Since this machine is so close to being played, I hope a video of it playing will be posted. I will never get to see it in person.

I need stronger "coffee"! I read this and actually was looking for the pic, then I read:

Ding! Oh it IS there!
I get jokes!

Best to leave it on pay for play, that way you can count the cash box without having to open it up. Besides, how else can you recoup some of your costs?
With a machine like this expo should be paying you to show up with it.

does it come with coin mechs

I was showing this to a friend just now and I don't know if you realize this, but your first post was just over a year ago. It's very impressive progress for something that you've never done before. I love the thread and build. Great work. You are "clearly" insane.

Kind of the driving reason behind the whole thing. When I first got the notion, I searched and found the three that the Pacific Pinball Museum did and figured I'll never get out there to see them. And I thought if I would get a kick out of this, lots of folks might. Especially the kind that hang around at pinball shows. (I'm a big "what's inside the box" guy.) So to make my own was the best opportunity to see it myself and maybe get it out for other folks to enjoy. Never fear, i'll get out lots of video of the play field as well as the guts in action.

Quoted from labnip:

I have coin mechs to go in it, but have no idea how to secure them. I've taken them in and out of my Ballys but am scratching my head here. Honestly, I haven't put any real effort into figuring it out yet because frankly I have other stuff to do, but it almost seems like something is missing? They sit where they should but there is nothing to hold 'em there.

Thanks! Yep I do realize it. Time's fun when you're havin' flies. Ribbit! Seriously, I've been a woodworker on and off for 25 years. The biggest differences are the saw blades and glue. And the acrylic is a LOT less forgiving. This has been a huge learning process and at this point, I figure I could knock out another in about 6-9 months depending on complexity. (More for a wedge head or a 4 Million BC, less for a single player simple EM.) If I were to do any more, they would be much better built in less time. As for insane part, my wife agrees.

I think this amazing project deserves its own world tour. No less than 80 cities. And one of them HAS to be Omaha, NE.

How soon before you play test it?

Quoted from PinballManiac40:

How soon before you play test it?

If all goes well, and it rarely does, Saturday PM. I've got probably half a day of build-up left then a headache's worth of jones plugs to clean. (Note to self - invent way to clean jones plugs quickly and easily and rake in millions from the em guys.) Hopefully I won't have much troubleshooting to do to get it at least basically functional. Then I just need a few hours on Sunday to modify my lift cart. I bought the extra big wheels to make bumps non existent. Monday and Tuesday evenings will be throwing together a protective base for the car ride and testing the 6M$M. It hasn't been played since TPF. Wednesday we load and hit the road Thursday. Can't. Wait.

OK, so here's the coin door. See, it has the holes in the right place for the receptors.

Receptor slides right in as it should.

I see no way in hell to hold it in place there. Something is missing...

Yep, I'm pretty sure you're missing the plates and spring-loaded levers that should hold the mechs in place.

omg !!!
getting so close

It's almost Showtime!!
Can't wait to see this thing on fire tomorrow...I mean fired up.
I hope a video will waiting for me to view Sunday morning of it playing.

Not only a great thread, but, a great Bloke!!!!

I think you might have grabbed the wrong coin receptors. The receptors have 3 holes down the back. If the two of the holes have brass pegs screwed in, like it looks like yours does, then they latch in like on my old Gottlieb:

DSC01161.JPGDSC01161.JPG

I think the ones you need have a latching plate screwed into the top two holes, like this Williams I'm working on:

HTH's

I hate that I'm not going to make it to Houston next weekend. I spent all my travel money on a lathe. No doubt your machine will wow the masses.

There should be a plate, I'f I'm not mistaken, to hold them in place. it might attach to the coin shoot the deposits the coin in the top of the mech. I don't see the coin shoot installed yet in those pics. I'll try to look up some old pics and look at my machines to see if any are the same coin mech type. This is a Bally correct?

EDIT: I see that it is a Sonic brand. I have no idea what their mech holders look like but I'll keep trying for you.

EDIT 2: Great detail pictures on IPDB of every part except the coin door :-/

#1022 9 years ago

Ok, Here is the only Sonic coin door pic I could find. It isn't as helpful as you'd like but it might give you some clues compared to what you have.

Quoted from browne92:

A coin receptor is a coin receptor, they just set up differently. These didn't come with the game, they're spares out of my SI collection so they are set up for a Bally. Sonic built with rebranded Williams parts(mostly) so that picture is VERY helpful. Now I know what is missing and I am pretty sure I have one laying around somewhere... I just need to take off the top back brass pins and screw in the little plate. Sweet! And thanks! (I have a wonderful shop at work with lathes and such. Lucky me.)

