I just heard on the radio that KISS has sold everything off. Music catalog, IP, band name.

This is interesting. At least digitized AI avatars can't be any less musically talented.

I love Kiss, surprising that many think they’re musically talentless
If you like good hard rock and roll, they are superb, catchy and fun
They covered rock music on so many levels, metal, hard, soft, pop, disco, progressive and grunge
Maybe they’re egos have put people offside, but credit where credit is due, they are and always will be one of the greatest rock bands ever!

Yeah but did they ever own a Big Guns with ‘property of Kiss’ sticker on it??

I am grateful Kiss was around in the 70's because they really help Rush out quite a bit. Otherwise...meh.

No update on the 9k scam?
    That thread misses you...

    #9 5 months ago

They can now live like they're on vacation

    #10 5 months ago

No surprise. Guys are in their 70s and this is a big cash-out.

Since David Bowie invented this concept in the late 90s, a deluge of aging artists have done it. Even Springsteen sold all of his publishing a few years back for a massive check.

KISS might be the first band to sell everything lock stock and barrel but it's just an extension of the idea.

    Sell catalogue...but with strings attached.

Enter the digitized Kiss avatar band.

Doesn’t surprise me. Gene and Paul are excellent musicians (as well as the rest of the band members) but they are equally great business men. Will miss seeing them live.

Always loved them for what they were. Seen them 26 times and enjoyed every one.

My go to is always the acoustic shows which had better sets and showcased their ability. Got to Choose acoustically is second to none.

    Kiss is not a band.
    It’s a fake theatrical act.

They don’t even play their own instruments and they lip sync. Comon lol

    What I read was
“The lip syncing fake theatrical act has sold everything off, all the props and instruments they don’t play anyway”

    LMAO

Kiss was a band and a phenomenal one at that. The did it loud, live and energetic for 40 years and set the standard for what a live rock concert should be. The fact that started having some vocals on track as Paul was nearing 70 is no big deal. As for their instruments they were all played live, with a few exceptions towards the very end of their career. ps; the phrase is "lip syncing" (not lip singing) You're welcome.

Now that he won't be able to sell kiss stuff to anyone willing to listen, you think Gene will finally pay attention to shannon?

    #17 5 months ago

Imagine being a grown man thinking lip-sync is "lip sing."

Yep, sell it while they can still get good money for it and be able to enjoy spending it. I wonder where you might start seeing their music pop up now, I could see Rock And Roll All Nite appearing in a commercial for Viagra or Cialis.

Absolutely! I’ll put their debut album up against just about anything. It’s only two flaws are awful production (not their fault) and the one embarrassing cover song “Kissin’ Time”. Every other song is stellar.

    This is news?

I thought they've been selling everything they could to make a buck since the 70s.

They sold their own blood to make the comic books in the 70’s.

Can't argue with that, but I love Hotter Than Hell even more. Such a great album, probably my favorite of the classic ones. Only thing that hurts it is it sounds like it was recorded in a submarine.

Saw KISS on the Creatures of the Night/10th Anniversary tour in 1983. I was massively disappointed that Ace was not with them, but Vinnie Vincent had an amazing guitar solo in the middle of the concert. To paraphrase what Paul said during the concert, ‘I know a lot of people are saying that KISS aren’t cool anymore…that their image is dumb…and their music is outdated. Well here’s what I want you to do…you go up to those people and tell them this……FUCK OFF!’

I said that in Paul lisp screech voice and it was awesome.

Of course their image WAS dumb and outdated by 1983, and they took the makeup and costumes off months after the show you saw!

I think it’s wild that one of the former members of ABBA is now the owner of KISS. Well, at least the production company they co-founded.

KISS will become a live show like the ABBA voyage production

Kiss is a study in marketing 101….they took things to a whole new level from the very beginning. Success/money didn’t come at first….the genius was all in the marketing….they created one of the best live stage shows for their time…the costumes, hiding their faces, a rabid fan base that bought anything and everything with a Kiss logo slapped on it. There was truly a short time you could say they were the hottest band in the world….

Now let’s agree they were/are not the “best” musicians but decent enough to pull it off. They have some decent songs and some huge hits so it’s not all bad.

From pizza boxes to bowling balls, to caskets. No other band has been marketed on more products. Kiss has been an influence to countless bands/musicians. Dimebag Darrell had an Ace tattoo and was buried in a Kiss casket.

Like em or hate em there is no denying they were gonna do anything to be successful/rich/famous. And they worked for it…writing, recording, touring constantly. But with success comes rewards….Gene is probably not the best looking guy but when you have fame/money it definitely helps….there is a LONG list of famous women Gene has dated and let’s don’t get started on how many groupies he has been with…they may not have as many big hits as The Beatles, The Stones, etc. but on some levels Kiss is/was bigger than any of them.

A lot of that stuff is kind of bullshit, and tons of KISS "genius marketing" have been huge flops. Even the Stern pinball didn't sell well, which is why prices are so high on them now. Gene's magazine went tits up quick, their "giant coffee table book" was a huge failure, as were their Koffee Houses. I doubt anybody actually BOUGHT a KISS Kasket; they pretty much just surface when a rock star dies and Gene offers one up. Yeah they are GREAT at getting free press and losing a lot of other peoples' money but beyond the late 1970s their "marketing genius" prowess is a lot of smoke and mirrors and hot air.

Kiss were KISS. They did just fine for themselves and had a nice long career and Gene and Paul have archived some generational wealth. But their "impact" and "legacy" is a lot of bluster, just like every thing KISS. I think PopHouse is gonna regret this $300 million buy; in 5-10 years will anybody even give a shit? If they are mounting an ABBA-style "avatar" show, I think they are in for a big disappointment. The KISS Army is getting old and I don't see yet another generation getting on board in any kind of fashion that's gonna make that $300 million worth it.

Early Kiss was awesome…later eras were good too but different and once the makeup came off they were just another band.

My 13Yo daughter likes GnR and one of her friends favourite band is KISS, so there might be hope for the future. But, I can’t see an army showing up

Sure not everything was a success but plenty of things they marketed were successful. The original run of Kiss caskets sold out…there is a company I believe in Georgia that actually makes them so you can still get one.

The Kiss pin could have been better…poor/slow code didn’t help but the shots are actually great and now with current code it’s a really great/fun game. It should have been done on Spike 2 with full on video of Kiss…a huge missed opportunity IMO.

I've just never seen any evidence that anybody actually bought one but I'm sure they are out there!

I believed that the band acquired (or were given?) a handful of the LE's and turned them into SLE's of sort with their signatures. The price was above and beyond a basic LE and were laughed at at the time. I can't imagine what they go for now given the pricing of any Stern KISS pin.

Yeah KISS had some on their official website and they were inflated in price; the only difference was a signed instruction card (Paul, Gene, and the two scabs).

I don't think they sold many. People were doing the "check how many are left by putting games into my cart" thing and the numbers weren't moving.

Just like anything collectible there are collectors on another level with plenty of disposable money….there are some out there. I am sure it was a very limited item….there are some pretty eccentric collectors always gotta have something someone else doesn’t.

I'm no KISS expert but I know enough being in my 50's... It sounds like Gene because of his mother's influence never drank or smoked, been with over 2,000 women, and sold his catalog for $330 million later in life

    What a dumb ass!

Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong
