Quoted from frisbez:

Maybe the rules regarding conspiracy theories should be changed then? They are inherently political.

By that rationale, you could say just about anything is political. Some people are just more inclined to see politics in things and/or make them political.

Quoted from DCFAN:

Would it be possible to open a virus conspiracy theory thread and keep this thread for more factually backed/documented conversation? That way many of us could just avoid a certain kind of banter.

We cannot open a conspiracy theory thread concerning covid-19. This thread is meant to contain corona information and discussion. We are not here to limit people's beliefs and thoughts on the subject, within the website rules, of course. There are varying opinions on it (as there are on everything).
A great way to get the most factual info is to look at the key posts, skip past unwanted comments, or just block/ignore certain posters you don't agree with.

The government should keep handing out free money so a gallon of milk costs $1,200.

I'm a firm believer that everyone has the right to have an opinion. Sometimes it's just difficult to understand their position.

We can just keep everything shut down till the end of next year as far as I’m concerned. That’s what the doctors and scientists say, so that’s good enough for me.

Besides, The world is in dire need of a bit of a reset if you ask me. I’m gonna go tinfoil hat here and join in on the fun!

The MAN is just horrified that we are figuring out how little we really need our precious “rich get richer” economy, and that all non millionaires are gonna figure this out the longer everything is “shut down.”

More and more people are gonna have their “Odin moment” and realize sitting around getting plastered and eating out of a trough of lukewarm filet of fishes is WAY more fun than busting their ass All day just so some asshole gets richer. The whole house of cards propping up these clowns is gonna collapse!

“WE CANT JUST SHUT DOWN THE ECONOMY!! It’s a fate worse than death!!!”

Quoted from phil-lee:

People resort to the lowest common denominator of "Not in my back yard" mentality when the SHTF. A worsening
of the current situation could lead to Counties and States having road blocks and no-go zones. This may be necessary to return to some semblance of Economic production but will only increase hostility for those who can't.

Where I live there is one road in, one road out.

The Sheriff blockaded the road on the 30th. If you don't own a house here or have a valid delivery or are required to be here as an essential part of the workforce you are not allowed in.

We have a special sticker issued by the county that is placed on your vehicle that we as residents can use to gain reentry back into the county after an evacuation. This is hurricane country ya know. Had that system in place for decades.

Anyway...……...very soon after the blockade of the road on the 30th the Sheriff's department started observing counterfeit reentry stickers. People were purchasing these counterfeits in Miami to circumvent the blockade to come down here. Some say it was to shop our supermarkets as the ones in Miami were depleted pretty quick when this thing got kicking off...…..others say it was rob unoccupied homes while the lockdown was in effect. Some people probably just wanted to come down and fish. Who knows.

Now you have to have proof of residency to get in. Deed, utility bill, ID etc...………..

Anyway....it's weird to live in a place where yes in fact the road is being policed and blockaded by the man.

Quoted from o-din:

This is how out of the loop I am now. A couple years ago another actress named Christy Mack came into my work, and I didn't know who she was even after her boyfriend told me.

I never heard of her so I looked her up.
Apparantly I’ve been living in a cave because she was an actress in the films
Rambone and Harry Twatter.

Yup, it’s an interesting game. Just finished an initial light cleaning, and PF looks real nice. Need to order a rubber kit.[quoted image]

Nice. I've owned contact a couple times now. Great artwork and colors. Love the backglass. First one I owned the alien was painted over.

I tend to agree. Expensive outdated concepts resistant to change like the Movie Theatre experience.
Old Brands like Woolrich expensive when made in USA, moving Production to Asia and charging the same prices.
Bankers play risky games with borrowed money and get bailed out by Taxpayers when it goes South.
Then do it again.
Commercial Landlords require maximum rent, go up every chance they can, kick old Tenants out. Who needs them now?
The skys are cleaner, fuel consumption way down. Traffic congestion and accidents down.
People spending more time with Family, teaching their kids instead of Daycare Mills with astronomical prices.
Too big to fail Companies? The harder they fall the better it is.
Necessities are cherished, the latest electronic gadget not so much. People debating what is really important?
200 million Sports Stars? Over paid Movie Stars, who really needs them? Madonna? She had her day in the sun.

