As some are aware, I have been working with a few other pinsiders and come up with a pretty cool (I think) sound package for The Big Lebowski. The purpose of this thread is to gather further suggestions moving forward. I am not interested in doing one off versions for different people (way too much work!), but definitely open to feedback from the larger group on potential changes going forward. Everyone has different musical tastes, but hoping we can make further modifications that stay close to the movie/theme...

Also, some shoutouts to some key contributors:

KSP1138 - For the original randomization idea. We used his script as the baseline.
timlah79 - For additional music enhancements, additions, and callouts!
ray-dude - For helping with the distribution and hosting.

Here is where we are at currently:

1. I Got It Bad (and That Ain't Good)

Quoted from bemmett:

I still need to figure out how to get this on my game....i.e. someone that is smarter than me doing it so I don't screw something up.
So excited to get this on mine eventually!

PM me. Worst case I can send you a drive that is plug and play.

Quoted from Flash71:

Has this been updated with new songs? I’m not sure I have this version with the fellow Pinsider collaborations. How can I upgrade ?

PM sent

#9 1 year ago
Quoted from Concretehardt:

I’m guessing there are still only three songs available when the game is turned on and those songs are random and cannot be changed unless the game is restarted?

Yeah, not much we can do about that since they are loaded into memory by the DP code. We did add the ability to randomize rug mode songs, Nihilist Showdown, and some callouts though

#13 1 year ago
Quoted from tatman9999:

I think I have the older version. May need to try the newest.

Shoot me a PM for instructions

This is definitely the most stable this mod has been and most seem happy with it. It is tough since everyone has different musical taste (which I understand), but I am also not interested in customizing images for individuals. So there are really 3 things I have outstanding:

1. The Gambler. Some love it and 1 person keeps messaging me saying they can't stand it. What say you? Should it stay or go? I personally like it, but bias.

2. Grouping. Does it make sense to group songs together? Currently on startup we randomize within each song category (Hotel Calif, Oye Como Va, Run through), but it wouldn't be that hard to group them...e.g. I could re-organized so that all the song #1s played or #2s, etc. on start up. A good example would be to make the original tracks all #1 do that if #1 hit, you would get all three of those songs for that session. OR do we keep as is and everything is a surprise each power up?

3. Any other song swaps? Would love to know!

Thanks!

Quoted from digitaldocc:

Any chance you guys will still be doing this towards Q4 of 2023? I'd love to dude up the sounds.

For sure. Just shoot me a PM. I have a DIY option (free + a couple supplies) if you are willing to invest a few minutes OR I can image it for you.

#22 1 year ago

OK - so based on feedback, I think I am going to leave the latest version (v6) alone for a bit. Played it a lot over the past couple weeks and I am pretty happy with where it is at. Please keep the feedback coming in this thread!

#26 1 year ago
Quoted from timlah79:

Yes a challenge for sure but I just surpassed that hurdle today. Stay tuned. Dude Abides replacements are coming soon. Still fine tuning.

This is going to be soooo cool...stay tuned!

Quoted from KSP1138:

Somebody let me know when the final image is ready. I was tinkering with a way to be able to toggle between randomizing the music and defined playlists. And having the modded music stored on a mounted USB thumb drive instead of the internal drive itself, to make changing songs easier.

I will let you know. Still a few tweaks left!

#33 1 year ago

OK - version 7 is coming soon. We just started putting this thing through the ringer and will be distributing to a few folks for beta in the next week or so to work out any kinks....

Lots of changes coming. Highlights:

- timlah79 killed it and figured out the Dude Abides wizard mode. He did some amazing work and weaved in Placiere and an instrumental Viva Las Vegas that fits perfectly. He even figured out how to replicate the drugged effect to overlay.

- I downloaded higher quality audio files for a couple songs that weren't the absolute highest quality.

- I re-cut all of the Hotel California and Running through the Jungle tracks so that the intro lengths matched the DP stock lengths. This fixes the issue where the outro would loop and repeat since they were too short.

- Tim added some additional callouts for the "Let's go bowling" ("That creep can roll man")

- Tim added another bowling loop (Tammy)

- Tim added another track to "Female Form" rug mode (Lujon)

- Tim added another track to "See What Happens" (Branded Theme Song)

- I swapped out Babba 'O Riley for Let it Ride (BTO). Babba is a great song, but doesn't fit as nicely.

- I leveled all the songs to be the same volume across the board. This allows a more consistent experience.

- I bumped the music volume to 55% from the stock 40%

There is probably more I missed, but we have been busy. Right now I have the script also randomizing the Dude Abides Wizard music between Stock and Tim's. So on power up, you will get one or the other. This keeps it fresh and fun!

More to come on the release. Big thanks to @timlah79, excellent work!

We are hoping that after this is pushed out, we can let it settle for a bit. Cheers Dudes!

