Saved a Skylab before the downpour hit today. A couple pinsiders shared a craigslist listing of a machine about 10 min from my workplace, so I ran over an picked it up. The bad, NO HEAD and a lot of rusty parts inside. It also had a nice puddle inside from the light rain. The good, glass was still there, so the playfield stayed dry. Playfield is actually pretty nice, and the plastics are all in one piece, yellowed a bit, and a couple warped a bit, but not bad. Apron looks nice. Cabinet isn't bad, mostly just the back, wasn't too much water in there, so should dry out okay. Odds are it's just a parts machine at this point. I'll have to hear what others think. Playfield would look nice on my wall. I'll be happy to pass the whole thing along for free if anybody wants to make the machine whole again. Not really looking to make any money on the parts either, so if anybody needs anything, please let me know. Anyway, let me know what you all think??? Thanks!!!

Very happy to see a Pinsider saved this one!

Great job!!!

I need that cigarette butt in the shooter lane to make my 70s em authentic. Lol. In all seriousness thanks for paying this forward. Hopefully we can get this one restored, or at least part it out to save several other EMs from this era

#4 5 years ago

I’ll take it if you don’t want it. I know quite a few people with storage units full of parts, one of them may have a head.

I’d be happy to give you at least something for it. Do you have any pictures of the inside of the game, the bottom of the cabinet and the underside of the playfield? I didn’t see any up top. I’ll PM you my number.

#5 5 years ago

Not really worth saving unless there’s a Skylab head laying around. But a wealth of parts - I’ve had one williams parts machine for 10 years and it STILL never lets me down when I need a part.

Literally hundreds of bucks worth of parts if you really break it down, which can go to help other much better games.

Thanks for the advice. It is tempting to keep for parts. But if he wants it to have a go at it I'll pass it along to Colson.

So happy you got this I was so nervous with the rains coming in!
That game looks extremely nice! Someone probably dropped the head I’ll bet. Hung on to the machine thinking one day they’ll build a new one and here’s where we are!

#8 5 years ago

Very cool! If this gets restored, please log it and post the link here for some of us to follow.

The whole idea of the Project Pin thread is to put these old games into the hands of people who will save them. I would like to see this one saved too, but without a head it will only be useful to help save other games. If you have to part it out, you can get top dollar for those pop bumper caps. They were only put in a few Williams pins and are not reproduced. The gear-type pop bumpers are my favorite - a beautiful marbleized unique style. Just guessing on price, but $25-$50 each wouldn't be unreasonable. And that is the price I would have put on them several years ago. They might be worth more now.

Glad to see that a very generous Pinsider got this!

Oh yeah, one more thing:

I like them as well. Always thought they were a cool feature and should’ve been used on more games. But don’t think they are worth quite that much. Skylab, Stratoflite, Superflite, Triple Action, and a good handful of other games had those caps.

If I get it, I am going to look for a head for a good while, and try to restore this. Waiting for a few additional pics to see the condition of the inside of the cabinet and the mechs, and it will be easier to determine if it can be restored or what it needs once I see the game in person.

If the game did end up getting parted out in any way down the road, I would either give parts away or make them as cheap as possible.

OXO, Gulftream, Tropic Fun, Pat Hand, Satin Doll and some Big Bens also had the same pop bumper caps. The blue version is super rare only used on OXO to the best of my knowledge. Those two colors look gorgeous together ‘when lit.’

@colsond3, good plan! Hope you get it.

Damn it Pecos...OXO and Big Ben are two games I’ve owned also. Can’t believe I forgot those.

More pics below. Got it out in the sunlight and it looks better than I though. Those caps are nice looking, pretty fond of the playfield colors too. Hope Colson can make something of it! As requested I entered the machine into the serial number data base, was the highest one for Skylab so far, I should win a prize!

FINALLY! A Pinsider with 1yr under his name that's worth an actual fuck. Nice save man and even better how you're handling it.

#16 5 years ago

Look salvageable, but it will definitely need some love and man hours. Thanks for the additional pics. I got your PM, and I’ll get in touch with you either today or tomorrow.

Another transformer board to pull apart and refurbish like the Vamp. At least I have some experience with it, and Skylab is very similar.

Glad to hear that, was a bit worried you wouldn't want to take it on. Didn't really think much about it being saved when I picked it up, but now very excited to see that it might happen. Vamp stuff looks great! 2nd time should be a cake walk.

You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar! Thank you so much for saving this and thanks for submitting the serial! Can’t wait to see what Colsond3 can do with it!

Glad to see another game being saved. Just surprises me to see game sent to the dump when anybody can list stuff for sale or free in any number of places. This one got lucky.

#23 5 years ago

Colsond3 I will keep my eye out for a head for this if you ever run out of room we can have 80spit store it until we find you a head. I'm sure he would do it for a few RadioShack fuses

My pleasure! Did you get it working yet?

#29 5 years ago

Most single player Williams from the same era will have almost the same head wiring. So, keep your eye out for any. Of course bulbs might not be in the exact same places.

I used a Jubilee head to complete my Fan-tas-tic body and only had to add one wire to an empty pin on the Jones plug.

Haha. That will take some time.

Good to know. I’ve been on the hunt for a head for an a single player games. No luck yet. Fantastic is a very cool game. Had one before. Love the layout. I like games with pop bumps at
random places.
