As the title states, the Getaway is here at last. Bought this machine back in early February from bjoechamp here on Pinside, and for that I will once again make a donation later this weekend to Pinside! He was gracious enough to do 2 payment installments, and then he got the machine out first thing.

The shipping was a bit rocky (delayed nearly 2 weeks), but all in all things went well. Bjoechamp was a dream seller - buy with confidence from him!!! He packed this thing so well it would survive a street war at Gaza Strip.

Anyways, I am just now unpacking it, and I am waiting for a friend to help me get it up the stairs, so there'll be a delay for new pictures until later tonight.

Pics of its arrival not even 2 hours ago!

Joe was awesome. I've played 2 games on it so far, and it's a great lil' machine. It's a solid player's machine. This is not a HUO or CQ, and that's great - I love great player's machines like this. I was not disappointed at all; this is a GREAT machine to restore down the road. The cabinet art is dynamite - that alone was worth the $2200. Really, it's in damn good shape.

The packaging was insane. I have so much plywood from pallets, plastic wrap, bubble wrap, and carpet it's unreal. I could start building a home with all of this.... but let me tell you; this guy can pack a pin. Ship with confidence here - there was NO WAY this thing was going to get beat up.

Here's a couple quick pics!! And thank you, Joe, you were a GREAT seller.

Thanks everyone! Here is a quick video of LEDs just in the traffic light so far... man did THAT make a difference.

#11 10 years ago

Oh look .... LEDs to install .

100_6382.JPG100_6382.JPG

#13 10 years ago

I got regular frosted bulbs at 0.79 a piece from CT. I already see a tiny bit of ghosting in the traffic light. Not enough to warrant buying non-ghosting to me, but it's there. Just a heads up. My wife was playing when it happened. She didnt see it...but I did... (:

Key ignition mod installed. SUPER easy and fantastic instructions!

Got the Red Line Mania indicator light working again!

The light fixture that holds the light was roughed up a bit. Had to take a small blade and cut a new groove out a tiny bit to get it to click into the PCB board. Took a lil' force - made me a tad bit nervous, but it worked!

Great packing job!. Nice pin. Congratulations!!

Thanks, Pete! It's good to be back in the hobby!! I had to take 1.5 year off and just...reset. I'm back now though, and man, I've been missing this!

We Air Force kids have to stick together!
Great lineup BTW. I'm picking up a Getaway next month, T3 is on my shortlist, and I'm restoring my TFTC soon.

They are three great games! Looking to trade up TFTC for something like Corvette, BSD, or RFM. My TFTC would come with cash obviously, but yeah, just ready to move on....

Cool to meet another airman, Flaps! How'd you know ??

#32 10 years ago

It did take a while to unload, but it was well worth it. Game came without a single scratch - looks outstanding!

#35 10 years ago

Already bought one - thank you though!

#37 10 years ago
Quoted from mulder2010:

You're on a pinball binge again. Quite the rush. You might have 4-5 games by summer.

I wish my man, I wish. I promised Jessica that I would not leave the gameroom with pins invading the house (we moved into a new place about 1.5 miles from where you visited in 2012).

We painted the living room walls a medium red to make it a movie theater kind of atmosphere. She DID give me the ok to put a RFM down there due to its crazy weight getting it upstairs.

Pity ....

I'm keeping my eyes out for a RFM now.

Quoted from RVApinballer:

That's a fantastic looking Getaway! Congrats on the purchase, and thanks for sharing. It's on my "Next-3-Games" list if I see a nice one for sale and have the cash to make it happen.
I'd like your opinion on LED's if you don't mind. I was thinking about doing back box LED's behind the translite but not on the playfield. In your opinion, would the LED's on the translite overpower the playfield lights if the playfield was not LED?

Thank you for your kind words! The condition of the game speaks very well for Joe - the seller. Great game and fantastic seller! Hear about that shipping ...?