Isn't IPDB great? There is a pic there that just helped me get this gate straightened out. A previous owner had rearranged it so the gate stayed open all the time and heaven only knows where the open/close wire went to. I'll have to make one of those.

Sooooo, the play field is in and up. The game, not so much. Typical EM that has been sitting quite awhile. I have cleaned the heck out of the plugs so I don't believe I am having connectivity issues. My biggest problems are probably whatever the last guy did to "make it work." So far I can get it to start a game by manually tripping the relay. The score motor turns continuously until I trip another relay to get it to stop. At that point the last score reel on the first player is holding the solenoid in because it doesn't appear to hit the EOS switch. Cleaned it to death and still does it. I suspect it is so worn that there is enough play in it to allow it to stroke without hitting the cut off. Will do some part swapping in the morning and go from there. Will probably get a thread going in the EM help section.

#1029 9 years ago

GOOD luck mr last minute.
I can say this... because I know exactly what he's been up against.

#1030 9 years ago

This can, indeed, be very frustrating with EM games!
Just be sure NOT to sand the contacts: use only leather (or cardbox, but leather is better) to clean inbetween contacts. But I guess you already knew that.

Good thing we set the clocks back this morning, hello extra hour! LOL

It ain't lookin' good, folks. I will not bring a non-functioning game to a show. (I HATE people that do that.) I'll keep at it but it looks like The Black Pyramid will be coming instead. It sure is pretty, but so far it's just a static display.

If you can help...

I might be presumptuous but I think I speak for most who just want to see the project, functional or not. If it is just too much trouble I can understand but getting to see this is person has kept me going for the last couple of months.

I vote for bringing it. If you have the schematics, bring them too. There are a couple of expert EM guys that should be able to help give you an idea to help get it repaired.

Did the game work before you disassembled it? Or this is the problem that it originally had?

#1036 9 years ago

I've got two evenings, basically, to get it to be at least a functional one player game. If I can get it close, I'll bring it. I just don't want to spend time during the fest working on my machine. Although expert help could really be advantageous. Going to make a video now to put up on this and the other post to show just what is going on here. Thanks again for the help and encouragement.

Yes! Bring it and maybe it will leave the show fully working! If not, I can't imagine any one in houston who wouldn't want to see it, playing or not.

Are you able to bring it on Thursday? After setup, good chance someone may be available to help figure it out.

could bring it outside to the cigar hang-out on friday,
and could convert "The Big Smoke", to be "The Big Smoking Repair"

Ha! Yer killin' me! Yes, It can be there Thursday. Show doesn't open until noon Friday, right? I would be happy to just have it rigged to play a continuous game where folks could play a ball or two and then let someone else on. That way people can watch it work, which is pretty much the purpose anyways. Video will be up in a few minutes.

Excellent video. I sent your information and video to Dan the man here in Houston.
He has been working on EM machines for over 25 years.

#1044 9 years ago

I have been to the Pacific Pinball Museum and I believe they have two clear machines. Not nearly as nice as yours will be. I might be there in a couple weeks. I would be happy to take some pics. for you?
Mark

#1045 9 years ago

They have three. Well, they built three - one EM and two SS. One of the S/S models has since been sold to a San Fran museum called The Exploratorium for permanent display there. No need for pics but thanks for the thought.

#1047 9 years ago

wow what a beautiful creation! simply stunning!

yeah in that first video that one unit the small upper coil was pulled in and should not be. the spring should have pulled it back and kept it back no problem. that is the reset coil.

#1048 9 years ago

Interesting vids. I'll be checking back to see how and when the bugs get fixed. Once again, amazing work, sir.

#1049 9 years ago

sooooooooo close

#1050 9 years ago

EM games are highly sequential. When one event does not happen when it should, just look to the element that is not triggered, and find why it is so.

So, in your case:

First check the coils that don't seem to work: this relay that you manually actuate to stop the reset sequence. Check the coil by desoldering one of its wire, and check with an ohmeter.
If OK, resolder the loose wire (be sure not to have cold joints; this often happens if your are using a low power iron with leadless solder on thick wires and thick lugs as in a EM game)

Do the same check with the coil that ejects the ball from the trough to your launcher.

If both coils are ok, check the switch that fires these coils, one at a time. Clean (with leather), adjust (but only if needed). If this switch is ok, then check the coil (relay, rotoswitch, whatever...) which actuates that switch, as you did earlier. And so on.... check the previous switch, and go back, one step at a time, to the faulty switch or coil.

Just be patient, do the things in an orderly manner, and you'll get it.

Good luck.
