There’s a point of regulatory capture where government agencies become made up of pro industry stooges and zealots, not industry watchdogs looking out for the consumer and the environment.
That’s right around the corner for EV’s, if not here already.
Trains, planes, military, nuclear, auto & pharma (just to name a few) all achieved this really neat trick and most within my lifetime.
That’s the only thing that’ll propel EV’s into the mainstay of our economy and it’ll surely have the same disastrous consequences on the environment and public policy.
There’s nothing new and futuristic here.
It’s the same, tired, injurious grab for cash, regulatory controls and power.
Wanna really help the environment...drive an already manufactured, 8-10 year old Toyota sparingly. It’s boring and has no status, but study after study shows it has the smallest environmental footprint.
Wanna toy worship, enjoy a good circle jerk, waste money, hurt the poor and lead to the same tired outcome? Go EV.

In three years it’ll be cheaply sold or given to someone in the department as they again reach for the latest and most expensive equipment they can burden their residents with.
When has a municipality ever truly tried to keep costs down?

Has this thread ever touched on the loss of independence, autonomy & freedom of travel these cars are quickly ushering in?

Self driving will quickly turn into no driving & no steering wheels.
Which then devolves into driving on only certain days, time blocks & roads.
Then it’ll morph into significantly reduced driving or only going where it’s programmed to allow you to go…right into no driving especially if you’re deemed an undesirable.
The government hates the freedom traditional cars offer and uses the environment only as an excuse, as they’re the biggest polluters.

Has every freedom loving, former hippie lost their mind and intellectual core beliefs?

I know, I know, it’ll never be forced on us like that.

We never thought our daughters would be forced to share areas with grown ass naked men too.

Quoted from paynemic:

Holy cow man! That was a huge leap into dystopia! Take a deep breath.

Some home thermostats now remotely shut down your A/C if it’s not in the power grids best interest.

Apple will “slow down” your perfectly working Iphone if you’re not using their latest more expensive model.

Your phone eavesdrops on you 24/7.

TV’s now include a forward facing camera.

The first thing police want during an arrest is you to unlock your phone to check your past movements and communications.

That’s not fretting about the future or dystopian. It’s now buttercup.

Some people are placated when their guy is in control. I got news for you. Sometimes the wrong guy’s in charge and you really won’t like the mission creep.

But anyways…aren’t some of those Tesla models shiny? And how about their fine leather stitch work?

#6966 10 months ago
Quoted from Pinfactory2000:

-->Thermostats can only be remotely controlled by your power company if you agree to a plan that allows that.
-->Phones are throttled once a battery gets below a certain level or the temperature of the phone exceeds limits. This is not done remotely.
-->A rear facing camera on a monitor/TV would be much less useful than a forward facing camera.
-->Police cannot unlock your phone without a warrant.

You could be a bot

The thermostat remote shut off was slipped into the extremely fine print of a “terms of agreement”. Whoever thought that remote shut off was built into something like that? No one ever heard of it, but bang, there it is.

Non support of older devices is common.
Just try using an old “un smart”
flip phone.

Why does my TV need to watch me?

All the cops need to do is shut off their cams & hold up your phone in front of your face if they’re too lazy to get an easily obtained warrant…after confiscating your device of course.

People defending the indefensible needs of big corporations to data mine your every movement, just does not compute.

#6967 10 months ago
Quoted from Pinfactory2000:

--ICE vehicles can as easily be turned off/controlled remotely as an EV can. Powertrains don't dictate autonomous driving functionality no remote access ability.

That’s why you need a Mopar slant six…
Just get oil, air & gas to it and live your life on your own terms of agreement.

Quoted from vid1900:

Exactly.
The fossil fuel industry gets 6 trillion dollars in subsidies every year.
Time to stop that ship and let the real prices shine through

Last year, my little state of Massachusetts took in wellover 1 billion in state gas tax alone.

