I never have to worry about food if shit hits the fan. The pond next door that I have access to is loaded full of fish.

Plenty of rabbits, squirrels, and even some deer here.

That's probably enough for a small handful of people. But if *everyone* is after those resources, then those resources will disappear very quickly.

Just look at how quickly the shelves were completely decimated in stores when the pandemic first hit.

    Quoted from AlexF:

No ketchup on a hotdog I think is mainly a Chicago area thing. I'm North of there and I don't think anybody really cares up here. I do have a friend at work that likes ketchup on his bratwurst. His wife thinks that is appalling and will berate him about it. Apparently bratwurst is different? He happily does it at work and I always joke that I'm going to tell on him.

I grew up putting ketchup on hot dogs, but don't care for it now. I don't like mustard either. I like either minced onions or BBQ sauce on hot dogs. If I can't get either one of those, then I'll just have it plain rather than putting ketchup or mustard on it. There's also a local hot dog stand that makes really good chili dogs.

    Quoted from punkin:

I confess that i thought hard about auctioning this guys personal videos of me. Figured if i could get some people to get together and donate some money to charity i'd let this guy post whatever it is he think's he has:
    Greetings!
I have to share bad news with you.
Approximately few months ago I have gained access to your devices, which you use for internet browsing.
After that, I have started tracking your internet activities.
Here is the sequence of events:
Some time ago I have purchased access to email accounts from hackers (nowadays, it is quite simple to purchase such thing online).
Obviously, I have easily managed to log in to your email account ([email protected]).
One week later, I have already installed Trojan virus to Operating Systems of all the devices that you use to access your email.
In fact, it was not really hard at all (since you were following the links from your inbox emails).
    All ingenious is simple. =)
This software provides me with access to all the controllers of your devices (e.g., your microphone, video camera and keyboard).
I have downloaded all your information, data, photos, web browsing history to my servers.
I have access to all your messengers, social networks, emails, chat history and contacts list.
My virus continuously refreshes the signatures (it is driver-based), and hence remains invisible for antivirus software.
Likewise, I guess by now you understand why I have stayed undetected until this letter...
While gathering information about you, I have discovered that you are a big fan of adult websites.
You really love visiting porn websites and watching exciting videos, while enduring an enormous amount of pleasure.
Well, I have managed to record a number of your dirty scenes and montaged a few videos, which show the way you masturbate and reach orgasms.
If you have doubts, I can make a few clicks of my mouse and all your videos will be shared to your friends, colleagues and relatives.
I have also no issue at all to make them available for public access.
I guess, you really don't want that to happen, considering the specificity of the videos you like to watch, (you perfectly know what I mean) it will cause a true catastrophe for you.
    Let's settle it this way:
You transfer $1650 USD to me (in bitcoin equivalent according to the exchange rate at the moment of funds transfer), and once the transfer is received, I will delete all this dirty stuff right away.
After that we will forget about each other. I also promise to deactivate and delete all the harmful software from your devices. Trust me, I keep my word.
This is a fair deal and the price is quite low, considering that I have been checking out your profile and traffic for some time by now.
In case, if you don't know how to purchase and transfer the bitcoins - you can use any modern search engine.
Here is my bitcoin wallet: 1Hjpu99iHc3oi55ZJKf6RHhKbwit8vEzTS
You have less than 48 hours from the moment you opened this email (precisely 2 days).
Things you need to avoid from doing:
*Do not reply me (I have created this email inside your inbox and generated the return address).
*Do not try to contact police and other security services. In addition, forget about telling this to you friends. If I discover that (as you can see, it is really not so hard, considering that I control all your systems) - your video will be shared to public right away.
*Don't try to find me - it is absolutely pointless. All the cryptocurrency transactions are anonymous.
*Don't try to reinstall the OS on your devices or throw them away. It is pointless as well, since all the videos have already been saved at remote servers.
Things you don't need to worry about:
*That I won't be able to receive your funds transfer.
    - Don't worry, I will see it right away, once you complete the transfer, since I continuously track all your activities (my trojan virus has got a remote-control feature, something like TeamViewer).
*That I will share your videos anyway after you complete the funds transfer.
    - Trust me, I have no point to continue creating troubles in your life. If I really wanted that, I would do it long time ago!
Everything will be done in a fair manner!
One more thing... Don't get caught in similar kind of situations anymore in future!
My advice - keep changing all your passwords on a frequent basis

It's just automated spam pulling from a list of compromised online accounts. They don't have anything. It's just a scare tactic.

