Quoted from EJS:

Here's some food for thought.
Have you ever had the media cover something you are an expert on? We can use pinball for example. Usually they will need to report or regurgitate the information the host of a pinball event is being provided to them. Even that or other topics have you caught them slipping up or missing some information?
It makes you wonder when they cover a topic you are NOT an expert on how much accuracy is lost or left out. Not putting anyone at fault or accusing them of lying.....just an observation.....things happen.

I see where you are going. Learning from a Textbook or Classes makes an Expert, as well as life experiences. Media is not
and never should try and be Teachers. If they do to ceases to be News and becomes Commentary. It is when Commentary
and opinion combine with Agendas to create the drivel that passes for News we end up with a problem. A media report on a Pinball subject goes straight to the Entertainment category.
If I am intrigued by something I do not know much about I study non-biased sources.
Todays Media wants to control and sway Public opinion, it no longer is working. Their Business plan is a fail.

Seems like business as usual here near Scranton Pa. I was just at Home Depot because I needed parts to fix my toilet, only reason I was out. Here in the parking lot is this big lady with a cigarette hanging out of her mouth, her 70 year old mother standing in the parking lot looking confused and the lady is waving to some workers who are about to load some flooring into her car. We have people here hanging out in places like this (children include) because they do not know what else to do or where to go. I own an electrical business, I had a lady call me and ask to have spot lights mounted on her house. I had to explain to her that we are currently limiting our work to emergency only or work pertaining to the medical field. Never even heard back from the lady saying thanks or I understand, nothing.

Reuters and AP are both pretty dry. NPR and BBC can be as well, although people mistake their refusal to report bullshit as "leaning left."

I have Friends at WUNC and the local NPR outlet, nice people. Most of them Graduated from UNC. You can bet your Bippy they have a certain bias.
The AP used to be dry but even that source has Joe"Opinion" Blow bias slipping in.
Can't stand Hannity and the other Pundits masquerading as Reporters at Fox either.
Give me a kid with a cell phone in donetsk anyday.

im from illinois..i got a collection of these kind of notes while on vacation to other states..they come in green during packer season on the border towns

Please share an example of where you find this?

It doesn't exist. That is why the first Group who creates it will get rich, everyone will sign up. I mean, I try to
read those articles you link to but frankly every one of them is biased with a slanted agenda. Can't stand it anymore.
Nothing personal, many have been very informative. It's all good.

Quoted from TheFamilyArcade:

We don’t need the media to “report” on Pinball. And other like things. We need the media to report on world events that truly impact and shape the world as we know it. There is good media and there is bad. Frankly, to me it’s always been pretty easy to tell the difference. And a wise person chooses to invest their time in sources they believe are doing all they can to shine sunlight - a disinfectant of sorts - on all the hucksterism and absolute BS the world is told by people with truly something to gain by the truth being buried or discredited.

Right. It’s really not important to me if “the media” gets it 100 percent right on stuff like pinball or theme parks.

Their job as serving the public is getting the important stuff right. And they’ve done a great job so far this crisis, much better than others who we are supposed to rely on for important information.

If we’d taken more seriously all the so-called “media fear mongering” in January and February, and acted then, we’d have been way ahead of the game now instead of playing desperate catch up.

Damn Caronavirus. It's my wife and I's 21st anniversary and we usually go for dinner and hit the casino. This year it's frozen pizza, beer and cribbage.

It's also our best buds 13th birthday today. Made him some cupcakes

Probably more the authoritarian, the lack of real numbers, and somewhat masks - but keep in mind they had mask shortages too..

Quoted from jamesmc:

I've been looking forward to dispensing some Coca (leaf) Cola (nut) syrup some day. They would pour to syrup line, and then add hot water. Says delicious, exhilarating on one side and refreshing and invigorating on the other. I want to be invigorated. They used these dispensers until the 1930s, but I believe stopped using the coca leaf cola nut syrup formula around 1914. This is a 1973 replica.[quoted image]

Replica or not, that is pretty cool.

Wanna thank u again
Thank you for keeping a level head on ur shoulders while i “tilt” mine in frustration
Thank you for ur dedication to ur field to be able to look past the anger and political chaff
Thank you for keeping ur head above the water while at times I just want to drown
Thank you for still being on the job while being off your job.
Thank you and those in your field who somehow manage to stay positive when it’s far easier for most to be negative
Thank you guys for sticking with it while sometimes I just feel stuck

The kind action of you simply being here for us gives me hope that my despair may just be an a overreaction
It’s gonna be ugly, Its gonna be sad......but it isn’t over yet

Hey man, thanks so much! Sometimes in life you are put in a position you really never wanted to be in but you have a skill set that is needed at the time. That’s kinda how I feel right now. Thank God here in Texas we aren’t in dire straits yet but it looks like it may start to hit the fan here next week if the models and predictions are correct.

