really have clear-cut effective drugs or treatment at this point. We might get a vaccine, but that might be years from now and it's going to be very difficult to manufacture and distribute to the billions of people who would need it.

Women seem to be farting better then men.

In New York City, men have been dying of coronavirus at almost twice the rate of women. The city’s health department reported in early April that 43 COVID-19 deaths for every 100,000 men, compared with 23 deaths for every 100,000 women

“Some of the underlying reasons why COVID-19 may be more deadly for men than women may include the fact that heart disease is more common in elderly men than in elderly women,” Dr. Stephen Berger, an infectious disease expert and co-founder of the Global Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology Network (GIDEON), told Healthline. “Studies also find that high blood pressure and liver disease are more prevalent in men and these all contribute to more negative outcomes with COVID-19.”

Quoted from wrb1977:

That will never happen nor should it. There is no one size fits all solution for this. Even within our own country, what’s appropriate for New York and the surrounding areas does not make sense for many states which are not averaging even one death per day. With much of the country experiencing little to no issues with the virus, it is time those areas get back to normal. The rest of the country will soon follow in the coming weeks and people will have to do their own risk assessment to decide what is best for them. Everyone does this on a daily basis with all aspects of life, those decisions are not made for us nor should they be.

Agreed. A small town in Montona/South Dakota/Wyoming with zero confirmed cases is NOT Queens in New York City (with 4,000+ deaths in 2 months).

But what prevents the virus making it's way to and through the population of one of those small towns? There is no herd immunity, no vaccines, no historical antibodies through previous infections.

My neighbor told me a story from a friend who lives in a small town, that serves as a vacation spot. People started flooding in from the big cities to their cabins and brought the infection with them and then passed it on to the grocery store workers. It's just anecdotal, and maybe it didn't even happen exactly as he described it... but it could.

TLDR: Does the season flu / cold viruses usually skip small towns?

With all the "idiots" in the US I actually think we will see it getting worse than that. Too many people just are not taking this seriously! I just lost an Aunt on May 1st to Coronavirus and I am sure she will not be the last one we never get a chance to say goodbye to before this is over. THIS ISN'T THE FLU!

But I saw something on Youtube where 2 doctors sitting at a table say it was exactly like the flu. Then they went on Fox and repeated it.

Who to believe?!

After employees receive threats, one city is forced to nix rule requiring face masks in businesses

May 2, 2020

An emergency proclamation requiring face masks in stores and restaurants in Stillwater, Oklahoma, was nixed after store and restaurant owners received threats.

The proclamation was issued Thursday. Among other things, the order made businesses require patrons to cover their faces to combat the spread of coronavirus.

But on Friday, Mayor Will Joyce softened the rule to encourage, not require, face coverings, after several reports emerged of employees being verbally abused and being threatened with physical violence while trying to enforce the order — all in just three hours of the rule going into effect.

Quoted from wrb1977:

The USNS Comfort returned to Norfolk on May 2nd after completing its mission in New York. All of the initial goals have been accomplished and now it’s time for each region to begin the process of returning to normal. This virus is not going to be eliminated anytime soon and will remain part of our society indefinitely. We need to learn to live with it like we do other deadly contagious diseases such as the flu. This is NOT a flu argument it is a reality. We do not shut down the country every year for the tens of thousands that die every year from the flu.
Just for reference, an estimated 80,000 people died in the US during the 2017-2018 flu season. Sure this virus is worse, but NOT orders of magnitude worse. We did not close down the country, wear masks, etc. We as a country did NOTHING that disrupted our daily lives. We need to move on, get people back to work and minimize the number of businesses that closed and will never reopen.
Those that are elderly and at higher risk should take more precautions than someone who is young and healthy. But that should be left to each individual as they determine their own level of risk that they are willing to take.
We ALL assess risk everyday with all aspects of our daily life. Someone who is elderly with underlying health conditions should decide whether or not to wear a mask the same way they decide on their diet, whether or not they smoke or drink, exercise, etc. If someone is concerned they are going to get the virus from an individual not wearing a mask, then the concerned person can be the one to wear a mask or not go out at all. There is no reason that the frightened should ruin the lives of those who are not. I do not see people wearing masks each flu season and the flu IS deadly. The flu shot is usually only around 40% effective or so. Many people still do not get it even though it is readily available each year, that is their choice.
A few weeks ago I was all for everyone sitting on their couch, but things have changed and are improving. If we knew that sitting on our respective couches for a certain length of time would “fix” this, I would be all for it. This is clearly not the case. It is time we move on and people need to take care of themselves and assess their own risks.
One final note, my Mom is in her early 70s and has underlying health conditions. Once a week my wife and I drop groceries off on her back porch and hang out for a half hour or so keeping our distance from her of approximately 20ft. I am doing my absolute best to keep her from being exposed to this virus, I will leave it to her as to when she feels safe enough to give her son and daughter-in-law a hug again.

