Quoted from RTR:

Masks aren’t working as good as they should bc of non-compliance, poor mask technique, and poorly constructed masks. We need mandates, PSA’s for mask education, and freely available high quality masks. Should have had it for 9 months now.
Thanksgiving travel cases are just starting to hit the hospitals. 3000 people a day are dying right now. No amount of ‘opening up’ policy gets me into a restaurant, movie theater, pinball event, public restroom, etc.

They're (masks) working for me as I have not got the virus yet. I've flown across the US three times since this nightmare began and drove to California in late March-Had my last Restaurant meal in Lincoln, NE on the 21st as they were already shut down in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa. With Michigan closing restaurants for dine-in for over three weeks again, we take the 45 mile trip to Toledo, Ohio as well as eat at the open sit-down restaurants in the Tribal casinos that said no more, they closed for 40-50 days before and added partitions and increased their cleaning protocols which is good enough for me.

I recently drove down to Ft. Meyers, Florida and was happy to be able to eat inside a Hardees in Tennessee as well as everywhere in Florida. Could have in Georgia but wanted to drive straight through so we grabbed sandwiches at the Bu-Cee's Covid Plaza and ate in the vehicle. No problems for me with public restrooms as you gotta go when nature calls.

Quoted from pinball_ric:

The mask idea is not a farce there is a HUGE overwhelming gigantic pile of evidence that they work. Look at the asian countries who have near 100% compliance. They're pretty much back to normalish. Other eastern countries as well. Yes you (and I) have been doing our part but there is a HUGE number of americans that haven't been. THAT is why we aren't seeing the decline we should be or at least a slower rise.

Agreed that they seem to work for me but since the rate has only increased lately, I can't see adding another hundred days with the vaccine being administered. I will likely still wear mine even if the mandate does not take place but I want restaurants to offer dine-in service to help them stay in business as well as I like to patronize them anyway. I have done my share of carry-out and tip the staff well.

Closer to home, look at Kansas.

PERFECT, yes it does, thank you for your time and response!

#20753 3 years ago
Quoted from MrBally:...since the mask idea now seems like a farce.

It wouldn't be a farce if ALL Americans had worn them from the get go. But, when you have the hmfic not wearing one for months and ridiculing people for wearing them, then you have ___?% of the population, who are lemmings, not wearing them either, in turn dragging out this pandemic longer than it needed to be. Until the troglodytes start wearing them, they are going to continue killing people.

#20754 3 years ago

One for the 5G conspiracy theorists.

Since we started vaccinating people at the hospital I work, EVERYONE's phone reception has dropped off in work.
Is the vaccine fighting the 5G?

Of course it isn't, it's ridiculous to try and link the 2, but that's no more farfetched than some of the guff being spouted.

Back in the real world, I get my jab tomorrow morning.

Well, all our hospitals are near full, so I hope I don't have a heart attack in the next day or two.

Our authoritarian governors continue to increase their business casualty lists. New York's famous 21 Club is the latest, with the now total shutdown of indoor dining. Already lost a few thousand restaurants here; we still have good-enough-for-outdoor-dining weather, but even that's been outlawed. Why? Hmm, I went for a hike today: half the people on the trail didn't even have a mask with them, and some that did weren't wearing theirs. Yes, you're outdoors, but you should have a mask handy and wear it when you're near and especially passing by someone else on a 3-foot-wide trail. Most of the guilty ones were under 30, but some older folks failed the test, too. ICU beds here now down to 10% remaining and dropping a point or two a day.

Quoted from chad:

This vaccine won't give you HIV!
it uses parts of protein originating from HIV, and may make you positive for the HIV test, as this triggers an antibody response that can interfere with HIV screening, which are based on the detection of said protein.

That's... rather unfortunate (and someone should be fired for not anticipating this) but not dangerous: ""There is no possibility the vaccine causes [HIV] infection, and routine follow up tests confirmed there is no HIV virus present"

Quoted from cottonm4:

What would you have the Prez. Elect do? He does not have the ball to run with for another 40 days or so. We have been through the last 9 months of "we have it under control". "By summer, it will be gone." "One day we will wake up and it will all go away."
I am cognizant of your argument that, in the end, maybe there is nothing we can do. But is that a reason not to try?
Here is where "we have it under control" has gotten us.
When we are going to be really hosed is when those in the medical community get to the point they say screw it, we are tired, we are dying, we get no respect from the outside world. We are going home to our families and just ride it out with everybody else. And if no one likes it, tough shit.
Today, we are at 299,614 deaths in the U.S. Tomorrow will be 300K plus.

I'll ask again. What should Biden be doing while he waits in the wings for the WH to clear out?

Maybe he could learn how to tie his own shoes? maybe a colouring book could help pass the time lol

Quoted from o-din:

Besides just telling everybody to wear masks, our new leader could send a real strong message by telling the American people that any of these large gatherings, be it a protest or a celebration, are dangerous, and potentially all of them super spreader events.

That, and learn how to wear your own mask properly before before you tell everybody else to.

Same here - we will probably witness the lowest number of casualties due to the flu for several decades.

Add to that that there were more people vaccinated against the flu (stronger recommendations to do so this year, if only to avoid being hospitalized among too many covid patients).

We saw similar results in Australia with a 30% increase in flu vaccinations in the lead up to our winter and significant drop in deaths due to the flu

I don’t think the data is screwed, I think all of us in Boston are. But this was completely expected. The data is Boston, but I’d think this would be the same in most areas. Two weeks after so many stupid people gathered with family and friends, you would expect spikes on all the scales. Two weeks after that, right around Christmas, I’d expect deaths to also spike. It’s probably just due to the highly contagious virus.

