I really feel the worst is yet to come. I hope I am wrong but once they start opening things up I think you are going to see the daily death totals more than double starting about 3 or 4 weeks later. We are still in the "red zone" here in Central PA & I drove past Wal-Mart & Home Depot on my way to storage this afternoon and I have never seen so many cars in their parking lots. Both places looked like the day before a Holiday weekend or the week before Christmas?

As I have stated in my previous post my plans are to let all the "crazies" do what they are going to do and hide at home for at least the next several months. I leave the house daily for two things: first I go over to my storage units and sort stuff. Keep what I still want - then on my way home I stop at a buddies antique mall and give him stuff that is too good to toss in the trash and the rest goes into his dumpster.

While he is closed he is working on stuff at the antique mall. So once I unload I yell in and let him know to come sort through what I dropped and toss what he doesn't want into the trash. Beyond that I have talked to 4 other people in person in the past two months. The guy who just replace our central air unit. He was working in our attic (garage access) and outside. I just talked to him to pay him & it was just to hand him an envelope. I had a guy look at a machine I had for sale - in garage with social distance & mask, a guy come grab a machine (social distance & mask) and a guy pick up some parts (again social distance & mask). I miss being around people but to me it just isn't worth the risk!

As far as food we stockpiled stuff as soon as we realized what was about to happen so we are good to go for at least 6 months. This really sucks but getting super sick or dead is even worse in my eyes. Two year from now those who survive will be looking back being glad they did what they had to do to survive. And those who are dead will not be around to see how things end. The sad truth!

So the question of whether you can get hit again is still open as sailors have tested positive again after having it once:

https://www.staradvertiser.com/2020/05/15/breaking-news/sailors-on-sidelined-navy-carrier-in-guam-get-virus-for-second-time/

It's still not clear if this is actually a re-infection or down to testing inaccuracy the first time (or second time). Lots still to learn about this.

It is actually quite common. It isn't media propaganda. I was a medical rep and talked with these doctors frequently.

Yup, 18 months for my son to see a specialist.

Quoted from rwmech5:

Another side to the Covid pandemic in Italy by MP Sara Cunial. Youtube Sara Cunial speaks truth about Covid 19. Perspective in their house of parliament from one of the worst affected countries in the world. Maybe Gates isn't a savior after all.

That chick is a hysterical wack bullshit peddler. Snopes investigated and (rightly) called her interpretation of Bill Gates' speech FALSE.

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/bill-gates-vaccinations-depopulation/

Gates arrived at the conclusion that by REDUCING childhood mortality (not killing people), you reduce population overgrowth. Seems counterintuitive, but it checks out. Read the Snopes analysis. They researched his statements well.

Hey all, if you don’t have your city and state in your profile, please consider adding it. I enjoy knowing where (roughly) people are posting from, and we promise not to stalk you. Right Pinside?

one superficially sad aspect of the lockdown is the sheer amount of stuff we're sending to the landfill. Everyone is at home cleaning and purging, but you can't donate stuff that's still got life.
Normally I help people purge and delight and diverting almost everything from a landfill. I have a pseudo-rolodex of places to take all sorts of goods + supplies where it can find new life. But not right now.
Every year our city has a "Free stuff on the curb" day, where everyone is encouraged to put stuff they don't want at the curb and everyone swoops through and picks through it. That's obviously not happening either.

It's become a bit of a hobby for me, helping people purge and find new life for their junk, and I can't wait until I can get back into it eventually.

The news recently about the Abbott quick test having false negative rates higher than realized (as high as 48%) might account for this.

But you are right, there still is a lot to learn. I wonder if those that show a 'return' of the virus on testing are also showing a return of symptoms? I've seen several of these articles now, they never really say if the person got sick again.

News from corona times in germany: Today I opend up my pub again, first time since 2 month. I did not announce it, cause I try to be careful and did not want to many people for the first day in the pub. It is a very small pub, only 800 feet². I opened up from 4pm to 10 pm, in corona times it isn't allowed to open up longer here in my village. I had 35 guests today, most of them stayed the whole time. They had fun and were happy, followed orders and were diciplined. But I felt the sword of damocles over my head, what if anybody has it and cause of me it will be spread to others? It is not a good feeling to be a bartender in this times.
Was a very stressful day, I always work alone. And now it is not only serving drinks and make small talk, there are so many rules to follow now with corona: I have to keep record of everybody, so if one of the guests will get ill over the next four weeks, I have to tell the health department, who was withthem in the pub and how they could get in contact with everyone. After a guest leaves I have to disinfect his place. Everybody has to wear masks when they don't sit down. I have to wear a mask the whole time. No one is allowed to sit at the bar, only at tables. Nobody could choose a table, I have to bring them to their table. And only people from two households are allowed to sit at one table. Only one person at a time is allowed to go to the toilett. Everybody has to keep distance from the others. No Pinball playing, no darts, dice rolling or other gambling alowed. And many other rules..... that doesn't sound to hard to do, but when people get drunk it gets harder and harder. For the first day I am surprised, I thought it was going to be terrible. Social distancing is the opposit of what I always wanted in my pub. But people were in unexpectedly good mood and tried to help me. If I want them to be safe and have a good time, it is way more work for me and there are way more costs, so I rised the prize per beer and drink, but the complaining was limited. That is a good sign. But I tried to be very moderate with the rise. A rise of 21 cent from 1,85 to 2,06$ for a 10,15 oz beer, before corona they would have tarred-and-feathered me, but I still think I am to cheap.
Perhaps, if everybody stays postive and tries to be careful and in good mood, it could work out. Tomorrow will be the big test, Soccer league will be starting again on TV. There will be fans from different teams in my Pub.
I am still very pessimistic about the future, my whole country opens up, it has to open up. But I am afraid there will be a second and thirdwave of corona. I don't know what will happen then.

