Quoted from cottonm4:

How about a bottle of pop?

Or just a "cold drank" (when my neck is showing a little rouge color)

Pennsylvania has a very distinct Soda/Pop line. Typically, east of the Appalachian mountain chain is soda, and pop to the west.

Now that we have brought that to light, can we also discuss this:

Quoted from PantherCityPins:

People who are talking about how this coronavirus thing isn’t that bad are like a guy who is pulled off the train tracks by a bystander before the train barrels through and then says “Hell, that train ain’t dangerous at all! Didn’t even hurt me!”

This is gold. Unfortunately the folks who deserve to hear this are too stupid to understand it.

Quoted from Atari_Daze:

just a "cold drank

Ahhh.a cold drank. That reminds me of the best tasting beer I ever drank. I 14 and staying with my grandparents. Grandpa and I were in the small pasture just behind the house raking hay. It was a hot day. Gramps said, " Go to the house and get us a beer." I brought back a Budweiser and a church key ( no pop tops ). He drank half and I drank half. A hot day, all sweaty, that cold beer was just about the best thing I ever tasted.

I am really not a big beer drinker, but like a coke head that keeps chasing his first time high, I open one up once in a while trying to get that elusive "hot day in the hayfield taste" to come back again.

even on the worst corona virus death day, it still does come close to these things that will never shut the economy down. May 1st is coming soon boys, time to put your big boy pants on.

1 day totals

26,283 people died of Cancer

24,641 died of Heart Disease

4,300 people died of Diabetes

Suicide took 3024 lives - and this rate will rise daily as the economic downslide furthers

Moreover, Mosquitoes kill 2,740 people every day and Snakes kill 137 people every day.

How would social distancing limit Cancer, Heart Disease, or Diabetes deaths? Be specific in your answer.

Sweden is the country to watch. They are experimenting withb he herd immunity theory.. early returns aren't looking too promising.

Yeah - it's been kind of mystery to me. But it was not an absolute disaster either, if you compare it to Norway (11,400 vs 6,600 cases as of today).
I have read somewhere that, while the rules are less strict in Sweden, people respect them and support recommendations. Meanwhile, in France...

None of what you list is a contagious virus like Covid19. You don’t get cancer, heat disease or depression from sneezing on someone or touching your face. Yes, deadly but not the same. There still is no therapudic or vaccine so the numbers of deaths will continue to climb until then - most likely a year and a half IF we are lucky.

Not only that, people that think a pen or tape dispenser is going to influence what drug a physician deems best for his patient, isn't giving you guys much credit. Pretty sure most physicians are smart enough to take information, read studies, etc and make a determination what they think will be best for their patients.

It's just inexpensive marketing to keep their name in front of people, that's all. Pens, keychains.....it's all the same stuff.

Just because two (or in this case many) things share a single trait (death) does not make them the same.

Quoted from Who-Dey:

He said we would be back to normal in a month or so and that's what's going to happen looks like. The President is getting ready to open the country back up. He also said that this isnt going to turn out to be as bad as what most people are thinking, well it looks like he is right about that also.
He never said this was nothing, he just said it's not as bad as what alot of people are thinking. I actually agreed with him at first and then I ended up not agreeing with him and I even personally told him that. He told me to just wait and see. Well I've waited and it's starting to look like he was right all along, maybe this wasnt as bad as what all of the experts were predicting it would be.

While I hope you are correct, my confidence level is very low.

Quoted from Who-Dey:

I realize that helps but I also realize that Ohio isn't on the lockdown that everyone thinks it is either. The grocery stores and wal marts are freaking packed to the gills. People are NOT practicing social distancing as much as you think they are. Also even the experts are saying that they dont think this is turning out to be as bad as they thought that it was going to.
I'm not downplaying anything and I feel terrible for the people who have died from this so all you downvote happy people need to chill. People die in large numbers from all kinds of things every year and you dont give two shits about that but you are freaking out about this. What's the f*cking difference????
Once again I'm not saying this is "nothing", my girlfriends friend died from this. All I am saying is it's not as bad as once believed maybe. One or two weeks ago we were all on here shitting out pants thinking we were going to die and most of us are breathing a little easier today I think. Anyone who says any different is a liar.

Once I had a goal to lose 50 pounds. Got 30 pounds into it, said to myself 'I've got this licked' and went back to my old habits. Think I got to my goal or back to where I started? Now is not the time for anyone to take their foot off the gas pedal. We need to see it through to the end, otherwise it will just keep coming back for the foreseeable future.

Unless we come up with a vaccine there is no end to this. Unfortunately we can’t keep the country closed forever. I’m in no hurry to see any social gathering places opened but strongly believe we can open a lot more then we have now without throwing a curveball in the mix. Open slow and steady.

#10223 4 years ago

I posted a few pages back that the USPS has been hurting forever it seems like and they say corona could close them up. Something to ponder on. Not saying by any means that Amazon would make the move, but would Jeff Bezos love to flex and drop some tall coin??

Pretty obvious his intent to attempt and have USPS closed down before NOV for further voter suppression and a desire to limit ability for absentee and vote by mail capabilites.

Very well put. There is no "partisan" solution to this, just one solution, and it's to do it the right way.

Everything else is just a sideshow. We are all bored so I get the allure of being a contrarian troll. Fortunately, for the most part, these people aren't Governors and won't have a say on when things "open for business" again.

How will your lifestyles change after you have experienced this stay-at-home exercise?

I am retired and I stay home much more than I ever did. However, in retirement, I would usually leave the house every day. Maybe just go to Harbor Freight and look around. Or go to a restaurant and get a cup of coffee. Or a burger and fries. Any thing to just get out if the house.

