Quoted from tiltmonster:

Masks are meant to prevent your potential infected droplets spreading to others, your hand and eyes are more of a concern of contracting the virus.

That's the trick though - imagine everyone wearing masks, healthy or not, to prevent spread of infected droplets - that would help the greater population, right?

#4352 4 years ago

Half the people I've seen wearing masks aren't even wearing them right. Save them for people who actually need them.

I would think it would help somewhat. Of course, if they are worn incorrectly...there would be little (if any) benefit. From what I understand, proper handwashing and not touching your face are the most effective things.
I would think it would be more helpful to keep it from spreading to others (if a carrier were wearing a mask properly), than healthy people wearing them.

PantherCityPins (a.k.a. The Doc) is the real expert, however.

Just curious, but what is everyone doing on this shut-in Friday night??

I'm watching a movie with my kiddos. We ate dinner together earlier (a real rarity, unfortunately), and played dominos as well.

When the kids go to sleep, I have Ozark season 3 in the queue to watch on Netflix with the wife. Season 3 dropped today! Yeah!

Of course wearing a mask will protect you better than not wearing one. The narrative that it won’t help a healthy person was put out there because they need the masks to go to hospital workers. Since the masks are sold out and all newly produced masks are going to the government, this is less of an issue now.

My friend who is a nurse, said that the hospital he worked at would not let him bring in and use his own masks from home. He quit because of that among other safety concerns and now works somewhere else. I found a few masks in my garage I got a few years ago. I gave them to my parents, sister, and best friend. I kept a few for my wife and I as well.

My biggest worry is that my 2 1/2 year old gets socially stunted because of this. I used to take him either to the gym’s daycare or the playground almost everyday so he could socialize with other kids. For 3 weeks he hasn’t been near another child. Kids need to be around other kids.

I watched the first 5 episodes of “Devs” on Hulu tonight. It’s pretty damned good sci-fi, Nick Offerman is superb.

No wonder New Orleans is getting hit hard.

Town can’t catch a break.

Sounds like he has the opportunity to work on his pinball game and go pro.

Similar situation here with our 4 year old girl. Just gotta play (like a kid) with them and spend time and put educational tv and tablet stuff on. Facetime, What'sapp etc might help too and of course pinball which she likes. Importantly don't catch this thing. My biggest worry is my daughter grows up without her Dad.

People improperly wearing masks drives me nuts! If you’re not going to cover your nose and mouth, don’t bother wearing one at all.

Also people who use gloves but then touch their face, why bother? I’ve also seen a big rise in people littering used latex gloves, ugh...

Want to try something different during confinement?

Several opera houses are offering video recording of chosen recent/current (which had to be postponed) performances.

Trailer for Don Giovanni for example:

The full opera is available on the Opera de Paris website until this Sunday... but it's 3 hours long!
https://www.operadeparis.fr/magazine/don-giovanni-replay

Warning: it's sung in Italian with French sub-titles: may be a bit hard to follow

Masks are meant to prevent your potential infected droplets spreading to others, your hand and eyes are more of a concern of contracting the virus.

While a mask does serve to prevent some of the respiratory droplets from exiting an infected patient, the primary mode of transmission here is inhalation of respiratory droplets so a surgical mask would also serve to help protect an uninfected patient. Transmission through the eyes is a secondary mode and really not much you can do about it unless you want to wear goggles around which is really overkill for just walking around.

I've given several of my high risk patients a mask from our clinic stock for them to wear when they are out at the grocery store.

Quoted from TheFamilyArcade:

