This will be the official coronavirus thread. All others will be closed and redirected here. This decision has been made unanimously by the entire mod team.

This is being done for 2 main reasons:

1) There are too many threads on this subject and we would like to gather them together in one place to learn, talk about, and share info about this pandemic.

2) There have been untold rule violations, abuse reports, and complaints about other threads and users talking about this subject. We would like to limit/eliminate them.

First of all, I will post the official pinside.com rules below:

https://pinside.com/pinball/help/pinsidecom-community-rules

Secondly, I would like to be very clear that the moderator team would like to encourage discussion, information, and experiences concerning the coronavirus and discourage political speak, personal attacks, and other such website violations.

We realize that it can be hard for many to divide politics from this subject, but please read the rules and follow them. It is not our wish to constantly moderate posters. We genuinely want everyone to be able to enjoy this thread, converse, and hopefully learn more together.

This thread will be monitored closely. If you have any issues or questions, feel free to reach us in the moderator feedback subforum. If you feel there are rule violations, please report the abuse as well.

We wish everyone a safe and healthy future, along with many interesting/enjoyable discussions ahead.

[edit]: Please see this post for a new rule specific to this thread: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/the-official-coronavirus-containment-thread/page/108#post-5563878

Well, I suppose there's not much of a way to KNOW anyone on the internet is anything they claim to be. However, I know Daditude personally and he can vouch for my identity if he likes. Also, this is what I looked like at work today (please excuse the peeling sunburn):
[quoted image]
If that's not enough, then I guess you don't have to take my advice.

Pinball_Gizzard (a.k.a. Rick) is a personal friend of mine, and I can vouch for him. He is a doctor of internal medicine, and I am certain he is the MOST QUALIFIED person on this website to speak about the coronavirus and its' effects.

Quoted from dirkdiggler:

Just got off the phone with my dad. His friends are down in Yuma. He's late 70s, has serious medical issues, no insurance and was like, yeah maybe we'll come back in a few weeks. Just clueless

I hope he is able to stay inside and be safe. He is the exact demograph that I worry for the most.

I am curious to see what the numbers look like after the weekend. A lot of people seem to be getting out...at least where I live.

Quoted from cottonm4:

4 US states are lagging on taking strong action on the coronavirus — including Texas, the second-largest state in the country.
https://www.businessinsider.com/texas-idaho-missouri-nebraska-covid-19-responses-2020-3
[quoted image]
" Texas, which has a population of nearly 29 million and is the second-largest state in the country, hasn't yet closed schools, bars, or restaurants in the state, or forcibly limited the size of gatherings and groups...
" At a press conference over the weekend, Abbott said he believed individual city governments would make the best decisions for their communities on decisions like closing schools and limiting bar and restaurant services.
But as the Texas Tribune reported, some experts have warned that such "patchwork" policies that allow various practices across the state can lead to confusion.
It "makes people feel that they don't really know what's going on and that the people who are in charge don't really know what's going on," Mary Bassett, director of the François-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University, told the Texas Tribune."
===================
There are 3 others states mentioned in the article. It is not just Texas.

This is old info (for Texas, anyway).

All bars, restaurants, gyms, and theatres are closed in the state...and have been.
Schools have been closed for some time now, and most have officially ended the school year (they are doing it online, of course).
Every business except grocery stores has been limited to 10 people of fewer.

#593 4 years ago

Large cities and metro areas have been closed for a week or more now. Most other places were following suit, but some of the rural areas were trying to hold back.

Understood.

I have no problem with conflicting views/opinions, and I'm not a big fan of censorship.

I only ask that posters not intentionally troll or hand out misleading inaccurate information.

Quoted from vicjw66:

I actually laughed after he called me a bigot against people from Utah, just a few posts below where he posted about Californians.

Quoted from Utesichiban:

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't you the one that started boasting about how you and your state are subsidizing all of us rednecks in the hinterlands (followed up with religious slurs)? Maybe not your exact words but that is clearly how it came across.
I lived in So. California for 3 years when I first graduated from a college and still have many friends there. I enjoyed my time there and feel the weather and recreational options are great.
We still visit 1-2x a year but have no desire to live there again given the crowds , cost of living, and terrible state and local taxes.
I would have been nicer in telling you this if not for the fact you felt the necessity to pull out your superiority complex and put others down in this thread that live in smaller states.

Take it to PM gentlemen.

The news just stated again that German Chancellor Merkel did indeed test positive.
But look at that chart above. Almost 25,000 cases in Germany and only 94 deaths. That is a way lower fatality rate than anywhere else. The question is why?