Try to drive in to the Hamptons or Marthas Vineyard, no.
I tried to rent a house on Ocracoke Island year round, the Realtor told me unless I worked in the Motel or Food Business it was a no go. "We want people to go Home after the Season. You need a Sponsor proving you are needed"

I like living in nyc and I like my apartment. Unfortunately, however, as I have two windows facing busy 10th Avenue, everything near the wall gets covered in a fine layer of soot I have to clean one a week. The floor, the back of the tv, etc. Or don’t clean one a week and it builds up pretty disgustingly.

This last month? Haven’t had to clean it once. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t noticed and enjoyed the difference. The air is gorgeous too. It’s a beautiful day. You guys think it’s nicer where you live? The difference in urban areas is like night and day.

Gonna have a couple drinks in the back courtyard today. Have a couple friends coming over we will set up some folding chairs 8 feet apart.

The whole Country has become based on people living beyond their means, on credit and on edge.
The fall would be (will be?) difficult. It doesn't have to be this way.
Affordable Housing. Basic new cars at affordable prices, not option-loaded throwaways that require 8 year loans.
I especially would like to see the Credit Industry undergo a paradigm shift due to these events. Preying on the young, vulnerable, these maggots should go the way of the dodo.
Do we really need Realators? Change the onerous regulations so anyone can sell their own home.
So many new Lawyers graduate every year creating a glut of paid sycophants like a scab on the backs of the working class. We have plenty of useless regulations and lawsuits are out of hand.
Visa and MasterCard get a cut out of every paid transaction. No fee is charged when I use cash.
Sorry, I could go on all day. There is just so much useless crap and crooked money brokers ingrained in what should be a user-friendly Economy.

There is a little place in NC called Lowland, every night the people who work there and do not live there are required to leave and they raise the small Draw Bridge. No crime at night unless its Locals.

I tried to buy an old fixer-upper house there, no dice. Tight knit Community, you need an invitation to purchase Property.
Would bet there are no Covid cases in Lowland, need to call my Cousin..

To me it also revealed that we have zero social safety net in this country. In other places they fire up apple/google classroom app and their kids continue to do their schooling at home, their salaries are covered, there healthcare is covered, etc. Over here you are basically left completely on your own to fend for yourself. I hate to use this word because it's so misunderstood, but the difference between socialism in the USA and in other countries is that in other countries everyone has it so you are covered in panic situations and are never left destitute whereas in this country only the rich have it and have convinced the commoners that it's bad for them all the while training them with panic that going back to work is their only salvation. The only thing more insane with this setup is that many have been convinced that it's the best setup in the world. The whole thing is like a country wide Stockholm syndrome experiment that somehow continues to operate successfully.

Stroh's. You knew it was good because it came in a 36-pack.[quoted image]

In the 80’s we drank Strohs 30 packs. I had a ski boot bag in highschool that a 30 pack fit perfect where the ski boot compartment was in the bottom. Then I’d put the boots in the top storage area. Heavy as hell to load or carry but it worked out great cause the storage compartments of the busses were unconditioned so the beers would be nicely chilled when we got to where we were heading.

I always thought Strohs was brewed in Pa.
I remember driving past the brewery on 78 when I was a kid.
Just looked it up and this brewery was a contract brewer.

To me, this all falls into the supply/demand nature of a capitalistic society. This pandemic has really brought it all to the forefront. Some people, however, know how to play the game and others don't (or just won't). It's not necessarily always a bad thing, but some will certainly use it to work more and get ahead, some will do just enough to buy things and use credit to look like they have made it, and others will do as little as possible and find every hand out possible. People's motivations can rarely be changed, however.

Many also rate "success" by what work you do and how much money you make, working hard just to "keep up with the Joneses." It is hard not to...especially with constant ads, sales pitches, and a global economy that highlights what others have and what is actually available out there.

The economic impact of this has been HUGE, and it will continue to be.

