Just joined the club... my game has cracked ramps but came with both replacements, anything specific I should do or look for while I have the playfield stripped (besides the obvious clean, wax, bulbs etc) as Im putting in the new ramps?

Take the back board with the 2 flashers off the playfield it has about 8 screws but will make things a lot easier when removing ramps. Also take a look at the magnet if it is mushroomed it would be a good time to change it. It must be removed from the top.

I agree. If there is anything you need to do to the magnet, I'd say do it when you have the ramps off. Its in such a stinker of place to get to, might as well make sure you dont have to go back there.
Also I think 2 of the pops are difficult to access with the ramps on, so maybe rebuild those.. good luck

Check your optos. Mine that registered for the magnet were both loose around that right ramp.

Ya know, this might be the reason my magnet’s not grabbing anymore...time will tell. Now if I can remember how to put all this back together
Taking plenty of pictures so hopefully after a good shop out, it will all go back in no problems.

We’ve all done it. After a nice shop job, we forget what wire went where. Even though I took a million pictures, it seems I always forget to snap the one shot I need.
I think I forgot to stick something through the playfield to plug back into this harness. What am I forgetting? I pushed both ramp opto plugs back through, but can’t figure out what I left behind. Hoping it’s just the famous non used drop target harness.

Nothing goes to that plug but it is not for the drop target. If you go back in the thread a little someone was asking what it was for. The only answer is we all have that same plug and nothing connected to it.

The Cliffy’s left side protector for the right ramp just arrived! I sent Cliff a mock-up and he added finishing touches. It fits perfectly! My ramp was missing just that protector, and I even managed to find two other ramps, but they didn’t have protectors either. If you have a ramp cracked/repaired in that location, or just want to get it protected before it does..here you go!

Awesome!
I just got my Cliffy’s in yesterday...finally. It wasn’t an easy feat. Haha. Good thing I was tearing it all down to shop it anyway. I have the metal piece for the ramp already. Do I need this one? Or you just got it because your piece was missing?
Oh yeah seah2os i did end up getting my mirror blades in too. Just installed them today. I thought using the blade protectors from pinball universe it’d be easy, buuuut it’s too tight to even fit them in after the playfield is down.
I got them on no problem, and easily lowered the playfield using the protectors, but getting it back up is tough. You have to ease the pf up a little and then put the protectors in, to get it back up. Ended up getting some small swirl surface scratches on the right blade using the protector, because I was trying to force squeeze them in...hahaha. The protector itself scratched it. Oh well. It’s not a gouge or anything, just small surface swirls. Here’s a couple pics. One of them showing my carbon fiber ring around the magnet. Be awesome if I could ever get the dang thing(magnet) to work.

Those mirror blades look great! I've found that when installing my blade protectors on DH, it's necessary to slide the entire playfield to one side first, which may give an extra 1/16" on the other side, then install the protector. I then repeat for the other side. I have to be careful when lifting up the playfield because the protectors want to come up as well.

Is it me or does your magnet looks like it is sticking too far up. It doesn't look flush to the playfield protector.

Hey bud, I have a mix of Cointaker and Comet frosted cool/natural white in the GI’s except for under the right ramp. Under there I have frosted purple comet. All the inserts came from Cointaker’s DH kit. I believe they are super brights and all color match. For the flashers I got some more Comets. I color matched wherever they went(ie...orange flasher above the HQ, red flasher above left targets) I ended up with a flex warm white in the bullet over the gun to simulate a spark...hehe. Also went with a purple flasher under right ramp. Hope that answers your question. If not, ask away

Quoted from Scoot:

It is actually a little lower in this picture. I raised it a little. Funny thing is, it seems like whatever position I have it, I can barely push down on it from the top of the playfiled and it will lower ever so slightly, no matter if the nut underneath is tight or not. I have it flush with the pf now. I’m starting to think it may be in the connector J902-3. If I can figure out how to re-pin it, that’s going to be my next step. I noticed the pin inside the connector looks messed up.

Maybe the 3 screws holding the entire magnet bracket have worn out holes making it lower a little bit. Could always add some toothpick and some wood glue in the holes and then tighten the screws up. Might hold better.

#1470 10 months ago

Has to be someone not too far from you that you can have them try your mpu in their machine and see if it causes the same problem? At least that could rule out if it’s something on there. That was how mine was narrowed down. Just a thought

Maybe a dumb question, but does it have to be tested in a Dirty Harry? I mean, could it be an Addams family or something else? I have BSD but it’s the only other Williams game I got. Again probably a dumb question. I assume it needs to be DH to test their magnet with my board.

