    I wax my shooter rod...

I don't like the way Stern does their modes - empty, unfunny, kind of pointless. AC/DC is a huge dud for me because, however amazing and exciting the scoring and ruleset is, there's no story there. It feels like I'm playing a big calculator.

    That's interesting. What game(s) have a story?

    #1054 6 years ago

    Det_Deckard.

Ha! You and my wife would get along well! I want cool stuff to happen too, just trying to figure out the rules to make it happen...

To give a basic example, WH20 has a story - ride the rapids and get to the place - and the funny quotes and good music beef up the relatively rudimentary "shoot the arrows" gameplay. A more complex (really, ideal) example is Road Show, where you're given a very concrete story, which is constantly being expanded upon or detailed, whether by the (clever) modes or all the other things happening o nthe playfield, which gives you a sense of their being a world under the glass. Stern modes always feel so soulless and underachieving.

    #1056 6 years ago

I knew you were gonna say Road Show.
    Either that, or TSPP.

How do you feel about The Hobbit? That, to me, is the pinnacle of "story based" Pinball.

    #1057 6 years ago

Errr, haven't played "The Hobbit " how does it stack up next to WoZ?

That's a good question! I need to really ponder that before answering. Both games are definitely incredible and both are very story driven. Even though TH has a ton of modes, I'd say WOZ is more immersive. But TH is so epic, it feels like playing a RPG.

    Both great games for sure.

I am more interested in flashing lights and how the mechanical toys work than the rules. Rules are for at work or made by my wife. I want to just see cool shit when I play pinball.

Lol, same here. I just love shooting lit shots, combos, and making the game light up. I'm trying to learn the rules of modern Stern games but feels like studying for a test or something.

Well, OK. I'll say TSPP. I own the game, and I'm not sure I like it

Haha I totally love Road Show. TSPP is very good, but it feels sort of mechanically clunky and I wish someone would do a playfield color swap with the Data East version, the Stern version is so grungy.

TBH I've never managed to play enough of The Hobbit to totally understand the "story" (why doesn't it have a buy-in option??), but I find the playfield to be sort of unsatisfying to shoot.

    #1062 6 years ago

My wife only allows me to have 2 pinball machines in the house, but before I sell one I'll have to buy its replacement first. That way I have 3 machines.
I give my machine the bird after a bad ball
My machines are set to 5 balls.

    #1063 6 years ago

I have always maintained Thunderbirds is a good choice for a pinball theme.

    #1064 6 years ago

Sopranos has a good story. Climb the ranks to become the Boss. Problem with story driven is that they become too linear and a good game is a long game and makes you want to move on to something else.

I agree completely! My two DMD games (TOTAN and Junk Yard) are story-based with a complete narrative arc, various settings, a bunch of interesting, distinct characters (I count 6 in JY and 6 in TOTAN, not including monsters), and decisions that effect the outcome of the story. Simply going for a high score doesn't excite me - even my EM's are objective-based.

Sterns seem to be about "complete the shots" and light shot multipliers and get a Multiball. Like you said so well, giant calculators. Game of Thrones is somewhat story-based but they still managed to make it boring with repetitive gameplay and over-emphasis on scoring.

    1. This is my favorite thread on pinside.
    2. I played in a tournament at a pinball show a few weeks ago and couldn't believe my scores were so much lower than normal since I owned two of the games. I chalked it up to having a bad night, but couldn't admit that it was because my game(s) at home are set to five balls and I really am not that good.

Love it, I suck too and playing 5 ball and blaming it on my 11 year old.... You suck so bad... wait I'm doing the same thing.....

    #1069 6 years ago

I don't wax my out lanes in fear that the ball will have a higher tendency to go down them, but I over wax the entrance to all ramps.

There is a laundromat with about 20 pins in it where our local group has tournaments periodically. One of the games (X-Files) is set at $.50 per credit, and it works fine if you drop quarters in it. However it also has a dollar bill acceptor installed on it, and when you put a dollar bill into it, the machine awards 12 credits (effectively 8 cents per credit). We noticed this aberration during a tournament one time, and we all took a vow not to inform the operator about it. That was probably 5 months ago, and it was still that way today when I went in and played, so he still hasn't noticed, LOL. Am I a bad person?

I hardly dare to post this as I am new here, but I guess most of you won't be able to throw rocks from the US all the way to Germany.

