First corona death in Finland today, an elderly person.

#555 4 years ago

Just got back from my weekly Saturday morning grocery run. I go to a Walmart Supercenter in a town of about 10000 population. Last week everything was normal other than no cleaning products or TP. Today there were about double the people at 7 AM that I see when I normally go at 8. It was about 80% empty shelves. No bread, eggs, butter, cereal, TP, pizza, meat of any kind. Very little lunch meat. There were a few cans of soup, maybe 5 different ones where there are usually 50+. I saw three people wearing masks. Here's pics of cereal and lunch meat (stuff that barely sells anymore during normal times).

I asked the cashier why she didn't ask me if I found everything I was looking for like she does every other week. She said she's not falling into that trap.

Quoted from RWH:

I so look forward to the day we can all breath easier. The toll that has befallen families all over the world is so tragic it becomes harder each day to believe in our hopes for brighter days.

Interesting. In the span of a few posts, I am seeing this thread morph into a condolences thread. Not passing judgment. It is just an observation and I wonder if it will become a trend.

Quoted from Zablon:

The more we learn, the more I think it was here longer than we thought, before Wuhan became widely known. I am really beginning to think both of us had it in early Feb. I had the mild symptoms that lasted a few days, and the wife had it bad, could barely breath, was wheezing, couldn't get her to go to the doctor...lasted for 2-3 weeks. I was convinced we did not have the same thing, even then. Of course we just assumed she had the flu and I a cold..and maybe it was. My grandmother said she got something bad recently, and they said it wasn't flu but they didn't know what it was (didn't test her for corona). Who knows...

Glad you are finally starting to realize that this virus has a 3 month head start on us.

I don't think it hurts to have empathy for people whom are losing loved ones. I can tell you should my wife contract this they will have to physically restrain me to the point of serious injury to keep me from being with her if she's actively passing or hope is gone.

I keep dropping this one in threads to lift some spirits but like most video links on pinside, only 1 out of 1000 people actually watch it.

Truth is guys no one knows for sure how long this virus has been amongst us and likely never will, we can only move forward from here and provide whatever support others may need from us.

That picture of the trucks with coffins from Italy... now that is some pre-Armageddon-post-apocalypse scary shit right there... and we are two weeks behind them? Must be some kind of “shake off the fleas” moment for planet Earth.

#562 4 years ago
Quoted from Bublehead:

I like the name of the thread, containment. Problem is, we havent. As a former nuc radiation worker, I have to say, containment is defined as think of all the ways it can get out, now, stop it from doing that. Are we doing that?, I rest my case on containment. We are in damage control now, folks. Triage is needed. We need to think of all the ways this could be transmitted and do something to stem each way. Lets get on the problem and stop arguing on why we should or should not take head and do the human race survival steps we need to. If we treasure the ones we love, for thier sake only, we should do this.

I find it interesting that both of our borders are now closed. North from Canada. South from Mexico. Only trouble is is that the virus is already here. I guess let everybody get stocked up on food and other basic supplies and shut the entire country down. Except for essential services, which looks like it will become a growing list.

Some positive news from Georgia. I think people are staying away from restaurants, even though they aren’t closed yet. After 8 days of eating at home, my wife and I went to our local Cuban restaurant at noon yesterday. Normally there are people lined up waiting for a table on Fridays. But there was only one couple in the restaurant besides us. We sat about 20 feet from them, and service was strangely normal (no changes to the menu, great service as always). I bought a $100 gift card on the way out. We were as careful as possible of course. We washed our hands coming in and leaving, and I washed my credit card when I got home.

I think people are getting hung up on this being an “all or nothing”. Yes, we should stay home as much as possible. But a 90% isolation approach is much better than ignoring the virus entirely.

So everyone should practice "social distancing" except when it's inconvenient or it gets a bit boring?

I wonder how that's going to work out for us?

I never gave it a lot of thought, but truck stops are considered essential services.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/21/cars/truck-stops-coronavirus/index.html

So, medical field. Which includes hospitals, medical devise makers, mask makers, rubber gloves, PPE suits and hoodies.

Grocery stores. If truck stops can stay open then will all of the gas stations remain open as well?; If some people need to go to work they are going to need gas, so yes to gas stations.

People who die need buried. No funeral, but the grave diggers can't be away from work.

If the trucks are rolling then the roads are open. To keep people corralled could we see law enforcement barricading highways and we would need some sort of ration stamp that says we can be out and about?

Lots of questions. No answers. But it sure appears that if we can't shut down better than what has been done so far, this thing is just going to linger and no one knows for how long.

No easy answers.

4 US states are lagging on taking strong action on the coronavirus — including Texas, the second-largest state in the country.

" Texas, which has a population of nearly 29 million and is the second-largest state in the country, hasn't yet closed schools, bars, or restaurants in the state, or forcibly limited the size of gatherings and groups...

" At a press conference over the weekend, Abbott said he believed individual city governments would make the best decisions for their communities on decisions like closing schools and limiting bar and restaurant services.

But as the Texas Tribune reported, some experts have warned that such "patchwork" policies that allow various practices across the state can lead to confusion.

It "makes people feel that they don't really know what's going on and that the people who are in charge don't really know what's going on," Mary Bassett, director of the François-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University, told the Texas Tribune."

Here's the difference between an 'essential' business and a 'nonessential' business as states and cities announce coronavirus-related closures

https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-a-nonessential-business-essential-business-coronavirus-2020-3

( There is another list of essential list of services that I have seen and cannot find. This list looks like the entire country is staying open).