I’ll check em. I know I had them loose at one point. Maybe I didn’t tighten them back enough.

#1473 10 months ago

I would think the same game would be the best way to test. Otherwise you’d be switching out roms.
If it was a problem somewhere in the mpu not sure where it would show up in a different game or if it would. But someone who knows more may have a way to do it.

Why would a switch trigger two locations? Thanks.

Just joined the club last weekend and beyond excited... been looking for a DH for months and finally picked one up. So...

I’d really appreciate some advise on where to start with a DIY “shop” job. I’d like to thoroughly clean the playfield and replace any parts that receive a lot of wear & tear during gameplay.

Bear in mind that I’m a complete newb when it comes to pinball (DH is my first purchase), and parusing the owners manual made my head spin. I’m mechanically inclined, but most electrical work is over my head. Removing everything from the playfield has me a bit worried to say the least, but everyone has to start somewhere, right? Right?!

Sorry for the long-winded post, but just excited to get my DH in top form. Just need a point in the right direction to get me started.

Thanks all!

So I replaced the diode on the safehouse...., no change. Took J5 off the opto board, and it went away. Reattached, same problem occurred. Checked the diode on the center switch, registers fine. Checked the CPU by jumping the pins, everything was fine. All switches that are closed, should be per the manual. Running out of ideas. Any suggestions?

Yeah sorry diodes are tricky when I watch videos on them. Can you pull j1-j4 off at different times to see if it helps isolate it a little more.

Anything you take apart will require a lot of pictures. Go slow and note how everything functions. The ramps on DH are somewhat of a pain to reinstall so take your time with those. If you need any help, the search feature on google or here on pinside will likely have an answer to your questions. Work in smaller areas at a time instead of breaking the whole playfield down at once. Replace the balls if you haven't already done so. Clean the playfield and wax it with a good car wax. Most importantly, enjoy your work. Nothing is more satisfying than to fix an issue or improve the looks of your pin with your own hands. Oh, and congrats on your first pin. It won't be your last.

Maybe consider a partial shop job, where you only do the sections that you are comfortable with.
The rear section of the DH playfield has a lot going on.
I know I wouldn't want to tackle that as my first attempt.
If you do a full topside teardown, or even for a partial, take lots of notes and more pictures than you could possibly need.

#1495 9 months ago

Appreciate the advise, thank you! If there’s one common thing I’ve read so far is taking lots of pictures... HA! Definitely will take that advise to heart. Makes ya feel sorry for all the pinball fanatics pre-smart phones. I can picture Polaroids scattered all over the living room floor as “notes” like a crime scene investigator.

Hey DH Crew, first time owner long time passion to own a PIN.
By sheer luck I have purchased DH from a guy who was moving and didn't want to get down his stairs. Well lucky for me, and some help we were able to get down from the second floor safely home to my home office.

The machine was filthy with caked on dirt, carbon and dust behind the head and playing field.

Jumped right in after 50-100 plays of understanding how the parts work. Started to order parts and worked on a single section at a time.

Took all the plastic, ramps, pegs, pins, screws off the playing field for a deep clean. (Not a full Strip, expect the back part of the playing field).

Since I was already in there with 1/2 the bulbs not working, replaced with all new LED bulbs with the added flashers and LED strips on the front and rear of the playing field.

All new Rubber all the way around.

Swapped out the DMD to a color DMD since the screen most likely had a capacitor or gas issue.

I wish I would have discovered this forum a few weeks ago when the process started especially reading that the back board of the playing field comes out with 8 screws. Elbow up in the air, wrist bent, neck to the shoulder, right hand over my head trying to hold something while I hold the ramp down on the plastic risers. Long story short got the left ramp in.

Here is where the fun begins:
Since the playing field was thoroughly cleaned by removing gunk, dirty and all the other crap and the plastic gun was removed and cleaned.
Lucky me, I don't have the lame bull issue that drops out.

I am noticing now that when I do "GUN SHOT" something is catching the ball on the playing field and launching over to the yellow police ramp and or it has some how been stuck on the rear left plastic 2x times now.

Has anybody ran into this issue before? Since the new ramp was installed, could this be the issue with catching the metal plate?

I almost would want the ball to lame right now, because I am worried it's going to damage plastic or worse break the glass while the kids are playing on it.

Pictures coming soon of the progress. #dirtyharry

Hey guys, I don’t have much experience with these DMD games. I need to get a replacement main ramp as mine is broken off at a support. The main ramp looks like it has decals on the bottom of it in at least two places. I found the left one on Marco. Is the right available?