Large quantities of alcohol?

Quoted from jimjim66:

Serious question, what are the rules of moderation about politics on this thread?

https://pinside.com/pinball/help/pinsidecom-community-rules

"Discuss Politics and religion: Each to their own when it comes to these hot-button topics, but they have absolutely no place in the world of pinball. Please discuss them elsewhere."

I can tell you that we realize this subject is tied into politics somewhat, so it can be a bit difficult to divide the two for some. If you quote a political leader or share information that has come from a politician, we don't find it to necessarily be an issue. If you cast dispersions about political figures or parties, you will be moderated. We want information, not bickering. If you are not sure, you probably should not post it.

#3393 4 years ago
Quoted from Who-Dey:

They should allow "one" thread where people can discuss politics. People who don't like discussing that could simply just not come in and participate in the discussion. Just my opinion.....

I will bring it up for discussion among the moderators.

It’s as if global warming has finally caved to the anti-science crowd and has given up.

It was 85° here in Texas today. I am sure we will get our 100+ days of 100+ degree heat, just like EVERY summer. Hopefully we won't have as many cases. I really feel for those that live in the big apple, though.

The home delivery places should have a “surprise item” option at check out. You select a dollar amount and they just toss in something random for that price into your delivery. Would be like Christmas or your birthday, where you get something totally random that you may have never used or tried before. Gives grocers a little boost to their revenue like a spontaneous buy at the checkout.

Thread Notice:

I truly appreciate everyone pitching in with information, insights, anecdotes, and even injecting humor. I am really sorry that some have gotten too political and it turns others off. I hope that you are all enjoying the thread, however, and can look past some of the frustrations that we are all feeling surrounding these circumstances.

I am very glad that we are able to keep this thread open to share information with everyone. It has been difficult for the Mods. Please bear with us. We truly want to be fair to all, in order that everyone can enjoy.

Please use the abuse report for anything you feel warrants it. You can also use the moderator feedback form. Heck, send me a PM...i will get back to you.

Thank you all for being part of this thread and sharing with us. My thoughts go out to you all.

Quoted from roffels:

That's the trick though - imagine everyone wearing masks, healthy or not, to prevent spread of infected droplets - that would help the greater population, right?

I would think it would help somewhat. Of course, if they are worn incorrectly...there would be little (if any) benefit. From what I understand, proper handwashing and not touching your face are the most effective things.
I would think it would be more helpful to keep it from spreading to others (if a carrier were wearing a mask properly), than healthy people wearing them.

PantherCityPins (a.k.a. The Doc) is the real expert, however.

#4354 4 years ago

Just curious, but what is everyone doing on this shut-in Friday night??

I'm watching a movie with my kiddos. We ate dinner together earlier (a real rarity, unfortunately), and played dominos as well.

When the kids go to sleep, I have Ozark season 3 in the queue to watch on Netflix with the wife. Season 3 dropped today! Yeah!

#4361 4 years ago
Quoted from vicjw66:

My biggest worry is that my 2 1/2 year old gets socially stunted because of this. I used to take him either to the gym’s daycare or the playground almost everyday so he could socialize with other kids. For 3 weeks he hasn’t been near another child. Kids need to be around other kids.

Sounds like he has the opportunity to work on his pinball game and go pro.

Quoted from beergut666:

They tried it in Denver earlier in the week, lasted a few hours until things started to get out of hand. Lines running down the block outside of every store with people trying to buy before the closures. The more you try to restrict things, the more people will panic, and it will lead to acts of vandalism too. It is in the public's best interest to keep these stores open.

It seems like pick up or delivery would be good options. They already have both here, I'm not sure about Ohio.

I have a pretty well stocked bar, and with me not drinking, I guess I could have a burgeoning business opportunity?

Machine. Some people actually get offended by calling it a pinball "table."

History
The History of Pinball in 10 Funfacts
Stories History The History of Pinball in 10 Funfacts
The story of the pinball machine goes back as far as the 1700s, and it is a story worth telling. By means of 10 funfacts this Catawiki story leads you through the rich and surprising history of the famous pinball machine!

1. Bagatelle is the ancestor of pinball. To understand the history of pinball we need to go back to France, the 1700s. It were the years of the Aristocrats, playing croquet as a social pastime. But they got tired of waiting for the rain to stop, so the French came up with the idea for a game called Bagatelle. This “ancestor” of the pinball machine was nothing more than a board with wooden pins and a ball, but it was such a great success French soldiers brought Bagatalle to America during the American Revolution in the late 18th century.