(Ok, I got a bit snarky in that last sentence. I’m still upset that I couldn’t see my family at thanksgiving, and I’m angry people still won’t take simple measures to help contain this.)

#20768 3 years ago
Quoted from DaveH:

This could be described as the "I told you so" wave of the coronavirus. Our area has treated it casually since the beginning, and now is being hit hard. There will be echoing waves of this as long as people refuse to take precautions.
The vaccines sound promising, even though I am generally very skeptical about important things that are rushed to completion. The side effects are a bit worrisome for people with compromised immune systems and other issues. It will take some time before we know how much it is actually helping to slow down the spread.
There will always be some number of people who will remain unconvinced that there is a pandemic, but after awhile, the bodies pile up so high you can't hide them anymore.
Terrible that we've soared over 300,000 deaths now. Let's hope that the vaccines work and bring this mutha down.

Same here, 97% reduction in flu cases during our winter flu season (Southern Hemisphere) I suspect border control and 2 week quarantine requirements had a big impact on top of increased flu vaccination, hand washing etc.

I have a good friend who is head of radiology at a major hospital. He told me that one thing he's noticed with this most recent wave of cases is that the age is trending much lower than it did earlier in the year. He's seeing lots of otherwise healthy people without any underlying conditions in their 40's and even 30's with severe cases. It's frustrating, because even after all this time they don't really understand why it affects some people so drastically.

I've got a Big Lebowski and 2 Taito Vewlix cabs (Vewlices?) arriving this week, so probably will be safely socially isolated for a while By the time I emerge, it might be like the opening scene from Shaun of the Dead.

This is interesting. If you do get the vaccine, and expose yourself to HIV in the next few days- they might never correctly diagnose being HIV positive? And with HIV having a reverse transcriptase- BAM! Pfizer vaccine added to your DNA.. get the tinfoil hats out

#20777 3 years ago

Oh, you guys are talking about the shelved Australian effort? Never mind. Still, HIV could put RNAs back in your DNA, but having HIV probably worse.

Quoted from DaveH:

I know this sounds lazy, and yes, I know how to google. However, when people drop things like that, can you add a little starter link to a story about it? Thanks.

But why do that, when if you read the article, you'll soon be able to determine that either
a) the soundbite they have quoted is completely out of context or
b) the conclusion they have drawn is completely wrong.

This is likely the link in reference to 'potentially spreads a lot faster'
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55312505

Nowhere does it say that there is any evidence the new strain spreads faster.
A direct quote is "There is no clear-cut evidence the new variant of coronavirus - which has been detected in south-east England - is able to transmit more easily, cause more serious symptoms or render the vaccine useless."
While not factually incorrect to say 'potentially spreads a lot faster" (as any statement with potentially won't be), just as true a statement would be "New strain of virus could potentially cause you to grow wings."

Might I suggest this link
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55308216
Detailing just how they have come up with the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine 'so quickly'. They actually had a workable vaccine on Jan 13th - just 2 days after receiving the DNA sequence of the C-19 virus (which didn't even have a name at that point), but has taken so long to get to actually vaccinating people due to testing and regulation.
It also details the difficulty in getting it financed and manufactured as "Oxford insisted that the vaccine should be affordable, which meant no profit for the pharmaceutical company. "Not usually the way big pharma works,""

Those in the UK can watch the hour long documentary Panorama on BBC iPlayer

I have yet to see a flu case this season. I suspect it's because of masking and hand washing.

Also, this year's flu vaccine could be more effective than in past years. About everyone I know got the flu vaccine this year, people are taking it more seriously.

I'm on Day 18 post Covid test positive, about 28 days since I came down with symptoms. Today has been rough. Sore as heck. About every other day or 3rd day, I feel fine. Not today. Guess I'm a long hauler. 2020 go away !

#20789 3 years ago

That you know of.

I would imagine the sports teams are working overtime playing the hush hush action.

#20790 3 years ago

There have been several hundred identified mutations so far. It's what coronavirus (common cold, flu etc) does, and is why covid contains DNA from numerous animal species. Splice and mutation city. A mongrel, bastard virus.

Thankfully, the vaccines target numerous antigens on the spike protein, so it's unlikely to affect vaccine efficacy. May affect the ability of the bastard virus to spread/R value, though. But who knows? Porton Down and many others are currently looking at this. Worst case, additional antigen targets will be added to the vaccines. This is done annually for flu vaccines.

On the plus side, we have a huge, innovative vaccine industry now (thanks to all the investment & massive market caps), so any future plagues (and mutations) will be readily cured. And then there's all the other stuff, including cancer, that will now get vaccines. The plus side of this rotten year.

This has been really interesting to me. My son is playing hockey, and almost all of the team-associated transmissions among younger kids has been identified as happening in locker rooms and outside team related events. Still scary as heck, but until it appears to be a problem, I’m willing to let him play.

#20794 3 years ago

Governor Newsom said today he has ordered 5000 more body bags and dozens of refrigerated trailers. That dude doesn't sugarcoat anything. I respect that.

And, his taking early action and putting off what could have happened in the sweltering months of late summer when the thermometer was regularly topping 100, has probably resulted in a greener planet.

Find good news where you can, but how do you distinguish a locker room spreader event vs. a gameplay spreader event?

I would imagine the after game pizza party vs the game proper would be difficult to distinguish.

I dunno man, but it’s almost as if saying infections only occur during the second period, so let’s just play the first and third.

So how are teams trying to prevent spread in locker rooms? Do they limit how many people are in it at a time?
