Quoted from Who-Dey:

I do my part and wear a mask when i go out in public and that's all that I can do.

This is all that matters, and I’m proud of ya. I’d give you a hug if you were here - bring it in brother! Or maybe we still gotta do that virtually. Damn.

#16201 3 years ago

For the charts that cotton posted, be careful how you line them up. You can’t just take April 15 deaths and place it against April 15 cases. There is a lag of around 4 weeks. The case jump you see today will pop up in the death charts next month. If the charts don’t pop, then that is very good news. However you are playing with fire if you look at today’s infections and compare it to today’s deaths.

That’s where using CFR as opposed to total or daily deaths can be more helpful. To be fair, CFR does have a bit of the opposite problem, since there is a lag in recovery time too.

Personally I prefer to err on the more conservative worse case and be pleasantly surprised vs erring on the positive case and getting my knees cut off.

This is what I have been driving at in several of my responses.

Now all that being said, the CFR rate IS dropping, (albeit slowly) and that is good news. Our CFR is still way to high for celebration though and we did previously have one of the highest CFRs amongst our peers.

The People I know have weighed the Pros and Cons and found the risk acceptable, with limitations.
Everyone must wear a mask in a Commercial Establishment..Done! Its working in my section of North Carolina after the Governors edict.
The strong-arm regulations and tactics are necessary for the stupid Folks. Yeah, I know, harsh.
Another case of the few ruining for the many.
Shutdowns in this neck are out of the question. Buying and selling will continue, the Economy rules when the babies need fed.

Via observation today, I have learned the safety protocol for going maskless.

As you approach another person from the opposite direction and about five feet away, reach down and grab the neck of your t-shirt and pull it up over your mouth and nose. Hold it there and drop it while passing them about shoulder to shoulder or one foot prior.

Optional to do this procedure if the other person is also maskless.

To put it another way, my concern is that many folks are lumping all the data together and drawing false conclusions.

Keep in mind we don’t just have one big national outbreak. We have dozens and dozens of localized outbreaks with swaths of no outbreak regions.

Basically Simpson’s Paradox.

Quoted from poppapin:

Say what! You're daily new death chart shows deaths are declining. Looked like deaths peaked around April 20th

Let me ask you this: The dally new cases chart is going up. And the daily deaths charts looks like it peaked sometime back. Do you think this will last? Are new cases going to continue upward and daily deaths going to continue to come down? I don't think so, but I could be wrong. I think the death rate is going to curve back up. But it is a guess. Maybe we will dodge a big bullet and go to zero in a week or so; Seems like many think this way.

It all depends on who you want to believe, I guess. In March and April all we were hearing is that when summer gets here it will go away. Well, summer is here. And guess what is still with us. Our leader wishes for us to believe it has gone away. Are you drinking that Election Year Koolaid?

Our lowest daily death number so far has been 271. I used 500 earlier. Let's go with 271 since that looks like the low number to beat.

271 * 30 = 8130 deaths per month. Are you cool with that number?

Quoted from too-many-pins:

Until hospitals start running out of room and people start going untreated. Some areas that day isn't far away.

The running out of room is already here.

The Texas run down.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/02/health/coronavirus-hospitalizations-rates-rise/index.html

" Parts of the hospital are quickly transitioning into coronavirus units, with airtight zones around sections where infected patients are stationed. And doctors like Varon, who's worked more than 100 consecutive days now, are turning into semi-specialists in the virus.

"These patients are very sick. These are patients that are about to die. So, we have to admit them and once they are here, despite of everything that we do, they have to stay in the hospital anywhere between 5 to 10 days at a minimum," Varon said. "So sooner or later, within the next two weeks, we're going to be at full house."

Reopening schools in many states come late August or September is about as likely as the Disney parks opening to full crowds.

I'd like to see them try it.

It's just another overly optimistic pipe dream IMO. Or they will try it and when it fails, it will just be more of what we are already getting used to.

I just figured it had more to do with the median age of the people getting infected now, as opposed to when death rates were high.
That and they have found some meds to help with symptoms and recovery. Not being overloaded quiet yet probably plays a factor as well.

I drove a school bus for year. There is no way I would climb aboard a bus with 50 coughing, sneezing grade schoolers. No way.

And don't give me that essential worker bullshit. The job goes away for summer time and bus drivers don't get paid enough to live without working somewhere during summer. Some states will let bus drivers draw unemployment for summer months. Cheapskate Kansas is not one of those states. I got lucky and was recalled to my main job when school was out.

And now, the leaders are starting to talk about getting the kids to school this year. School bussing is now being talked about. They know there is a problem. Social distancing would require doubling the number of busses needed to haul all the kids to and from school.

Several possibilities being talked are that the bus driver will have to take everybody's temperature before the kid climbs aboard. You have never seen how nasty and mean a woman can get when you say her kid cannot ride the bus. Or perhaps "encapsulate" the driver behind some plastic walls. You might as well put blinders on the bus drivers.

I am waiting to see what magic happens for the schools to open up.