By your estimates, how many do you think will die this year from the Coronavirus?

#13123 3 years ago
Quoted from PantherCityPins:

People need to just stop comparing this to the flu. It’s NOT the flu. It is at least 3 times more
deadly and at least twice as contagious as the flu.
I also don’t understand why people are still posting heart disease deaths and car accident death stats. It’s apples and oranges. First of all you can’t compare a yearly heart disease death total to a 3 month COVID-19 total. Make the two stats over an equal timeframe before you try to compare. Secondly, so what? So because COVID-19 hasn’t killed 500,000 people in 3 months we shouldn’t care? The COVID deaths are in addition to all the other causes of death, not instead of. I wonder if a mass bombing happened and killed 80,000 Americans if these same people would be saying “Well hell, heart disease killed 600,000 last year so move on!”

It's because those are the exact lines being parroted by Fox News, AM radio and all the other usual suspects.

The severity of the virus apparently boils down to your media bias.

If you would have watched Fox News in 2014 you'd have thought it was the end of the world in the US because of the Ebola virus. We had what? 11 total cases and NO deaths?

Someone saved the video clips, if you don't remember or believe me...

If only they had the graphs that showed the annual number of deaths by heart attack, diabetes, or even the season flu, maybe they would have seen it differently?

Well it just blew our minds

Figments of our time
So it seems that our dreams will never come to be
How can such a stupid thing destroy humanity?
A few weeks till extinction and there's nothing we can do

There's no lesson to be learned
There's no one left to learn it

There are a lot of shady grifters coming out the woodwork to take advantage of the COVID-19 situation and make outlandish promises that they can't ultimately deliver on.

How Profit and Incompetence Delayed N95 Masks While People Died at the VA

Federal agencies have hired contractors with no experience to find respirators and masks, fueling a black market filled with price gouging and multiple layers of profiteering brokers. One contractor called them “buccaneers and pirates.”

Quoted from gweempose:

I was just out walking around the neighborhood with my wife and I was shocked to see two moms that I know walking together side by side with no masks. I honestly don't get it.

From the beginning, nearly everyone (including the doctor played by Brad Pitt) was saying that masks weren't necessary. Now, I understand that there was a real effort to preserve and prioritize Personal Protective Equipment for doctors/nurses/EMT/police/first-responders, but I think the early messages of "just wash your hands and you're going to be OK" didn't help us.

There's still no real unified message on wearing masks. The supposedly two most powerful people in the country refuse to, even in a hospital setting or when touring a mask making facility. What message does that send to the public?

Why not hire the Mythbusters to conduct a bunch of televised experiments to show what benefits (if any) wearing various types of masks have for both the wearer and the people who they share an enclosed space with?

How are people supposed to go back to eating at restaurants and drinking at bars wearing masks?

I'm seeing more and more masks every day, but it's around 5% of the people I see, and the vast majority in "essential" stores, are not wearing them.

We carry around powerful computers in our pockets and think nothing of it. Why can't we design and manufacture a piece of re-usable, daily-wear headgear that protects us when we're out in public around other people? You could throw in a speaker/voice-changer, an air-filtration system, headlamp, VR/AR display, etc. Maybe even a tube for drinking liquids?