These are the haves.
--------------------------------------------
Supermarkets and grocery stores
Big-box stores
Pharmacies
Convenience stores and discount stores
Garbage collection
Healthcare operations
Daycare centers
Hardware stores
Gas stations and auto-repair shops
Banks
Post offices and shipping businesses
Veterinary clinics and pet stores
Farmers' markets and food banks
Businesses that provide necessities to shelters and economically disadvantaged people
Educational institutions, for the purposes of facilitating distance learning
Food processing
Agriculture
Feed mills
Warehousing, storage, and distribution

EDIT: Not mentioned: Airports and aircraft. If anything should not be open, I think all flights need grounded, but it will be suicide for any leader who pulls that plug.

And these are the have nots
----------------------------------------

Theaters
Gyms and recreation centers
Salons and spas
Museums
Casinos and racetracks
Shopping malls
Bowling alleys
Sporting and concert venues
These are businesses for which the category varies by region:

Restaurants and bars
Liquor stores
Hotels and commercial lodging
Laundromats and dry cleaners
Industrial manufacturing not related to essential function
Businesses that allow other businesses to stay open
Construction
------------------------------------------------------

Some one else brought up liquor stores and it is being said the alcoholics will not be able to handle going cold turkey.

And I imagine some young parents without a washer and dryer at home will take exception to the laundry mat being off limits.

I suppose barbar shops would fall under the classification of salons. I need a haircut but am not comfortable going to any barber right now so I guess it does not really matter.

EDIT: The have nots consists of many businesses that are in the recreation industry. We may get a very good chance to see how much recreation contributes to the economy. And half of the recreational items are things my preachers called "living in sin" 50 years ago.

When I lived in Dallas in the 70s, Texas had what were called Blue Laws. What that meant was only essential items could be sold on Sunday. You could buy gas, but no booze (it you lived in a "wet" county); Grocery stores could remain open for essential items, but most aisles were roped off. The beer aisle was especially closed off. If you did not stock up on Saturday you were SOL.

Quoted from silver_spinner:

italy is at 9% death rate, thats scary, not to mention that does not include people who have died before testing so its "official".
also, then figure how many people are serious enough to need hospital attention (if avail) even if they finally recover.
baffling numbers.
right now, the CDC stated in the USA, people ages 24 to 54 , 40% are ill enough to need hospital attention.
That is much higher than what was led to initially believe.

It’s because the only data we had was primarily from China. I don’t put much stock in the accuracy of any information that comes from China and reports that new cases there are almost at 0 are being contradicted by leaks throughout their country and the media. Apparently the notion that China is getting back to work and that the decisive action of their government beat the virus is highly questionnable and may just be CCP propaganda.

This is old info (for Texas, anyway).

All bars, restaurants, gyms, and theatres are closed in the state...and have been.
Schools have been closed for some time now, and most have officially ended the school year (they are doing it online, of course).
Every business except grocery stores has been limited to 10 people of fewer.

More than one person dying every hour from Coronavirus in NY......not good!
https://www.foxnews.com/us/coronavirus-killing-more-than-a-person-an-hour-in-nyc

How on earth are cities like New York and Seattle not already under federal quarantine and lockdown? They’ve continued to allow flights in and out of these cities over the past few weeks which has significantly contributed to spread all over the country including my state.

This will be looked back on as a huge failing of the feds to take tough, decisive action early enough and to do enough domestically. Blocking flights from a Europe but not doing the same for hotspots in the US was ridiculous and something that never made sense to me.

Quoted from Wickerman2:

Read we need 3.5 billion masks and feds have “plans” to buy 500 million...soon?

American industry ramped up production of vital war equipment and supplies during WWII. I cant understand why the same can’t be done to make basic items like medical masks and vital medical supplies right now. Have we really outsourced so much manufacturing to China that we can’t even rush items like medical masks for our own needs?

China will do little to nothing to help the US right now. Their government appears to be looking at this as an opportunity to spread their influence in Europe and and other countries traditionally in the US sphere of influence. The crazy propaganda being spun by their government right now that COVID19 was made by the US military and planted in China unfortunately paints a pretty clear picture.

Large cities and metro areas have been closed for a week or more now. Most other places were following suit, but some of the rural areas were trying to hold back.

I just got back from running an errand and I haven't left our property in 7 days prior to today. It doesn't seem like people are staying home? Even with restaurants and bars closed inside here, there were a TON of people out today.

There have been a few posts on nextdoor from people who can't find pet food already.

My family is about to begin another stretch of staying in as much as possible. I hope more people do.

A month ago I was called “hysterical” for being concerned about hospital bed shortages. Now I’m being called out for not being perfect. We make a thousand decisions a week, and they won’t all be right. The good news is that we don’t all have to be perfect to make a difference.

#598 4 years ago

Can we start a sticky thread for small arcades without an online business so we can buy any merch they might have? It has to be rough without the foot traffic.

Wow just read an article where some WV teens were going around to grocery stores and coughing purposely over the vegetables, video taping it and putting it online.

WTF can be running through their heads.....hope they get just desserts.

It's not convenient for any of us to voluntarily miss out on all of the things we enjoy like going out to eat or play pinball on location. I don't blame you for wanting to do those things. I want do do those things too!!!

When you go out to eat at a restaurant, the waitstaff is within 2 feet of you (or closer) and is breathing all over you. And you and everyone else who's gone in to eat that day, are breathing over him/her.

People with flu can spread it to others up to about 6 feet away. Most experts think that flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/spread.htm

The flu virus might be spread not only by coughing and sneezing, but also simply by breathing, researchers say in a new report.

That may not sound surprising, but the common wisdom among flu experts has been that flu was not an airborne virus but only spread by fairly large droplets, from coughing or sneezing.

The new study found clear evidence that influenza patients breathe the virus out through their mouths and noses in tiny particles that can stay suspended in the air for minutes or hours.
