    Quoted from Drewscruis:

Look like beard cnc is fully operational...lol

Yeah but he is scared as hell to fuck up
This router sometimes “pulls” the wrong way and it was real hard to obtain this professional whitewood from Mirco...(I mean...good guy but just as easy to contact as our king )

A palm router or laminate trimmer would work perfect for the small detail routing. Easy to control, less power, and bits are smaller

    #10553 4 years ago

Man,this feels wroooong as hell...it was playing real well and now we are stripping all the rgb’s out...part of the process to strip the entire playfield...sadly.

I'm just curious why you're replacing/redoing the entire playfield. I mean, was the old that that bad to warrant all the extra work? ...not second guessing you guys, just wondering.

    #10556 4 years ago

Beard is doing a lot of testruns tonight...some work out, some sorta work out...but overall the outcome is really good

hey guys, nice to see your thread each week, have fun tonight.

also checking out the progress of your Monte and have to agree it did look purplish - coming together nicely....

Oh i can explain that in short, they don’t sell the right thickness plywood so this proto field is actually too thick...which causes all the parts to malfunction...for a example: the 2 pop bumpers on the lower plafield barely work cuz the actuator ring sits too low on the playfield.
Other example: all the target switches don’t make it all the way through the playfield, they lie with their chin on this playfield, barely sticking through.
Everything pinball is based on the right thickness playfield.
We obviously did not start with a professional whitewood because we fuck up a lot...and when i say a lot..i mean a loooot.

Hey friend,yeah...plus we pushed it outside and when the sun hit it,it became like violet and pinkish...it was really bad..
    Very childish flipflop color.
    I absolutely hated it..
I gave the paint shop the color code from my model S , so it is Tesla black now.
A real nice deep black, looks amazing up close...
No 30 footer paint job by the way, this is an official approved body shop, this car looks good even from 2 feet.
    Fabulous!

    #10572 4 years ago

yeah a trimmer router would do the trick, do you have one with a smaller round base then having a router guide would make life easier

    #10573 4 years ago

With all the repeated shapes for the inserts would it be worth your while to make a template for routing each shape?

    Nice playfield

Play some pin, you guys deserved it.

    #10576 4 years ago

I tried using a router manually when I was building an arcade cabinet from scratch. It doesn’t work very well. It’s a pretty ‘wild’ machine and difficult to steer around. After a few disasters I started to always pull it along a piece of wood clamped down for a straight line or using a template with a copy bit for shapes. Also look at the arrow that is usually on the machine. Always push it along in that direction.

    #10577 4 years ago

this is what I was thinking you are needing, yes you need access to a 3d printer and a design to suit your router and for the type of inserts you are using but would be perfect for all future builds. Check out this other homebrew.

    Wow those are great man
But we counted our inserts and basically we have only 21 weird shaped inserts and 29 round ones.
So we can totally freehand this when we take our time...i am gonna try to operate the router next friday, see if i have a steadier hand!

If you got time somebody here might be able to print that template for you and mail it to you. Unfortunately, my printer is currently down. The FET for the bed burned. Need to replace it.

    #10580 4 years ago

what about a Do It Yourself template, and happy to help where possible

I have a number of the inserts drawn, and if you let me know the insert type, cutter diameter and disc / router base diameter (if round) I can draw a template and send to you as a print image with a ruler on it to scale up and then glue on to a bit of scrap plywood and then cut out the template shape and then do a test router cut on some scrap then you can cut a heap out with a few carefully cut out templates

    #10581 4 years ago

One of the most concerning things I’ve found with manual routers - not only that they’ve got a lot of torque and if you catch something weird or accidentally lift one side a bit it can get crazy on you and suddenly In a flash a bunch of wood is gone that wasn’t supposed to be removed — but also if you completely were to lose control of it (slips out of your hands) it ain’t stopping, no paddle switch on these beasts...

I’ve never had the latter happen but been close when I’ve accidentally hit a screw in the pf.. maybe not as dangerous as a table saw but they could still f you up real quick

It’s only like 21 difficult inserts,no sweat, the rest is all round,we’ll get it done

Yes it really was a painful job for my hands.
But you can drill various round holes first at insert deep. then use the dremel.
Fit it 100 times after every stroke with the dremel.
When it fits then dril through the playfield.
It goes real fast, 2 days work.
I try to use a bracket but that don't work because you can't see what you're doing.

Good luck take it easy and next week we will see a great looking playfield i'am sure.
keep up the great work guys.

    #10588 4 years ago

Templates can give you a high quality cut that can be done really quick. . ..

    https://mpf.kantert.net/forum/index.php@topic=843.0.html

If you look to the right of the first playfield image, you can see the 'jig' I used for making the templates and that approach worked well for a variety of shapes. I was also doing it with the lip to hold the insert vs a straight through cut. I can provide more detail on creating the templates if you have interest (popsicle sticks, the insert and some scrap wood and a 'flush trim' router bit).