Quoted from wrb1977:

This past Monday marked the 50th anniversary of the Kent State University shootings and was remembered by all of the major national news outlets. This tragic event took place on campus in Kent, Ohio on May 4, 1970. For those not familiar with this very tragic and very historic event, it’s worth learning about as it was a turning point in our nation in many ways...
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_shootings
The reason I bring this up...does anyone else feel that we may see another very tragic, symbolic, and historic event related to this pandemic here in the US?
Our nation is clearly divided as to how we handle this with both sides having completely legitimate arguments. I feel that this division, along with the rising number of infections and deaths, rising unemployment, business closures, financial hardship, freedoms threatened, people’s general way of life threatened, and rising emotions the longer this continues, will eventually boil over and culminate when these two sides clash. With many lives affected either by the death of a loved one or financial ruin, I think it is inevitable. I hope and pray I’m wrong.

If we do...

The last time I checked, there's only one side showing up with assault rifles, and a very specific person is egging them on.

IIRC you are retired and run an Ebay arcade parts store. So hiding at home is easy for you.
Over 50% (give or take a few) of Americans live pay check to pay check. Many here in PA are still waiting on their EC checks to start. Many self employed, subcontractors, small business owners are getting nothing. I personally know many. Many have burnt through what little they have saved, many are racking up credit card dept. And many are on the verge of losing their businesses. They are at the point of no return. So who are you to call people "crazies" ???????? I got to say I really love the name calling that's been going on in this thread just because people don't have the luxury to hide at home of have different opinions.
I do agree the worst is yet to come. It will happen this fall. It's unavoidable unless everyone stays at home for the next year until there is a rock solid vaccine. Unfortunately most people simply can't do that and the government simply can't keep handing out money until the country goes broke. Quoted from Bryan_Kelly:

Just some random thoughts:
I've found myself trying to be less judgmental over the last couple of months. I'm not sure if it's working or not. I don't believe there is one right or wrong way of dealing with all this. Even five years from now, I don't think we'll look back and know exactly what should or shouldn't have been done.
My wife and I were on our daily walk yesterday and saw 12 college aged kids having a pool party. Our governor has removed the stay at home order as of midnight Sunday night, which will allow gatherings of ten or less people. Some would freak out at what we saw. Not sure why. They're partying two days earlier than they should and does it really matter that there's 12 kids instead of 10? Funny though, I still viewed them as ones who couldn't care less about any of this.
A guy posted on a neighborhood app looking for locations that require masks in order to enter. He wanted to stay away from them. He doesn't believe he should have to wear one. He had to take his son to the dentist. He was required to wear one in order to enter. He said he was glad his son was old enough to go by himself because he himself was not going in. While trying not to be judgmental, I wanted to slap him upside the head and tell him to just put the f'ing mask on for the hour or so his son would be there.
My wife and I are 65 years old and still don't feel comfortable going into a store. We use curbside pickup or deliveries. After seeing the packed parking lots at various stores and hearing the stories of masks, no masks, some social distancing, some not, I feel good about our decision but wonder how long we will continue this.
Our son finally brought his two boys over. They've been over a few times in the last two months but stayed in the truck while we visited. They used our back yard to play baseball while my wife and I watched from the deck. We wanted to have them inside. Can't do that just yet. Gordon is a diabetic which concerns us all. His mother, my son's ex, is an ICU nurse at a local hospital. That concerns us. Like I said, we're 65.
Our daughter started taking her 2 kids back to daycare a week ago. We don't know what to think of that. As badly as we want to see them, that concerns us. We've also been to their place a couple of times in the last two moths but stayed in the car while visiting. Hayes, the 3 year old, wanted a hug and when told we couldn't give him one, started to cry. That made my wife cry.
I've unfollowed a couple of good friends on Facebook. I understand both sides of the open up, keep things closed argument, but if you're going to shove either side down my throat by posting constant stories one way or the other, you're not a friend. It's no different than religion or politics.
So many armchair quarterbacks that seem to know what we should or should not be doing. So easy to have an opinion when you're not the one who has to make critical decisions.
Someone recently commented about why sports are not important at a time like this. I get it but it made me angry. We have MN Twins season tickets. We love baseball. I doubt we'll be seeing a game this year. I went to 27 of them last year. I'm really going to miss it. Am I selfish?
So many other thoughts but I'll be done for now.