It's wise to use different passwords for every account. That way, if one online account is compromised, whomever obtains a password can't log into any of your other online accounts.

    Quoted from swampfire:

The best defense against ransomware is to back up your computer every night. If they encrypt the disk, you can just re-image it. I’m always amazed that these larger companies get caught with their pants down (no backups to fall back on).

Sometimes the ransomware lays dormant or hidden for a period of time before it springs into action, so it can end up on backups.

Which also reminds me of my uncle that likes to grow tomatoes. He spends a lot of money on miracle grow, and a lot of time watering the plants, and last I noticed tomatoes are pretty cheap at the store without all the work.

Hell, he probably spends more money on miracle grow than what he would just buying tomatoes as needed in the first place.

Garden vegetables generally taste better. Plus some people just enjoy doing the gardening regardless if there is much of a difference or not.

Corn in the cob? Oh, definitely so much better than store bought.

The downside is that the squirrels go after it here. Though, what is frustrating is that if the squirrels manage to get the corn, they will just have like 3 bites out of each ear and that's it. They don't even eat the whole thing. 3 bites and onto the next ear. It's like they destroy the crop out of spite or something.

I really think though he should start a new topic, to just list verified for real sites, at this point with so many scammers popping up all of the time it just seems like listing real sites would be easier.

Well, there's a few reasons why we don't.

    1) It's an impossible task. There are *a lot* of pinball sites, suppliers, distributors. More and more every day. It's difficult to stay on top of it all and keep any sort of list up-to-date.
    2) There have been a few cases where shops/distributors that were formerly in good standing had things happen and took a turn for the worse.
    3) We try not to officially endorse anyone or provide official recommendations, otherwise that could come back to bite us because of #2 (or simply because someone had a bad experience for whatever reason), or people can get upset because they're "not on the list". So, we simply offer many self-service options to advertise on the site if people so choose.

I confess i was talking about the longevity of my old Sony TV. Woke up to it not working the other day! I went on marketplace to quickly find a cheap replacement. Found one for $100 & it has a better picture! Now to get it up on the wall
    [quoted image]

I use an LG LCD 37" HDTV as my primary computer monitor and have been using it for over 10 years. I'm wondering when it's going to die, and since 37" TVs aren't a size that's made any more, how the heck I'm going to find something to replace it with. I don't want to go smaller (32"), and I can't really accommodate something much bigger (40").

I just checked and it has almost 23,000 hours clocked on it.

On the upside, TVs now cost less than half of what I paid for them back then.

Long ago I had some friends that smoked weed all the time, and the stuff they smoked smelled really good and I miss them now, and that weed smell.

I really don't like the smell.

There were a few people at pintastic last month who reeked of reefer, and it hit me like a brick wall that made me almost gag it was so strong.

It wasn't the faint odor that you tend to smell with certain users--I don't particularly like it, but my nose can tolerate that.

But whomever was at the show must have been soaking in a pot soup for hours and then just stepped out of wherever they came from and onto the show floor. It was fairly unpleasant.

    Quoted from pinzrfun:

Been working from home since March 2020, just announced we'll be going back Jan 17 in a hybrid schedule, 2 days in the office, 3 days from home.
I'm torn - it's easier to do the actual work at the office, it's just the actual GETTING to the office and everything that goes with it - get up an hour earlier to shower etc, even earlier if I have to shovel snow off the car/driveway, pack a lunch, having to share a bathroom with 3 or 4 other people who apparently all had White Castles for dinner - that kinda thing. The comforts of home are pretty comfy - I have a fire going right now while working and bs'ing on Pinside.