If you add up all the local, state & federal taxes assessed on gas. You start to see pretty quickly that it’s a revenue stream, not a subsidy for federal coffers.
That subsidy figure is pie in the sky thinking.
It’s the government saying, “we should be taxing your more you know, but we’ll give you a break”
Add all the taxes paid by companies & individuals working in the dreaded ICE sector (10% of the US job force) and it’s staggeringly one sided.

You have to starve the beast, not fatten it.

Quoted from Pinfactory2000:

MA spends over $2B on roads annually.

You make my point.

It takes in half a billion in tolls alone.
Add that to 1 billion in gas tax and you nearly break even.

Add car excise tax and car sales tax (just to name a few) and it’s a total windfall for the state.

Did you ever see how much the state blows on 135 miles of the turnpike?

Cars are the golden goose not a cost.

You really don’t think they’re in the business to lose money, do you?

Recently I looked into buying a side by side UTV. I needed a smaller model as we have to travel over a wooden bridge and it has to fit on a boat. It was to be used in an island that has solar, but of course no gas stations, so I figured I’d definitely go EV.

Here’s the two models

Polaris Kinetic EV
Weight: 2100lbs
Cost: 24,999

Honda Pioneer gas
Weight 800lbs
Cost: $9,999

Here’s the winner

Twitter was losing 4 million a day.
6500 were laid off.
Their average salary was 160k
6500 x $160,000 equals over 1 billion.
After the layoffs it started making 3 million a day.

No one in this country deserved to lose their jobs more than those pampered freaks.

This was in that WSJ article:

“Earlier this week, French automaker Renault said it has decided to cancel the initial public offering of its electric-car unit Ampere.
Ford, meanwhile, has slashed production of its electric F-150 Lightning.
Rental-car firm Hertz has said it was dumping about one-third of its EV rental car fleet, replacing the cars with gas-engine vehicles.
Also earlier this week, Tesla—the world’s most valuable automaker—warned of notably lower growth this year. Data earlier this year has shown a slowdown in EV sales growth in the U.S., automakers delaying or cutting back on plans and anxiety rising among dealership owners”

You see, the business trend of the EV is only accurately written about in the business pages of the Wall Street Journal, not that fanboy thingy you quote.

Hell…Volvo’s shares jumped 20% when they detached themselves from their EV division.

All trends are down.
The arc of the product is now irreversibly downhill.

Time to sell.

#9471 82 days ago

And this was in the article YOU posted:

“Despite the growth last year, Volvo saw a slowdown in December.
Volvo’s EV sales slipped 16% last month compared to December 2022.
Growth slowed across all major markets.
US electric vehicle sales slipped 39%, Europe 16%, and China EV sales were down 69%”

With all due respect, I have to ask, did you (or anyone who upvoted your post) even read the full article you posted?

Here's a copy of one of those graphs from the article.

VCR’s came down in price and sold like absolute hotcakes…right before they too ended up on the ash heap of history.

Think of EV’s as central vacuuming.
In some instances and applications, they work just fine, but is it really worth the initial expense and this cult like following?

Sooooo exciting.

Quoted from vid1900:

EV rough in encourages smart people to move there.

Quoted from HobbyGuy:

Isn't Atlanta one of the up and coming tech cities in the South?

Let me get this straight, you can add IQ points and enter the cool city club, just through a purchase of an EV?

That’s some pretty shallow stuff right there.

#9617 69 days ago
Quoted from vid1900:

Nope.
You are stuck with whatever IQ you currently have.
But, cities can attract a smarter population by using incentives.
-

If your city's orchestra has a Stradivarius in its arsenal…If you have a superstar violinist, you then attract other top tier musicians who wish to play with the best.

You might be confusing the height of classical music and lowly consumerism.

Having a Coach bag store or a Rolex showroom doesn’t lure the best and brightest, it just fuels consumption.

Everyone has to remind themselves…it’s just an expensive car, nothing else.
