Here's a story in the NY Times about a poultry plant in the South, and how the conditions are deteriorating there. We need to address these issues at food processing plants throughout the country or we are in trouble.
Some plants are paying workers a $500 bonus, but it's really an attendance bonus. By doing this they are incentivizing sick people to come to work:

Sorry but I don't know how it works in the US, I thought if you were not insured you had to pay, So if I was one of the 10 million that just had been laid off and have no money why would I go get a $2-3k Covid test.

Well on the bright side depending on where you live, odds are there wouldn’t be one available for you not to afford anyway.

I can't believe someone would actually strip a tip away from someone who is helping them out by going grocery shopping for them. That's pretty low and down right evil.

Doing nothing and trying to get herd immunity when they don’t know if you become immune. I don’t think they’re admitting it really, they have some restrictions which sounds new.

Here in Michigan the stay at home order is being extended through the end of the month. Also, as of this Saturday the governor is now banning people from going to see friends and family even in small numbers. I'm not sure how they are going to enforce that one.

I saw a friend the other week who lives on his own, his folks have the virus, and another is hospitalized by it so he literally can see no one from his family in person. We sat outside 15ft a part at his house where I brought my own lawn chair. Not sure what the harm is with continuing to do that but I'm sure some people wouldn't be that cautious so instead any visiting is being banned.

It seem like the U.S. has decided, all of a sudden, it needs to be a socialist government in everything---but health care. Four yeas ago we were told Obama Care would be replaced with "something great". We are still waiting for health care greatness to happen.

Many insurers in the US are now covering Covid 19 tests and any treatment as a result of the virus. I'm not sure if the US stimulus plan recently passed is covering Covid 19 tests and treatment for those uninsured.

Not sure who's going to pay the $30 - $60 trillion for a universal health care system in the US and if people want to see their taxes go up 20-30% to pay for it.

Edit: Sorry, I know no political talk!

Restrictions and recomendations are still the same and herd immunity has never been a strategy in Sweden because the goal is unidetified, this seems to be a common mistake by the press.
The main strategies in Sweden is to flatten the curve so that healthcare can handle the infected and protecting the elder, they admit that protecting the elder has failed in Stockholm since 40% of the death cases in Stockholm has been in retierment homes, we will see how it is handled in the rest of the country which is about two weeks behind Stockholm.

I'm genuinely curious how the math works out for others. I'm self-employed so health insurance for my family of 4 isn't subsidized in any way and costs us $25k~. Last year our federal income tax paid was $22k~. I'd take a 20-30% increase to pay for universal health care all day, our tax bill could DOUBLE and my family would still be money ahead.

Not political; our current "for-profit" system is very bloated, inefficient and offers all kinds of opportunity for cost savings regardless of politics.

Coronavirus May ‘Reactivate’ in Cured Patients, Korean CDC Says

The coronavirus may be “reactivating” in people who have been cured of the illness, according to Korea’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

About 51 patients classed as having been cured in South Korea have tested positive again, the CDC said in a briefing on Monday. Rather than being infected again, the virus may have been reactivated in these people, given they tested positive again shortly after being released from quarantine, said Jeong Eun-kyeong, director-general of the Korean CDC.

That’s such bullshit! Some people are such assholes!

I’m waiting on an instacart delivery as I type. I always increase the recommended tip on the app by a few bucks and always tip at least $10 cash upon delivery. The tip usually factors out between $22 -$25. It’s not mad money, but I think it’s fair and definitely worth it.

I read a report that Sweden reversed its decision to not enforce more stringent social distancing. They felt - at first - that they didn’t need to worry about it for certain populations and decided that was a poor decision. If I’m misinformed please set the record straight.

It’s just freaking amazing how this has broken out Nationally. Fact is, New York remains the gateway to the country. That combined with population density and sheer volume if human beings in NYC - 300k airline passengers a day through our airports! - means that we were sitting ducks.

NY essentially took one for the entire country. Complain all you want about an economic shutdown, but if New York hadn’t shut down the rest of the country Would. Be. Hella. Fucked.

Change the insurance laws and it’s not that big of a deal. Think of it this way. EVERYBODY that really needs healthcare should get it. They NEED to get it! And they should have to pay for it. In privatized healthcare, people pay way more than they should have to - because its a freaking sellers market! with healthcare, that’s not cool. Because health care has enormous social and economic implications for everyone.

Then you have the people that need healthcare bad, but don’t get it, because they can’t afford it. In a pandemic, unfortunately, a lot of these people just die. Or put massive strain on the system. Negatively impacting the people that do pay. But the broader issue is that by not getting healthcare they put the greater society and ECONOMY (for those that respond better to that word) at much greater risk...because they negatively impact health and productivity for everyone.

Bad healthcare is the ULTIMATE trickle down. In the worst way.

Single-payer healthcare isn't an "if", but a "when" for the USA. The COVID economic shock is exposing many of the longstanding fissures in our "sink or swim" system. Which, for many, still consists of "work, or die".

Actually, come to think of it, lately it has been more like "work *and* die".

I thought the Great Recession would've been enough of a wake up call, but maybe this will finally do it.

Anyway, seeing the curve flatten is good, but overall the count is still going up... and in places like Mexico, India, and Russia... it's gonna go WAY up. :/

I'm excited to see my spring blooms starting to come in. They cheer me up, and I need all the "cheering up" I can get these days.

Here's a pic of one of my roses that I took today:

Doesn't the state of Illinois stick out in the middle of the country, with every surrounding state showing lower gas prices?
Gotta love the taxes they pile on at every level (state/county/city) here in Illinois.

Take a look at the gas taxes out in Washington state. Might make Illinois seem not quite so bad. However, I have not looked at the gas taxes in Illinois in about 10 years, so maybe that has changed.

Quoted from JodyG:

Someone in China ate a bat and then 10% of the US was laid off. There, you're caught up!

Actually, I saw an interesting story that says there's a working theory that a Wuhan farmer was gathering bat dung to use as fertilizer for his crops, he was then at the wet market, where things are really filthy, and that's how this all got started. Did anyone else see that article?

Tired of drinking. Ran out of beer and went through half the whiskey. I don't like whiskey no more, the taste brings back bad memories. Tapped into the Dark Rum, it was OK but made me feel tired. Bout a few cases of Keystone Utility Beer. Just enough, closest to water I have found.
Gonna give it all up in a few days. Enough is enough.

If you want to quit drinking just buy a 6 pack of Bud. You'll never finish it. LOL
I think I still have some bud lime left over from a pinball party 3 years ago. Worst stuff there is. Can't even give it away.
