Quoted from cottonm4:

The only article Google shoots out is this one.
https://www.wsaw.com/2020/07/10/baraboo-mother-writes-i-am-lost-after-her-daughters-death/
" A statewide Amber Alert was issued after Kodie went missing Monday afternoon. Her body was found on Tuesday morning in a cornfield in Baraboo. Authorities say preliminary results from her autopsy indicate she committed suicide."
This is all I can find. It says nothing about her being depressed from being stuck at home. It does not say anything about a bottle of pills.
And this happened 30 days ago.
Please clarify.

Quoted from cottonm4:

You, as well as anybody else, can believe whatever you want. I believing you are reaching to make a conclusion to fit your thoughts. I could be wrong, of course, but that is what believing is all about.

Yup, because pre Covid 11% of all American teenage deaths were the result of suicide. I am sure suicide and depression are a simple thing and could only be caused by home isolation as a result of COVID-19. Serious sarcasm here.

Quoted from fosaisu:

Of course we'll probably just settle for "it is what it is."

I won't! never! If we settle for that, then we might as well just take off the masks and go back to normal and see where the numbers go! Then whenever everything goes to shit and we can't leave our homes, we can't go to the hospital if we have an emergency, we worry about the food supply ect ect...
then economy fallout will seem like a drop in the bucket!

Quoted from smalltownguy2:

A 10-year old gets relocated to a new area, schools closed 2 weeks later, and she's forced to stay home alone. She commits suicide, saying "I can't do it any more."
Go ahead and spin the death any way that fits your own narrative, I guess. I believe this:
Had she been in-school and making friends, this wouldn't have happened.
My own children (girls, aged 14 and 13) have both expressed their own feelings of severe depression the past 5 months. They're sad, and they miss their friends.

You are “spinning” this story, not me. You took a story and changed it around to suit your point - total spin. I reported what actually happened (you know, facts) - but you invented your own narrative to suit your argument.

Just awful. I can’t believe this girl’s suicide is being used as a political talking point. There’s zero evidence - NONE - backing up your “lockdown caused her suicide” theory. Please Stop spreading it.

I hate this “but they’ll suicide!” Argument. It’s so cynical and a total fallacy. Remember when they were telling us there would be mass suicides if we didn’t reopen the economy?

Please stop it. We need to base our policy on science and health, not on fear mongering And fallacy anecdotes about mass suicides.

Quoted from OLDPINGUY:

None of this would be necessary, if Leadership did 2 things.
Tons of Masks, and Tons of Words, and Pictures saying "Wear a mask, or we will need to institute Policies"
At this time, there are many that believe Statues and Buildings are more important than American Lives.
(and Ive lost the 12th person I know, too young, IMO)

Again, 12% of healthcare professionals with masks everywhere still became positive. Positive doesn’t mean you get sick necessarily, but you can spread it to someone that can die. Imagine infection rate for 6 yr olds or people after having a couple of beers. There is no safe way for schools, restaurants, bars, grocery stores,.. to function without substantial risk. If a person can become infected twice- documented, a vaccine might not work. There is no easy answer.

I'm fortunate enough that both my wife and I have stable employment during this. I've had practically 0 issue distancing. It sucks to not see friends, but at least we can still jam out on video games and such. We even ran a few virtual power nights using tabletop simulator (and paypal). We got our families up to speed on video stuff, and while we're not actually physically present, we're interacting with a lot of those parties more than we ever did.

I'm in better shape than I have been since I had a physical job. I'm getting out and playing tennis and getting some bike rides in. We're also focusing on eating better and calorie intake. It's not a crazy transformation, but I do feel better than I did 6 months ago. It has sort of snowballed, and the better we feel the more we get done around the house.

I can see how people could go the other way with it, but this whole thing has allowed me to get some extra time with my family and get my health a little bit better on track. I doubt I'm alone in that.

Perhaps laziness really is the root of all evil.

Learning and thinking is hard, whereas believing in a conspiracy theory requires no effort at all.

Why not call all knowledge fake and believe the moon is made of pumpkin spice latte? Yay I win let’s get some Aqua Net and toilet paper rolls and go there in a homegrown rocket!

Meanwhile, back on topic, this is a cheap mitigation tool. MERV13 + rubber bands + fan = worth a shot! Early tests are seeing good results.

To who? How about the people who have to pay the bills to keep their sorry asses alive and get healthy again.
You hand out here. Your address is private. And if you have any pinball machines you keep them hidden.
Where do you live? Are you playing hermit out in the sticks somewhere and using a hand crank generator for power?

So you support these moves? That is ok. Some people do.
Most people desire freedom. There can be a healthy mix without destroying the 1st Amendment. Cutting off Utilities is not the answer.
There are desirable Locales in the US, places that are good to raise a Family, not look over your shoulder when in Town. Peaceful places free from restrictions, free from the "New Normal" being pushed upon us.
Do your Research, these are the desirable areas the wise are flocking to.

Still waiting on that source regarding 1.3 million protesters in Germany.

Newb, the figure came from a Friend in Germany, the semi-official count repeated ad nauseam by protest Organizers that day and a hundred comments on Youtube. Sorry it was wrong.
Fact remains it was a cross-section of regular German people with no particular alliance that felt it important to take to the streets.

My wife is losing friends, colleagues, and former mentors left and right, so Please Stop with the sick or just positive nonsense.

So you are in a hot spot? Where are you, I am surprised anyone knows this many people who have succumbed to corona. Were they older, have underlying (comorbidity) conditions?
I am not trying to be insensitive. Nobody around here knows anyone who has passed from this.