Here’s a good read from ProPublica. Here’s a quick summary. It’s same stuff we’ve been talking about, but goes into some good details.

https://www.propublica.org/article/coronavirus-advice-from-abroad-7-lessons-americas-governors-should-not-ignore-as-they-reopen-their-economies

“To help you and your aides think about this decision over the next few weeks, we’ve interviewed experts and frontline officials from Italy, Germany, Spain, Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea. While they differ on the details, their views formed a startlingly united consensus of what’s needed:

- Massive, ongoing testing to detect where the disease is spreading,
- A real-time ability to trace contacts of those infected and isolate them,
- A willingness of people to wear masks in crowded public spaces,
- Reserves of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other equipment for hospital workers to handle any surge in cases,
- Reliable, easily administered blood tests to find out the number of people who have been infected. If they work well, such tests could eventually be used to identify people with immunity who could work at higher-risk jobs.”

The stock market is defiant as hell. What reality does this reflect other than pumping the markets with freshly printed money to make things appear normal? And for what?

Why aren't grocery workers getting hazard pay?

Why are we bailing out rich corporations... AGAIN?

Why aren't we funding more medical science and nurses to do additional research?

Complaining to the wind isn't any good, of course. Pardon. Nothing to see here, I guess. Just wondering what the market will look like after another month or three.

If you ever needed any proof that the stock market isn't the economy, well, just go outside and take a look around. All good?

Quoted from Mr68:

A lot of pockets of civil disobedience in our country regarding the stay at home order. Most likely more to come. I'd be really interested in hearing from our pinball friends in other countries if they're seeing the same thing.

Nothing whatsoever regarding civil disobedience or protests in the UK about the lockdown. In fact it's the opposite, people pointing out the idiots who are going out for 'non-essential' reasons. We're pretty much looking at USA and POTUS thinking WTF, unbelieving that people are trusting in the propaganda - that it's a political conspiracy and that the danger is over hyped.

My GF lives in the South of France, the reaction is more similar to the UK. People are hating fact that they intend to break the lockdown (in schools first) before there is a vaccine or widespread tests and that people, are still dying in huge numbers.

I know people in most European countries through my pinball travels, and they're all understanding and approving of the lockdown.

My sister lives in NYC and is a teacher along with her husband and live in a smallish apartment with 2 children 8 & 12. Despite having to do online teaching for their pupils as well as taking care of their own kids they are in shock at the protests as well.

The way SOME Americans are treating this is truly remarkable and a very poor reflection on the American people as a whole.

I used to have a materialistic mindset, but over time realized that it will always have me feeling inadequate since new shiny things are released constantly, only to be obsolete 5 years later.

I went on a trip to Morocco a few years ago and they were still using 30+ year old cars as part of their taxi fleets. Really makes you wonder why we are so wasteful over here in the states.

I'll leave you all with this link from the fake news website.

Maybe I'm missing something, I'm not an economist. But how does a universal basic income not increase inflation?

Government gives out basic income, pays for it with increased taxes. Companies that pay those taxes increase their prices to compensate. What am I missing?

Quoted from jp1985:

Well yes, landlords are a problem and need to be regulated heavily. Most landlords would gladly gut the life out of a neighborhood for a 10% profit increase.

Quoted from NicoVolta:

US public debt is on track to exceed its GDP by September. Once a country passes that 100% tipping point, it’s very rare that it recovers. There are only 2 ways out: inflation or default. I used to think that a US default was impossible, but given the right kind of political dysfunction, it can definitely happen. We’re in for a world of pain no matter which outcome we get.

You're missing all of the benefits and how they effect the economy and community. the reduced costs to the social services, the reduction in poverty, starvation, desperation.
The "Reagan"-style of propaganda was to always counter a public good with "well who's gonna pay for it" while trying to hide the actual math behind it showing things to be mostly revenue neutral or revenue positive, while also using it as a distraction to funnel assistance to corporations. Public goods aren't privately profitable, and so need to be demonized. If you can't collect rent on something, what good is it to an investor?
Will there be some inflation? Maybe! Will it be $1200 loaves of bread? LOL no. The kind of real world stimulus a UBI provides is nothing in contrast to corporate welfare levels.
Not really the thread for it but I'd be happy to message you links to studies / papers.

