I’d buy this sight unseen AP. Do it.

The game has a vertical loop my guy, and it’s fun as hell! Ryan is the second new designer hire from New England in the last year (Mark Seiden / JJP [metroid] being the first). I will absolutely buy this for my location. Also, for those doubting Sega is very easy to deal with and I’m sure that AP can handle the cost of this license. This is BIG NEWS for AP, very cool.
As far as the art goes, I’m sure Sega will bring aboard an approved artist to complete the package.
Quoted from Zablon:I dunno..a sonic pin without a verticle loop? Blashphemy
Point to one time AP did that though. I will also add that Legends of Valhalla was chosen as a homebrew to be released by AP so…maybe this is their part of their model going forward.
Quoted from SantaEatsCheese:I hope it comes through as Sonic, but there is solid precident for homebrew game designers coming in with a turn key machine and having it rethemed by the manufacturer. Keith Elwin was brought on for his Home Brew Archer machine, but Stern re-skinned it as Iron Maiden.
In any case, this looks to be a good move for AP.
Definitely not assuming, I do think it’s a very strong possibility though. SEGA is not like Nintendo, the licensing costs are quite reasonable and they have a long history of working with pin manufacturers.
Quoted from Capn12:Legends of Valhalla also didn't include acquiring IP rights. Sonic may come from AP, but I definitely wouldn't assume it to be the case.
“Segas business is mostly licensing out Sonic products these days”
Well…you said it there yourself. Not sure why you are arguing that it’s strong possibility.
And yes, the difference in cost between Sega IPs and Nintendo IPs are vast. We’re talking 10’s of thousands vs 100’s of thousands.
There is a reason we haven’t seen any classic Nintendo IPs by Stern or any other modern pin manufacturers in the last 20 years. And JJP is definitely not licensing Metroid for their new designers home brew. It’s like they havnt even bothered to TRY to acquire it. Almost as if it’s common knowledge that Nintendo is impossible to deal with.
Quoted from TreyBo69:You know how much Sega charges vs Nintendo?
What pins has Sega done*? Nintendo has actually licensed their IP out before (back during Mario mania where he even had his own soda)
Sure Sega owned Stern Pinball, but they weren’t actually involved with the company besides owning it as an investment in an arcade equipment manufacturer.
Even then, the “long history” is like 5 years and over 20 years ago. Anyone at corporate Sega then isn’t a decision maker now.
Sega probably would license out a Sonic pin, but that’s because Sega’s business is mostly licensing out Sonic products these days (and owning a handful of video game developers)
*let’s agree Sega of Japan making some pins around 50 years ago as being irrelevant today
Yes, I’ll speculating. Never said I knew anything for a fact. Not sure what the problem is here. ANYWAY…hope AP gets the IP cause it would be COOL. The end.
Quoted from TreyBo69:You’ve talked to Nintendo and Sega yourself?
People say this about Nintendo. But go down any toy aisle or clothing aisle and you’ll see licensed Nintendo merch everywhere. There is so much random junk with Nintendo properties on it. And some of it is limited edition, small run type stuff like collaborations like Nike shoes and luxury watches.
And I was never arguing Sega wouldn’t license this stuff out. I’m questioning why you say Nintendo is more expensive. Why you think Sega owning Stern 25 years ago would make any difference
You’re just speculating like everyone else.
I’m not ASSUMING ANYTHING AS A FACT ….BUT I DO THINK ITS A STRONG POSSIBILITY.
Get it now? Jesus Herman Christ pal
Cognitive dissonance much?
To make it even more clear please READ the comment I was actually responding to.
Quoted from TreyBo69:But you said "Definitely not assuming, I do think it’s a very strong possibility though. SEGA is not like Nintendo, the licensing costs are quite reasonable and they have a long history of working with pin manufacturers."
You said it as if it was a fact. That's all.
It is common knowledge in the gaming industry that Nintendo is expensive and difficult to deal with in licensing their IPs for a GAME. Shoes, shirts etc etc not so bad. It’s been discussed at great lengths in the next stern thread including input from people who have dealt with the company. No, I do not personally deal directly with Nintendo. This has been a very irritating conversation.
Quoted from TreyBo69:Bro calm down
You're the one who said Sega is so much cheaper and easier to work with than Nintendo. Do you know that? You say it like it's a fact. Based on what? Your personal interactions with the company? Maybe a personal friend or colleague of yours who has worked with them?
I just found it amusing that you said you're not assuming anything, then started talking about Sega and Nintendo as if you worked with them.
I'm not mad lol.
Do a forum search man. I’m done with you. You quote me out of context and then tell me to “calm down” when I get irritated and then ask me to educate you?! Bye lmao.
Quoted from TreyBo69:Can you provide resources to that effect? I'm curious
I know Nintendo are dicks to their fans who try to monetize or freely distribute fan made products (including video games), but I want to know more about the reputation they have about licensing their IP and being so difficult to work with.
They license to other video game companies like Ubisoft (who gave Mario a gun FFS), they work with a huge number of retail partners at a variety of price points and target demographics, they make theme parks, and they're getting back into movies and tv shows.
