What has everyone done with the plain clear ball? Color changing? A mod?

It is the palantir. They are available in crystal...which look far better.

My LOTR has all lights blinking on-off-on...

It won't start or play. All lights are on, however.

Any suggestions?

The only time I ever saw this on a Whitestar game was when I installed an NVRAM on a Striker Xtreme - it blinked on/off/on and wouldn't start. It turns out the NVRAM had a wonky leg making bad contact. When I fixed that, the problem went away...

Check your ribbon cables?

The little short one between the top and bottom board caused me some start-up issues. New pins and a cable resolved it. It had a slight bit of corrosion somehow (NVRAM for years - it’s an odd one)

Thanks for the advice. My left flipper button's leaf switch was missing a contact. I've got a new one on the way!

New leaf switch fixed my issue. Now I just need to figure out how to bend my spinner arms to get it to hang right, and I'll be in business.

Could it be in reset loop, does it make a 'clicking' sound when the lights blink? First thing I'd do is to check LED204 on the I/O board when the lights blink, if it turns off then it means that the 5V DC is below the reset limit. If it's flashing then there's a comms issue between CPU/Sound board and I/O board (perhaps the ribbon cable)

Thank you. I will check it out when i get off work and get back to y'all

I checked these and it worked...for a few games...then blinking lights again. Luckily, i received my manual in the mail today. I will sit down with it and look into it further. It feels like maybe it is just a loose connection or something simple, though.

So did it reset then? If so, I'm afraid the manual will not be of much help (other than finding out which where test points are, which LED is which etc).
If it was resets related to 5V, then I bet it's the connections between CN2 on the CPU / sound board and J16 on the I/O power driver board - often times these cause voltage drops between the two board. Re-seating them, and I'd start wtih J16, will likely help (did work for me) but in some cases you have to replace the connectors to fix that.

Pinwiki has more information on this, see section 4.3 at http://pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Sega/Stern_White_Star_Repair. Measure the 5V on CPU board and see if it drops relative to what it is on I/O power driver board. I'd not start with pot adjustment, re-seat the connectors first.

I am torn between sillyoldelf side art or mirror blades. I’m going to wait and decide.

These are the nicest IMO...Same type of material as what Stern uses for theirs. Very high quality. I can take pics of them in my game if you like. Matches perfectly.

I barely had any time before having to turn in, but i re-seated and turned it on and the volume was WAY UP! It did that twice. Im not sure why the volume went up like that.

Not sure either, never heard of an issue like that. To be able to help you further I think we need your help in eliminating issues. Eg did it reset, and if so did it appear to be 5V related? Have you checked any possibility of battery damage? Etc.

Btw, I hope you didn’t reseat the connectors with power on...

Agreed. I like mirror blades, but one look at sillyelf's art for LoTR and it's obvious it's the best choice. It's not only high quality, original art but it follows and enhances the themes throughout the playfield: the shire is the shire, the potd is the potd, etc.

No brainer IMO for this game. I think I may have gotten the last pair recently though I noticed they are out of stock now, but I'm sure more are coming.

Actually I was referring to the Retro Refurb side art. I'll post a couple of pics of these in my game later today.

Those work very well for the same reason as sillyoldelfs for sure. Nice art that follows the table themes.

Mt Doom and Barad-dur are already represented in the game, so it's odd to me that they would be on the side art right next to stock representations of them...

Still, better than the million volcanoes ones that a previous owner installed on my game. That one makes no sense at all from a theme perspective. There's one volcano in the movie... so let's put tons of volcanoes all over!

I hear you. I searched for a long time trying to find something I liked. These aren't perfect for the reasons you mention but they do look the best and blend into the playfield artwork the best IMO. Yeah, the one with a million volcanoes is ridiculous. Pics to follow...

I looked a long time at different blades and these are the ones I went with. I think they're excellent.

wow, these one are beautiful. I've PMed sillyoldelf if it would be feasible to have a new batch produced, if some other are interested, we may group the request ?

Excellent, thanks for those Pictures

#4074 32 days ago

for those with blades, or those considering getting blades:

https://www.pinballlife.com/interior-cabinet-protector-blade-set.html

These protect your side art from getting marred, if you like to raise the playfield (tinker) as much as I do.

Is your diverter working? Check the fuse. I believe it is F21.

During war of the ents, should the right orbit always deposit into isengard? Mine usually just goes around the whole table

#4079 31 days ago

It should drop into isengard after contacting the stand up post along the back. You will find some people have used shims to make the post lean towards the field. I installed a Stern Slim post sleeve on mine (I think i had to cut it down a bit as it was too tall), and while it doesn't work everytime, it does work a majority of the time.

#4080 31 days ago

When I have War of the Ents running, a shot to the left orbit drops into the tower as it should, but shots to the right orbit just circle around. If I hit the shot three times in a row, it will hit the post and drop in.

Anyone have this issue?

The orbit is the worst possible shot to attempt for this mode, it's best to backhand the left flipper into Isengard (assuming your diverter gate is working) as the ball feeds to the left flipper after each successful shot...practice this shot and you will be awarded a gift from the Elves every time!

There are posts about adding a post sleeve on the up post diverter to make it so the right orbit shot will work to send the ball under the tower. Mine has worked well since adding the sleeve a few years ago.

If you are concerned with points, the orbit shots earn 50% more than the direct shot into the tower.

Just a regular sized post rubber? Or a thin one, like Titans?

Thanks!

The sillyoldelf blades from UK pretty but are on very thin, nonlaminated material. I ripped mine trying to install without completely removing playfield. Ive installed 4 other blade sets with no issues. wouldnt do them over again.

Does anyone have any information on the ring magnet?common failures they might know about, it seems like it isn’t grabbing the ball properly and as if it doesnt know if the ball is there.

For the ring magnet to grab the ball it uses 2 switches, those need to be checked first: The ring ramp spinner and the optos in the ring itself. Verify correct operation of those two first via the switch test.

Did everyone see John Rhys-Davies on the Twipy awards? So awesome! He did some live LOTR jackpot callouts and presented the award for best callouts. Pretty epic if you are a LOTR fan. Gimli starts around 22:59

Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the quality. It's the first time I have heard of anyone having problems installing them due to the material quality and I am not sure why you didn't get in touch for a refund if you were unhappy with them. The blades are fully laminated - they are printed on commercial quality vinyl - the thickest available with uv resistant inks. They are then laminated with the thickest possible laminate that allows the colours and gloss to shine through. I am lucky in that I have a local printer that specialises in wrapping everything from custom sport cars to airplanes and I tested numerous samples of vinyl and laminate with them before using them. I have sampled other decals and I do not believe the material used is any better or the quality or printing as good. Honestly, it's the first time someone has told me they are too thin.

Feedback is important to me and I would like everyone to be delighted with them. If you are anyway unhappy with the product in anyway, you are always welcome to contact me for either a full refund or replacement.

So i have a lotr LE and the back right tower isnt working. In test the coil has 60vac on the thicker wire. Doing ohm test i have 4ohms through the coil. I checked wiring from coil to J8 and had continuity. I changed Q7 and tested the transistor prior to install. Tower still does not rock. Im at a loss
