Quoted from russdx:

Why has the UK got such a high death rate? 17k cases and 1k deaths that’s insane yet the state’s has like 100k cases and 600 odd deaths?

You can't really go by the numbers - sounds odd to say...

But the problem is a) differences in amount of testing as well as who is getting tested b) people dying who were not tested/confirmed

Each country is kind of doing their own special math...

Quoted from OLDPINGUY:

An Argument all week, has been issues of blame on Governors.
It has been their Responsibility, not the Federal Govt.
First, was Production Act, The decision Not to use,but put on Standby, to Motivate,
Now is covered by it being used.
The Need for quarantines, was up to Governors, Not a Federal decision, sometimes arguing it was unconstitutional.
So from the same source, Newscorp, and for Some that IS the Wall Street Journal, New York Post,....
Now shares this headline:
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-mulls-imposing-coronavirus-quarantine-on-new-york-new-jersey-connecticut
Please help me, How can he consider doing this with the Powers he has, but spend a week, with
his media arm saying, he cant, he shouldnt, and any failures belong to the state.
Is this under the deceleration of National Emergency?
What does it mean to New Yorkers, and NJ, and CT?

Legally he has very broad authority. Mostly under commerce clause.

Practically....

Per capita, every other major city would likely look as bad as NYC if they had NYC testing numbers. It’s ridiculous

#4455 4 years ago

I can’t recall which article it was that I was reading.....1918 Spanish Flu decreased in its deadliness the longer it went on. The article said that people who got it later had milder symptoms and was less likely to die from the disease. And it had nothing to do with advancements in care treatments at the time.

In addition the GB hospitals are usually allready over capacity during normal flu season and BoJo was one of the Deniers if I recall correctly.

How are you guys in Michigan?

Surprised he’s being so flippant here and picking the usual petty fights. Michigan is a swing state.

Usually this treatment is just reserved for places like New York, California, and Washington.

No, the death count per million in NY is far higher than other states. Definitely an outbreak in NYC.

I can’t believe there’s still people who think bleating “fake news!” is in any way clever, or bolsters any kind of argument.

I miss actual discussion but people seem to be lazier than ever.

I miss actual debate.

The only debate you can have is Economy vs. Health, in wich everybody will sooner or later stick to the latter as soon as a relative, friend or colleague dies.

Edit: Oh, ok, and about your President, but that is forbidden by forum rules.

Florida received 100% of requested supplies...Why? Swing State, New Home state?
Sad to see this politicized, and defended.

#4464 4 years ago

New York's population density makes it a particularly nasty petri dish.....
Utah has 600 cases now at 3,000,000 pop SLCounty where the pop density is the highest has the most cases: (276 cases) though summit county(127 cases) where Park City(pop 8,000) is, has a large outbreak which doesn't correlate with the population.....but Park City is a Ski town which actually has a large population density on main street. not to mention a large service industry that lives in the county.

California has 4,000 cases at 30,000,000 pop. this is actually a lower infection rate than Utah.

Kiss ass governor and gotta keep the base alive.

A family friend went through a coronavirus checkpoint today returning from out of state. They didn't even check his ID.

Social Isurances, healthcare and free education help everybody and strengthen the system.
Better education = better jobs = more money = more taxes
Less poverty = less criminals = people feeling safe = less guns = less people shot dead

Pretty much.

Also, I think most people have no clue what socialism is...and most of them are the ones railing against it.

Most people have no clue what equality is, because they’ve never seen it.

Our news shared "All out of State Plates will have drivers/travelers screened before driving into the state.
Maybe next week, but it sounds more like a Political Sound bite for half the state.

The Villages...The senior community with golf carts, and a super high rate of HIV, is a microcosm of bad
behavior, based on political info, in the state.

Quoted from Gunnut40:

GM making ventilators so quickly is scary. They will have to bipass a lot of quality checks to roll these out this soon. I have a question for pinball_gizzard. If we had all the machines to keep people alive. Would we have enough properly trained people to use them correctly?

Yes and no. We have enough ICU docs and respiratory therapists to manage the load I would think. The problem will be trained ICU nurses.

My answer on all this, check back in a week. New Orleans? NYC is on top of testing and identifying covid people. As other cities get there it’ll even out. Population density is an issue more there as well as international travel but big cities will look fairly similar eventually.

Some may get ill. In general though people who devote that much time and training to help others don’t slink off in the corner and quit when the shit hits the fan. I can tell you from personal experience we’ve had multiple specialist docs asking how they can help out. Hell, we even had a neurosurgeon offer to mop the floors because he didn’t want to sit on his butt while others did the dirty work. True story.

#4484 4 years ago

I just woke up to find I have a highlighted post. And they are now serving ice water in hell.

And since the advent of this virus, there is at least one death toll that has been dramatically reduced.

The horses at Santa Anita.

For your sake I wish you‘re right but I wouldn‘t believe it. You‘d need 5% of your populations ICU beds and ventilators over 6 months, while each bed is occupied for about 3 weeks - if you don‘t „flatten the curve“.

That sounds great and all, but when you don't have the equipment to do it safely and you have a family to consider, I think your gonna see some folks rethinking that.

Beds are an issue for sure but the question was people to man them.

I don’t expect that the PPE shortage will last much longer. I also think you underestimate the caliber of people that go into healthcare. Especially in the hospital environment it really becomes a family and you stay in there for those around you.

#4489 4 years ago

When the sudden hot and dry weather in So Cal causes the number of new cases here to be reduced, who's going to take credit for that?

#4490 4 years ago

Scary read but also an oddly reassuring one. Good to know that in the labs much work is being done. I can only wish them success.

I really really want you to be right on the PPE.

Agree to a point on second part. I think it is far more likely for healthcare workers to start dropping from sickness and exhaustion than a mass walkout.

Related note:

My Aunt is a hospital admin in another state. She has a suspected case. Pending result. Uncle runs the labs. He is required to still work until he shows symptoms. I am fuzzy on symptoms required for him to stay home. He wants to work and is taking it as “I work until I drop”. That is the attitude of several of his colleagues as well. “I help those in the beds until I am in one of those beds”.

For me, it seems at some point that this well meaning attitude does more harm than good. It also seems like the hospital should try and save the staff from themselves and not encourage this behavior, but I am on the outside looking in on this one.

Here, we aren’t at that point. If I get it, my wife goes into quarantine too. They have said that is subject to change though.

My buddy said he will be over at 4:20. I told him we can practice social distancing if he brings his own pipe.

What those people don’t realize is when it comes to the subject of life and death they have just lost all credibility for their lifetime. I mean going forward how could I actually take the fake news crowd seriously on any issue. I can’t. They are either completely dumb or so weak minded they follow a cult of personality like cult members do.

Sometimes you have to be blunt about this social distancing.