2. Pinball was officially invented in 1871It was the inventor Montague Redgrave from Ohio who turned the century old Bagatelle game into the first pinball game. He was granted a US patent for his “Improvements in Bagatelle”, which included a coiled spring, a slope and (smaller) marbles. The “Parlor Table Bagatelle” game got popular in bars, where high scores would earn you pride and maybe a free drink.

3. “The coin” helped pinball become successfulThe pinball machine became real popular during the Depression in the 1930s, due to the need for low cost entertainment. The first automatic pinball machine comes from 1931 and it was then coin operated games found their way around the US.

It's been raining all day here, so I haven't even been able to go out and walk the dogs. Between that and the issues with filing for unemployment, I am definitely feeling down.
I should probably go play some pinball to lift my spirits.
Here are some pics of my modest game room and doggos. Hopefully they bring some smiles to someone other than just me.

California has mortgage deferment for a few months, you can quickly apply online, check and see if you guys have it over there. You still own the money of course, but at least you wouldn't have to pay it for the next three months which would give you time to get your employment sorted.

Thank you for reaching out! Fortunately, I could actually get through the line to them to push my mortgage back. I will have to pay it back though (at the end of the forbearance), so I don't want to do it longer than I have to.

Quoted from vicjw66:

Correct, I got the additional amount mixed up. It is $600 additional, not $200. This could have some pretty bad unintended consequences. Unless you make a very good living, it creates a big incentive to try to get fired or otherwise become unemployed.
It doesn’t really seem fair that an essential worker is busting their ass working while someone is being paid significantly more not to work. Especially in low wage states. I think you might see a revolt among employed grocery workers. This was not well thought out at all.

Quoted from Blitzburgh99:

People who are unemployed would rather be working than getting the extra money. Why? Because they would have health benefits. Unemployed = lose your health coverage. And COBRA is unaffordable. Way more than $600 a month for a family of four.
If some folks get more than if they are working, then let’s chalk one up for the peasants for a change.

The average unemployment is about $450/week. They give "up to $600" extra per week depending on your situation and earnings from the last several months from your job.

#5629 4 years ago
Quoted from vicjw66:

In many cases you are correct. I was thinking mainly of those younger workers who don’t care so much about the healthcare or else don’t get health benefits from their employer. Again, this will be more of an issue in low wage states. They tend to be the same states that feel healthcare benefits are frowned upon. $600 extra per week to not work is a pretty big incentive for someone who might normally make $500/week total. They see their friend, who made about the same $500 now getting paid $1100 to not work, and they are going to be a little upset and motivated to join them in unemployment. We shall see.
We shall see.

That is not what is happening. It is "up to" 600 extra a week.

#5643 4 years ago

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/article/coronavirus-stimulus-package-questions-answers.amp.html

"How much will I receive?

It depends on your state.

Benefits will be expanded in an attempt to replace the average worker’s paycheck, explained Andrew Stettner, a senior fellow at the Century Foundation, a public policy research group. The average worker earns about $1,000 a week, and unemployment benefits often replace roughly 40 to 45 percent of that. The expansion will pay an extra amount to fill the gap.

Under the plan, eligible workers will get an extra $600 per week on top of their state benefit. But some states are more generous than others. According to the Century Foundation, the maximum weekly benefit in Alabama is $275, but it’s $450 in California and $713 in New Jersey.

So let’s say a worker was making $1,100 per week in New York; she’d be eligible for the maximum state unemployment benefit of $504 per week. Under the new expansion, she gets an additional $600 of federal pandemic unemployment compensation, for a total of $1,104, essentially replacing her original paycheck.

States have the option of providing the entire amount in one payment, or sending the extra portion separately. But it must all be done on the same weekly basis."

Quoted from vicjw66:

The average is much less than $450/week. I believe that is the max. From what I’ve just read it is not up to $600 extra but is $600 extra.[quoted image]

You can average it out if you like, but it is about about 450 per week. Where I live (Texas) it is 521. These are "max numbers per week, " btw.

Note it is "Eligible workers" for the 600

Quoted from vicjw66:

So I was right.

About what exactly? You said 200...it is 600. You then said 450 was below average...it isn't. You said you thought 450 was amongst the highest...it isn't. You said everyone on unemployment gets 600...they don't.

Also, the drug scene has escalated with little coverage. Apparently fentanyl laced meth is killing it- especially if you mix in a little wasp killer spray. Crazy cheap and dehabilitating. Paying people not to work and not leave home may have a larger effect on society then just boredom.