That's rough.

How about a "hug curtain"?

I do miss handshakes, high fives, hugs, and handjobs.

Due to sport injuries and age, I had become accustomed to therapeutic massage on a semi-regular basis. I would also use home remedies in between sessions and now with isolation, I have gone to them exclusively.
A foam roller and "The Stick" do really well for me and I hope you find the attached pictures helpful and self explanatory. You can also find a ton of video instructions on the internet.
Maybe pinball related, maybe not, but one issue I had was tendonitis at the elbow in both arms. It wasn't pictured on the instruction chart but I devised a way of laying on the floor and pinning The Stick with my body weight on my arm. By placing it directly on the tendon, beginning at the joint, I slowly rolled the tendon out by gliding my body over it lengthwise. Man, did that ever work great and in short order.
In fact, all of these exercises gives me great relief and they're easy to do.
I hope everyone finds that useful and a nice break from the political undertones that dominate this thread.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]

Did you ever try the "Flexbar" (by Theraband) for your elbow? I have one sitting on my desk, but I don't use it regularly. It's supposed to be pretty good for "tennis elbow" and general elbow pain.

Good stuff. I do a ton of rehab/prehab stuff nowadays, because when I was younger I sat in front of a desk for 10-12 hours a day (forward head, rounded shoulders, anterior pelvic tilt) and then spent the next 2 hours trying to lift really stupid amounts of weights in the gym. How and why COVID-19 mutates, and what it means for the future:

#14351 3 years ago
Quoted from PantherCityPins:

Well, the weight loss is due to him being in ICU on a vent for several weeks which was due to COVID so while dramatic weight loss isn’t associated with the milder forms of COVID it certainly can happen like this in patients who get very ill.

I wonder if he was taking TRT or steroids?

I've seen some studies and hypotheses that high testosterone has a negative effect on the outcome of infected males.

According to some people, these deaths are just a "Grand Conspiracy to Make Voldemort Look Bad"?

UK - 37K
Italy - 33K
Spain - 29K
France - 28K
Brazil - 22K

It would have been an interesting experiment to "split off" into two parallel timelines, one where the world didn't shutdown (schools, workplaces, churches, sports, public gatherings, etc) and one where we did, and then compare the two outcomes.

Oh wait... that's what we're doing now.

What makes you so damn sure Carlisle, Ohio can handle a Coronavirus surge? I can't believe the in-credulousness of some people who continue to think that this is something that's just affecting "old people". Unless you're in your 20s and in pristine health, I wouldn't be so damn cocksure. Turn off Hannity for a few minutes, and go read the testimonials of the ER doctors and nurses who are dealing with this on a day to day basis, and are refuting the myth that this is just killing grandma in the nursing home.

Young and middle-aged people, barely sick with covid-19, are dying of strokes
https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/04/24/strokes-coronavirus-young-patients/

"But it appears as though new data from the CDC shows one in five individuals hospitalized due to COVID-19 are aged 20 to 44. Moreover, about 12 percent of intensive care unit admissions are people 20 to 44."

Coronavirus sickening young adults, children: We are learning 'that everyone is at risk'
https://www.foxnews.com/health/why-young-adults-children-falling-ill-coronavirus

How many ICU hospital beds do you have in Carlisle, Ohio? Around 200 in all of Montgomery County? Did you ever stop to think what happens when those start filling up?

We've essentially hid from the virus for the past 2 to 3 months in the US. The virus hasn't magically disappeared. We could just as easily face the same situation we were facing back in February when we had 15 known cases and zero deaths. Those 15 cases didn't just disappear, as some predicted they would. Instead were here in May with over 1.6 million cases and closing in on 100,000 deaths. I think most experts would agree that the only reason we've seen a decrease in the overall daily death rate is because of our extreme quarantine measures. What do you think the logical outcome of lifting those restrictions will be?

