Quoted from Mr_Outlane:

Imagine if Porn Hub went down for 3 months!

Porn Hub is going to make a fortune when this is all said and done.
They are offering free premium subscription at the moment while everyone is in lock down.
When that ends a number of those users will wind up paying for full subscriptions.

Quoted from beergut666:

It's amazing to me that there are people that think you can fight a virus with money.

I really do not think think it is so much the virus, but the ramifications of what comes after the virus. My nephew has a new born, and just got laid off. My wife's niece's husband is now laid off and they bought a house last month. The stimulus money will help them.

Money does help...Musk used his to purchase ventilators from China, many of these research places are funded by some very rich people/corporations, universities have huge endowments for their research.

They should allow "one" thread where people can discuss politics. People who don't like discussing that could simply just not come in and participate in the discussion. Just my opinion.....

We can no longer discuss politics civilly. The division has been stoked so deeply that a thread that allowed it would just be a contest of who could get the other side to go away in frustration and anger. Pinside is not the place for it, as it would not end well.

#3404 10 months ago

Ya, you're right! Why didn't I think of that! I should have cashed out my 401k and bought Pornhub stock dammit!

With all the people getting laid off, will they lose their employer healthcare?

If they're laid off permanently of course they will. No company has ever continued to give ex employees healthcare after they laid them off. Lol

Alarming if you look at the graphs on this site.

Really, in the last week it has just started to accelerate almost straight up, with no bending of the curves in sight.

I dont care personally because I dont talk politics much anyways but there really wouldnt be anything wrong with a thread where people could do so. If someone gets out of line and acts like a total ass you moderate them. If you dont like the thread topic then you just dont participate in the thread..its really very simple and not a big deal.

A positive note refers to something I brought up earlier.

Read the list of countries most affected, and the top 15 are all in the northern hemisphere that are just coming out of winter.

Portugal is the highest in the southern hemisphere with under 3000 cases. So maybe this shit really doesn't like summer after all.

Unfortunately, the southern hemisphere might be in for a very long winter.

It was freezing in new York today. When is summer coming again?

It’s as if global warming has finally caved to the anti-science crowd and has given up.

Hopefully soon, my friend. The world is stuck between summer and winter right now.

Pretty chilly now here too.

It was 85° here in Texas today. I am sure we will get our 100+ days of 100+ degree heat, just like EVERY summer. Hopefully we won't have as many cases. I really feel for those that live in the big apple, though.

It's just the rest of the world catching up on tests and the fact that most countries didn't realize how fast this thing spreads. Give it another 2 weeks and it will top off.

True. Way more tests given out in the last two weeks.

I'm just holding my breath summer will indeed be this shit's enemy. Can't get here fast enough.

Doesn't help those under the equator, but it might eventually. I feel bad for them as their winter hasn't even started yet.

#3421 10 months ago

It's official. Hermosa is leading the charge. They were up in arms how many people were on the beaches last weekend.

Don't bet your life on it - at best it's delaying contagion, but not stopping it. Check Brazil for example. Same in France for our Islands in the tropics. Number of cases increasing. Unsure how many are "imported" vs local transmission though.

#3423 10 months ago
Quoted from jlm33:

Check Brazil for example.

I did. 2500 cases. 500 less than Portugal. There is not one country under the equator with more than that yet.

But it is going to start cooling down.

Even when a flu is heavy in winter, due to travel, sometimes it makes it into summer countries, but with way less cases and doesn't seem to spread as easily.

I was in Australia and they have a lot of tourism from China. They should have been hit much harder by now.

In New Zealand we are shut down for at least 4 weeks. The only things open are supermarkets, gas, and medical. You should not leave your house except for a walk. It could last longer and there will still be restrictions after this ends. Its harsh but no way around it. Modeling shows around 80k deaths (population just under 5 million) if we didn't take such strong measures. Its serious people look after yourself.

That is similar to what parts of our country are doing...that is not “shut down” in my opinion.

Several cities in China have had flocks of crows circling over them as crows are scavengers and eat carrion.
I.E. they can smell the death and are attracted to it.

Would you though? Would you REALLY?!?!

They would have to nail me to a cross first. I make my own immunities.
But for those that want it, great!

This is not the flu. It is a novel strain of a Corona virus. It can kill more aggressively. You may want to rethink your ‘purity’. Besides, didn’t all of our generation already get stabbed with the Polio and/or smallpox vaccines? You know, those wonderful arm or leg scars we have...

Unless the vaccine is Scotch. Then please self administer at your leisure.

We really need a big blizzard to shut the Northeast down for a couple weeks. We had about an inch of snow all winter.

Is anyone else finding it very difficult to observe the "social distancing" order? I mean I do my best but damn man when I go in the grocery store it's next to impossible. They don't have all their checkout registers open so customers get backed up at registers and when in the isles they are just wide enough for carts to pass and with all the people in the stores it just isn't possible. I'm in the senior age group and the stores have made us a special shopping hour but hell it's between 7 am-8am everyday and it really doesn't help a lot because the Deli, butcher shop, etc. don't open until 8 am so if you want lunchmeat or what not you still have to come back during the normal hrs.