It's hard to give up some of those comfy perks. That's partly why there's the so called "great resignation" happening with folks resigning from their in-office gigs when they're being forced to return to the office, and then doing remote-only gigs instead.

I confess to being baffled by my 23-year-old son. He spent $500 on an NFT, one of 10,000 that were released by the “creator”. The deal is that when they release a comic, the people holding an NFT will get 30% of the profits. So, he says, “it’s an investment” because he gets 0.0003% of the profits from a comic series. He can’t see that it’s a pyramid scheme - the creator already made $5M, and hasn’t even published the first issue. I confess that I’d having an easier time talking to him if it was a drinking or gambling problem, because at least I could relate to those.

Maybe think of it as a kickstarter with a potentially small reward if the project actually reaches completion?

It's not really an investment if you don't get your principal back plus interest.

IMHO, if you're not the one creating and selling an overpriced NFT, you've already lost.

Participation is mandatory, as described in Title 13 of the U.S. Code.4 Refusal to respond can result in a fine. However, no one has been prosecuted for failing to respond to the census since the 1970 Census.

Can I refuse to answer a census question?
While participation in the census—and answering all questions—is mandatory, people occasionally leave a question blank. The Census Bureau uses a statistical procedure to fill in any missing responses.

Still kinda bothers me, people are really rude sometimes. I'm not perfect, and I'm not an expert on plumbing parts.

Don't think it's a reflection on you--it's not. It's their personal issue. Some people see others who fill a customer service rule as beneath them and not worthy of their time, energy, or respect. Personally, I really don't like people who act like this. In fact, I respect people in customer service roles significantly more since they often have to handle whatever negative or strange behavior that tends to get thrown their way, and they generally seem to employ the fortitude, composure, and skills to do so.

I love technology, however, I still don't trust it. I still feel a little WTF-ness when I leave the radio station unstaffed because I'm still paranoid the automation will spaz out. It doesn't.

For anything critically important, I try to have a backup option or analog backup solution in place that I can turn to temporarily.

Problem with your broadcast computer? Have a backup computer or and maybe even an MP3 player or CD player ready to swap in.

Internet service goes out? Have a backup line or cell service hot spot ready to switch to.

Phone dies? Have a backup contacts file somewhere, and maybe a few critical phone numbers written down somewhere.

Being able to quickly switch over to a secondary system to keep the train moving and more or less on time can make you look like a miracle worker and magician.

One thread even opened and locked before I got around to it.

People own hard copy media still?

Everything have is digital or streaming now.

Sure, what happens when licensing agreements expire and movies/shows leave a streaming service?

Streaming is convenient, until it isn't.

There are certain shows I've wanted to watch or revisit, but they either weren't available at all, or just not on any of the streaming services I use. If I have a disc, I can just pop it in whenever I want.

Then also there's the image quality. For the most part, HD streaming is pretty good, except when you want to watch a movie with a lot of dark scenes. Because of video compression, dark images tend to be rather low quality to save on data/storage. Compression essentially throws out the image data that isn't usually necessary, but sometimes it actually is.

Plus, streaming services don't offer any of the additional content that usually come on discs, such as deleted scenes, commentary, interviews, making-of/BTS videos, etc.

I just noticed I rolled the odometer past 27,000 posts. That's a lot of posts and a lot of time spent on the forums here. That's a lot of people I've gotten to meet from all over the place that I would've otherwise never met.

Just today, someone PMed me a question about a thread I started 6 years ago that I had completely forgotten about until that member brought it up again. I imagine I've probably let a lot of what I've posted about fade into the background, given that large number of posts.

Of course, that's nothing compared to the post count LTG has racked up I don't think I'll ever catch up to that

It depends on where you live (country, suburbs, developments, town, small city, big city, etc), what services are available, what the costs are, what the local laws are, and (if applicable) what HOA rules are in place.

It's not one size fits all.

Then there are also state laws like for any potentially hazardous materials such as electronics & batteries have to be properly recycled (ie, take them to the nearest big box store), and aren't supposed to go in the regular household garbage.

