I actually went there as a child with my family. I remember bits and pieces. What stuck in my mind the most was the hot air balloon ride, the costumed characters and Dorothy's house. You went in the normal looking farm house, walked downstairs to the basement and a movie screen showed tornado footage and when you came out the other side the stairs were crooked and the house was leaning and damaged. This is how you entered the Land of Oz and you saw the Yellow Brick road for the first time.
My cousin Gretchen played the Wicked Witch (there were a few) while she was in college. I remember being at a family picnic and her showing me her can of nose putty that she used to create her witch nose.
The park is open once a year for a festival and is available for private party rentals as stated in the article. I have a friend who has attended a few of the yearly events. He said it was still pretty cool but yet sad to see the disrepair and the missing Emerald City that he remembered from his family vacations as a kid.
It is located not too far from Asheville, North Carolina in Beech Mountain.