I feel like pinball people mostly assume Nintendo is unapproachable (even though they licensed Mario pins before and almost did a Zelda pin). Nintendo seems very friendly to licensing out their brand based on the products available.
I posted a photo of you quoting me out of context. Bye.
Quoted from TreyBo69:I didn't quote you out of context. I was asking about your logic on the things you wrote. I think you misunderstood me asking about what you know re Sega and Nintendo and their relationships with licensors and pinball companies.
I'm sorry I upset you so much...
You’ve got to be kidding me, take it to pm. I’m not gumming up this thread with your lunacy.
Quoted from TreyBo69:What was taken out of context?
There is a left launch lane that has a vertical loop already in the game.
Quoted from hiker2099:The vertical loop could be in the launch lane and have a sideway exit in case the ball doesn't make it. Than it just goes onto the playfield like a soft plunge.
Yeah, I mean it seemed like Stern got the Godzilla license directly after they noticed that Spooky was interested in acquiring the license. This definitely seems to be a tactic of theirs. Really unfortunate in this case as the Sonic layout and rules are so specifically designed for that license that I doubt it would be easily or effectively re-themed without some serious changes.
Quoted from Wizkid93:If they did they're really pulling a petty bastard move, that theme and game is perfect, and I guess they know it.
Stern will keep renewing the license just to stop AP. It’s over for Sonic as far as AP is concerned.
Quoted from Wizkid93:Honestly wait til the license runs out, aquire it, and put out the dream machine.
I realize it's the market it's a competition, but they have a big chunk of market share already and a huge backlog, I thought it was quite petty, because they know how awesome it is.
Yeah, well…I do actually know people who work for AP Stern and JJP so…yeah, I guess.
Quoted from punkin:There's so many people here who have insider corporate knowledge, it's incredible.
Yeah, a lot of us live in the US in city centers and are operators and tourney players and have designer friends / programmer friends etc. To be honest I’m not sure if you’ve been being sarcastic or not but….yeah. haha
Quoted from punkin:Not just you buddy, there's dozens of people here who know everything about the inside workings of pinball companies. I read it all the time.
Edmistons work on Halloween is the hands down some of the best illustration ever on a pin.
Quoted from Viggin900:I sort of agree with you but it beats Data East drawings. What else is there? The new Halloween by that artist is done the same way? There is a fine line between photoshop, photorealistic drawing, and cartoon. I like the middle.
Operators complaining about keeping pins running are mental. You don’t want to fix stuff? Don’t operate pins. I have an ACNC on route and it’s great. Putting my Halloween in soon as today’s code update addressed a few of my concerns for location. Spooky has THE BEST tech support in the industry. You can literally call them on the phone six days a week and they’ll get you back up and running in NO TIME. Tell me about ANY other manufacturer that provide this level of service. None.
Quoted from bobukcat:I've never owned a Spooky game but I know people who owned Rob Zombie and others including one person with barcades who refuses to ever buy another game from them because of the constant issues they experienced and not being able to keep them running / earning. I was in a barcade in Jacksonville earlier this year that had a Holloween and Ultraman they were so frustrated with they were threatening to return them. I know that's fairly anecdotal but I've been leary of buying any Spooky except TNA based on those experiences.
This is great to hear, I’ve yet to buy an AP for location or otherwise but I hope they put out something I can’t refuse in the near future as Sterns are starting to feel really homogenous to me.
Quoted from Viggin900:American Pinball. I've called them up myself with a problem and the tech stayed late to help me out before the long weekend. I will never forget how nice that was. I am glad to hear Spooky would do the same.
Have a buncha money, wear a weird hat and make odd business decisions in regards to viable pinball themes.
Quoted from ticktockman:How do I become American Pinball?
They just havnt put out anything I’ve wanted to buy…yet.
Quoted from Roostking:I feel the games are pretty good and at the price point d*** good. Service is on par w spooky for sure.
So…is the next AP Barry Ousler’s posthumous game? He had nearly finished a game before he passed. RIP.
Wow, didn’t see that one coming.
Quoted from Coz:Interesting news from AP
[quoted image]
Would they even bother if they didn’t plan on manufacturing it? I’d say this is definitely their next release, followed by Ouslers last game. Perhaps in the same year. That would be definitely good for them, and us pinheads.
Quoted from Charlemagne1987:It obviously begs the question…will AP be mass producing Magic Girl? If so, holy shit!
Well the above text is also from five years ago before AP got involved. Sounds like they have the game finished and ready for production now. I’m pretty confident that AP can get this title fully functional and into people’s homes while zidware was an obvious shit show. Hopefully AP will be able to honor deposits made to zidware like pinball brothers did with Heighway’s Alien.
Quoted from punkin:Is there better information out there than pinside? Because i have to say the above text is not exciting.
Well, they manufactured LOV but didn’t design it. I would agree that Houdini thus far is the best by a mile, and wasn’t that a Balcer design that existed before AP got ahold of it? Hot Wheels was ok and it did get me hyped that they may get more licensed themes in the future. I’m personally hoping for an AP title I can get amped about and I think it will happen sooner than later.