I read today here in Germany they are testing now the urine of infected people for albumin to predict how hard Corona will Hit the patient. Perhaps this will help in future to lower the death rate.
Stay healthy, bye.

IIRC you are retired and run an Ebay arcade parts store. So hiding at home is easy for you.
Over 50% (give or take a few) of Americans live pay check to pay check. Many here in PA are still waiting on their EC checks to start. Many self employed, subcontractors, small business owners are getting nothing. I personally know many. Many have burnt through what little they have saved, many are racking up credit card dept. And many are on the verge of losing their businesses. They are at the point of no return. So who are you to call people "crazies" ???????? I got to say I really love the name calling that's been going on in this thread just because people don't have the luxury to hide at home of have different opinions.

I do agree the worst is yet to come. It will happen this fall. It's unavoidable unless everyone stays at home for the next year until there is a rock solid vaccine. Unfortunately most people simply can't do that and the government simply can't keep handing out money until the country goes broke. On the bright side since I am one of those people you are calling crazies I have an essential job that has let me not miss a single day of work.

Not sure how much merrit to this story or just bull shit but a fellow on Ag Talk forum says he was in NYC for 10 days in Sept then got covid shortly there after . Says had a positive antibody test . Also said the CDC shut down the Fort Dietrick viral lab in Sept of last year after some violations.

The problem with allowing wackadoo bullshit videos and posts about important stuff like pandemics and vaccines is there's a percentage of the population that accepts them at face value, and it makes more wackadoo bullshit people. So if someone is posting factually proven incorrect stuff, I'm all for asking them to delete it, and if they don't, letting the service delete it.

Damn ole Swampfire beefed that one pretty bad

It's all good! The Covid thread is always an adventure.

Tonight was kind of fun, such a gorgeous day, we went down the block around 7 and grabbed a drink at a frat bro type place that's open. Three bars in a row on that block so there were a number of people drinking and hanging outside, it was pretty fun almost like the old days! Great sliders at the bar too.

The owner owns several bars and restaurants. He says basically he's doing about 1/7th of the business he usually does but he is making some money and his landlord is being reasonable. This isn't true for everybody.

He also got his small business loan but explained some weird pratfalls with it...it was done so fast there's a lot of bugs in that system.

We might sign this guy up as an NYCPC sponsor next year, he's right across the street from the venue and is super into it.

On the bright side since I am one of those people you are calling crazies I have an essential job that has let me not miss a single day of work.

I fully understand people have to work and I wish everyone could go back to work and things were normal again but sadly that isn't the case. I don't have an issue with opening everything again what I have an issue with is "stupid". And as soon as you open everything again "stupid" is going to become "normal behavior" for a lot of people. Even with the "lock down" you see plenty of "stupid" going on. Once lock-down ends all the crazies will think things are back to normal again and mask, social distancing, etc will be a thing of the past for a lot of people.

All it takes is "one stupid person" and this virus can be spread to hundreds of people in just a matter of a week. You can't see it, you don't know you have it and can be spreading it for a week or more before you get sick (and some people can spread it without even getting sick). The only way to keep from spreading it is to stay away from people if possible.

I don't know exactly how things should have been handled, I don't know what the country should be doing next. I don't know how this mess started. But I do know a lot more people are going to die before it is over and that is very sad. Every death has a impact on not only that person but on an entire family. And now that kids are getting a "spin off illness" from it that is also very serious & deadly that makes it even worse.

We do need to "get back to normal" I just wish there was a way to do that without a lot more people having to die. And what is even more upsetting to me is this is going to have a very long impact on both the economy and a lot of the "working poor". Even when we do get back to "normal" there are still going to be a crazy amount of people out of work because business have closed permanently or cut way back on number of employs so jobs will be lost. There are no easy answers but the best thing is for people to avoid other people as much as possible until the medical community can at least find a treatment that works for this. People need to work but they don't need to have a "beach party" over the weekend. If everyone would (or could) just use a little common sense this virus would go away a lot sooner. Sadly there isn't a lot of "common sense" in people's DNA these days.