I suppose I can just remove those completely. I have no way of knowing when Family Mode is enabled, so better to error on the safe side...

#58 1 year ago
Quoted from pascal-pinball:

why did you put the song "looking at my backdoor" on the regular multiball? This multiball is all about the gutterballs scene and needs the song "what condition my condition was in"

The Character Multiball still uses “What condition my condition was in”, didn’t change that, just added original track. Looking at my back door we just replaced with original track and then timlah79 did a custom track (random between the two).

Not sure what you are talking about…

#59 1 year ago
Quoted from digitaldocc:

Thank God. I was going to cancel my order. Not because of the mirco playfield issues but because I thought you were going to nerf the audio. Thank you Thank you thank you.

LOL - this is just a mod dude. It has no bearing on DPs stock music. Definitely wouldn’t cancel anything based on this mod

I am having an issue trying to export my database. Hoping someone can assist with what I am doing wrong. I insert a USB stick into one of the empty USB ports in the backbox. When I choose database export, I get an error message "USB Stick issue". I have tried it with numerous USB sticks but have the same issue with all of them.
According to the DP support FAQ, it says: "On this USBkey a TBLupdate zipped should be present". I have the 1.11 zip file on the stick but still gives me an error. Interestingly, I can update the code to 1.11 with this USB stick, so not sure why it keeps failing?
Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks
Ed

The newer OS (Arch Linux) seems to be way more picky about the format of the USB stick. Before you add the ZIP file, make sure the USB stick is formatted to NTFS. Then try again.

They are a super cool group at DP. Realize that they can never support this as a company. Which I think we all get. Let’s just stay cool on our side, stick to this thread, and all should be good

Releasing v7.2 this week. timlah79 was back in the lab again working his magic. If you have v7.1, there is no need to panic, the changes are impactful, but minor enough that you don't need to go get another drive if you are not on the DIY path.

Changelog:

- Removed my original Oye Como Va cut since it was identical to Tims
- Added a different cut of the Gambler. They are different enough that it is worth having both. Sounds great.
- Level and balancing on some remaining songs.
- Looping on all the tracks so that there is no longer a natural song fade out at the end...rather, now it loops back to the beginning without fade.
- Remove my original Run through the Jungle cut since it was identical to Tims

Current State of 7.2:

Just messing around and testing some bonus loops (not done yet). I cycled the game a couple times to mix up the songs.

#96 1 year ago
Quoted from digitaldocc:

Just curious, I saw you power cycling inbetween games. Is that how sound sets change?

Yep. The music/callouts randomize on every power up. I typically leave it on for each session, but since I was testing stuff out I cycled it a couple times to mix it up!

Not sure if you all have noticed the bonus sound sequences on the new release, but timlah79 killed it. It is impressive

I have actually had a few requests to remove the Gambler. I think the current version is polished up pretty nice. I might do another version with an alternate playlist…just for variety. Or maybe do a larger collection to randomize

Alright. I may regret this. But suggestions from the group on songs you all would like to see?

Quoted from RobF:

I was thinking about this a little bit. Is it possible for the music selection script to be run on a cron schedule, or can it only be called once on boot? Is it possible to use soft links for the audio files that the system expects to point to the alternate files?

No - DP loads them into memory after they boot.

#131 11 months ago
Quoted from Freakyguy666:

Are you running version 1.12 now?

Yes, I have an updated image, but have t uploaded it yet.

That said, DP updates can happen as they normally would. They do not impact the music.

1 week later
#133 10 months ago
Quoted from KSP1138:

The script updates to allow for music and callout customizations is tested and ready to go. I'm going to send the files to jyeakley now for distribution.
A couple things. First, I successfully updated the code from 1.11 to 1.12 with the new music script in place, and there were no issues with that, everything still works. Second, I'm glad I tested it and looked at the logs because I discovered a problem that was in the prior version of the script too with the new OS. Since the script runs at bootup to copy the music it sometimes wouldn't completely finish up before the game code tried to load the files. This didn't cause any huge issues, but sometimes the song changes made by that run of the script wouldn't take effect, at least until the next startup. And sometimes the game startup would fail and need to restart itself if it was trying to load a given file at the same time the script was copying it. To avoid these issues I put in a 30 second delay before the game code starts up to give the music script enough time to finish copying all of the songs and callouts. There's a music script startup screen now with a countdown timer at the bottom because I know a black screen with nothing going on for a while would freak people out.

Testing this out over the next week or two. Should be ready in a couple weeks. Great stuff @ksp1138!

Is this new version ready?

Yeah, ping me.

If anyone here with some desire to help has a newer (past month) TBL, please PM me. It looks like DP started shipping with different LCD panels and the image I use doesn’t have the offset since the older machines are smaller.

