The more we learn, the more I think it was here longer than we thought, before Wuhan became widely known. I am really beginning to think both of us had it in early Feb. I had the mild symptoms that lasted a few days, and the wife had it bad, could barely breath, was wheezing, couldn't get her to go to the doctor...lasted for 2-3 weeks. I was convinced we did not have the same thing, even then. Of course we just assumed she had the flu and I a cold..and maybe it was. My grandmother said she got something bad recently, and they said it wasn't flu but they didn't know what it was (didn't test her for corona). Who knows...

I like the name of the thread, containment. Problem is, we havent. As a former nuc radiation worker, I have to say, containment is defined as think of all the ways it can get out, now, stop it from doing that. Are we doing that?, I rest my case on containment. We are in damage control now, folks. Triage is needed. We need to think of all the ways this could be transmitted and do something to stem each way. "Thus far, results from more than 100 patients have demonstrated that chloroquine phosphate is superior to the control treatment in inhibiting the exacerbation of pneumonia, improving lung imaging findings, promoting a virus-negative conversion, and shortening the disease course according to the news briefing" (text extract from Biosci Trends, 14 (1), 72-73 2020, published March 16)

Not sure if the dosage was the same for all trials. They noted
"Severe adverse reactions to chloroquine phosphate were not noted in the aforementioned patients" '(same source)

However, ***PLEASE READ THIS***: "the margin between the therapeutic and toxic dose is narrow and chloroquine poisoning has been associated with cardiovascular disorders that can be life-threatening (Frisk-Holmberg et al., 1983). Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine use should therefore be subject to strict rules, and self-treatment is NOT recommended." (taken from Antiviral Research 177 (2020) 104762).

In addition, these authors are cautious / skeptical for the following reasons:
"no data has been provided yet to support this announcement. Results were produced in ten different hospitals and possibly from a number of different clinical protocols among those listed above, which include various designs for control groups (none, different antivirals, placebo, etc.) and various outcome primary indicators. The final in- terpretation is therefore technically demanding, and in the absence of published data, it is difficult to reach any firm conclusion"

I found one reference where tested at 2x500 mg / day. Abstract published a few days ago (full paper is in Chinese and I have no idea how many patients were involved in this specific trial).

And now the reason why scientist are cautious about these results.

It usually takes months to publish a scientific paper (tell me about it!) and months as well to set up a clinical trial. You need to make sure that each group is similar (in terms of age, severity, comorbidity factors... read the criticism posted above) if you are going to compare different treatments.

Here everything was rushed, from the trial to the publication. Some standard procedures were probably abandoned, given the emergency. Peer-review was definitely lightning fast. Peer-review is a quality control process that make sure fatal errors are avoided (and still, even after a long peer review, you may find mistakes or fraudulent results but that's another story).

This does not mean these results are wrong, I am just explaining why scientists can be a bit uncomfortable.

also, when people die from it BEFORE they are tested, those numbers are NOT included in the covid-19 death toll. So, it goes both ways.

I lost my mother on February 5 this year from... the flu. Doctors had time to warn me she would probably not make it, although she was a fighter and in good health before. But the flu (we are sure of that - influenza virus tested and confirmed; it was not the coronavirus) evolved into a severe respiratory syndrome, not too different from what coronavirus patients experience. Not fun, believe me.

It was tough but I consider myself fortunate now.
I was fortunate enough to be by her side the last week and 24/24 the last 3 days, and I could prepare a proper burial for her the week after.
I feel for those who can't.

I have to address some misinformation out there. There have been folks in this forum and others posting that they are hearing about quarantines, military actions, and the like from family members or friends of a friend. I think these folks are well intentioned in wanting to pass along info but ultimately wind up causing more unnecessary panic and churn. Please, please folks, consider what you are posting before you post it. And readers, please verify the information and the source before your consider it a fact. I get that people are scared, and these are indeed serious times, but let’s all try to maintain our heads as best as we can. Together, we will get through this.

The World Health Organization released some tips to cope with everything going on. Motherhood and apple pie stuff, but good to keep in mind.

Eat healthy to boost your immune system.
Limit alcohol and sugary drinks.
Don’t smoke. It can exacerbate COVID-19 symptoms and increase your risk of getting seriously sick.
Exercise for at least 30 minutes a day for adults and an hour a day for kids.
If you’re allowed to go outside, go for a walk, run or bike ride while keeping a safe distance from others.
If you can’t leave the house, dance, do some yoga or walk up and down the stairs.
People working from home shouldn’t sit too long in the same position.
Take a 3 minute break every 30 minutes.
Get your mind off of the crisis. Listen to music, read a book or play a game.

After I finish my coffee, I'm headed to Momma- in-laws to put the UV-C light in her HVAC unit. The price on UV-C lights has gone up over 200% in a week.

Wife just got the news early morning that all the satellite clinics in her network are closing and she has been assigned to a main clinic (internal medicine doctors represent!). Every two weeks the network will re-evaluate the situation. Current plan is that by closing the satellites and taking their supplies, they can extend the available PPE for a few weeks.

We haven’t seen a surge in hospital care here yet. Expect that to change soon. Clinics are swamped with scared sick people though.

Bad news is she will be working 12 hr shifts in the respiratory clinic with 3 30 minute breaks. One week on, One week off. The limit in breaks is to preserve the PPE as well as push through patient load. So for a week at a time she will not see her kids for more than an hour a day (in the morning when they wake up).

I know there are folks out there in other fields used to this kind of schedule, but it’s a brave new world for us. Country doctor primary care routine is much more our style.

They have also said they plan on paying “something” come May 1st. An improvement from a few days ago of “nothing”. I suspect that something comes from whatever the fed state and local governments can scrounge up.

Also, as an aside we feel for her nurses and support staff. They are considered non essential and are being put on one or two day a week work to keep them employed but not really pay them.

Agree with the above. I think the bottom line on chloroquine for now is that it’s possible this drug may prove helpful in treating COVID-19 but the therapeutic window is fairly narrow and some of the side effects could be disastrous in an already critically ill patient. More data will certainly be coming on this.

I'll speak to hydroxychloroquine if we want, or the chloro, or quinine, or whatever. People in Nigeria have been overdosing, taking it as a prophylactic. It costs about 4 cents per dose (widely available, malaria) there while it's over $5 per pill in the US.

True, I had purchased a box many months ago and always have on hand when handling meats, cleaning the BBQ or picking up after the dog. I did see alot at the local Crappy Tire about a week ago, I bet they are all gone now.

Seriously do not get the hoarder mentality. I saw this lady with her shopping cart filled beyond max. I walked by and said can you fit anything else in there? Most of that stuff is going to go bad. Unbelievable!!

I was at Walmart in Lloydminster and North Battleford this week and both had full shelves of rubber gloves. No TP, wipes or flour but gloves are easy to come by.

I think a lot of people are hoarding now because they don't know when they'll safely get back to a grocery store to get more food. Are you "social distancing" if you're roaming around a packed grocery store, looking for what's left on the shelves?

If you have the option in your area, look into grocery delivery or pick-up. My local store Woodmans has a pretty decent website for creating orders for pick-up, but right now (as expected) they are swamped with orders. Amazon Fresh, offers delivery, but I have not seen any open delivery dates this week. I'm guessing most services (delivery/pick-up) are swamped right now.

Hopefully the stores are able to ramp up employees and logistics, because that would really help to eliminate the chance for spread.