I already responded to you. It’s because NYC is an order of magnitude more complex than Utah, or anywhere else.
To Wit:
Largest city in the country. 9M people. Double LA, 3x Chicago and 18x SLC. 4x the entire state of Utah. Density is 27,000 people per square mile. SLC is like, 2,000.
Every day in NYC, 600k students receive free lunches from the nyc school system. Shutting down this system puts a large number of children at risk. There are 200k people in the entire Salt Lake City. 600k kids is equal to 25% of the population of your entire state.
Every day 300,000 people travel through NYC area airports. Every day more people travel through NYC airports than live the entire city of Salt Lake. Every 10 days more people pass through NYC airports than live in the entire state of Utah. Shutting international airports down is a big deal. The governor and the mayor don’t have a lot of control over that.
4M people work everyday in NYC. Different jobs, different areas, all important. Takes a little planning ahead to figure out how to clamp it down.
There are approximately 160+ different nationalities in NYC, speaking 800 different languages, and about 50% of these people don’t speak English as a first language.
NYC jails hold about 8,000 people on ay given day. About 1,000 correction officers keep track of them. Need to keep tabs on all of them.
Let’s look at “essential employees” in NYC. That have to be understood and managed.
Mass transit: 75,000 employees supporting over 15M people in the 5,000 square mile area of the NYC metro area. Managing this alone is like managing the entire public workforce of the state of Utah.
Cops: 40,000 cops, plus 10,000 more auxiliary “type” enforcement positions . How to plan and deploy for a shutdown? When a city of 9M people need to be protected and served?
Firefighters/EMTs = 18,000. See above.
25,000 doctors and 100,000 (!) nurses. All essential employees. They need to get to work, make sure their kids are cared for (and fed), and they need to have the proper PPE. That’s over half of your largest city right there. Piece of cake to manage that shut down, right?
You either have unrealistic expectations or don’t understand the order of magnitude of New York City. cities and states all over the country looked for the Fed to provide leadership and guidance. When NONE came, Governors and Mayors took matters into their own hands.
Don’t think Deblasio and Cuomo were standing Round twiddling their thumbs while they waited. They were planning the rational shut down and management of the largest city in the country, while anticipating the single largest health crisis the country has seen in 100 years. Never once did they discount the threat, hurl insults or pat themselves on the back. Or reference “corrupt media” or the “deep state”. They asked for help weeks ago.
You may be proud of your state of Utah’s response in the face of 20 cases 2 weeks ago (and 500 now), and good for you. NYC had over 700 then and over 20,000 now. It’s a different ballgame in NYC. Basically the big leagues. And your persistent questioning of how NYC has handled things (not to mention your earlier riffs on NY ski visitors bringing the virus to Utah) rings pretty hollow to me.
We’re playing chess here in NY, not checkers.

Did u work on this all day? Ok- it is a hard job running a city of 9 million. But it’s easy to run a country of 330m? Your argument, if used on a national level, would validate Trumps handling of situation.. Bravo. NY officials can close airports, highways, schools.. they didn’t because they saw same information fed officials were seeing- many cases already spreading, will not be possible to contain, why seriously damage our economy if it is a bad flu? They all gambled.
Every school district around the country have kids that would starve without school- get over yourself. Does it matter if 1 or 600k? Would they have starved to death? Maybe. Will a New Yorker die because of delay in shutting down? Many. Not sure about rest, but Wisconsin closed schools and Milwaukee public schools are offering free meals for pick up.
With logic like yours, any wonder why there is an electoral college?

#4369 4 years ago

There's allways a middleground.

You can't justify a "shutdown" to the public, before at least a small turd hits the fan; but you can not deny the whole situation and do prepartations.

Like silently getting tests ready, for free, so you know what you're dealing with and ramp up hospital capacity accordingly.

I'm in a hospital in germany; Situation isn't much different to the public but internally we were preparing since january.
(Of course we have problems as well with idiots stealing desinfectant and masks.)

Holy crap, just finished Tiger King up and what a wild and crazy ass story that is. He is quite a character and so are many other people in the show. I just cant imagine having that kind of drama in my life. I don't want to give any spoilers so I'm just going to leave it at that. Definitely worth a watch though for sure.

We finished it last night. Well worth the watch. As I was watching I realized I had seen Doc Antler’s shows at a renaissance fair with the girls and all! Tonight I will start the new season of Ozark.

Yup currently printing a different model for my local hospital. Takes only 1 hr per shield bracket and does the trick. If anyone else is printing face shields or masks, try to use PETG has it doesn't deteriorate when they use disinfection products on them so they can be reused more times.

If anyone wants to print some for there local hospitals or even super market workers etc... One spool makes roughly 60-80 brackets.

Ordinary transparent binder covers are used for the shield. It's simple but it works.

A new FDA-authorized COVID-19 test doesn't need a lab and can produce results in just 5 minutes

https://www.yahoo.com/news/fda-authorized-covid-19-test-033823184.html

"Unlike the rapid tests that have been used in other countries, and that received a new type of authorization under an FDA guideline that doesn't confirm the accuracy fo the results, this rapid testing solution uses the molecular testing method, which works with saliva and mucus samples swabbed from a patient. This means that it works by identifying a portion of the virus' DNA in a patient, which means it's much better at detecting the actual presence of the virus during infection, whereas other tests that search the blood for antibodies that are used in point-of-care settings can only detect antibodies, which might be present in recovered patients who don't actively have the virus."