Anyhow, I need to figure out how much the screen needs to be moved down (there is a setting for this in 1.12)

#141 10 months ago
Quoted from cpr9999:

Are the newer lcds just taller? Or are they wider?
Just curious.

My assumption is just taller (since DP just added that adjustment), but I can’t be certain until I work with someone that has one.

Two questions. I have a version 1.11 and just received the brand new larger screen lcd #949 will this version work with the new screen. Also does anyone have pictures of install. I don’t know where to plug in thanks

It will directly replace the hard drive in the bottom middle of the back box (Jackie Treehorn sticker on it). The latest version is already upgraded to 1.12, but DP version updates happen normally and do not impact the sound mod.

The adjustment for the display is in 1.12, so when you install the mod, just adjust the vertical display to 100.

Glad you are enjoying it!

Is there a version of the config file that would make it play the stock music and callouts? I actually think they did a pretty good job with the stock sound package and would like to add just a few things to that rather than start with the modded code and work back.

Yep! I am looking into doing a "Stock" option. Just need some time to do it

#172 8 months ago
Quoted from KSP1138:

If you have them, the stock files could be included with the config file and referenced as needed there like any other custom user song replacement. That way the script wouldn't need to change. Like this if you want the stock bowling music:
#===========================
# Bowling
#===========================
#
# 1. Behave Yourself (timlah79)
# 2. Dead Flowers (jyeakley loop v1)
# 3. Tammy (timlah79)
BOWLING_LOOP=bowling_loop_stock.wav
#BOWLING_EXCLUDE=
#

Great point! This would definitely be the way to go in the near term!

This mod is the cat's ass! Wow! Can't believe I didn't do this sooner. Thanks jyeakley for the instructions! Now I need to play with some beers and a notebook for any suggestions.

Enjoy Dude! TBL is a special game for sure!

I have my TBL arriving September it’s the Australian Special Edition the difference is it has Sam holding a VB a Aussie beer instead of a bud and in the main screen cut scene it has a big yellow sign beware with a kangaroo! It also comes with the original translite.
Any how, how can I get this sound mod any help would be appreciated.
Cheers

Okay here's my music config file which plays only the original songs from the movie plus a few "stock" clips for randomization (a reboot is required to load new random clips). I did remove the, "I hate the f'in Eagles" ball-drain clip which was funny for a few games but got old quickly for me. I much prefer this config over the added songs that are not from the movie but that's the purist in me. Try it and see what you think or let me know if I missed anything. Massive thanks to jyeakly, timlah79, KSP1138 and anyone else who provided assistance! You have fixed the only ding on an otherwise perfect pin!
Well, it seems that I cannot upload the config file here but if anyone wants a copy, then PM me with your email. Maybe someone can add it to a dropbox and provide a link.

PM me the config and I will add it to Dropbox! Thanks for putting that together!

I can take a look at the config tomorrow. I just uploaded what I was given directly. I can look and provide an updated link.

Wow awesone work!!!! … but i have a question : why are not all songs available in jukebox mode ?

For the main music there are 3 main slots. On power up, the script randomly chooses which tracks to plug into those 3. The jukebox mode then allows you to listen to whatever was slotted on that power cycle. There is not currently a way for the DP code to even know anything exists outside of the 3 slots. You will also notice that the track titles aren’t right either…

Not much we can do there since it is in the DP code!

I've really been enjoying this mod since I installed it. While the original music is no slouch, this really brings it to the next level, so a big THANK YOU to Jyeakley and everyone else who made this possible.
One thing that bothered me (just a little) was that when you replace the hard drive, you no longer had the neat little "in joke" of the Jackie Treehorn label for the new hard drive. Well, I had some spare time this past weekend and decided to remedy that.
I took the original hard drive and scanned the label. I thought that I might be able to just get away with a copy of the image, but I was disappointed with the result, so I decided the best course would be to do a little Photoshop magic. I was able to use the palm tree/sun image with a little bit of clean up, but all of the letter graphics are new recreations of the original, with the added text indicating the different music. I was going to print a single one, but why do one when you can do six? I printed on a sheet of glossy label paper, and here are the results:
[quoted image]
Side-by-side comparison:
[quoted image]
and finally installed:
[quoted image]
I'm pretty happy with the result.
Yes, I know this is not even seen, but to paraphrase The Stranger, I take great comfort in knowing that it's there.

Looks great! Nice job!

New information has come to light, man. We’ve had our TBL less than a week and intended to use the stock music (which is well done in our opinion) for a while, at least until we knew it by heart and could therefore better appreciate the difference this curated mod makes… but come on, who could wait really?! When there’s a new thing to try, one must try it.
Thanks to Justin and the rest of the collaborators on this, I know it was work. Thanks for making it easy and accessible. Thanks for making it cheap. Thanks for making it fun.
I’m letting the random music happen so I can get a feel for how much I like various songs and callouts at various points. I’ll take notes and then I’ll try to cut out what I don’t love using the config file and usb trick (do you just plug in the usb on the mpu board I guess?).
So far, only Paint it Black bothers me, but I’m gonna give it more time. It’s great for playing pinball but takes me out of the theme I think.
This is a fantastic group effort and sounds so seamless in the game. Super fantastic job, people, and thank you again for being so gracious and helpful with the fruits of your labor. Really amazing!