Don't take this wrong way as the stores are very short staffed and I know they're doing their best to accommodate us, it's just frustrating if you're trying to observe the order and protect your family.

I have been shopping for my neighbors as they are both in their late 70's and don't get out much as is due to mobility being a little slow, one only has one functioning lung so I'm going for them too "I hope" to lesson the chance of exposure for them. I just hope as I've told them to be sure to wipe everything down before putting it away. We've been neighbors for over 25yrs and they are really good people but I worry for them and us.

#3433 10 months ago
Quoted from RWH:

when I go in the grocery store it's next to impossible

Our local stores here in the UK have started limiting the numbers of people inside. Once it reaches the limit (which is quite low), it's one person out, one person in. Means you get the shop done quite quickly, but it can take a while to get in as you have to queue outside for a while (not standing too close to anyone). Seems to be a reasonable system.

#3434 10 months ago

Wegmans instacart delivery is nice. A Wegmans employee picks your order and the order is delivered to your home. If stores could find the staffing, this would be a better way to promote actual social distancing over just letting people shop as normal. I still think "essential" stores like Depot and Lowes should be on an appointment model, and only selling ESSENTIAL items right now. Or even do online pickup only. Paint is NOT an essential item, yet hordes of people are still crowded around the paint counter every day.

My favorite local gun shop is also a pharmacy. For customer safety, they are no longer doing face to face gun sales, and you have to know exactly what you want. You call and make an appointment. There is no handling firearms to try out. You call in for what you want, and they bring the paperwork out to your car. You finish the entire transaction outside the store, so pharmacy customers are not affected. They seem to be having no problems selling out of scheduled slots every day. It also helps that they seem to beat just about any online price out there.

What do you mean by “shut down”?

A 3 week stay at home order for all Americans similar to what Britian, India, and other countries are doing. Those 3 weeks would suck staying home but instead we are now faced with this lasting for at least another 1-3 months here in the US with far more cases / deaths.

Yeah it's super frustrating. I've left our property once in the past 12 days. I've been watching my daughter cry because she can't play with her friends.

Yet there are still people that think it's a joke. So thanks to them for turning our 2-3 week exercise into 2-3 months.

Dyson in Britian is ramping up to build 15,000 ventilators after receiving a call from the prime minister 10 days ago.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/26/tech/dyson-ventilators-coronavirus/index.html

"This new device can be manufactured quickly, efficiently and at volume," Dyson added, saying that the new ventilator has been designed to "address the specific needs" of coronavirus patients"

In the US Tesla is looking to quickly reopen a factory in New York for ventilator production.

Thanks for worldometers link. The log version their total cases is not a good message but comparing it to the log version of the US cases from infection2020 gives me hope. Don't want that upward turn in their logarithmic graph to show up in the US data.

Not trying to be funny but I find it hard to believe we could start a thread that would cause more animosity between members more than this one. I admit to being guilty of adding to this shitfest in this thread, sometimes just hard not to comment on some of the asinine statements made.

True, but this one is....special in that we are kind of united against a single enemy. We may not agree on the approach, but we can get behind we need to fight it. A free for all for every little political item would get ugly...I've seen it on other forums. This thread is way tame comparatively.

#3448 10 months ago

I think our approach should be different than what we are doing now. We have each state doing their own thing and some of those states are doing a piss poor job. Our government should if they want to get our economy going should declare a lockdown in every state no exceptions for a period of at least 3 weeks and punish those who don't abide by it. People will have to go out for necessities but who needs to sun on the beach or have corona virus parties. Our present approach in my opinion will do little more than create ongoing "hot spots" for the foreseeable future. We need to act as a nation of one and force all states act in unison to be effective.

It was interesting listening to MN's governor Walz yesterday. He ordered a stay at home for 2 weeks and also extended the closure of schools, and non essential businesses until May 1st.

What was eye opening was his reasons. At least as far as MN is concerned, there is no more curve flattening. It's too late for that. He also said there will be a spike in cases. Nothing we can do now to prevent that.

The purpose of the stay at home and other measures is to delay the spike so the state, hospitals and medical community can prepare better for said spike.

I'm not into politics and don't care for politicians in general but after listening to Walz speak over the last few days, he makes those higher up look like spoiled children who blame everyone else for this problem and do nothing but pat themselves on the back for such a great job the US is doing.

Back to work by Easter? What an f'ing moron.

Quoted from jlm33:

To be accurate, I'd rather say "One of the few countries making us look bad".
Very, very few governments chose the right path.
And NZ had the chance to have more time to consider all options.
Yet, they took the right decision.

Good for New Zealand, but to be fair they are 25% the population of New York state...and an island. Not an apples to apples comparison.

IMO, ALL western governments should have forced us into strict quarantine 2-3 weeks ago. Kind of inexcusable, since we all saw the trajectory in China. that would have been the only way to stamp this out. Maybe they'll learn for next time.

Going to be an ugly 2-4 weeks ahead as this peaks and hospitals are overwhelmed.
