Quoted from gambit3113:

DFW is actually getting so much better and safer now, too. Ugh. I'm afraid we will see complacency again and that the fall and winter wave is going to be really nasty. This sucks so much.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.dallasnews.com/news/public-health/2020/08/24/dallas-county-reports-182-coronavirus-cases-just-98-of-them-from-august-and-no-new-deaths/%3foutputType=amp#scso=_zyRFX8i7AcrwsQXux4KwBg53:0

Dallas County reported 182 more positive coronavirus tests Monday — but only 98 of them were recent cases.

It is the first time the county has had fewer than 100 daily cases in nearly four months.

Dallas County also reported no new deaths from COVID-19 for the first time since July 5.

Handy Texas Poison Control infographic.

Gee, I wonder why there has been a spike in bleach poisoning...

Quoted from EJS:

Complacency is always what gets you, virus or otherwise. I’m seeing that up here more and more with masks being used as chin straps.

I watched a Walmart employee pull her mask down from the front, then lick her fingers to turn a page.

Quoted from mcluvin:

That fits the “people of Walmart” profile perfectly.

My favorite (in terms of ridiculousness) is the guy on a plane wearing his mask like a sleeping mask for his eyes.

Here’s a story from The Globe And Mail, apparently the Province of Quebec has one of the highest “death per 100000” rates in the world. Over all, Canada has been doing quite well, but our French speaking population is not. Personally I’ve always thought of the québécois as our Americans. In the sense that they have a “don’t tread on me attitude” and an arrogance that I haven’t seen elsewhere in the country, even Alberta has a more reasonable population. IMHO

Another example of how a cavalier attitude won’t work in this situation.

We're allowed out for 1 hour a day for exercise but you can't go more than 5 k's from home , luckily the beach is 3 k's away . The dogs had fun .
Daditude , sunsets are your department but I thought this was a good one .

It's good to hear that numbers are going down in my area. My next concern will be the holidays, however.

I want to see the numbers after a couple of weeks of kids back in school in areas that otherwise have decent controls in place (mandatory mask wearing with good adherence rates and the like). Denver's on full virtual school for now, but my hope is if surrounding areas of CO that are doing full in person don't totally explode, we'll get to send the kiddos back to in-person learning in October.

What is going to happen to HALLOWEEN?

Will parents let their kids go to strange homes to Trick or Treat? Has your local community discussed this yet? Do you think it will be cancelled, or down sized?
It is easy to get the single wrapped candies out of the bag, but more difficult to get the candies out of the door bowl, without touching the candies, with or without gloves.

BAM! That should create some further posts.

In theory it should be EASY to do Halloween - everybody just wear masks and have fun. I mean many will have masks on anyway. Grown ups in the neighborhood who give out candy just need to wear their masks, and boom! Halloween. Simple right?

The problem - and you all know it - is that your kids will be visiting dozens of homes occupied by mask hoaxers who will gleefully expose your kids to their spit and then post about it on Facebook to show they are doing their part to defend freedom.

SHould probably cancel Halloween this year. It'll just be another of the dozens of things we can't get on the same page about.

It's all we are talking about down here in Tennessee. We are thinking of requiring masks for Halloween.

I was just going to crack a beer and throw candy at the kids from a distance in my chair in front yard. Sounds Fun. I have a smoke machine, it will be scary.

#18119 3 years ago

We’ll be handing out ketchup packets for Halloween. Seems on-point for 2020.

Quoted from CrazyLevi:

Masks aren't magic. Yes, they do make you somewhat safER, but unless you are talking about full deal biohazard PPE they aren't as safe as not going out and doing the activity at all.

Is fun worth the risk of crippling your children for life or having them come home and kill their grandparents?

The cloth masks everyone is wearing right now are better than nothing, but a far cry from actually making us safe enough to resume normal activity.

That being said I suppose there's one way to make Halloween safe, everyone goes as Walt and Jesse

It better happen this year. I still have a couple unopened bags of candy from last year that I haven’t touched (miraculously) I don’t think it’d last another year.

This guy was supposed to travel from continental USA, STRAIGHT to Alaska. He decided to make some stops along the way.

Good enough for him. It gets tiresome being around people who think the rules do not apply to their own sorry selves.

Each family and their respective children will take turns knocking on the door of their house and hand out candy , rotating each kid ... 2 kids may take a bit to fill up the bag ...

They probably won't be able to have Halloween..

We are at 185,000 dead. And I have gotten to the point that I am sensitized to it. Like Ho-hum, yawn. It is just another number. And that is me, who has been staying in isolation as much as I can for these last few months.

I have a hard time imagining how those who have been blowing COVID off since day one think about this mountain of death we are dealing with.

To borrow and chop up a musical phrase: Is the next death, and the next, and the next after that just going to be " you are just another brick in the wall." Is that where we are now in this pandemic? Are we adopting a caviler attitude because we have not yet been able to stop the spread?

I watch some of the political theatre and people are getting in close to each other and not wearing masks. It is like I am supposed to believe it is not happening.

A PSA to please wear your helmets while ATVing.

My wife’s last patient today came into the clinic instead of the hospital because he was worried about covid (and fear of hospitals in general I would guess).

His official reason for the visit was for a headache. My wife took one look and said “I see pieces of your skull sticking out and a chunk missing. that’s no headache”. Sent him for scans. The radiologist called and said he needed to be transferred to a specialist hospital. My wife said he was a walk in and refused to go to the ER and went home. Radiologist was shocked the dude was walking.

My wife has a strong stomach, but she had no appetite tonight.

There is reasonable fear of covid and hospitals....and then there is insanity.

Florida Department of Health claims number of COVID-19 cases in schools is confidential.
WTF!?!

Testing is down 8.75% Average, and up to 20% in others, in Free Testing availability.

No one should be "researching" anything on Facebook. Except maybe family photos. FFS.

But as for google, it's not like they're going to be biased in Microsoft's favor, they're long-time rivals.

When you are in power and you don’t like the numbers and you can’t change them you hide them.

Pathetic.

I’m sceptical about of off brand news sites. There’s a lot of misinformation going around. Could you link some credible sources, or are you just talking about random website that looks convincing?

I’ve read a lot of alternative news from vaccines deniers, all the way to Qannon supporters. After coming up with my own opinions; I believe a lot of them to be useless shit. I have issues with speculation and leaps on logic, but you have a convincing argument, I will listen to the facts and try to understand your perspective. If your sources are true and accurate then hopefully you will be able to convince me to see the light.

It is my understanding that Texas is doing something similar (not breaking out school data).

Given how Iowa was with the meat packing plants, wouldn’t surprise me if they do something similar.

Its really quite amazing, and ultimately how everyone could be effected.

It's more about understanding/accepting human nature, than which "news sources" one chooses to try and verify, or not. Nobody should for a minute assume "mainstream" information to be reliable, that has already been established. To practice "deductive reasoning" requires Broad analysis of information from all (as many as possible) sources, reliable or not. If 2 + 2 is said to equal 5, the inconsistency needs to be noticed. No one person really has the available time to do the level of investigation that would be required. It is about that thing that used to be called "common sense", and trying to come to some reason and sense by interpreting what can be discovered and what we see or experience. Still though, rubbish in, rubbish out. Mindlessly soaking up fanciful "stories" that are placed before you without things being verified, and not putting effort into reasoning and checking, is Not being informed. Some cases information becomes scarce (for various dubious reasons), posing it's own questions ... and roadblocks to knowledge.

... and now it's 1984 ...

... among other things long since predicted.

I digress...