From what I've seen the death rate is currently lower for a few possible reasons:

1). The current group of patients is younger overall than it was back in March and April. I think this is because the older people realize they are more at risk of dying if they get COVID and so are staying home, wearing masks more, practicing social distancing if they do go out, etc. Younger people think they are invincible and don't seem to care if they get it or not so they are going out to parties, going to bars, etc. We know younger patients are more likely to survive COVID vs older patients so the death rate should be lower.

2). We are getting better overall at treating COVID with use of drugs like Dexamethasone and Remdesivir. That would also cause the death rate to be lower.

3). Remember that deaths will tend to lag cases by about two weeks. That's about how long it takes a person with COVID in the hospital to die. So, if the cases are spiking now, you can't really look at the death rate now to see if there's a problem. The death rate now is related to the case rate two weeks ago.

Overall I think a major problem is there seems to be a concerted effort among a particular group of people in this country to discount our current COVID case rate and blow it off. This misinformation campaign will lead to people not following guidelines like masking and social distancing and that will lead to more and more cases. I really am puzzled as to where the line is where this group of people will finally admit they were wrong all along. I suspect that line doesn't actually exist and they will continue to deny COVID even as more and more people around them get sick.

Which particular group?

The lives matter protestors?

Those that like to go to bars and socialize?

Those that like to attend campaign rallies?

Those that like to hang out on the beach?

Those that think science can fix this and a vaccine is on the way?

Those out of work that are running out of money and are getting evicted?

The young that think they are indestructible?

Those that think it's all a hoax?

Those that think it is impeding on their freedom?

Sorry, but can you be a little more specific Dr. Gizzard?

As far as I can tell, there are plenty of news sources and lots of information is available on the internet about actual case numbers for those that really want to know.

Quoted from PantherCityPins:

I REALLY wish people would stop trying to point fingers every which way to deflect attention from whatever behavior they want to defend.

So would many others, I'd assume.

First is the people that refuse to wear masks, that one little element is what seems to differentiate us from every other landmass as we seem to refuse to do that one basic obvious thing. Second would be those that ridicule/attack anyone that dares to even consider doing anything to stop the spread of infection because of (insert any of various absurd reasons here). See states like Texas and Florida that initially ridiculed California for what we did to stop the spread.

Basically there's people making it a point to do absolutely nothing to protect their fellow countrymen, led by people in power doing the same. Ultimately the whole thing brings on feelings of disgust and disappointment especially when we compare ourselves on the world stage.

I’m not taking your political bait, o-din. It’s pretty obvious which group is out there actively denying COVID, saying it’s a hoax, calling it a “plandemic”, saying masks don’t work, claiming that the CDC is falsifying case numbers, etc, etc, etc. If you’re still having trouble with which group that is, head over to Facebook and I think you’ll see a trend.

I truly truly don't get it guys.

Why is everything has to be about politics ?

When everyone is free and do whatever they wanna do this is what we call anarchy.

Amost every country in the world is taking this seriously and for most of the countries this confinement is behind us.

We barely have cases now and coast to coast we have like 20 deaths in 24 hours.

Why can't people look around to look at other countries and act to improve things.

Even if everyone is in denial you cannot fuck with nature.

How is it helping the economy if you can't travel in any countries or have any visitors from other countries ?

Look at it from every angles, politics, economy, freedom what is the point if you cannot do anything and are trap in this longer than anybody on earth.

Love you guys but man this is so bad publicity for your country and it's gonna cost. Do you think anyone on earth is looking forward for their trip to Florida or California next winter ?

Do what needs to be done for the greater good. You guys are a great Nation and you are not scare to wage war against any enemies, well for this war no ammo, guns or tanks are needed just protect each other.

I'm kinda surprised to learn now some seem to still have the Schools closed?? Wtf

Here, the majority of schools have been Open since early in April.

Schools have proven to be a very low risk for spreading covid19 (for whatever the reason).

We had many cases. Now we have none. The proof is in the pudding on this.

-

As we've seen in one neighboring state, letting Hotel Quarantine "Gigilo" amatuer security guards sleep with the quarantined guests IS a bad idea, though.

The very same state had schools Closed til just recently, being all "super cautious" and that, in aspects that don't matter for spread... now they have serious virus outbreaks. How ironic.

Covid19 declared war on the world. What we needed to do to win the war, is be smart.....

Quoted from Darth_Chris:

Do what needs to be done for the greater good.

We are currently at war from within. A firewall of old legislators, judges, and a puppet president are rallying a minority of citizens to defy their own government (and reality itself) using weaponized media and intimidation to uphold a notion of America’s past which no longer exists today, nor existed in the way they are told to believe.

Back in the real “Great America Days”, our citizens would have gladly worn masks and banded together to kick COVID to the curb. But any issue right now is a potential wedge/lever for the administration to pull, because they are in free fall... and have nothing left to deliver except sow division and keep us distracted while rubber-stamping as many corrupt laws and biased judges as possible on their way out.

We’ll eventually fix the damage, but it’ll take generations. Assuming we have the time left to do it, that is.