Well, I had just the translite LED'd lastnight, and I think it was a good balance. I didn't feel like the PF was drowned out by the translite at all. Ultimately, it's your decision, but with frosted regular LEDs from CT installed, I would say it was not overpowering to me!

Now, here's a good example from lastnight as to WHY I go LEDs. It is not for the bling factor; it is to keep the current low and the heat on the PF - particularly the inserts - down. Check out this pop bump cover right out of my HS2 from lastnight:

Got a lot more fun stuff for you guys later today!! Right now, I'm circular sawing the "safe" Joe sent me . That and getting my garage under control. It is SO bad since we moved in 3 weeks ago. Today is the day it all begins to take shape!

For the key ignition mod, contact Chris over at PinballToys. He should have more coming soon.

How did you get the sound of your engine so loud?\

My bad, I missed this question. My volume is set at "9" I believe. Maybe my phone has a really good mic ?

#47 10 years ago

Small progress.

Going under the PF from here!

Here, the bulbs near the flippers have been changed:

Now I have hit the top of the RPM circle:

#48 10 years ago

All of underside of PF is done. Working on GI now.

Video of underside of PF done:

#49 10 years ago

All done with the PF and the GI. Took me a good solid 4 hours, but it's done, and man - does this baby pop.

All bulbs are CoinTaker frosted bulbs - nothing extraordinarily fancy or unique.

Next - to install the mountain - in the morning!

#52 10 years ago
Quoted from yonkiman:

Looks great! How did you get such smooth and steady video? Looks like a combination of tripod, tracks and steadycam! Impressive!

That's a very nice compliment! Honestly, that was just me holding the camera and slowly walking and moving around the machine.

Guess my arms had gone catatonic after a while .

A quick tip for those changing out to LEDs. When you go underneath the PF, you might think "Gee, sure hope I can keep track of which bulbs I've changed out versus those I haven't...." Well, here's what I did. Change a bulb to LED, and when you install the holder back into the PF, just turn your ratchet so only 3-4 of the threads catch. That way, you can visually tell that the screw is not all the way into the PF, and you know you've done that one. Then do the whole machine - made the process MUCH faster without having to double-guess myself!

Quoted from bjoechamp:

Wow unbelievable? Ship it back!!!

No .

Quoted from bjoechamp:

Looks so good buddy, I knew she was going to a good home. You convinced me to start tinkering with led.

That's awesome, dude. It's well worth it. The low heat and less current helping keep fuse holders, molex connectors, and circuit components from melting or weakening.

I know some people here asked about what bulbs I used and how many. Here's my unfortunate answer: I don't know. I ordered 220+ bulbs based on the manual, and I can tell you I prolly overshot by a good 20 LEDs. What I did: searched the manual and counted what bulbs went where. Once I had a final count, I added anywhere from 5-10 extra bulbs of each kind and color.

Here is the order I put in with CoinTaker. Remember, I did NOT use every single bulb - I had a good 20 bulbs I ended up not using. That doesn't bother me because I am all about having spares.

Got new bolts for the traffic light. Here's what to use in case yours is wobbly like mine would get after a couple direct hits to the post in front of it.

Also, installed new PF glass trim. Was so weird - all 5 screws were installed in the old one, but when I installed the new one, I had to drill a couple new pilot holes. Didn't make any sense; I compared the old and new ones side by side with the holes lining up exactly - oh well. New holes drilled, trim looks awesome!

More goodies - got some flipper button protectors for the cabinet. I know my abilities to paint match are crap - even for black - so figured I'd be safe than sorry:

Whose got two thumbs and just got an almost complete set of plastics with an extra traffic light complete with circuitboard? This guy... right here!

Didn't even think about it at $115. $65 for the traffic light alone at Marco.

Oh crap, now that's a score. How are you liking the game? Did you see my topic "DIY lighting mods for Getaway".

I just did - those are some nice mods especially the Turbo Boost gauges. I will probably do that one - looks fricking awesome!!!
