Quoted from o-din:

I have found staying hungry throughout this stay at home ordeal has not only made me feel healthier, but also is showing great improvement at my waistline.

It is good to fast for a day or even 2. Lot of water, coffee , orange juice. I personally feel very good afterwards...

Ok guys, too much political BS and not enough coronavirus talk.
I'm out.

Thanks for the info you provided, just a shame that the usual suspects that politicize everything ruined it for you.

Quoted from Reality_Studio:

Yup, I'm a Canadian. Long story short when I moved to the USA I had zero medical debt, zero school debt, zero debt period. The poor locals couldn't wrap their head around that concept as it seems like most Americans are drowning in some form of debt. Ironically even with all that debt, my schooling was better than theirs having done stuff like Calculus in high school. It made getting a job down here quite trivial.

Quoted from albummydavis:

Why did you want to move to such a shitty country?

Quoted from Who-Dey:

They started it and we will finish it.

Maybe take a walk or jog in place for a bit. Deep breaths. Seriously.

I agree with you, Doc. But I do have a question I've been thinking about and I wanted to run by you. I helped a buddy restore an Eight-Ball recently. He bought some N95 masks for the job (of cabinet sanding). I saved one mask for myself to use for the upcoming yard cutting season. I have been thinking I might wear that to the grocery store next time I have to go. The last time I went, I wore latex gloves and threw them away afterwards. Now, for the N95 mask, could it be reused after a grocery store trip? Say spray it with peroxide after the trip. Seems like washing/rinsing would mess it up. Can the N95 be reused for a limited use and be cleaned like this or should it be trashed?
Thanks for being the reason I've been keeping up with this thread since it has spiraled into a train wreck.
Cheers!

That's because I'm tired of all the BS. It is what it is and I'm not changing for anybody. I never have and never will take shit off of people and the older I get the more I hate stupid people.

330 posts since my last visit.

Amazing how all of our troubles have been replaced with this virus.

1) Global Warming? What's that?

2). Air pollution has magically disappeared from the lexicon.

3) Were there some riots in Hong Kong not to long ago?

4) high gas prices.

5) Carbon footprint? The airliners are flying the heavy jets at 20%-30% capacity. That's a lot of wasted carbon.

6) Will I get a government check for not being able to work?

I suppose there are other items that have been kicked off the front pages, but these are the ones I can think of.

Quoted from PantherCityPins:

I don’t expect that the PPE shortage will last much longer. I also think you underestimate the caliber of people that go into healthcare. Especially in the hospital environment it really becomes a family and you stay in there for those around you.

Lots of countries short on the PPE stuff. The US will probably come out OK, but it sucks to be in this situation in the first place. We should be better prepared. If only we could shoot or nuke the virus, we'd be so much better prepared.

It sounds like a bit of hubris to me. You have a 90-year-old infected patient with fluids coming out of all orifices. Your PPE is essentially garbage bags. You're going to endanger yourself and your entire team to save this person? For your/their sake it is stupid. For your/their family's sake, it is stupid. For your next patient's sake, it is stupid.

Somewhere in this mountain of a thread. There is a link to an article that said you can place the mask in an oven set to 158 degrees for 20 minutes and it will kill any virus. That is what I now do with the three I have.

The N95 respirator is a filter. You can kill the virus, but it still has mass. That doesn't go away.

Some may get ill. In general though people who devote that much time and training to help others don’t slink off in the corner and quit when the shit hits the fan. I can tell you from personal experience we’ve had multiple specialist docs asking how they can help out. Hell, we even had a neurosurgeon offer to mop the floors because he didn’t want to sit on his butt while others did the dirty work. True story.

That is cool. If I ever need my cranium worked on. I want this guy to do it.

#4565 4 years ago

So today, we have a National Story of a Quarantine possible for the North East.
Maybe only 2 weeks.
So I can sleep better. Which Direction are we heading, from the top?

Are we United in Quarantining, and using methods seen in South Korea and Singapore,
or are we done, and its open season?

Zero Criticism here...Just looking for the same answer since January. It changes often,
and Im unsure.

Sometimes you have to be blunt about this social distancing.

This is the truth. Theres a guy I work with that has always been one to invade your personal space I guess you would say. I've told him and told him to keep his distance from me and to please get out of my face. I actually yelled at him today and told him to get the f out of my face. Hes so f'ing stupid though that I doubt that he will stop doing it. Such a f moron!

Der Komboverfuhrer is telegraphing a federal quarantine of NY. If you have the means to get the f out, I would probably do so.

#4569 4 years ago

N95 really should be single use. That is not the world we live in now.

Don’t touch the outside of it with dirty hands/gloves.

Definitely don’t touch the inside.

Make sure it fits properly (shave the quarantine beard).

Reuse.

Magic number hospitals seem to be using is 1 week...but I suspect it is due to the scarcity.

At my wife’s clinic they are now down to 1 gown and 1 mask per day. EMT get homemade masks. Soon my wife will be getting plain surgeon masks. Save N95 for hospital intubation.

The bickering in this thread has seriously taken away from its intent.

I’ve been reading about the EMT and fire department personnel in NYC and how many of them are ending up sick. What happens when their numbers fall off? Same with hospital personnel. This has the potential to become a much bigger tragedy than what we are already seeing.

Florida is doing it now also. Should have saved the link but didn't.

Latest report is that coronavirus affects males more than females. They are also starting to see some of the long term effects for recovered patients. Here’s one of the first photos of one of the Wuhan patients that has recovered and showing the side effects.

Quoted from mcluvin:

The N95 respirator is a filter. You can kill the virus, but it still has mass. That doesn't go away.

Considering Coronavirus face mask shortages, scientists from Stanford have conducted a study confirming that the N95 masks can be decontaminated in a domestic environment. They suggest that leaving the mask in a regular kitchen oven at 70C/158F for 30 minutes will efficiently sterilize it. Therefore, the masks are suitable for reuse.
In their research, the Stanford scientists have also considered other methods of sterilizing N95 masks. They have tested UV light exposure for 30 minutes, alcohol soaking, and chlorine-based disinfection. While these methods do decontaminate the masks, they significantly reduce the filtration efficiency. The researchers are certain that to be useful, a sterilizing method “must eliminate the viral threat, be harmless to end-users, and retain respirator integrity”.

Being in a hospital working with the sick and going to the store are entirely two different things.

well yeah, which is why you really don’t need the N95 to begin with. Surgical mask would suit grocery shopping just fine.

Edit; working at the store is a different beast obviously.

We’ve been fed the bullshit that we are better than everybody else since birth, and for many people the idea that we are in fact worse than others at many, many things is simply something they will never be able to accept.

It’s too bad, because we could learn a lot.

#4589 4 years ago

I always find it humorous when someone calls someone stupid. Truth is if that person calling people stupid was actually the stupid one they wouldn’t have the IQ to figure that out.

Thanks for that. Everytime I see an act of kindness or sacrifice - like this - or volunteerism I get misty. So many good people in the country!

And so many losers that make me cringe and want to curl up in a ball. Or conceal carry.

one thing that gets me is the math looking at the global numbers:
Deaths: 30,835
Recovered: 141,468
So of all the people that got Coronavirus to the point where they have been tallied and are now through with it, 17.9% have ended in death.

We are pretty early into it in a lot of areas, however. I would consider it inconclusive.
