Quoted from zaphX:We'll get there eventually, but right now there's no way to differentiate a vaccinated person from non.
I disagree with this a bit. I treat everyone whom I don't know their vaccine status as unvaccinated. If they try to get to close to me, I treat them like they have asymptomatic Covid. It is surprisingly easy because I'm not putting myself in any situations that require more information about them.
For the people closer to me, like friends and family, I already know their vaccine status. I know the ones I can hang out with, and I know the ones that are only a few weeks from getting their ass kicked playing pinball together after some second shots this week.
Quoted from cottonm4:Well, it looks like there might be a showdown in Florida over vaccination cards. Seems like Norwegian Cruise Lines wants all of those boarding its ships to be vaccinated and have something, like a vaccination card, to prove it.
NCL is talking of taking its ships somewhere other than Florida.
https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/norwegian-cruise-line-florida-vaccinations/index.html
"In Florida, your personal choice regarding vaccinations will be protected and no business or government entity will be able to deny you services based on your decision," DeSantis said."
----------------------------------------------------------
It will be interesting to see how this works out. Who will blink first? NCL or the Florida Gov.? Anybody want to place a bet?
I remember when Hurricane Katrina wiped out Biloxi, Mississippi and trashed all of the casino barges anchored to shore. At that time, the barges had been there about 10 years and Mississippi got to liking all of the cash the casinos were feeding to the state coffers.
After Katrina wiped out the casino barges, the casinos said they were not interested in rebuilding only to be stuck on barges. The casinos said that unless they could build on dry land they were leaving the state.
Well, it did not take the Mississippi powers-that-be very long to roll over and say, " Yes, Casino Masters. We love your money. You can build on dry land."
Easily solution to this.
Allow everyone on to the cruise without checking vaccination status - as per DeSantis.
As soon as out of his jurisdiction check for vaccination status. If you're unvaccinated you've got a long swim back to shore.
Quoted from zaphX:Last fall my doctor told me he hadn't had a single flu case for the first time, due to masking.
Called it - 10 months ago
Quoted from WJxxxx:I will predict that the number of deaths directly attributed to flu will be significantly lower over the coming years for a number of reasons.
The majority of those who would have succumbed to flu will already have succumbed to Covid.
The social distancing and hygiene regiments put in place to combat Covid will also slow the spread of flu, not just Covid.
Quoted from Daditude:I had a very difficult day today. I visited with my friends dad. For those that have not been following along, my friend died from covid. He was very young. His family is hurting. I am hurting. Please send them your thoughts and prayers.
I'm very sorry about this Daditude.
When people claim COVID is fake, or has a 99.99% survival rate, these stories are the ones I think of.
People I know have lost loved ones. I've had some friends get it and recover, but I've also had ones get "long haul" COVID and they are just not the same any more (mental fog etc.)
I'm really glad we're approaching the end of this mess due to amazing vaccine technology, and furious that people's selfishness and ignorance allowed us to lose so many lives.

This is my approach too and I will not spend any time inside unmasked with people who's vaccination status is unknown... the safest thing to do is assume they aren't vaccinated and may be carrying the virus. The only bars and restaurants I go to is where I can sit outside, similarly if I do an occasional hangout with a friend, it's in a park or outside space. If someone wants to be unmasked with me inside, we need to have a conversation about their vaccination status and their protocols. It feels alot like having a safe sex talk with someone before being intimate with them, you need to protect yourself. At some point when the infection rate is much lower I assume this will change for me, but right now locally, the 4th wave infection rate is higher than the first two waves of the virus here.
Quoted from mcluvin:Alabama luring the unvaccinated with a free 2-lap drive around the Talladega Superspeedway

