Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we continue to move right along.

People are not dying in great numbers in any one location. It is 50 people here, 35 over there, 26 over here, 15 over there. That makes it deceptive. People are not dying by the thousands in in one place and we are letting our guard down.

I didn’t read it that way (full of contradictions) but I do agree we are still mostly at the hypotheses stage of the game.

I think the basic point being driven at is that omicron is different enough from delta that it’s effective transmission rate is significantly higher, even though the R0 might not be much different.

So, omicron will infect more people faster. Even if it’s effective severity (which is still very much a guess) is less, more people means more problems.

Classic example: A virus with a 100% death rate that spreads very slowly is not as bad as a virus with a 1% death rate that spreads very rapidly.

Death rate vs vaccination rate at county level from June thru now (delta wave proxy).

“Fully” Vaccinated assumes two doses for mRNA or 1 dose JnJ. (My opinion is we shouldn’t consider anything less than boosted as fully vaccinated anymore but I take what I can get pretty chart wise).

Also included case rate vs vaccine rate. Author used same data and methodology.

The big outlier blob is Miami-Dade county which has some data issues.

A new mask mandate was issued today state-wide for NY to "combat the winter surge", which will go into effect Monday 12/13:

Businesses with public spaces must either require everyone to wear masks, or require everyone to be vaccinated. In other words, if businesses check for proof of vaccination status, masks are optional for vaccinated individuals. If they don't check, masks are required for everyone, regardless of status.

This mandate will be in effect until 1/15, and at that point, it will be re-evaluated.

That is interesting.

I know the numbers do not always agree from one website to another but I keep it simple and consistent, and stay with the website that brought me to the dance.

So, yesterday another 1574 people died. We now total 817,326 deaths.

My GF and I were talking about all the deaths from heart disease and diabetes, etc.

Here are some stats on heart disease deaths in the US. The numbers are quite high. But we live with it and go on with life. The big difference with all of these other killers is that they are not contagious. I have had 5 family members die of cancer. I went and visited all of them in the hospitals and held their hands as they were suffering and dying.

Cancer is not contagious so no special precautions are needed to visit a cancer patient, etc. ( I was a smoker back then and my dad was dying of lung cancer. And I would sit with him in his hospital room as we burned one Marlburo after another. It was too late for him so no point in quitting, and I was a nicotine slave at the time. And yes, hospitals had ashtrays for the smokers back then in 1988 ).

We cannot do that with Covid. Hell, we cannot even go visit our dying loved ones.

Your study is for 2017. I will like to see how 2020 and 2021 average out for daily deaths.

I did some playing around with the numbers.

Using standard business practice of 360 days per year.

7,708 per day average x 360 = 2,774,880 total deaths + (817,000 Covid deaths/2 years)/360 = 2,774,880 + 408,500= 3,183,380 deaths per year/360

3,183,380/360 = 8,842 deaths per day average when Covid deaths are included with the 2017 daily deaths number.

7708 * 12% = 924. 924 + 7708 = 8632. So, using these numbers, Covid has increased the 2017 daily death rate by a little more than 12%.

12% is a huge increase ! 12% dividend payout ratios makes Wall Street investors drool. Most retailers would be on the moon for a 12% pretax profit margin.

This is just simple arithmetic and will not be accurate. But it would be interesting to see how it matches up with real data from the CDC in a couple of years.

I've never understood the whole "honor system" thing. It makes no sense. The overlap between people that are not vaccinated and people that would voluntarily wear a mask is practically nonexistent. It should either be that everyone has to wear a mask or no one has to wear a mask.

I’ll help Trekkie out here. I even added context. This is similar to how he was accusing me of giving medical advice… on a pinball board… on the internet(!). He was unable to distinguish that from actual medical advice. In this case ONE person said it “sounds like” it could be, and the context was that they were massively cutting the field due to the pandemic. He took that as an iron clad stake in the ground that everyone voted was true. We must be persecuting marathons.

Simple facts. There is a pandemic. It is caused by a respiratory virus. It spreads person to person through breathing in droplets from an infected person. You should do what you can to prevent that from happening. I finally had time to decorate the house. Merry Christmas!

Look at all the heat the mandate has taken. State Supreme Courts are knocking mandate down.

But forget the mandate. Witness the few people who have been killed for trying to enforce mask wearing in a store.

How would you enforce everyone to wear a mask? Most retailers don't make enough money to hire armed security guards at every door. And moving the stock boy to guard duty at the door will not work.

Most of the stores I go into now have all employees making up. Employees are the captive audience. Most of the customers walk in and do not bother with a mask.

What should be done? Calling in the National Guard is not a practical option.

About the only thing that could be done, IMO, is for some cities to start citing mask-less people and locking them up in jail for a few days. That might help some. But we are the land of the free; It is China that is locking people up.

So, how should we mask wearing?

It's a compromise, but it's not a great one.

To avoid confrontations and the extra effort and the navigation of legal issues for businesses/organizations to do mask/vaccination enforcement, the onus is placed on the individual to exercise their own judgement on when to wear a mask.

I agree, from a health perspective, it's pretty ineffective, especially since it's the anti-mask/anti-vax crowd that is generally going to be non-compliant and also the ones responsible for spreading covid in most situations.

So, since NY has rising infection rates, hospitals are filling up with covid patients again, and since the holidays are likely to be a super spreader event, it seems the acting governor made the decision to enact a mask mandate.

However, mandates are being fought in court cases in various other locales/states, so it's unclear if this mandate will stand for any length of time or be struck down by the courts.

Anti-vaxologist and televangelist Marcus Lamb has finally stopped spouting Covid vaccine conspiracy theories and alternative therapies. I wonder how many of his followers died from taking his advice? According to his family, Covid didn't kill him. The Devil did it.

At least he can't be considered a hypocrite, he was apparently unvaccinated and died with Ivermectin on board. Many of the platformed anti-vaxxers are actually vaccinated and insist on more proven Covid remedies when the shit hits the fan.