I don't believe scientists or doctors! I prefer to get my "FACTS" from Q, Twitter, Facebook and OANN / Fox News "commentators".

“So overall it seems likely that while a few individuals who would have died anyway are getting called COVID deaths, there are [many] more deaths caused by COVID that are not being attributed to COVID,” Lipsitch said. And it is “simply not true that anyone who dies of something other than a car accident or gunshot wound is attributed to COVID.”

I have a friend in the hospital with Covid right now. My age - mid 50's, was being careful, masks, distancing, etc - but, was watching his grandkids over the summer. Believes he caught it from them, they were asymptomatic.

That's just the thing... At this point you're just throwing a set of dice if you catch this. There is someone out there who was younger and "healthier" than you (on paper) who is now dead from this stupid virus.

Until we know why that is, I'm taking this shit seriously.

My wife still gets 1 mask a week (that is intended for single use) and is lucky to have it. She has to bring her own cleaning supplies some days to wipe down door handles and the like.

It's inexcusable that after 7 months into this, we don't have adequate protective equipment or cleaning supplies.

#17742 3 years ago

If everyone treated this seriously for 2 to 3 weeks and wore a mask out in public and made an honest attempt at "6 feet" social distancing... wouldn't the virus just die out and we'd be back to "normal"?

(Until the next inter-species virus or Mars finally attacks...)

Starting Aug 12, masks will be mandatory in Walmart across Canada. Curious to see how they implement this. Are they going to have a security guard at each store? Is there a more standup guy than Faucci?

I hope I'm that badass when I'm 80!

Fauci dismisses Tucker Carlson's criticism but says it may inspire threats from 'crazies'
https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/512144-fauci-dismisses-tucker-carlsons-criticism-but-says-it-may-inspire-threats

Edgers went on to list some of the criticism from Carlson, who has called Fauci a "fraud" and a "chief buffoon of the professional class."

"Does it bother you? On a humane level, do you feel threatened or concerned when you see that kind of thing floating out there?" Edgers asked Fauci.

"I'm not concerned about what he says," Fauci said. "It's a little bit - I think you could say that when he does that, it triggers some of the crazies in society to start threatening me, actually threatening, which actually happens.

"I mean, who would have [guessed] when I was in medical school doing things to save people's lives, I'd have to be going around with a security detail?" he continued. "That's really ridiculous."

Quoted from Who-Dey:

I just think that this isn't as serious as alot of people thinks it is and I personally believe that this is being hyped up more than it needs to be for political purposes. That does not mean that i do not think it is serious because i do or else i wouldnt protect myself as much as i do, but im not so scared that i wont get out of my house because of it either. I do stay at home more that i used to and i do curbside pick up for my groceries but if i need to run into a store i will and i still go to work everyday too of course.
As far as the numbers go i just do not believe the numbers are accurate, and that is nothing more than a gut feeling. I have heard so many crazy stories about deaths being labeled covid 19 that isn't true, some of them even from people that are in my circle of friends and it just makes me not believe the numbers. I 100% believe that there is a lot that we dont know about this and i also believe that we are being fed a bunch of lies by our government and the media. I am sure that you probably do not agree with me and thats ok. It doesn’t make me think you are an idiot and it shouldn’t make anyone think that i am one either. The reality is though that you stand a very small chance of catching this and a extremely small chance of dying from it. A huge percentage of the deaths have been in the nursing homes and not out in the general public. Yes any deaths suck but my point is, your chances of dying from this are almost zero if you are a healthy person. If you aren't healthy then i would say by all means protect yourself big time and be smart! All i can say is wear your mask, stay away from people as much as possible, wash your hands, and go on about your life as best you can. Living like this SUCKS and i hope one day this will be a thing of the past.
Bottom line is there’s something fishy going on here folks and none of us know the real truth.

There's a worldwide conspiracy between reporters, doctors and scientists to commit medical billing fraud, because your buddy says so?

The VAST majority of reporters, doctors and scientists all believe that the numbers are under-reported, but hey... WHAT DO THEY KNOW?!

https://lmgtfy.com/?q=covid-19+deaths+underreported

Good for you for taking your health seriously though. Hope to see you on the other side of this.

