Hello, it is time to part with my TAF and I wanted to ask a little about the machine's value and some of the ways I could handle shipping.

SHIPPING:
I have always bought/sold machines locally in the past so I have never dealt with a shipping company. If you could recommend a shipping company based on experience that would be great. I suspect once I list this, the chances of getting interest locally (especially when I live in RI, the smallest state) are pretty slim.

SCAMS:
I have common sense and I am suspicious by default but since I don't have experience dealing with someone remotely I may need some tips. I wouldn't accept a larger check for "me" to pay the "moving company", I'm aware of that one. Any tips would be appreciated.

VALUE
What is the typical value these days for a working TAF w/topper?
What are the major things that affect value other than the obvious (having a topper, playfield condition especially around the mansion, scratches, fading, etc) for example is TAF worth more with all original parts? I bought a new DMD, not all original boards - how does that impact value?

What about MODS? I have several mods added to mine. I use the gold rom, have some playfield mods, LEDs in some areas, nothing too crazy.. Do the mods increase value or decrease value or is it really more about the eye of the beholder?

Of course I'm talking just ball park stuff here and general ideas but I'd love to hear your thoughts. I want to make sure I price this right and after hearing your advice I will post some pics and perhaps we can nail down a good asking price for mine.

Thanks all in advance

Pictures ???

#3 6 days ago

definitely will need pictures, the biggest value driver is going to be the condition of the playfield followed by the condition of the cabinet. I think most people would agree that board originality shouldn't make a difference as long as they are working and not badly hacked. What do you mean anyway by non original like taken from other games or you bought remakes. Mods probably dont change the value as much there really, may add a couple hundred to the sale price

Quoted from Laithan:

I've driven to RI a few times to pick up games. If you don't have interest in town, you will have people driving in from out of town if the price and condition are right.

Quoted from Laithan:

The baseline is around $4500-$5k for one in average condition with some playfield wear. The price can go up the nicer it is. Is it clean and has it been shopped recently? If it's not cleaned, and if you dont have experience with restoration, it's probably better to leave it alone and let the buyer restore it using their preferred methods, rather than taking incompatible cleaning products to it and accidently causing damage (such as windex, which contains ammonia, or water-based products which can swell the wood).

Quoted from Laithan:

Try a local sale first before you even think about shipping. TAF isn't a very hard game to sell. Have the buyer inspect it in person and ask them to put down "cash on the glass" before it moves anywhere.

Quoted from Laithan:

the gold rom

No added value for that.

Quoted from Laithan:

Do the mods increase value or decrease value

No decrease as long as the mods are easily reversable and don't leave extra holes or anything.

As far as increases go, a color DMD will hold its value, but not much else.

Wow thanks for the quick replies so far you guys are awesomesauce. I took some quick pictures (without even taking the glass off) but I can see that I need to shop her again as she's getting dusty now. I've made sure that I have all the right stuff and have done it a dozen times but thank you for the warnings. I will be cleaning her up before sale for sure. Of course I have a switch to look into now also (Murphy's Law lol) but no big deal.

Anyway you can get a basic idea/ball park of the condition from the pics. Not a perfect specimen but I've always thought a pretty nice example. Mansion area does have some cracks but it hasn't affected gameplay at all. There are some small touches, I changed the color of the buttons and the plunger to match the skeleton in the window of the backglass house.

The worst part about it is the front coin door and a hole in the front that was used for a lockbar when it was in service.

Removed old pictures, see below for updated ones

Rough idea from your pics is players condition game. No mag burn that I see and mansion wear is minimal if any (glass off pics are helpful for a title like this) .. I wouldn’t expect mods you have to add much value.. the bear - meh, lighted topper is $50 but not worth much to new buyer, leds are cheap.
I could be wrong but to me that looks like an import coin door- condition of cab seems to match that. I sold mine in similar condition, shopped out recently, a couple years ago for 4800. Prices seem to have gone up since then a bit. I’d gander in the $5 to $6 range

Assuming everything is working 100% and no board problems

#8 5 days ago

I have paid $4800 for player TAFs that didn't even work. It does depend on what area of the country you are in. A really nice TAF (not HUO or HEP) can bring $7500 easily here in Colorado. I have bought and sold 12 in the past 5 years (including two Golds). PF and cabinet wear are the biggest factors that determine value IMHO. Mods that hold value are Color DMD, Sound up grades (Pinball Prosound), Invisiglass. Average players that have some pf wear, decent cabinet (some scratches and wear marks) with everything working properly and clean can fetch $5500- $5800 in this area. Above average $6000-$6500

Wow this is exactly what I was looking for, thank you so much folks!

I realize now that you guys really need DETAILS and CLOSE UP pics to tell the difference between bronze, silver and gold medals..I took the time to clean her up this afternoon, replaced the rubbers and can give you a better idea of the true condition now with the glass off. The playfield colors are bright and vivid. I think she's a good example.

All pics below were taken today

If I may ask your opinion once again given the additional detail and the cleaning I've done to show the full potential, what are your thoughts now? I agree this is a players condition game. What really matters is your opinion as I trust this forum as an honest and accurate community.

I agree the MODs won't give me too much but since there are quite a few I figured I would list them out.

MOD LIST:
-----------
Uncle Fester in the chair
LED lighted topper
Clear ramp kit (I still have the original fogged ramp also)
Magnet savers to prevent magnet burn
Playfield mods: Bear, Bronze Train, Bronze Knight, Bronze Telephone, Bronze safe
Decals installed on the thing box
Decals installed on the bookcase floor and sides
LED kit for the swamp
LED kit under the safe
Ramp mod for the swamp to prevent ball sticks
Cliffy protectors on all drop holes
Gold ROM

Also has a brand new DMD, used maybe 3 hours total
Brand new coin bucket
I have the original pink manual
Also Addams Family keychain

So what do you think now? :) Did I change anyone's mind or still the same?
Thanks to the community in advance for helping me

As for the mods....the phone, train, safe and knight are all $2 pencil sharpeners.

#11 5 days ago

I could get between $6000-6200 around here as long as everything works.

#12 5 days ago

Hi res photos def help. Bit of typical wear under the ball drop and pretty light mansion wear / few inserts. Def could see a LOT worse as so many of these games got / still get crazy play. Playfield is pretty nice looking. I guess someone else knows the Colorado market better.. mine sat here on CL for a while almost identical looking for $5200 before I lowered it. Seems prices have gone up once again though. Quite a list of mods but unfortunately most of them don’t add a lot of value.

Thanks guys, this gives me a good baseline. I am replacing a thing opto board with a new one right now. Just one switch issue to chase down then she'll be 100%.

#14 3 days ago

Make sure "Thing Flips" works every time.

#15 3 days ago

As my luck would have it, the opto board wasn't the issue. "UP" opto works fine, "DOWN" opto doesn't register. Maybe a loose wire or something, I've definitely re-seated the connector.

Thing flips works great every time