But with this virus action, I only leave the house to go get groceries. And I am getting used to not going anywhere at all. I don't think I will chance this after the "all clear" has been given. I'll have a smaller gasoline bill and longer time between oil changes; And my tires will last longer.

The tradeoff will be is that more time at home means my heating and cooling will cost more. And I am teaching myself to cook more which is not music to a restaurant owner's ears.

This is no big deal in the great scheme of things, but on a collective basis how our behaviors might/will change will have some economic impact.

Where are all of you at? Will you be willingly making any behavioral changes once all clear is given? Or once a vaccine is discovered?

I know one of the mods says he will be flying again due to business requirements.

The Economics and ethical question that is being forced on us is: what is the value of one human life?

How does one calculate it?
Here’s one way....
$25T =Current US debt (after first stimulus added $2T)
328M = “official” US Population
$76,220 = the debt value of each American citizen

What are some others?

It just seems like to me that with all the people I see jamming into the stores that we would have tons and tons of cases of this and so far it just hasnt been bad at all. It damn near seems non existant truthfully. That is what has me scratching my head about it all.

Revisit this in 10-14 days. Maybe it won't be anything, maybe it will. I choose to keep my distance and not take that chance. I'll gamble on the golf course, as I've got control over that. With this? No way, no how.

No idea. We are all going one day at a time.

I will study the available data, and of course continue to take advantage of the excellent work the main stream media has been doing and continues to do, and will make my own decision. I will continue to ignore the advice coming from the Federal Government as its all been terrible, and will look to state and local officials and determine if what they are saying jibes with what I'm seeing / reading / experiencing.

My general feeling is, just as the state/local officials were about 1 step behind where they should have been (closing everything a week or two later than they should have), I'll stick a step or so behind them when they start opening things up.

But honestly, regardless of what anybody says I'll be avoiding large crowds for a while. They can't force me to go to the movies, even if it'll help save AMC from bankruptcy.

Quoted from Daditude:

Stimulus checks have arrived for some. Mine came in yesterday, however, it was all spent on bills in about 2 minutes flat.

Sorry man. Expendable income ideas for us:

1) Save a few pennies a day. In just a few short months that candy bar will taste well earned.

2) Remember, braces for the kids are nothing more than adhesive, wire and wiring retainers. All readily available at Home Depot for 1/10 the cost of those overpriced orthodontists!

3) High priced foods like Circle O’s , Tasty Cereal Squares and Ramen Sometimes have bottom shelf grocery store doppelgängers. If not available, dent a can. Pity can be profitable!

4) Dirt is high in iron. Grass is high in fiber.

5) Camping can be fun! That’s the icebreaker for the kids when Landlord says we’re being kicked out. Make it an ADVENTURE!

#10234 4 years ago

Well yesterday sucked. Had to tell my kids we were postponing our Disney trip they had been looking forward to for years. I just don’t see how Disney World can open fully by July. I guessing if they do open it will be under some sort of crowd limit. Can’t see spending that kind of money for half the fun. My daughters dance team had planned to go to a big competition in Orlando and we were going to piggyback a week at Disney on the end. The dance competition got canceled so the writing was on the wall.

So, we will get our airline vouchers and maybe try for a trip in January.

On the positive side we decided to do a 2 week road trip instead which we haven’t done in a few years. I’m thinking Utah and see the 4 major national parks there. I figure those have a better chance of being open than Disney World.

I see a lot of people quoting articles to justify their positions as though they were the gospel.

Now, think about an article you read about something you know about - say, pinball - and think of all the errors that you noticed in that article. Yet somehow all the other articles you read are totally fine.

Given that, maybe you shouldn’t trust these articles quite so blindly. And given that, maybe erring on the side of caution makes sense.

I’m glad some of you are prepared for others to die so you can go back to the beach and eat hamburgers. That’s very generous of you. I think I’ll stay home a bit longer, thanks.

Voter fraud simply does not happen in any appreciable level, esp not at the individual level.

The research and data is very clear on this.
Voter suppression on the other hand is very clearly the tactic and main mode of GOP path to office; as clearly stated even this past week by the POTUS and multiple times over by many other GOP. Hell in WI, we were forced to vote in person last week despite Covid and all because of the GOP in control. All a ploy that backfired on them completely and WI folks dont put up for that BS.

Increase access to voting. Honestly amazed that more states are not currently working on 100% mail in voting for Nov. Seems like the clear path to vicotry is just to simply let people actually vote.

Seems pretty obvious to me. With the majority of those that actually vote going Dem (i.e. took the electoral college to put the recent POTUS in offcie despite a loss in popular; takes sever gerrymandering in many states where dems take a vast majority but dont have the representation)

Sad part is that this should not even be a political party issue. We should all be pushing for more access and ease to voting for the populous. It is pretty much as American as it gets.

Everyone votes. Election day is a holiday. That would be great for any stripe. 100% mail in ballots. Supports USPS. CO went to all mail in and it’s awesome.

FYI The national rate of voter fraud is 0.00000013%, per a Bush administration study. Voter suppression is real, for example, closing polling places creating longer waits and difficult access, creating ID laws etc etc

I can order a pizza, a Hooker, a toaster, or drugs from the comfort of my la-Z-boy.

That’s how I wanna vote too! Who is with me?

#10249 4 years ago

I have read several posts here about how people in some communities are not social distancing in stores and other pubic areas. Just a dumb thought experiment, but I am curious if that is something everyone is seeing? I am in a medium sized city around ~ 1M in the metro area and the people that I am seeing in the grocery store are being very cautious around one another. About half are wearing masks and I've not felt like uncomfortable with people sidling up close to me except during the the first weekend after the lock-down. I'm near campus and I am not the college parties that were very common before. Are communities reacting differently in more conservative or rural areas or even parts of town?