Your answer will be discussed heavily and argued by both sides over the next week.

One side is starting to talk about holding China accountable and there is 9 trillion plus worth of debt to make a claim against.

It is definitely going to get interesting and I am not confident the outcome with be decided by where or who created the virus

None of that lowers inflation though. How does a universal basic income not increase inflation?

Quoted from PantherCityPins:

Maybe I'm missing something, I'm not an economist. But how does a universal basic income not increase inflation?
Government gives out basic income, pays for it with increased taxes. Companies that pay those taxes increase their prices to compensate. What am I missing?

That's what I'm wondering too.

Correct me if I'm wrong but minimum wage jobs will have to pay their workers even more money to entice workers who would otherwise just be content receiving UBI and not work.

Then it will be the $2 menu at Mc.Donald's

One last post from me. I just now saw this. Piers Morgan is telling it like it is, IMO. I think he is being fair and balanced. Your mileage may differ.

Allow me to direct you to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing who still keep up with the demand of the $2 note. Apparently they knew something we didn't?

Quoted from NicoVolta:

The stock market is defiant as hell. What reality does this reflect other than pumping the markets with freshly printed money to make things appear normal? And for what?

It's cheaper than paying TRILLIONS in Pension Fund Investment defaults. Not saying I agree, but if some semblance of excitement is maintained, real or imagined, all of the cash on the sidelines owned by Joe Six Pack may begin to return to Equities, rescuing the Ponzi.
The alternative is a recue bill not even the federal reserve can pay.

Quoted from Mizzou0103:

- Massive, ongoing testing to detect where the disease is spreading,
- A real-time ability to trace contacts of those infected and isolate them,

Yeah, this is the kind of mess I don't like, sorry. I don't need anyone to tell me I've had it, don't need a Government Agency to test me, don't want to be tracked, none of my friends tracked, I don't need mandatory isolation. This is just agreeing to a massive derailment of civil rights orchestrated by these devils.
Early on began wearing PPE, before PPE was cool. Isolated myself. I feel I had a case of this around Thanksgiving, which means all information as to origins and timeframe are a lie.
Voluntary? Fine. Mandatory? Blow it out your hind end.

This virus has unfortunately shown just how undisciplined some Americans have become with a "no one will tell me what to do" attitude. That type of mindset has been growing for years and just finally blew with this. Then if someone doesn't like one version of the facts based on science they just find another source that tells them what they want to hear. Yes its bonkers. It's frustrating for those trying to follow the guidelines while others don't give a crap and end up putting thousands of others at risk.

At the same time millions are now out of work, stressed out, can't pay their bills, depressed, etc. Its been a very difficult time for many.

Proper SOP (safe operating procedures) can insure limited transmission at the work place, nearly any workplace. The problem comes in transportation to work if using mass transit. Also Recreation (Concerts, Stadiums, etc.) So got to work, then go home! Ride a Bike or drive a private vehicle.

Testing is useless since immunity from having Covid hasn't been proven. Test negative, touch a door handle, test positive.
Not sure where they are getting this herd immunity belief from, I haven't seen the Science.

Well. We’ve got two choices. We can institute some or all of these or we can shelter in place until we have a vaccine. Neither is great. The problem with instituting any of the plans is they require trust in our government. Unfortunately we’re at a point where partisanship is at an all time high. Political attacks by either party or partisan media only make it worse. Thankfully these decisions have been pushed down to the state level where things are less partisan. It at least gives us a fighting chance.

This ingrained in the American mindset, responsible for our successful Revolution against England and the basis for so much success for our Country.
Over the Years this concept has been challenged as best for our future sustainability.
All Experts agree isolation is not a long-term solution to Covid.
So get with the Program and create the next best thing, you have the MENSA IQ and billions of dollars, get with it.
When I see my neighbor go to work cause they are "Essential" and I could safely do my job and have to sit home?
NO.