This doesn't surprise me. Unfortunately, people have different coping mechanisms. Some are exercising more, spending time with family, eating better, etc...and some fall into disastrous paths. I would expect those numbers to only rise.

The number of thefts and robberies has also risen. People in my state have taken to stealing guns.

I just went to the local Aldi store for some essential perishables. I wasn't going to go in if it was crowded, but there were only a small handful of cars there, so I went in.
Food was fully stocked, except for bread. Plenty of eggs, milk, canned goods, frozen foods, etc. Toilet paper and paper towels were still all gone. There was a limit of 6 jugs of milk, and a limit on canned goods.
All the cashiers had plexiglass shields. There were signs everywhere to remind people to keep 6 feet away from each other, and stickers on the floor throughout the whole store measured 6 feet apart saying the same thing
About half the customers in the store were wearing masks, about half were not. There were maybe a dozen people, plus 4 staff. Only a couple of customers were wearing gloves. Staff were not wearing gloves or masks.
I also noticed that the divider bars had been removed from all the check-out lanes.
That was about everything I observed.

I had a very similar experience at my local Aldi about an hour ago.

The real question is...what was their price on spiral hams?

Quoted from Coindork:

Perhaps you should remove the word “containment” from the thread title if that’s not what we are here to discuss.
That word in the title gives this thread a very specific meaning and purpose.

I appreciate your opinion. Forums are for discussion and information. That is their purpose. There is NO way to talk about this subject without varying opinions.
The title thread is to denote the topic: The coronavirus. Nothing more.

I am not going to tell people what to write or think. I am not here to make sure everyone agrees on all the same things. I am here to enjoy the website and enforce rules that have been put in place so others can do the same.

Quoted from PanzerFreak:

Anyone else notice more and more restaurants now closing indefinitely versus just being open for carry out? An owner of a local restaurant chain around my area said they will "save" more money staying closed then only being open for carryout. Then I heard this morning that my favorite local breakfast / lunch joint (family owned) is closing until this all blows over as well.

Estimates are out that over 50% of restaurants in my area (Dallas, TX) will close their doors permanently.

No, not yet. Unfortunately for my boy, he has short parents, and he's already shorter than most 11 y/o's. He loves playing football, so being the smallest kid on the field is tough for him. I guess I have time now to practice some more drills with him in the yard.

Just watched 60 Minutes. Per an interviewee, credit cards are deferring 90 days. The auto loan holder says FU!

My bank has a "skip a payment" option. That isn't new, however. When I called to ask them, they said it can't be used more than once, and all interest keeps going.

What makes this extra awesome (*insert sarcastic voice here) is that I would have had my very last payment on March 2nd...but about a month and a half before, they claimed that they didn't have all the info from 2015...yes...2015...with my insurance declarations page, so they added over $1100 to my payment. Mind you...i did have insurance, but somehow they didn't have a specific page of it from 5 years ago.........and the insurance company didn't seem to have the records from then

Please stop with your constant political grievances. I recommend not taking any criticism of the government as a direct attack on your personally.

But do contrast how various countries heeded the evolving advice of the experts and implemented changes accordingly.

Does this tele-commuting have a snowball's chance of replacing an across country flight?

Tell me this.
China has a population of 1.3 billion. The US has a population of 327 million.
Why do we suck so bad when compared to a country that has 4 times our population?
[quoted image]

Because they are lying about their numbers by flat out NOT reporting them.

#8365 4 years ago
Quoted from cottonm4:

By how much do you or anyone think they are under reporting? Thousands? Hundreds of thousands? More?

There's no way to know for sure, but considering it started there, they have a huge country that is densely populated, and they have been forcing workers to go to work...i would guess there are hundreds of thousands of more cases they aren't reporting.

Quoted from BigT:

I love disc golf!! I never heard of it until I went to college in Hays KS. Hays has a great course but there are a couple of holes that have water hazards. We would scavenge for frisbee in Big Creek on those holes. It was great until we started coming out of the creek with leaches attached to us.

It's the greatest sport most have never heard of. It has been the #1 growing sport in the world the last several years, and more disc golf discs have been sold annually than footballs, baseballs, basketballs, tennis balls, and hockey pucks combined!

I used to play ball golf, and it has completely replaced it for me. It is the best of both worlds of golfing and hiking.

If you ever head this way, look me up and we can play. I will extend the same offer to all other pinsiders that disc golf.