Quoted from BazilBLast:

Victoria is now in stage 4 Lockdown .
You can only go out for exercise for one hour a day .
Only one person can go shopping within a 5 kilometre radius
You need a special permit to go to work .
If you do not have your permit on you , it's $1,600 plus in fines .
If your business gives you a false permit it's $100,000 fine .
If you have tested positive and you're not at home , checked by the police and army its a $5,000 , fine if you're not home a second time it's $10,000 .
My wife and I are very lucky , she can work from home and I work for an essential business making medical equipment .
Business that were too close are allowed to stay open because they supply us , for example the powder coaters were going to shut down but because we need them , they are allowed to stay open , same as the people who supply us with glue and staples .
Luckily I think we will survive this but many other businesses won't be able to survive 6 weeks of shutdown .
As bad as all of this is , most people are sad about missing the footy

A lot is being asked of medical professionals. Many are getting sick. Many are dying. Even factoring for age, globally and locally, those that are constantly being exposed are dying at significantly higher rates than your average joe.

We do not directly work with all our friends, mentors, etc. but that doesn’t mean we still don’t keep in contact or remember them. A couple with three kids that we are close to from med school live way down in New Orleans. He is a radiologist, she is a pulmonary specialist. She caught it and survived. Was very scary for them, their kids, and their friends. She sees what this thing does first hand on a daily basis. Was careful. Wasn’t given proper PPE. Caught it.

A comparison: Truly is fun when you are asked to go into a burning building, but your unit is out of respirators so you are gonna have to just hold your breath or figure out something on your own.

My wife still gets 1 mask a week (that is intended for single use) and is lucky to have it. She has to bring her own cleaning supplies some days to wipe down door handles and the like.

If you go back thru the quotes, I was referring to your comment on a pinsider who was referring to the high infection rate of healthcare workers. Their point was if healthcare can’t do it, how can we expect schools to.

Paulding County, Georgia. First week of school. [quoted image]

You left out the best part. The girl who took that photo was suspended from school for posting it.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/07/us/georgia-teen-photo-crowded-school-hallway-trnd/index.html

" A viral photo showing students in a Georgia high school crowded in hallways and with few visible masks resulted in the sophomore who posted it being suspended, she said."

The response by the school Super is pathetic, IMO. He says the photo was taken out of context. (raspberries ). Like cockroaches running from the light.

" In a letter to the community, Superintendent Brian Otott said the photo was taken out of context, writing: "Class changes at the high school level are a challenge when maintaining a specific schedule. It is an area we are continuing to work on in this new environment to find practicable ways to further limit students from congregating. Students are in this hallway environment for just a brief period as they move to their next class. ... There is no question that the photo does not look good. ... Wearing a mask is a personal choice, and there is no practical way to enforce a mandate to wear them."

" the school said she violated three conduct policies: using her phone during instruction time, using her phone during school hours for social media and filming students and posting on a social media platform.

#17722 3 years ago
Quoted from smalltownguy2:

We had a little girl not far from me walk out into a cornfield, down a bottle of pills, and kill herself. She was depressed from being stuck at home.

Your original post implied that the girl committed suicide from being stuck at home. I have seen nothing in the links you just provided that give any reason as to why she killed herself. The letter to her mom only said, “Mom, I love you, but I can’t do it. Bye,” little Kodie Ducher wrote the day before her lifeless body was found."

When you can figure out what the the "it" meant when she said, " but I can’t do it. Bye," , then maybe you will have something. Right now, all anybody knows is a little girl was depressed. Maybe her mom really knows but the papers are not saying.

Quoted from phil-lee:

It's actually the perfect answer.

When my sister and brother in law had their first house, in Baltimore, their upstairs neighbors were obnoxious college students who threw parties. My brother in law discovered the fuse box in his apartment. Whenever a party ran too long, they'd just cut the power, and the party was over. 20 minutes later after everybody had left they'd put it back on.

The idiots upstairs never figured it out lol.

So yeah, for these morons renting houses and throwing huge parties - in violation of local mandates - it's actually a clever and perfect solution. I wasn't aware the "first amendment" granted you unfettered use of electricity, but I guess I'm not up on my consitutional studies.

#17739 3 years ago

God given rights I have:

- Unfettered access to clean, safe water, to use as I see fit.
- Unfettered use of electricity, natural gas and oil to consume for whatever purpose I choose and to keep me safe during heat waves and extreme cold.
- Access to 911, even on my deactivated cell phone, to help me remain safe and so that I can receive assistance when critical.
- Access to guns....errrr.....to keep me and my family safe.

Rights apparently not overseen by God:

The right to stay safe by not having someone without a mask sneeze in my face during a pandemic.

Sturgis is an interesting predicament..

Without the bike rally, a lot of the town would basically go broke. Many businesses rely on the rally for most of their income, it's the Christmas of Sturgis. The residents don't want the virus brought to town, but they also don't want economic devastation.

Best bet is for the locals to just lay in supplies and ride out the rally at home, and let the businesses do what they must. If the bikers are going to spread it amongst themselves, they do so knowing the risks.

If everyone treated this seriously for 2 to 3 weeks and wore a mask out in public and made an honest attempt at "6 feet" social distancing... wouldn't the virus just die out and we'd be back to "normal"?

(Until the next inter-species virus or Mars finally attacks...)

What will be interesting is to look out for increases along freeways where everyone stops on their way home. Here in MN we have a number of smaller towns filled with gas stations and food that will (no pun intended) feed the entire east coast for those who ride in.