I was about 16 at the time and, like many boys who wanted to supplement their pocket money, had a paper round. One of the paperboys overheard that I was into pinball and he said he had one to sell. My Dad kindly went over to his place bought it for me. For the princely sum of 10 pounds!!!! I got a GTB Melody with a near perfect BG and a pretty good PF. (Just a little wear below the 4th kick-out hole.) A technically-minded friend quickly identified a couple of very minor issues and got it working. I enjoyed it, but at that time EEs like Black Hole and Centaur were out on route, so I didn't really appreciate my Melody for what it was: a beautiful EM wedgehead and fairly rare. The inevitable happened: it suffered a, for me and my pal, unfixable failure and this was before the internet, so very hard to find resources and I certainly didn't have the money to hire a real tech. Sadly, I sold it to a friend - let's call him Julian - for 5 pounds. But that is not the bad part...

Julian put his newly-acquired Melody into his parents' garage, but did nothing with it. I guess he just wanted to own it. About a year later the friend who had originally fixed the game and I were over at Julian's place and we went outside for a smoke and had a look at the sad-looking Melody. Now comes the bad part... We decided to re-theme the pin. Considering we had absolutely no tools, talent or knowledge or any of the skills needed to re-theme a pin, which we couldn't even get working, this was a more than dumb idea. Sadly, we didn't just quickly give up. We started on the one job we could easily do: scratching the paint off the backglass to get it ready for our new theme!!! Oh the shame. The owner even gave us permission. After about 10 minutes we were bored and left the destroyed backglass with the rest of the game. Sure enought, Julian's parents eventually wanted their garage space back and so Melody went to the dump.

I have very few regrets in life and at the end of the day, a pinball machine is a material item. No one died, no one got sick, but I still think back to that Melody with a little sadness. And I could truly kick myself in the ass. Doh!

I've started looking for a new machine - not because I'm particularly drawn to the theme or the gameplay, but because I found the space for one more.

    #1073 6 years ago

I voted "Absolutely Yes" that I would buy a Slayer pinball machine in the new Stern-Slayer thread that was started.
I feel better now after confessing that I was not being truthful.

    #1074 6 years ago

Bought a parts game. Filthy... no legs... cabinet delaminating... back box scattered across a field...

Playfield looks halfway decent... the quite serious thought runs through my head...

"Ya know, maybe I can restore this thing..."

The operator deserves to be told if they are supporting your group and allow tournaments there. They made a mistake and you continue to take advantage of it. I guess, as a hobby operator I have had similar dumbass attacks and sure is nice when your players are honest and let you know.

When I run across clocks or watches that aren't working, I set the time to 5:00....because it's always five o'clock somewhere!

    #1077 6 years ago

Although I think the baywatch movie looks good awful......I will watch it because the pin is so epic.

Whenever I'm doing my daily scroll through pinball for sale ads and my wife asks me what I'm doing I say "just looking at porn dear!" So she doesn't think I'm going to get another pin.

    - I can't stand Addams Family and sold it after owning for 6 months.
    - I spend about 95% of my time fixing pinball machines and about 5% of my time actually playing them.

    #1082 6 years ago

I hate Steve Ritchie pins. They're like souped-up pitch-n-bats, every shot fires the ball right back at the flippers. "The ball is wild!"...ly flung straight in your face, great.

edit: also I hate that voice.

    #1083 6 years ago

BSD is my grail pin. As soon as we get a BSD, I will find a new grail pin.

I don't get why Congo is such a big deal. (It's fun but not a long-term keeper.) If it's because of that photo with the girl playing it with no pants on - then please no one take a photo like that with BSD until after I get one.

So, since I have gone "pro" and am starting to show some decent sales, I figured the better tools were in order. I thought I would start with some .156 crimpers since those always seem to be the toughest for me to do well, especially when I do two wires at once. Spent over $350 for the best Molex has to offer. Decided they were the greatest crimpers ever, despite being a huge PITA to load a crimp into.
    IMG_9417 (resized).JPGIMG_9417 (resized).JPG

After a week or so and over 100 crimps I figured out that the crimp holder swiveled out.

We need to start up a monthly award for:
    Best Pinside Confession.

Hmmm. What should we award as a prize and trophy/certificate?

    #1093 6 years ago

Im pretty sure the frustration of loading that thing without opening it was more than enough of a reward.

I feel that putting aftermarket toppers on a game is a valid personal choice - people should do whatever makes them happy.

But in my heart I know that those etched lucite toppers with the color changing lights are the tackiest mod you can put on a pin.

My Champion Pub came with the said topper. It lights up the room nicely, and is well done. I tolerate it.
