Added to my CoVid-19 facts post - https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/the-official-coronavirus-containment-thread/page/37#post-5546370

Update 4/2/2020 - This information has changed: "While no one under 20 has reportedly died and their symptoms are typically more mild than their elders, infants can get the CoVid-19 and it may be responsible for severe symptoms in the very young."

A six week old baby has died from CoVid-19 in Connecticut.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/coronavirus-baby-death-connecticut-map-us-cases-newborn-a9441331.html

Though rare, a few cases of teens dying have now been reported.

"A 12-year-old girl became the youngest person to die in Belgium, though it was not disclosed whether she suffered from any underlying condition."

The captain of the USS TEddy Roosevelt "relived of his command?" That seems odd.

Any of you military folk wanna tell me if that seems appropriate?

Detroit bus driver Jason Hargrove died of Covid 19 a week after he recorded the video below about a women coughing multiple times on the bus without covering her mouth.

The amount of carelessness and stupidity being displayed by some people in this country during this time is mindboggling. It seems like every other country in the world other then the United States has a greater percentage of people following the rules and not doing stupid $hit.

Quoted from cait001:these are the same people that want to use the coronavirus, and the shift to online classes, to identify professors that aren't sufficiently "patriotic" in hopes of chasing them off their job. There are whole websites dedicated to stalking university professors who don't meet their ideological criteria. it's sad to think that people's minds turn to that in these dark times, but as the article says, it's really a booming cottage industry to be a "citizen journalist"

Well they ain’t journalists and they’re shitty citizens. So these cretins are all batting .000 as far as I’m concerned. Problem is they both fuel and feed on xenophobia and hatred.

Quoted from phil-lee:10 second google search found 20 stories covering the mistake and apology. I do not waste my time with New York Times or Washington Post so not sure about those "News" sources

Quoted from cait001:

I'm not sure we need to dwell on "some person in the video room maybe used the wrong B-roll during a scene in a single segment". There's more than enough grim facts to focus on. I don't even know if video news bothers with retractions, but NYT and WaPo generally still do.

So true. Conspiracy’s have to have a motive. what’s the motive for showing Italian hospital footage instead of NY hospital footage? It’s the focus on the meaningless that just makes it all the more infuriating.

BTW, If you want to see a NYC hospital to see what’s really going on, well then get your ass in one. And report back.

#6665 9 months ago
Quoted from Mizzou0103:

Everyone makes mistakes. The difference between reputable and non-reputable is that the good ones own their mistakes and address them. Don’t let one mistake discount a mountain of solid reporting.

Of course there’s also those sources that make huge mistakes, then deny making them and take no responsibility whatsoever.

Just from my own observations in the past few weeks, it's amazing how society is still doing a piss poor job at taking this seriously. We've grown as a culture where even the slightest inconveniences just cannot be tolerated. This is really shaping to be a very slow wake up call for many.

I wasn't too sure about the "rumor" of the 21 million cancelled phones in China and the allusion that those are all deaths from the virus so I did a little digging...…...

AP reports this as not directly related to the virus.

https://apnews.com/afs:Content:8717250566

I'm gonna go with that. If it was in direct correlation to the virus and those were all deaths from this, that would not be a good thing. For anyone.

Quoted from Pickle:

So current numbers of recorded confirmed cases are at 1 million. Number of deaths are now 50,000. No way to know the unconfirmed/ unreported cases and deaths. But going on recorded cases that’s about 5% that die. Let’s see the numbers again in 2 weeks.
On a conservative estimate let’s say a little less than half the population of China got it....that’s 500 million roughly. If 5% die that is 25 million dead....problem is we will never no how many had it and real numbers of how many died....but we know reports of 21 million cell phones cancelled/deactivated in China have been rumored.
US numbers currently indicate a little less than 2.5% of the confirmed cases have died.
The more data we have the more we can predict how many may die.
If 2.5% is accurate and 50% of the US population gets the virus you could estimate 3.7 MILLION people may die. This is serious. Let’s hope as more data is collected we see the actual fatality rate below 1%
Only recently have we had enough testing in the US to start getting accurate data. The more testing done the more data and we can see trends. Hopefully for the better....flattening of the curve....lower fatality rate...and successful treatments!

Really the only possible outcome. Captains of warships don't let their humanitarian pleas for action find their way to the media.

On the plus side he kept his rank and did not get a Letter of Reprimand on his record.

#6670 9 months ago
Quoted from CrazyLevi:A mistakenly miscredited 4 second video clip on a morning show doesn't shake my faith in the credibility of the mainstream media.
It's just not very important, unless you really believe there's a media conspiracy to convince you that there is a crisis in NYC's hospitals when in fact it's a paradise right now. Don't worry, the NYC hospital B-roll is coming soon enough and it's gonna be horrifying. For now you can rely on the B-roll of body bags being wheeled out to freezer trucks to tide you over.
I kinda hate to stick up for CBS news as their news division is pretty atrocious right now, but I just don't think this "media lie" is worth the 2 straight weeks of play it's going to get on Fox News.

Since I’ve exhausted my ability to downvote the other guy (temporarily anyway) I need to give you an extra boost!