In 4 hours from now Borussia Dortmund will play against FC Schalke 04 in the german soccer league. This is one of the biggest rivalries in sport history. One of the first games after corona break. No visitors in the stadium, we call it a "ghost game". It will set a new record for TV ratings. But what will happen in pubs and private homes in the whole country? What will happen if idiot fans go to camp at the stadium?........
Perhaps this will be the first and last game after the break.
On the other side, it is also possible that without the supporters at the stadium everybody will see how boring soccer can be. Without the atmosphere of the supporters I would always prefer to watch an american football game over soccer.
Crazy times.

Just some random thoughts:

I've found myself trying to be less judgmental over the last couple of months. I'm not sure if it's working or not. I don't believe there is one right or wrong way of dealing with all this. Even five years from now, I don't think we'll look back and know exactly what should or shouldn't have been done.

My wife and I were on our daily walk yesterday and saw 12 college aged kids having a pool party. Our governor has removed the stay at home order as of midnight Sunday night, which will allow gatherings of ten or less people. Some would freak out at what we saw. Not sure why. They're partying two days earlier than they should and does it really matter that there's 12 kids instead of 10? Funny though, I still viewed them as ones who couldn't care less about any of this.

A guy posted on a neighborhood app looking for locations that require masks in order to enter. He wanted to stay away from them. He doesn't believe he should have to wear one. He had to take his son to the dentist. He was required to wear one in order to enter. He said he was glad his son was old enough to go by himself because he himself was not going in. While trying not to be judgmental, I wanted to slap him upside the head and tell him to just put the f'ing mask on for the hour or so his son would be there.

My wife and I are 65 years old and still don't feel comfortable going into a store. We use curbside pickup or deliveries. After seeing the packed parking lots at various stores and hearing the stories of masks, no masks, some social distancing, some not, I feel good about our decision but wonder how long we will continue this.

Our son finally brought his two boys over. They've been over a few times in the last two months but stayed in the truck while we visited. They used our back yard to play baseball while my wife and I watched from the deck. We wanted to have them inside. Can't do that just yet. Gordon is a diabetic which concerns us all. His mother, my son's ex, is an ICU nurse at a local hospital. That concerns us. Like I said, we're 65.

Our daughter started taking her 2 kids back to daycare a week ago. We don't know what to think of that. As badly as we want to see them, that concerns us. We've also been to their place a couple of times in the last two moths but stayed in the car while visiting. Hayes, the 3 year old, wanted a hug and when told we couldn't give him one, started to cry. That made my wife cry.

I've unfollowed a couple of good friends on Facebook. I understand both sides of the open up, keep things closed argument, but if you're going to shove either side down my throat by posting constant stories one way or the other, you're not a friend. It's no different than religion or politics.

So many armchair quarterbacks that seem to know what we should or should not be doing. So easy to have an opinion when you're not the one who has to make critical decisions.

Someone recently commented about why sports are not important at a time like this. I get it but it made me angry. We have MN Twins season tickets. We love baseball. I doubt we'll be seeing a game this year. I went to 27 of them last year. I'm really going to miss it. Am I selfish?

So many other thoughts but I'll be done for now.

Quoted from Asael:

Cause of corona this will not be allowed:

I love your updates and wish you the best of luck on the re-opening of your pub! What is the name of it?

One of the cool things about pinside is getting snapshots of life from around the world.

Quoted from PinMonk:

The navy article I linked to said the sailors reported influenza symptoms again, which is why they were re-tested.

The article isn’t super clear about that to me. One way to read it is that the sailor tested positive, but was asymptomatic, quarantined, tested negative twice, was released to duty and then began showing flu like symptoms and tested positive.

Could be that the incubation period lasts longer than 14 days (This sucks if true) and the sailor had 2 false negatives in a row. Not terribly unlikely if the test has a 1 in 3 chance of a false negative. Would like to hear PantherCityPins take on it.

Quoted from arcademojo:

Over 50% (give or take a few) of Americans live pay check to pay check. Many here in PA are still waiting on their EC checks to start. Many self employed, subcontractors, small business owners are getting nothing. I personally know many. Many have burnt through what little they have saved, many are racking up credit card dept. And many are on the verge of losing their businesses. They are at the point of no return. So who are you to call people "crazies" ???????? I got to say I really love the name calling that's been going on in this thread just because people don't have the luxury to hide at home of have different opinions.

This is an excellent argument against not having an insufficient social safety net. Citizens shouldn't have to choose between dying one way or the other.
The pandemic has laid bare how people without sufficient money are made expendable in a society that values capital over the individual.

From NYT: "Hundreds of thousands of New York City residents, in particular those from the city’s wealthiest neighborhoods, left as the coronavirus pandemic hit, an analysis of multiple sources of aggregated smartphone location data has found"

TV commercials were always hard to sit through before The Virus, now they're excruciating...
