Hello Pinsiders...

For my 3rd(?) post, I've gone with GND wire...Wow! I bought my first pin last week, Getaway. It's in good shape, but a few things I am ironing out and learning about.

It's had the LCD mod prior to arriving here. Looks to be powered from J118 with an extended plug.

The thing is...There is a rogue wire hanging down in the back box. I've traced it (love pinball manuals!) and its goes to the Triac board into J1-4 (GND) and its meant to go to Power Board and J118-3 according to the schematics. (I already felt like a legend for getting this far)

But J118-3 already has a wire living there! That goes to the Accelerator board.

The game works fine with this "rogue hanging wire" but I assume I should really find it a home or the Triac board is missing a GND connection.

The schematic does seem to tell me that J118-3 has two GND wires...Do those plugs take 2 wires? Does anyone have any idea whats best to do? That Triac GND must be shared, if the game still operates and tests ok?

My OCD doesn't like the un-homed wire! Would love some advice or help if possible.

Thanks in advance!

Rob

Check your wiring at the adjacent plugs, J116, J117, and J119. Looks like the plug to the left of 118 (which is J116) has the same color wires going to pins 2 and 3. J116 Pin 2 gets a thin Gray/yellow wire, and pin 3 gets a thin black one. Note that J118 has the same color wires also going to pins 2 & 3. Hopefully that helps, but let me know if you need more pics.

Thanks for the reply @frunch

I think what's confusing me is the manual having two references to j118-3, see the pics attached of triac and accelerator board schematics.

Both Triac and Accelerator boards say they get GND from j118-3 or am I reading it incorrectly? (Very very possible!)

In my situation, accelerator board DOES get it from j118-3, I can see the wire headed under the PF...

But the triac board wire states j118-3 too, would they have originally both been into the same spot?

Now I see the schematic pictures next to each other..I notice they are both J1-4 on each board...I wonder if that's a manual error...because : same plug location...

Looks like it could be a typo or just incorrect info--that seems to be more common than one would expect. Is the wiring at the J116+J118 connectors the same on your game as it is in mine?

Hey man, thanks for sticking with me! Appreciate it

Ostensibly, yes the wiring is the same as yours. I have a connector block at J118-3 as well, but 118-3 has GND running under the playfield as it should..to accelerator board. (Extra plug is there to power new LCD screen mod from previous owner)

I'm wondering where someone else's GND wire on Triac J1-3 tracks to in another machine..that's a big ask by the way, bit fiddly...

(Couldn't delete donut house model from pics, didn't mean to add it)

Think i might have found it. There's a single-pin molex plug among the wiring below connectors J117 and J119. 710683733.png710683733.png

The single black wire on one side of the plug is coming from the triac board J1-4. The other side of the plug has 2 wires though--one goes to the accelerator board, and the other goes to the ground pin at J118-3. So that's how the triac board and accelerator board both share J118-3. Still doesn't explain the loose wire (though I'm thinking it may have been result of modding, maybe it's not needed the way the mods are arranged?)

Amazing, thanks for tracking that back dude, you're a gent!

This makes sense now, as the screen mod goes into the 118 plug. Instead of keeping the wire coming down from Triac and then splitting to Accelerator board and J118-3 (out the back of the MOLEX, making the entire GND connection), the Triac GND has been left disconnected and the Accelerator board GND has been put directly into J118-3

The schematic for Triac shows J1-4 shares it's GND with Triac J3-6 (on the board, see below orange line), so maybe leaving off the GND from Triac to J118-3 is completely cool, GND is redundant. But it was connected so.....THAT said, I notice the schematic text shows J3-6 ,7 as N/C (need to go home from work and check!!!)

I have a heinous "bark" at power on/off and I'd love to know why it happens. This rogue wire is one I'd like to tick off as not related.

I'll connect those up like yours and report back.

Thanks again for taking time to help, really appreciate it.

Tried the rogue wire into GND with other GNDs..Made no difference to the "speaker bark" or anything I could see..I'll check LEDs on powerboard tomorrow as I forgot to check..

I've ordered a single molex and a few other connectors, so I'll tidy it up regardless...

Thanks for your help with this dude, glad I found out what it all was. Even if it wasnt the problem.

You're most welcome! I'll add this: that loud speaker 'bark' when turning the game on is normal--as far as i know. My game has always done it, and I've noticed other games do it too. As long as the sound and everything works properly once booted up, i wouldn't worry about it.

Enjoy your game!!!