Apparently children don't spread the virus.

“Can you ensure Dr. Fauci indicates masks are for the teachers in schools. Not for children,” Alexander wrote. “There is no data, none, zero, across the entire world, that shows children especially young children, spread this virus to other children, or to adults or to their teachers. None. And if it did occur, the risk is essentially zero,” he continued — adding without evidence that children take influenza home, but not the coronavirus.

Went out to grab some stuff yesterday, and hit the Super Target in an area closer to Daditude’s side of town. I go there b/c since March/April I have seen total compliance with the mask mandate and no overcrowding issues. Not yesterday. For the first time. It was overpacked, a ton of families with all the damned kids everywhere, and masks were half-assed. People with them pulled down under their chin, several people that would just hold it up to their mouths as you got near them, some just had them hanging off their ears. It’s a damned shame, but the numbers are clearly about to go up again. Here we go.

I've been using home delivery and contact free pickup for nearly everything since March. After you get the hang of it, I wonder if I'll ever go back to wandering around store aisles again? I would have done just fine in the days of the milk man and Sears and Roebuck.

My sister is a nurse on a floor with COVID patients. I hope 9 months was enough time to ramp up production on N95 masks!?

I can't order them online, but I did get some Korean K95 ones. Hope they aren't counterfeit...

I have tried to purchase Lysol wipes unsuccessfully for the past 9 months. Anyone have any luck? Are people using them as toilet paper?!

Hope your test comes back negative and hope your symptoms stay mild!

My neighbor let his grown son quarantine with him (away from his newborn son and wife) after catching COVID at work. My neighbor got sick with cold symptoms and recovered a few days after his son recovered. The son tested positive at doctor's office ($300 covered by insurance), but the dad's test result at a free outdoor site, came back negative.

Testing seems unreliable in his case, but maybe he was tested too early?

People will never get on the same page Rob. Some people are furious over these masks. I have a cousin that has been ripping my ass big time because I wear a mask.
He says out of all the people that he knows, he thought i would be the last person to be a damn sheep and buy into this bullshit. I told him that the biggest reason that I wear one is out of respect for other people, especially the elderly.
He is literally furious about this whole coronavirus thing and the masks. I swear hes about ready to go off the deep end over it, thinks it's no more than a cold etc. I'm like dude just wear a f*cking mask, it's not a big deal. He says I am a sheep and he cant believe I am bowing down to all these lies and that I should be embarrassed lol.

Maybe he's trying to set himself up to inherit your pins!?

This is an interesting timeline of when and who he could have infected.

The debate moderator says Trump showed up too late to be tested before the debate:

https://news.yahoo.com/trump-not-tested-covid-before-presidential-debate-chris-wallace-210418307.html

Hard to say that it looks like they were taking any of this seriously until Trump caught it and needed hospitalization.

Trump's doctor dodges several of the reporters questions:

That's sort of different from this news report:

"The president’s vitals over the last 24 hours were very concerning and the next 48 hours will be critical in terms of his care. We’re still not on a clear path to a full recovery," a White House official said in a statement provided to the press pool."

It's anyone's guess as to the Presidents real health status, as it appears the White House is staging publicity photos of the President signing blank papers and staging him in 2 different outfits only 10 minutes apart (exposed by EXIF timestamps in the digital photos).

Very odd, but I guess understandable due to national security concerns.

This wouldn't surprise me at all. Colder weather, get together's, flu and allergy season, and people just not caring anymore are going to make this rough sledding.
I went to Walmart with my daughter today. We both wore masks. There were 3 guys in front of us with no masks. The check out guy had his mask below his nose. The other Walmart worker by the counter had his mask pulled down as well.

Some of this blame has to lay strictly lay on the mixed messages being given by the US President, something some of us have been saying since Day #1 (and getting censored/banned for)?

#19574 3 years ago

If you get antibodies from a treatment (plasma) instead of your own body generating them, how does your immunity differ?

The president claims he's now "immune", but he received Regeneron and the antibodies in his system may be from the therapy and not his own.