I just am praying for the docs, nurses, techs and all the support staff in New York, New Jersey, Detroit and New Orleans. They’re in for a hell of a ride in the next two weeks.

#6371 4 years ago
Quoted from EJS:

Here's some food for thought.
Have you ever had the media cover something you are an expert on?

Or see something technical (like a manufacturing process or computer hacking or medical machinery or suppressed sub-machine gun firing) depicted in a movie and think “it’s not like that!”

Does anyone know if there is a term or word for this type of realization?

Given the names for concepts like “Peter Principle” or “Occam’s Razor” or Dunning-Kruger Effect” I’m confident there must be a word that applies to the type of situation you are describing... and I would really like to know what it is.

The forecast says rain the next 12 days straight here in North Texas! That might keep more people inside. Of course, meteorology is the only job where you can be right 1/2 the time and still be employed...

Seconded on the thank you's to you, Gizzard... and please be cautious. Texas has been extraordinarily nonchalant about the status quo. Katy Trail still full of people & not much changed behavior overall.

Not good.

I was just going through my workshop and came across two unused N95 masks. Seem like conflicting information on whether they are useful to the average Joe like me walking through the grocery store. I saw a bunch of people in regular old surgical masks today when I went to stock up.

Once this things finally ends I think people (and their family / friends) that come out unaffected are going to have some of the best get togethers and parties of their lives. The next vacation people take will be more special, the next large family get together will have more meaning, and hell I wouldn't be surprised if Pinball Expo 2020 (hopefully still occuring by then) and Texas Pinball Festival 2021 will go down as two of the best pinball expos ever. Hope everyone stays safe and healthy!

I think you might be missing the point that was trying to be made.

The point was that journalists are generally not subject matter experts on everything. So errors and misunderstandings might be included in an article when they are writing about a subject that they are not an expert in.

If you have ever read an article reporting on pinball, you could probably pick out a handful of errors. Usually minor, but obvious to a subject matter expert (ie, pinball enthusiast).

So, with that perspective in mind, the point was to view articles written on other subjects in the same light. A lot of the significant items in the subject of an article are probably correct, but it's likely that there are minor errors that go unnoticed by readers who are not subject matter experts.

The N95 masks are the better ones. People are being told not to use them because they are what doctors need. They don't want everyone trying to buy them. If you have them already and they are all you have then use them. If you also happen to have surgical masks, then use them instead and donate your new N95 to the medical field.

Non at Sobeys today when I went.

#6393 4 years ago
Quoted from NicoVolta:

Are the masks helping, or is it the authoritarian restrictions? Or both?[quoted image]

I think it's both and then some. Those countries are very diligent/proactive. They treat a positive test result like a criminal investigation which works really well until your resources are overwhelmed.

#6394 4 years ago
Quoted from Rondogg:

Test for antibodies could be a game changer.

It's all about this. Finding those antibodies not only leads to a vaccine, but having a quick home test that has been used for other diseases (read an article earlier on it, can't find it now) would tell you if you have had corona virus already.
That would be a way for people to be able to get back to work without fear.

About a month ago I had a few days where I had deep aches in every joint in my body and low grade fever, felt dizzy at times and a bit of a cough. Did I have it? I'd love to know.

None at my local Target this afternoon. An associate told me your best chance is to show up really early. Lysol and TP are the 2 things I consistently can't find.

I regularly watch the skies with my flight radar app and I am pleased to see commercial flights over NA lessening more every day. We live on a flight path and also noticed a massive decline in air traffic.

What is interesting is the amount of cargo freight up in the air at any given time. It’s like every single cargo jet is operating non stop 24/7 to deal with global supply chain demands. Makes a lot of sense when jet fuel is so cheap.

#6398 4 years ago
Quoted from NicoVolta:

Likely the smaller geography and singular government is a big part of the speed of controlling the virus for Japan, Singapore, S Korea, and Hong Kong.

Yes, and does anyone know if there is a term for this phenomenon?

#6400 4 years ago

Agreed. Using pinball was maybe not the best example. His point was simply errors exist at all levels of reporting. I notice errors in reporting with train derailments and accidents all the time.

Speaking of trains, that incident in LA with the train and the USNS Mercy is unreal and a good example of pure stupidity. Railroad workers go through very strict screening before getting hired. The engineer clearly was not mentally stable and was responsible for a very bad incident that could have been much worse. I have to go through yearly Homeland Security training because the railroads are unfortunately not very secure, they are just too vast to efficiently protect. It’s really unfortunate that this incident came from within.