But seriously, if you have a truck, just hose it down on the off-chance that you have a leak.

Or, for kitchen garbage, the trick is two paper shopping bags as a liner to sop up anything wet, then it goes inside of a plastic trash bag when you're ready to take it away.

And then if you're really worried about a leak, some sort of tray/tote/bin for transporting the kitchen garbage.

I confess i cringe when friends/family suggest "Let's go out to dinner!"
I hate eating out (unless there's an associated activity - watching a game at a bar w friends, etc). I eat fast - I'm always the first one done, and usually have my dishes and the kitchen cleaned up before anyone else is even done eating. The thought of driving to a restaurant, staring at a menu for 10 minutes, having small talk for another half hour until the food arrives, eating (how long does it take to eat a plate of food, 10, 15min tops?), then sitting there while everyone else finishes their meals is absolute torture to me. And God forbid I'm with people (my sis and her hubby come to mind) who like to order coffee and sit and chat after they eat, maybe order a piece of pie after a little while. Please - shoot me.
I have better things to do with 3 hours of my life than pay $13.50 for a burger at Red Robin.

It's not really about the food or what it costs--it's about hanging out and socializing.

Do you have any urgent care facilities/centers in your area? They handle non-life threatening issues/injuries. You would be more likely to see a doctor more quickly at one of those places than in an ER. You would basically be at the bottom of the list in an ER since your injury doesn't appear to be immediately life threatening.

No, it's just one of the standard action figures. The speeder bike is basically the same as the one from the 80s. Otherwise, it pretty much looks like the same casting/die with some retooling.

    AND put another table in.

That probably means pins would have to go in order to make space and/or to buy a new pool table.

When interest in pool cools off again, you may end up stuck with a pool table that isn't being used. I don't think the secondary market for pool tables is nearly as hot as pinball is.

But if pool is on a sustained upswing, you gotta do what's best for the business.

Anyone know why a turkey became a turkey? Always thought it was weird. Suppose I could look it up, but some people love posting answers.

    https://richmond40bowl.com/why-is-it-called-a-turkey-when-you-bowl-three-strikes-in-a-row/

During the late 1700s and into the early years of the 1800s, bowling tournaments were a popular diversion for all, from the working class to the aristocracy. The prizes typically awarded at these tournaments were gift baskets of food, often containing coveted items like a large ham or, you guessed it, a turkey!

Turkeys became a common prize for winning a bowling tournament, and as bowling a strike became easier over time thanks to changes in equipment and facilities, prizes were set for multiple strikes in a row. Bowling a turkey became synonymous with three strikes in a row, while other achievements got their own names, like Hambone, Wild Turkey, Golden Turkey, and Dinosaur. (4 consecutive strikes, 6 consecutive strikes, 9 consecutive strikes, and a perfect game.)

No idea if that's actually true, or just an urban legend that's been passed around.

I recycle, but I’m pretty sure 90% of it ends up in a landfill. When I was in Vancouver, they had 3-4 different recycling bins, which makes a lot more sense to me. It eliminates the cost of sorting.

Some towns near me have special recycling trucks (with separate compartments for each type of recyclable) that go around and pick up recyclables separately from trash.

The town I'm in now doesn't do that, though. Everything just ends up in "single stream recycling" dumpsters. Supposedly everything gets separated and sorted at the trash facility, but who knows.

Some establishments have separate garbage cans for cans, plastic bottles, paper, and trash, but I've seen custodians just emptying those all in the same dumpster anyway.

Thanks, i don't mind my data being collected, i like it when spotify does it.

That's a different kind of data collection--that's just playing preferences.

What I meant was analytics for tracking what you do on websites, tracking what websites you visit, fingerprinting your browser and creating a shadow profile across websites that use the same tracker services (basically compiling all your website browsing habits togethers). In some cases, recording in real-time what you click on when visiting a website.

None of that data collection benefits you directly, and you lose some privacy in the process.

Unfortunately, if you're finding that you are being frequently blocked, that could indicate that some members may prefer not to interact with you. It might be time to reconsider some of your posting habits if this is an issue for you.