Quoted from Charlemagne1987:That seems to be an odd observation to me. Their games are getting more and more praise with each release. And LOV sold out its allotment of Deluxes so fast they had to increase it by another 200. The way I see it, AP seems to be getting better with every release, and more people are taking note of it. I think there are big things ahead for AP.

Improving in what way though? Build quality? Programming? Theme choice? If I had to pick two AP’s to bring home right now it would hands down be Houdini and Ocktoberfest which I believe to be the companies best offerings to date.
Quoted from chuckwurt:They are definitely improving with each game.
Right on, Hot Wheels is a great package but you can’t really credit AP for the animations because they came from a tv show. I prefer tighter shooting games with deeper rules so it’s only natural that I’d gravitate towards Houdini and Okt. I do hope to see more packages like HW but the theme and the layout aren’t really for me. It is fun though!
Quoted from chuckwurt:Layout theme rules animations. Build quality was always there. Except maybe the flipper issue on early Houdinis
Hot wheels is their best shooter and best animations by far. Rules I can’t really say as all games are different and have their merits. Everyone has different tastes for rules too. I got into hot wheels rules quicker than the other games for sure.
I definitely thought about grabbing it for my location. Still might actually. But truth be told my location is full of games I like personally haha. ACNC does not earn well, but it’s partially due to the fact that I’m playing it all the time.
Quoted from onemilemore:I'd be curious how it would perform on route for you. It's super accessible for new players and has a decent amount of eye candy.
It’s not “deep” but try getting to the end of it haha. It’s the theme layout modes and difficulty for me. And yes, The animations in HW are very well arranged and programmed they just didn’t DO them. So I’ll give them credit on programming but not animations. I think that’s fair.
Quoted from chuckwurt:Sure you can. It’s a disservice to the team to claim those are copy and paste. They had to organize everything. It worked well. I hope it continues.
Alice isn’t deep at all, surprised you like that so much.
Houdini, you need to play that like 25 times in a row to get the shots down. It’s a difficult shooter but time played really plays off in dividends on this title. It really is a great game but a better home game than location. I know most who have paid coin drop to play it get frustrated but home owners rave about it.
Quoted from TreyBo69:They get some credit for choosing a theme where they'd get some footage. And they did a good job slicing it up for modes. The original animations in it are fine. Better than some of the animations in their older games for sure...
Anyhow Hot Wheels is a blast. My only complaint is they use the air wrench noise way too much. It's got a solid set of rules and a few fun moments.
LOV...really don't care for the LCD screen use and some of the rules. But that game was mostly done out of house, so maybe not a great example of AP game dev
Oktoberfest...still never played one. I just don't see them. Seems like good rules.
Houdini...hated playing it. Neat ideas in the rules though.
My rule is I cannot sell a game until I
accomplish everything in the code…so I still have JP and ACNC haha. Makes things tough when I need to liquefy haha. Lotttts of pinball playing when I need the money.
Quoted from chuckwurt:I’m actually pretty shitty at getting to wizard modes. Just all came together that one game.
I can’t argue with this. The only reason I passed on LOV were the low grade sculpts and the poor artwork overall. Really wish that AP had redone the entire art package, UI and sculpts. It could have been amazing with some further investment. It shoots great, and the rules are good…kind of a shame really. That being said I’m getting amped to see GTF and I will likely buy it for location.
Quoted from PinMonk:They went to the trouble of acquiring a cool machine with a game concept that was different, but I just wish they didn't have such atrocious sculpts and 3D printed models on it. That playdoh odin is odious. I did stuff like that in 7th grade jewelry class when learning how to do lost wax casting - and that stuff looked much better.
I understand if it's essentially a homebrew startup, but when AP took it on, that stuff should have been upgraded. Raise the price $500 and bring that stuff up to professional levels. It would cost more up front to make the molds, but amortized, $500/unit would be more than enough to cover the expense of the upgrade. I sincerely hope Galactic Tank Force leaves that level of finish behind and goes with real molded sculpts at a professional level. If Spooky can do it with sculpts all over Scooby, AP should be able to manage it.
[quoted image]
Just glad this was revealed after Godfather, Scooby Doo, Pulp Fiction and Foo Fighters because…something had to give. And this is probably it.
Lol…well if that’s the case there is no amount of convincing I’ll be able to do. At the price point, as an operator…I will not buy this gane. It will not pay for itself. High price tag and nothing to draw non pinheads to it. It’s a no brainer for me to leave this on the shelf. Scooby and Pulp Fiction on the other hand. There is value and it they will eat quarters alive. No doubt I’m my mind.
Quoted from PinRob:Why? Just curious cause I don’t see it that way at all. I see it as more interesting compared to the other 3 recent releases
Is this a joke? Might want to watch the video again my friend
Quoted from PinRob:Where did you see real actors on the LCD in the actual game??
My head would explode and I would die, I wouldn’t even get to play my dream theme
Quoted from Rarehero:Ben Heck is doing Zelda, CONFIRMED! [quoted image]