#6671 9 months ago
Quoted from cait001:

It's conspirational thinking. It's easy and addictive to just build narratives, like how coronavirus is fake because a few people took videos of hospital parking lots looking empty. Same thinking that brought us Sandy Hook Truthers.
I'm going to try and avoid continuing to unravel all these conspiracy slap fights in the thread (I apologize for all the wasted space in the last page,) and I hope everyone else can too, because conspirational thinking can't really be reasoned with. There's always some next exception in line to prove it to them. Some people are just too far down certain rabbit holes, and we have a pandemic to deal with.

I’ve heard that those tinfoil hats cause brain damage. Or was it the other way around?

Watching a little mainstream news tonight, NBC NEws.

Tons of footage of crowded nyc hospitals with patients in hallways for you crowded hospital porn types. Not sure how many are actually Italian hospitals but one things for sure - lots of horrible shit going on in hospitals right now.

#6678 9 months ago

Let’s watch the numbers as they keep updating and hope fatality rate drops....the unknown variable we cannot tell is how many people overall have been exposed because we can’t test everyone at once to establish a baseline. We don’t know enough to say 50% of people are immune or not gonna have effects/symptoms. Time will tell of the reported numbers are accurate. Another number that is important is the number of people who recovered. That’s a key one to watch.....

This is simple percents and ratios but data is needed. From this we can predict equipment, beds, healthcare workers, etc. needed for these situations.

#6679 9 months ago

At my work people have not been practicing their social distancing. Partly because it’s easy to forget to do in the normal course of a day, but also because there are still quite a few people who aren’t taking this thing seriously.

The other day, things were shut down for a “deep cleaning”. We were told it was just standard procedure and not because of anyone testing positive. Well, apparently that was a lie as I read about it today in the news.

IDK if this was posted already, but This is an editorial on a report co-authored by Dr Fauci. Interesting thing to note is that the 2% case fatality rate is based on cases with pneumonia. If that's true, then there are literally millions of people that do or have had this virus already.

I have a question for doc gizzard.

What about cigarette, cigar, and vape smoke? If the virus can live in the air for hours (per various reports), would the virus be transmitted in a cloud of smoke? If I can smell someone’s cigarettes from the next house, should I be concerned?

It’s sexier in Italian. And tastes better too. But yeah, pretty fucking horrible. Let’s throw some doubt on it to suspend the reality for a N.Y. minute.

No. there's no evidence to support airborne transmission like that. Even a truly airborne disease like tuberculosis would have difficulty traveling from one house to another like the smell of cigarette smoke.

Now, there's plenty of reasons for people to not smoke or vape but spreading coronavirus isn't one of them.

Well, met with doctors in our organization last night that are part of the compensation committee to determine pay cuts to productivity based docs and how we could structure it. Walked through the hospital. Absolute ghost town. Eerie. Everyone came in with masks. By end of meeting masks were off and everyone was standing around talking a hell of a lot closer than 6 feet. I stayed back to be safe. Docs didn't seemed that concerned. Hopefully the surge doesn't come. What a shit mess. I spoke with one doctor that is well respected and he thinks apex will hit in about 25 days. So five doubling periods. Then hopefully drop. Keep in mind a massive surge is considered anything more than 60 patients a day covid related.

Hi, former Army Lieutenant here. Yeah, the big issue is that the memo--with his name attached--got leaked to press. Members of the military aren't allowed to just say what they want to the media. All statements are supposed to go through a Public Affairs Officer. Gen. McArthur tried that and got the boot for it 50 years ago. The other issue is that the current state of readiness of a US Aircraft carrier is classified/sensitive information. If he'd sent the memo via SIPRnet (secret internet), then he'd have been fine, or if it had been leaked anonymously without specific names and details, then he'd have also probably been fine.

Never served on a ship, but if it's anything like a battalion/brigade command, then the replacement of the Commander of the ship shouldn't be that huge of a disruption in the day-to-day operations of the vessel. His XO would likely take over, and the rest of the chain-of-command would remain the same. It would affect some of the top-level people in the command, but it really wouldn't necessarily be the huge deal that some congressman are making it out to be. For a while when I was in Afghanistan, it looked like our BN CMDR was gonna have to switch out for medical reasons, and it would have basically been business as usual for most of our task force. In fact, we were hoping it would happen because our XO was a lot more even-tempered! It's more complicated than that, of course, but that's the general gist of it.

So do you attribute the quietness to lack of elective surgery? Fewer accidents/ crime related injuries? Fear of visiting the Emergency room?

Just because they were all singing doesn't necessarily mean the virus was transmitted airborne. Respiratory droplets can be created when coughing or clearing the throat. In addition, singing itself is a very different activity vs talking. There is much more air being forced from the lungs so you could consider the possibility that a higher amount of virus was placed into the air. There are cases of physicians contracting coronavirus from intubating a patient or doing a bronchoscopy where large amounts of virus is put into the air. Similar situation.

Also a choir is in very close proximity to each other and likely are touching each other or common surfaces intermittently which is another possible mode of transmission.

Largely due to the state mandate that only covid related procedures, consults, appointments are allowed unless absolutely necessary. Telemedicine can also be attributed as people will call in for their primary care needs. However, those are still billable.