Hell, I'd get vaccinated again for a ride around Talladega.
Honest question. Most people say a sore arm is the worst side effect of the vaccine. I notice on tv the vaccine is being given into peoples left arm; I assume this is so that their dominant arm is unaffected.
I’m left handed, should I get the vaccine in my right arm, does it matter? If my arm is sore for a day, I’d prefer it to be the one I don’t use.
I had a tough chat with an old high school friend the other day. He lives on the other side of the country, in an area where people think that a yellow line down the middle of the road is too much government control over their lives. He just got over a mild case of covid, so naturally he think this is all overblown. He thinks masks are useless. He’s more worried about dying from the vaccine then from the virus.
.... then he get into the crazy conspiracy shit. Did you know dogs were vaccinated 20 years ago for covid-19. (He’s confusing covid with canine coronavirus.) AstraZeneca is giving lots of totally healthy people blood clots, if your healthy why would you want a vaccine that kills you. (It’s not like that at all.). This went on for a bit and it was getting tough to listen too
This is one of my oldest friends. He was there for me 25 years ago, when no one else was. But man I really wonder how Alberta life has changed him so much. Definitely not the same guy that moved out there years ago.

I read some lady in Italy was administered 6 doses of Pfizer in one shot and she's doing fine. I say go for it....

I see where you are coming from but these give-aways give it a circus-like vibe. “This vaccine could save your life but we will drag out the balloons and hot dogs if that’s what it takes to get you to step up.”
My county just hit a 70% vaccination rate for people with at least the first dose, my neighborhood just hit 80%. I expect our infection rate to drop off dramatically soon, especially now that kids 12 and up can get the vaccine. Back when this thread started we all imagined all kinds of scenarios for how this might play out, but it's looking really positive IF PEOPLE GET VACCINATED.
It's crazy to think, if all the world had the vaccination rate of my neighborhood, we'd have herd immunity and this virus would be over.
Quoted from Luckydogg420:I’m left handed, should I get the vaccine in my right arm, does it matter? If my arm is sore for a day, I’d prefer it to be the one I don’t use.
Usually, shots are given in the non-dominant arm.

That's how you appeal the hardcore conservatives that won't get it or pick up the people that are indifferent, either that or we manage to get Trump out there stumping for people getting vaccinated. We need a multi-pronged marketing campaign at this point to get people to do the right thing to end this virus.

I'm left handed, got my first one in my left arm, my second in my right. Yeah, your arm will be sore for a day or two, but still totally functional, it really doesn't matter much. I picked my right for the second one because I didn't like the way Elvira's face was red for two days after getting the first one in my Elvira pinball tattoo on my left arm

They will default to the non dominant arm, but I chose my left because I sleep on that side generally. Pain was minimal, I only noticed it when lifting my arm over my head or putting pressure on the injection site. I would not have been able to sleep on it the first day, but within 24 hours there was no pain even with pressure.

I was asked which arm I wanted it in both times, I took one in the left and one in the right.

That's what it's going to take for some people. I suspect employee incentives will entice many. Federal Employees get 4 hours of comp time for getting the shot and I think 12 hours sick time for the expected discomfort. That's a nice chunk of paid time off if you get vaccinated.

Mostly this is because people are driving through clinics, I think. I was offered the other arm if I wanted.
Quoted from ForceFlow:Usually, shots are given in the non-dominant arm.
Not when I joined the military. You sat down and two corpsman stepped up with the air shot machines. One on each arm. Whap. Whap. Next.

I got my 2nd dose of the Pfizer vaccine this past Sunday, May 9. The pharmacist asked me both times which arm to administer the shot and both times, I said "it doesn't matter". He gave the shot in the right arm both times. I would have had more reaction to a wasp sting in the general area where the shot was administered. No other side effects in my case. Only other thing is that I heard on the news this morning that they "might" want people to get a booster shot after 6 months. I think I might decline that. I am vaccinated and that's that, as far as I am concerned. My thought is that in 6 months, all this insanity should be over...

Right arm first shot, left arm second shot and im left handed. Both hurt next day but the first shot hurt longer. She went alittle lower and into the curve of my shoulder muscle(other hobby is weightlifting) on the second shot and had me dangle my arm where the first shot in right arm my arm was bent on my lap. Not sure if any of that means anything just figured id say it.

