Looking for help, thoughts, and ideas. I have the "Opto Trough Bad" message on my DH, which is a long term project I started years ago, it is an assembled machine from parts. On power up this message appears. The optos on the playfield test and work, The game boots okay, but will not start a game. In the switch edge test mode nothing in the trough registers. I have swapped the 16 opto board out mounted on the underside of the playfield, with one I had which I believe to be "good", still same issue playfield optos work, the trough does not. Any advice?

Quoted from ChrisPINk25:

PAR fuse on the 12v? Loose wire on plug to trough opto?

Just getting back to this, checked and no fuse issues or loose plugs observed.
I have not moved into testing the CPU yet.
I have measured 12 volts at the power driver board.
I noticed when powered on, on the 16-opto board all the resistors at the j3 & j4 end of the board (the optos for the playfield that are working) are very warm to the touch I mean they are almost too hot to touch. All the resistors at the j1& j2 end, (the ball trough optos which are not working,) are cold.
Does this board typically run hot?
I swapped back to the original 16-opto board and the same hot and cold observation.
Could there be a shorted wire some where becausing this?
Other thoughts

Here is the info with automated testing of the switch matrix. 6.24.3 on the page is the switch matrix troubleshooting this will be able to isolate the problem. If column 3 has no continuity then maybe a bad trace or chip on cpu. Here is a pic of the column 3 being tested.

The problem was a hacked wire harness to the receivers on the trough board, I grabbed a harness from an extra playfield and presto the game boots, i need to install the wire harness properly this weekend then onto the next issue all the coils plugged into j130 on the driver board are dead, so I'll be asking for more advice and ideas in short order, thanks for the help to all.

So I've resolved several issues on my project DH, to the point where the game boots and plays. Now I'm chasing down other problems. On power up/boot, the auto plunger coil pulses 4 times, also ocassionally the gun launch will do the same. I know these are on the same voltage connection #2 & #3. One thing that I am wondering about since they can both be actuated by the ball launch switch, gun handle trigger switch 11, and I assembled this project from parts, is there a diode missing from the mix some where that I failed to account for?
Thoughts and advice appreciated!

Quoted from bssbllr:

Just curios could it be switch 77 which feeds the gun. Mine fires twice after feeding the gun and shot during multi ball. But only sometimes. I have checked and replaced both opto boards. No affect during the game so haven’t worried much about it. And it’s random only sometimes.

No luck with switch 77, but thank you, so I continue trial and error on other things. On another note anyone seen an insert as nasty as this one? Thinking of just painting this ugly thing, any other ideas to clean it up?

Looks nice, sounds like painting is the way to go.

Looking for a decal for the front of my DH, anyone have one or know a reasonably priced source, someone cut a hole in the cabinet for a coin box I guess, I'm planning to plug it by cutting a piece of plywood, sanding etc...

Question on playfield GI, I got my DH working about 8 months ago, but the playfield GI was blowing the fuse on the power driver board on booting so I left it unplugged. Last weekend I finally revisited the GI checked each string one at a time and they all worked without popping the fuse. So I plugged it in all good. Now the question. When a game starts the GI lights flicker rapidly until the first shot or mode is hit or started is this normal? I can't remember since it's been so long since I played a DH in the wild. Appreciate any comments thx.

I am working on bring back to life a Dirty Harry looking for some parts if anyone has anything let me know I really need the wireform ramps

Which ones are you looking for? I might have extra parts, but won't be able to look for a few days
