A strange, abandoned WOZ theme park.

How about a WOZ owner's get together there in a few years? Like the Saturn car owners used to do.

That would be cool.

Not a great theme to build a theme park to or maybe a pinball game.

Interesting, thanks for the link.

As a side note, there is a closed Army ammunition plant south of Desoto Kansas that a developer planned to turn into The Wonderful World of Oz theme park a bit over 10 years ago. Failed payments, lack of support and approval to move forward, and a bunch of other stuff killed it.

I actually went there as a child with my family. I remember bits and pieces. What stuck in my mind the most was the hot air balloon ride, the costumed characters and Dorothy's house. You went in the normal looking farm house, walked downstairs to the basement and a movie screen showed tornado footage and when you came out the other side the stairs were crooked and the house was leaning and damaged. This is how you entered the Land of Oz and you saw the Yellow Brick road for the first time.

My cousin Gretchen played the Wicked Witch (there were a few) while she was in college. I remember being at a family picnic and her showing me her can of nose putty that she used to create her witch nose.

The park is open once a year for a festival and is available for private party rentals as stated in the article. I have a friend who has attended a few of the yearly events. He said it was still pretty cool but yet sad to see the disrepair and the missing Emerald City that he remembered from his family vacations as a kid.

It is located not too far from Asheville, North Carolina in Beech Mountain.

Inside pic of the one flyer posted above and another version flyer in the parks last years. We still go to Grovers other parks he helped open in Boone and Pigeon Forge TN now known as Dollywood. Dollywood has a great colorful history too, the greedy Art Model once owned the park back. Some highlights include: In 1961, "Rebel Railroad" opened in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. It featured a steam train, general store, blacksmith shop, and saloon. In 1966, it was renamed "Goldrush Junction" and in 1970, the Cleveland Browns football team owner, Art Model purchased "Goldrush Junction." In 1976, Jack and Pete Herschend bought Goldrush Junction, and in 1977, renamed it "Silver Dollar City Tennessee" as a sister park to their original Silver Dollar City near Branson, Missouri. In 1986, Dolly Parton became a co-owner, and the park was renamed "Dollywood." I find it fascinating how some amusements place survive and thrive like Knoebels and Dollywood which started so small but others like Land Of OZ could not survive. Here a link for Dollywood http://entertainmentdesigner.com/history-of-theme-parks/the-history-of-dollywood/

I would rather go see Metallica in concert...

#10 10 years ago

That is so cool! Like a ghost town. I can't believe it is still intact after all these decades. Should be made into a national or state historical point.

#11 10 years ago

Creepy!
Thanks for the links and pics.

Not sure which would be creepier.

Sad. Reminds me of the pictures of abandoned renaissance festivals.

That looks like a great place to get murdered by a serial killer.

I actually agree . . . that would be a pretty odd asset to have, but would be fun.

If you like this kind of stuff (I do) then check out Centralia, PA the town Silent Hill was based on.

Also check out the abandoned Chinese disney.
