Game has been fine, turned it on today and it makes a very loud humming sound from inside not speakers. The switches all sound like they are trying to cycle but can't. The screen does not come on, lights do come on. Turned it right off. Power supply?

#2 7 years ago

That's a guess but you really need to get out your meter and probe around. DE power supplies have 5, 12, and -12 test points.

^^^^ What Chris said.

Could you post a picture of the power supply?

Woking on it now....will send soon.

Ok all voltage is good. Had some discoloration around cpu pins and some activators that needed to be replaced and cleaned. All that remains is laser kick is in continuous fire mode (stuck in active mode). Can't figure it out.

Quoted from Killerbooger:

laser kick is in continuous fire mode (stuck in active mode).

Don't let it stay locked on for more than a few seconds. It will melt.
Remove the connector, lower left on the MPU, that the wire from the laser kick goes to. The coil should release.
Assuming that it does, the problem is then on the MPU board.
Next step is to test the transistor that drives the laser kick back.

Check the manual for the Q number.

Test procedure:
Place the black lead of your DMM on the metal tab of the transistor
Probe each of the flanking legs with the red lead
.4 to .6 volts is a normal reading. Readings outside of this range indicate a failed transistor
Probe the center leg with the red lead
A "short" should be seen. If not, then the transistor has failed.

Disconnected the connector lower left mPU. It did release. I tested all of the transistors "Q" block and they are all good. So issue has to be on the MPU since other board with transistors tested good? Also should mention that the blanking light is intermittent. Sometimes it comes on and games boots fine other times it does not. If I use the reset jumper it will boot up.

OK. Good job testing.
Next test.

Game off.
Remove the two connectors lower left.
Set DMM to continuity.
Black under the ground braid in the head.
Red touching each of the tabs of the TIP-122 transistors just above the connectors you removed.
Got any tone?

Im guessing the ground braid in the head you mean the ground wire loop at the bottom? If so I place black lead there and touch the tabs above the two removed connectors and get no tone. I do have the laser kick disconnected at the coil, if that impacts this test I can reconnect.

That wouldn't impact the test.
What I asked you to do was redundant with the test you performed earlier...I just wanted to make sure.

Do you have a logic probe and are you familiar with how to use one?

Just fyi currently 5v is lit and PIA when I connect to power. I have to coil disconnected so no worries there.

#13 7 years ago

Oh. Wait a minute.
The Laser Kickback finds ground via Q13, which is one of the "special solenoids", upper right hand side of the board. It's the bottom TIP-122.
Perform the same tests on that transistor.
Sorry...I didn't want to download 77Mb of schematics to my PC.

Stuck switch?

#17 7 years ago

Finally got the switch issue solved. Bad PIA. However, now it boots very slowly 10 min to come up. Power supply seems weak, going to replace power board unless someone has other suggestion.

What is the 5v and 12v measuring now?

Power supply is in the process of being rebuilt. Rotten Dog PS installed in the meantime. Everything is working but the laser kick is still stuck out (constant power) when connected. Going to go back and check the gates. Think maybe one of the replacements defective. Not sure what else it could be. Everything else works ok.