It’s not Alberta, it’s targeted media. If you show interest in a certain kind of news, you get targeted with increasingly radical articles.
Quoted from mcluvin:It’s not Alberta, it’s targeted media. If you show interest in a certain kind of news, you get targeted with increasingly radical articles.
Agreed. I've never seen so many people with dumb-ass views as is now the case.
Social media radicalises people by targeted amplification of news feeds, as algorithms efficiently get people to stay on the platform clicking links. It's evil and should be banned. The continuing social breakdown of Western societies with tribal warfare across every grouping vividly illustrates this pernicious influence. It's a sort of digital civil war, catalysed by greedy billionaires who care for nothing but click-bait profit.
Ban social media!
Just my 0.02c
Looking good (now at least) in the UK for Covid. Over two-thirds of adults now vaccinated, with vaccine rate maintaining at about 500,000 per day. Children and booster/variant jabs will start soon, and this:
"Among those at most risk - the over-50s and younger adults with health conditions, where 99% of Covid deaths have occurred - uptake for the first dose has been 95%".
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-57073312
Anti-vaxxer has NOT been a big issue here, thank God, so we should hopefully be at herd immunity levels soon.
Maybe the ends justify the means? If a certain percentage of the population won't listen to reason, give them something they will believe to keep them in line?
When are they gonna figure out that once us science believers are all protected, our leaders can release the triple mutation variant and wipe them out once and for all?
"The entirely baseless idea is a key cog in a larger conspiracy that COVID-19 was a ploy to depopulate the world, and the vaccine is what will cull the masses."
Sounds like something right out of the plot of Utopia.

U.S. Constitution - First Amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
My girlfriend's son is a licensed massage therapist in a small town not too far from me. He has been working hard for 10 years to build up his business. He got vaccinated a few weeks ago. He let his clientele know that he was vaccinated. He lost 13 or 14 clients who dropped him cold when he told them all that he was vaccinated.
I never could figure that one out. Your link sheds a little bit of light.
I think your link may explain away my confusion about this:

"The conspiracy—which comes in several shapes and sizes—more or less says the vaccinated will “shed” certain proteins onto the unvaccinated who will then suffer adverse effects. "
I'm more worried about the viruses that these unvaccinated dumb-asses will shed on the rest of us.

I wouldn't ban media, but I would force Facebook and Twitter to amend their hate amplifier algorithms. There is a difference between a news feed that delivers a balanced selection of, um, news feeds, and a feed that only delivers hate. It is literally hateful how these social media platforms behave.
The BBC is good (if occasionally irritating) because it always tries to give both sides of an argument. Facebook and Twitter (et al) deliberately only deliver one side of the argument that agrees with your views, triggers you, and gets you to click. It is an incredibly efficient bias and hate amplifier, that has sown hatred and division wherever it has operated. It is literally tearing apart Western society ...

India for sure cannot be any fun.
" Scores of dead bodies found floating in India's Ganges River"
https://news.yahoo.com/scores-dead-bodies-found-floating-141247995.html
" Scores of dead bodies have been found floating down the Ganges River in eastern India as the country battles a ferocious surge in coronavirus infections. "
"Surinder, a resident of Ghazipur who uses one name, said villagers didn't have enough wood to cremate their dead on land."
“Due to the shortage of wood, the dead are being buried in the water,” he said. “Bodies from around 12-13 villages have been buried in the water.”

Jeez, get a shovel. Dig a hole.

If things keep going as they are, India and Brazil will overtake USA for the most deaths.

It is clever. But sad that people have to bribed. I went through smallpox and polio vaccine. No one had to bribe any of us back then. We went. We knew the benefits of being vaccinated.
I guess there will also be some college scholarships available for the young ones.
Quoted from cottonm4:It is clever. But sad that people have to bribed.
I agree that it's sad, but if that's what it takes, then desperate times call for desperate measures. They are using money that was already earmarked for COVID relief, so this seems like a perfectly reasonable way to spend it.
