Not sure about that claim since Mustang cars have been available here in Australia for over 50 years.
48 in total Mustang hardtop coupes were imported into Australia in 1965 as original left hand drive vehicles by Ford Australia and converted to RHD at their factory in Sydney before being sent out to local dealerships for sale in order to test the market. This was followed up in '66 with another 161 imported and the rest as they say is history.