I installed a cheap USB splitter that hangs out the back of my TBL. This makes it easier to plug in the USB drive without having to take the heavy backglass off all the time!

Definitely a team effort. Thanks for the kind words! timlah79 and KSP1138 have been amazing throughout!

I need some help:
For some friends I cloned SSD with OST.
One guy got a brand new TBL and my imgae does not work. So I figured out that he has the new monitor and need a new OS.
So I tried to make him a OST version with the help from a durch fruiend very very involved in TBL but I could not get the new OS image from the supportdocuments. The download stopped on around 80%.
Can someone provide me an image "new OS" with OST please. Just plain OST, not the great soundmod you guys are working on here !

Was just messing around with some AI voice cloning. This is the free version, there are paid versions that are supposed to be even more accurate. Very interesting...

Also, for the record, I think the callouts are pretty awesome as they are. I had someone mention it to me (changing some callouts) which sent me down this rabbit hole

Quoted from Flash71:Was there any headway made in doing a version with all movie specific songs? I know it was talked about. Sorry in advance if I missed info on this.

Check out post #185 above, I have a link to a music config that another did here to only have the original tracks I believe.

#244 5 months ago
Quoted from TomDK:

I am still in need for an image new OS (larger monitor, newer TBL) with OST music !
So far all tries failed.

When you say "all tries failed" - can you elaborate on what you mean? I think I asked this in a PM, but can you post a pic of what you are seeing on the monitor?

The new OS (Arch Linux) should not really be the issue. DP added a Vertical Display option in v1.12 that I believe would fix you issue, but I would like to confirm. Thanks!

#246 5 months ago
Quoted from TomDK:

Yes and thank you again, you contacted me via PM but we could not solve the problem.
As I explained, the pin with the new OS is not in my area ! I have a TBL with old OS and screen.
I send them a SSD with OST. But the the displays shows everything too large. About a 110% zoom, it is not possible to play nor go thru the menus.
It has nothing to do with vertical display ... it is simply too large.
I made them a "update file" with OST sounds. The pin stopped while extracting this "update". It was a 1.12 update I copied the OST in. We renamed it to 1.13 with no success.
I tried to download the new OS image from the DP support site but the download stopped several times at 80% for any reason.
I have no option to modify the new OS SSD itself on my Windows computer, all the "Linux File System for win programms" due not work or are restricted to "read only". I also can not check anything because I have a older TBL.
The owner of the pin is not able to make a iso, change files in Linux partitions, etc.
What I need is a ISO file with new OS, with OST to write on a new SSD and send him.

Yeah, but the zoom doesn’t have anything to do with the OS, which was my point. I bet the owner of the other pin hit a zoom setting on the monitor itself. I am not near my pin at the moment, but I recall that there are buttons on the top that might allow this.

Old OS vs New might not be the solution here. My fear is that you will go through a bunch of work to do this with no change….

I have been playing it now for a month and love it! Does the music cycle through a different playlist after every power up? It would be cool if it cycled every game. I don’t know if that is a setting or baked into the cake but sometimes I just wanna kick Kenny Roger’s in the teeth lol. Game is brutalizing me enough without his soft lyrics. Cheers

Every power cycle. Can’t do it on every game due to the way the tracks are loaded into memory on power up.

Use the music config and exclude Kenny from the rotation if it drive you nuts!!

Quoted from Only_Pinball:

How is this accomplished?
Thanks.

Here is an example of the music config:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/i4rrxktyv350lfp/master_music.config?dl=0

If you place the music config (customize to your likings) on a FAT32 (this is key) formatted USB drive and restart TBL, it will pick up the changes!

Anyone here in France or close by that can ship a pinsider a drive? PM please!

#274 53 days ago

120GB should work fine and is typically what I use when they aren’t sold out.

Most likely an issue with the imaging. Did you use Balena Etcher and ensure that the verify ran successfully as well?

This could be a stupid question….but still….I will ask it…
I burned the img to a SSD drive, no problem, but is it correct I can not see the content (on a mac, or on a windows PC)….?

Correct. The OS is Arch Linux, so you cannot see anything when you connect the drive to a Mac or PC.

Hey All - If you have any other additions/suggestions for the Sound Mod, please shoot me a PM. I am thinking about adding some more songs to the rotation, but would like to do it all in a single release vs staggered over a couple! Version 9 has been solid, so I anticipate other than adding a few more songs in v10, that will be final! Thanks!
